Proscribing Peace - How Listing Armed Groups as Terrorists Hurts Negotiations (Paperback): Sophie Haspeslagh Proscribing Peace - How Listing Armed Groups as Terrorists Hurts Negotiations (Paperback)
Sophie Haspeslagh
R634 Discovery Miles 6 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Proscribing peace offers a systematic examination of the impact of proscription on peace negotiations. By introducing the concept of 'linguistic ceasefire', Haspeslagh adds to our understanding of the timing and sequencing of peace processes in the context of proscription. With relevance for more than half of the conflicts around the world in which an armed group is listed as a terrorist organisation, 'linguistic ceasefire' helps to explain why certain conflicts remain stuck in the 'terrorist' framing, while others emerge from it. International proscription regimes criminalise both the actor and the act of terrorism. Proscribing peace calls for an end to the amalgamation between acts and actors. By focussing on the acts instead, Haspeslagh argues, international policy would be better able to consider the violent actions both of armed groups and those of the state. By separating the act and the actor, change - and thus peace - become possible. -- .

Multidimensional Peacebuilding - Local Actors in the Philippine Context (Hardcover): Wendy Kroeker Multidimensional Peacebuilding - Local Actors in the Philippine Context (Hardcover)
Wendy Kroeker
R2,662 Discovery Miles 26 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Attentive to intersecting issues of colonialism, political marginalization, and ethnic diversity, this book examines the crucial role that local actors play in working towards sustainable peace in Mindanao, Philippines. Interviewees include both those involved in the formal peace process between the Bangsamoro people and the government of the Philippines, as well as those who have worked more broadly in building a local culture of peace through activities such as education, dialogues, awareness-building, or social reconciliation. This book provides provocative insights for multidimensional peacebuilding strategies in conflict-impacted communities, regions, and nations.

America and the Production of Islamic Truth in Uganda (Hardcover): Yahya Sseremba America and the Production of Islamic Truth in Uganda (Hardcover)
Yahya Sseremba
R3,916 Discovery Miles 39 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the ways in which the war on terror has transformed the postcolonial state in Africa. Taking American intervention in Islamic education in Uganda as the entry point, the book demonstrates how state control over Islamic truth production and everyday Muslim life has increased. During the colonial period, the Muslims in Uganda were governed in two ways: partly as lesser citizens within the Christian-dominated civil sphere and partly as members of a distinct Muslim domain. In this domain, a local system of Islamic education developed with a degree of autonomy that reflected the limits of the colonial state in shaping the Muslim subject. In the subsequent postcolonial period, systems of patronage and clientalistic networks dominated, and Muslim leaders were co-opted by the state, but without much real interference in the day-to-day lives of ordinary Muslims. However, as part of the war on terror, the US State Department seeks to bring the mechanisms of Islamic truth production, especially the madrasa, under direct state control and civil society scrutiny. This book argues that the "Muslim domain as a separate entity is coming to an end as it is being absorbed into the civil sphere, unifying the state’s domination of society." The book also analyzes local Ugandan Muslim initiatives to modernise and contextualize their own education and religion and how these initiatives are shaped by and transcend the dominant power. A thorough exploration of US foreign policy and Islamic education, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of Political Studies, African Studies and Religious Studies.

Rethinking Religion and World Affairs (Hardcover): Timothy Samuel Shah, Alfred Stepan, Monica Duffy Toft Rethinking Religion and World Affairs (Hardcover)
Timothy Samuel Shah, Alfred Stepan, Monica Duffy Toft
R3,442 Discovery Miles 34 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years, the role of religion in the study and conduct of international affairs has become increasingly important. Rethinking Religion and World Affairs seeks to question and remedy the problematic neglect of religion in extant scholarship. Drawing on the work of leading scholars as well as policy makers and analysts, this volume will form the first comprehensive and authoritative guide to the interconnections of religion and global politics. These essays grapple with puzzles, issues and questions concerning religion and world affairs in six major areas. Contributors critically revisit the "secularization thesis, " which proclaimed the steady erosion of religion's public presence as an effect of modernization; explore the relationship between religion, democracy, and the juridico-political discourse of human rights; assess the role of religion in fomenting, ameliorating, and redressing violent conflict; and consider the value of religious beliefs, actors, and institutions to the delivery of humanitarian aid and the fostering of socio-economic development. Later chapters address the representation of religion in the expanding global media landscape, the unique place of religion in American foreign policy, and the dilemmas it presents. Rethinking Religion and World Affairs will become an invaluable resource for professional and emerging scholars, journalists, policy makers, diplomats, and others concerned in their personal or professional capacities with religion and international affairs.

Military Mission Formations and Hybrid Wars - New Sociological Perspectives (Hardcover): Thomas Vladimir Brond, Uzi Ben-Shalom,... Military Mission Formations and Hybrid Wars - New Sociological Perspectives (Hardcover)
Thomas Vladimir Brond, Uzi Ben-Shalom, Eyal Ben-Ari
R4,124 Discovery Miles 41 240 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This volume explores and develops new social-scientific tools for the analysis and understanding of contemporary military missions in theatre. Despite the advent of new types of armed conflict, the social-scientific study of militaries in action continues to focus on tools developed in the hey-day of conventional wars. These tools focus on such classic issues as cohesion and leadership, communication and unit dynamics, or discipline and motivation. While these issues continue to be important, most studies focus on organic units (up to and including brigades). By contrast, this volume suggests the utility of concepts related to mission formations - as opposed to 'units' or 'components' - to better capture the (ongoing) processual nature of the amalgamations and combinations that military involvement in conflicts necessitates. The study of these formations by the social sciences - sociology, social psychology, anthropology, political science and organization science - requires the introduction of new analytical tools to the study of militaries in theatre. As such, this volume utilizes new approaches to social life, organizational dynamics and to armed violence to understand the place of the armed forces in contemporary conflicts and the new tasks they are assigned. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, sociology, security studies and International Relations in general.

The Crescent and the Cross - Muslim and Christian Approaches to War and Peace (Hardcover): Oliver Ramsbotham, Saba Risaluddin,... The Crescent and the Cross - Muslim and Christian Approaches to War and Peace (Hardcover)
Oliver Ramsbotham, Saba Risaluddin, Brian Wicker, Abdel Haleem Harifyah
R2,650 Discovery Miles 26 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This text is the product of dialogue between a group of leading British Muslim and Christian scholars concerned about the alleged danger to the West of Islamic fundamentalism. It analyzes the ethical and legal principles, rooted in both traditions, underlying any use of armed force in the modern world. After chapters on the history, theology and laws of war as seen from both sides, the book applies its conclusions to firstly, the 1990-91 Gulf War and secondly, the Bosnian conflict. It concludes that Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" thesis is a myth.

Nuclear Weapons and Deterrence Stability in South Asia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Devin T Hagerty Nuclear Weapons and Deterrence Stability in South Asia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Devin T Hagerty
R1,726 Discovery Miles 17 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the theory and practice of nuclear deterrence between India and Pakistan, two highly antagonistic South Asian neighbors who recently moved into their third decade of overt nuclear weaponization. It assesses the stability of Indo-Pakistani nuclear deterrence and argues that, while deterrence dampens the likelihood of escalation to conventional-and possibly nuclear-war, the chronically embittered relations between New Delhi and Islamabad mean that deterrence failure resulting in major warfare cannot be ruled out. Through an empirical examination of the effects of nuclear weapons during five crises between India and Pakistan since 1998, as well as a discussion of the theoretical logic of Indo-Pakistani nuclear deterrence, the book offers suggestions for enhancing deterrence stability between these two countries.

The Failure of the Middle East Peace Process? - A Comparative Analysis of Peace Implementation in Israel/Palestine, Northern... The Failure of the Middle East Peace Process? - A Comparative Analysis of Peace Implementation in Israel/Palestine, Northern Ireland and South Africa (Hardcover)
Guy Ben-Porat
R1,421 Discovery Miles 14 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This title compares the implementation aspects of peace agreements in three conflicts considered for a long time intractable: Israel/Palestine, Northern Ireland and South Africa. The implementation of peace agreements is an important yet relatively under-studied area. Israel/Palestine, Northern Ireland and South Africa are familiar cases, allowing contributors to explore processes that have had a relatively long duration and to delve deeper than would be possible in some more recent peace processes. The collection of contributors are well positioned to make a useful contribution to a growing field. It adds a comparative dimension to existing treatments of the Middle East peace process. This volume examines the gap between agreements and actual peace. It offers different explanations for the successes and failures of the three processes - in South Africa, Northern Ireland and Israel-Palestine - and provides historical and comparative perspectives on the failure of the Middle East peace process.

A Requiem for Peacebuilding? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Jorg Kustermans, Tom Sauer, Barbara Segaert A Requiem for Peacebuilding? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Jorg Kustermans, Tom Sauer, Barbara Segaert
R3,334 Discovery Miles 33 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book assesses the claim that peacebuilding is a moribund international practice. Its contributors trace the origins of peacebuilding, bring back to memory its moments of triumph, and reflect on the reports of its decline. The story of peacebuilding parallels the broader story of liberalism's rise and fall in world politics, including the attempt to remedy an ailing patient by administering a magic medicine - "the local turn". Its contributors further write about what may come after peacebuilding as we still know it. They describe more locally rooted attempts at building peace and how they operate in the shadows of, and in an ambiguous relationship with, governmental and international peacebuilders. The book finally suggests that reports of the pending death of peacebuilding are probably premature. Peacebuilding is a resilient international practice, apt to adjust itself to a changing environment, and too important a source of legitimacy for those that wield power.

The United States, Russia and Nuclear Peace (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Stephen J Cimbala The United States, Russia and Nuclear Peace (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Stephen J Cimbala
R2,696 Discovery Miles 26 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyzes the United States and Russia's nuclear arms control and deterrence relationships and how these countries must lead current and prospective efforts to support future nuclear arms control and nonproliferation. The second nuclear age, following the end of the Cold War and the demise of the Soviet Union, poses new challenges with respect to nuclear-strategic stability, deterrence and nonproliferation. The spread of nuclear weapons in Asia, and the potential for new nuclear weapons states in the Middle East, create new possible axes of conflict potentially stressful to the existing world order. Other uncertainties include the interest of major powers in developing a wider spectrum of nuclear weapons and delivery systems, possibly for use in limited nuclear wars, and the competitive technologies for antimissile defenses being developed and deployed by the United States and Russia. Other technology challenges, including the implications of cyberwar for nuclear deterrence and crisis management, are also considered. Political changes also matter. The early post-Cold War hopes for the emergence of a global pacific security community, excluding the possibility of major war, have been dashed by political conflict between Russia and NATO, by the roiled nature of American domestic politics with respect to international security, and by a more assertive and militarily competent China. Additionally, the study includes suggestions for both analysis and policy in order to prevent the renewed U.S.-Russian nuclear arms race and competition in new technologies. This volume would be ideal for graduate students, researchers, scholars and anyone who is interested in nuclear policy, international studies, and Russian politics.

The Other Israel - Voices of Refusal and Dissent (Paperback, New edition): Roane Carey The Other Israel - Voices of Refusal and Dissent (Paperback, New edition)
Roane Carey
R408 Discovery Miles 4 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The Other Israel" is an urgent and passionate intervention by Israeli citizens challenging the continued occupation of Palestinian territory and the failed policies of Ariel Sharon's government. Against a backdrop of increasing violence on both sides, the book presents a broad range of dissenting voices that articulate practical, legal, and moral objections to the occupation. Written from within the throes of the unfolding tragedy, it includes contributions from journalists, novelists, activists, military reservists, and former government officials.

Needed now more than ever, this book challenges narrow American perceptions of public opinion in Israel, and will act as a catalyst in prompting vital debate about the future of Israel and the path to peace for all citizens of the Middle East.

Contesting Peace in the Postwar City - Belfast, Mitrovica and Mostar (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Ivan Gusic Contesting Peace in the Postwar City - Belfast, Mitrovica and Mostar (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Ivan Gusic
R2,443 Discovery Miles 24 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Contesting Peace in the Postwar City is key reading for urban and peace and conflict scholars. In this impressive and meticulously researched book, Gusic reflects on the ways in which divisions are routinised in the everyday landscape of divided cities and skilfully investigates how change and continuity are governed in postwar urban spaces. The book provides rich empirical material from the cities of Mostar, Mitrovica and Belfast, drawing on nuanced fieldwork insights." -Stefanie Kappler, Durham University, UK "Ivan Gusic sets out a powerful, theoretically critical and empirically rich account of the trajectories of cities after war. The strength of the work is that it brings an understanding of the urban condition into relation with ethno-national conflict and the survival of violence. Gusic unsettles dominant narratives in peace studies by offering a grounded evaluation of three cities coming out of violence and points to the importance of place in peacebuilding processes." -Brendan Murtagh, Queen's University Belfast, UK "Detailed case studies of Belfast, Mitrovica and Mostar show how cities are often engines of what Ivan Gusic calls 'war in peace'. This on-trend study combines the latest research from critical urban studies with peace and conflict studies to produce a very accessible and internationally relevant book. It is highly recommended." -Roger Mac Ginty, Durham University, UK This book explores why the postwar city reinforces rather than transcends its continuities of war in peace. It theorises war-to-peace transitions as conflicts over how to socio-politically order society and then analyses different urban conflicts over peace(s) in postwar Belfast (Northern Ireland), Mitrovica (Kosovo) and Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina). Focusing on themes such as educational segregation, clientelism, fear, paramilitaries, and infrastructure, it shows how conflict lines from war are perpetuated in and by the postwar city. Yet it also discovers instances where antagonisms are bridged by utilising the postwar city's transcending potential. While written in the nexus between peace research and urban studies, this book also speaks to political geography, international relations, anthropology, and planning.

Lewis Fry Richardson: His Intellectual Legacy and Influence in the Social Sciences (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Nils Petter... Lewis Fry Richardson: His Intellectual Legacy and Influence in the Social Sciences (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Nils Petter Gleditsch
R694 Discovery Miles 6 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is an open access book. Lewis F Richardson (1981-1953), a physicist by training, was a pioneer in meteorology and peace research and remains a towering presence in both fields. This edited volume reviews his work and assesses its influence in the social sciences, notably his work on arms races and their consequences, mathematical models, the size distribution of wars, and geographical features of conflict. It contains brief bibliographies of his main publications and of articles and books written about Richardson and his work and discusses his continuing influence in peace research and international relations as well as his attitude to the ethical responsibilities of a scientist. It will be of interest to a wide range of scholars. This book includes 11 chapters written by Nils Petter Gleditsch, Dina A Zinnes, Ron Smith, Paul F Diehl, Kelly Kadera, Mark Crescenzi, Michael D Ward, Kristian Skrede Gleditsch, Nils B Weidmann, Jurgen Scheffran, Niall MacKay, Aaron Clauset, Michael Spagat and Stijn van Weezel. Lewis F Richardson occupied an important position in two academic fields as different as meteorology and peace research, with academic prizes awarded in both disciplines. In peace research, he pioneered the use of mathematical models and the meticulous compilation of databases for empirical research. As a quaker and pacifist, he refused to work in preparations for war, paid a heavy prize in terms of his career, and (at least in the social sciences) was fully recognized as a pioneering scholar only posthumously with the publication of two major books. Lewis Fry Richardson is one of the 20th century's greatest but least appreciated thinkers-a creative physicist, psychologist, meteorologist, applied mathematician, historian, pacifist, statistician, and witty stylist. If you've heard of weather prediction, chaos, fractals, cliometrics, peace science, big data, thick tails, or black swans, then you have benefited from Richardson's prescience in bringing unruly phenomena into the ambit of scientific understanding. Richardson's ideas continue to be relevant today, and this collection is a superb retrospective on this brilliant and lovable man. Militias, States and Violence against Civilians - Civic Vice, Civic Virtue (Hardcover): Paul Lorenzo Johnson, William Wittels Militias, States and Violence against Civilians - Civic Vice, Civic Virtue (Hardcover)
Paul Lorenzo Johnson, William Wittels
R3,919 Discovery Miles 39 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the conditions under which the presence and use of militias result in an increase or decrease in violence against civilians in intra-state conflicts. Showcasing the breadth and diversity of modern militias in the context of violence against civilians, the volume addresses the predation and repression that many such groups are infamous for, as well as increasingly important efforts by other militias at civilian protection in war-torn settings. The chapters examine militias from around the world, drawing on both qualitative and quantitative methods as they cover groups as varied as gangs, death squads. grassroots community-defense groups, official state militias, and party-sponsored armies -- groups on the "civic vice" side, the "civic virtue" side, and the wide and mixed in-between space where most cases fall. Taken as a cohesive unit, the work lays the foundation for an encompassing theory and interrogation of the causal chain between militia type and operating context and the levels of violence against civilians. It provides path-breaking theory-building and empirical scholarship. Policymakers and national-security practitioners dealing with issues relating to armed groups will also benefit from the practical issues covered here, such as how different forms of sponsorship and training affect militia behavior. This book will be of interest to students of civil wars, political violence, counterinsurgency, civil-military relations, and security studies in general.

Negotiation, Identity and Justice - Pathways to Agreement (Paperback): Daniel Druckman Negotiation, Identity and Justice - Pathways to Agreement (Paperback)
Daniel Druckman
R1,312 Discovery Miles 13 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents contributions made by Daniel Druckman on the topics of negotiation, national identity, and justice. Containing research conducted and published over a half century, the volume is divided into seven thematic parts that cover: the multifaceted career; flexibility in negotiation; values and interests; turning points; national identity; process outcomes and justice, and rounds off with a reflective and forward-looking conclusion. Each part is prefaced with an introduction that highlights the chapters to follow. The chapters comprise empirical, theoretical, and state-of-the-art articles. These essays offer an array of research approaches, which include experiments, simulations and case studies, with topics ranging from boundary roles and turning points in negotiation to nationalism and war, and the way that research is used in skills training for diplomats and in the development of government policies. In addition, the book provides rare glimpses of behind-the-scenes networks, sponsors, and events, with personal stories that also make evident that there is more to a career than what appears in print. The articles chosen for inclusion are a small set of the total number of career publications by the author but are the ones that made a substantial impact in their respective fields. The concluding section looks back at how the author's career connects to classical ideas and the value of an evidence-based approach to scholarship and practice. It also looks forward to directions for future research in six areas. This book will be of considerable interest to students of international negotiation, conflict resolution, security studies and International Relations.

Sustainable Development and Peace - A Study in Sociological Theory (Hardcover): Romina Gurashi Sustainable Development and Peace - A Study in Sociological Theory (Hardcover)
Romina Gurashi
R3,916 Discovery Miles 39 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the growing attention that sociology has started to give to environmental issues in terms of peace and social justice. With a focus on sociological theory and its development, it reconstructs the long journey made by the social sciences towards the reconstruction, in a single theoretical paradigm, of the problems associated with the implementation of conditions of peace and sustainability. Beginning from the premise that environmental issues are never purely environmental, but entail political, economic and social implications, Sustainable Development and Peace offers an understanding of where we are heading, and how, reflecting on present challenges and possible directions for the future. It will therefore appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, development studies, politics and environmental studies.

From War to Peace - Altered Strategic Landscapes in the Twentieth Century (Hardcover, New): Paul Kennedy, William I. Hitchcock From War to Peace - Altered Strategic Landscapes in the Twentieth Century (Hardcover, New)
Paul Kennedy, William I. Hitchcock
R1,859 Discovery Miles 18 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this timely collection, a dozen leading scholars of international affairs consider the twentieth century's recurring failure to construct a stable and peaceful international order in the wake of war. Why has peace been so hard to build? The authors reflect on the difficulties faced by governments as they sought a secure world order after the First World War, the Second World War, and the Cold War. Major wars unleashed new and unexpected forces, the authors show, and in post-war periods policymakers were faced not only with the reappearance of old power-political issues but also with quite unforeseen challenges. In 1918, a hundred-year-old order based on a balance of power among the states of Europe collapsed, leaving European and American leaders to deal with social, ideological, and ethnic crises. After World War II, hopeful plans for peace were checked by nuclear rivalry, international economic competition, and colonial issues. And unexpected challenges after the Cold War-global economic instability, ethnic conflict, environmental crises-joined with traditional security threats to cast a pall again over international peace efforts. In drawing out historical parallels and comparing how major states have adapted to sharp and sudden changes in the international system during the twentieth century, this book offers essential insights for those who hope to navigate toward peace across today's altered and uncertain strategic landscape. Security Expertise - Practice, Power, Responsibility (Paperback): Trine Villumsen Berling, Christian Bueger Security Expertise - Practice, Power, Responsibility (Paperback)
Trine Villumsen Berling, Christian Bueger
R1,334 Discovery Miles 13 340 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This volume brings together scholars from different fields to explore the power, consequences and everyday practices of security expertise. Expertise mediates between different forms of knowledge: scientific and technological, legal, economic and political knowledge. This book offers the first systematic study of security expertise and opens up a productive dialogue between science and technology studies and security studies to investigate the character and consequences of this expertise. In security theory, the study of expertise is crucial to understanding whose knowledge informs security making and to reflect on the impact and responsibility of security analysis. In science and technology studies, the study of security politics adds a challenging new case to the agenda of research on expertise and policy. The contributors investigate cases such as academic security studies, security think tanks, the collaboration between science, anthropology and the military, transnational terrorism, and the ethical consequences of security expertise. Together they challenge our understanding of how expertise works and what consequences it has for security politics and international relations. This book will be of particular interest to students of critical security studies, sociology, science and technology studies, and IR/security studies in general.

Operational Warfare at Sea - Theory and Practice (Paperback, 2nd edition): Milan Vego Operational Warfare at Sea - Theory and Practice (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Milan Vego
R1,468 Discovery Miles 14 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work explains and critically examines the main theoretical aspects of operational warfare at sea. It utilizes diverse examples from naval history, ranging from the ancient era to the present day, to offer a comprehensive description and analysis of the key components of operational warfare at sea today. Specifically, it explains the military/naval objectives, levels of war, types of major naval/joint operations and maritime campaigns, and their main elements. In contrast to many works, this book focuses on the role of the naval operational commanders in command and control and decision-making. It also describes in great detail the main elements of naval operational leadership and operational thinking, which are illustrated by examples of successful warfighting admirals. This new edition has been completely revised and updated, with three new chapters, and analyses in even more detail the planning and execution of major naval/joint operations and maritime campaigns. This book is intended to serve as a primer of how to plan, prepare, and execute major naval/joint operations and maritime campaigns for naval operational commanders and their staffs, but will also be of great interest to students of naval power, strategic studies, and military history in general.

Understanding ASEAN's Role in Asia-Pacific Order (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Robert Yates Understanding ASEAN's Role in Asia-Pacific Order (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Robert Yates
R2,676 Discovery Miles 26 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book assesses the important role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the management of regional political, security and economic relations. The author argues that ASEAN's prominent role in the region, spanning 50 years, is largely due to the acquiescence of the great powers who endorsed ASEAN, accepted its regional position and accorded the institution a legitimacy and durability that, otherwise, it would not have. This text offers a key intervention into the debate regarding ASEAN and regional order by showing how ASEAN's contribution to order management is part of a negotiated division of labour with the great powers. The author applies an innovative social roles analysis, which captures the dynamic interactions between ASEAN and the great powers from the Cold War to the present day.
