Christianity in India - The Anti-Colonial Turn (Paperback): Clara A. b. Joseph Christianity in India - The Anti-Colonial Turn (Paperback)
Clara A. b. Joseph
R1,545 Discovery Miles 15 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

By studying the history and sources of the Thomas Christians of India, a community of pre-colonial Christian heritage, this book revisits the assumption that Christianity is Western and colonial and that Christians in the non-West are products of colonial and post-colonial missionaries. Christians in the East have had a difficult time getting heard-let alone understood as anti-colonial. This is a problem, especially in studies on India, where the focus has typically been on North India and British colonialism and its impact in the era of globalization. This book analyzes texts and contexts to show how communities of Indian Christians predetermined Western expansionist goals and later defined the Western colonial and Indian national imaginary. Combining historical research and literary analysis, the author prompts a re-evaluation of how Indian Christians reacted to colonialism in India and its potential to influence ongoing events of religious intolerance. Through a rethinking of a postcolonial theoretical framework, this book argues that Thomas Christians attempted an anti-colonial turn in the face of ecclesiastical and civic occupation that was colonial at its core. A novel intervention, this book takes up South India and the impact of Portuguese colonialism in both the early modern and contemporary period. It will be of interest to academics in the fields of Renaissance/Early Modern Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Religious Studies, Christianity, and South Asia.

The Mysterious Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveaux - A Study of Powerful Female Leadership in Nineteenth Century New Orleans... The Mysterious Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveaux - A Study of Powerful Female Leadership in Nineteenth Century New Orleans (Hardcover, New)
Ina J. Fandrich
R4,513 Discovery Miles 45 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Numerous eyewitness accounts described New Orleans' famous Voodoo Queen Marie Laveaux as the most powerful woman there is. As a person of African descent and a woman she was barred from holding public offices according to Antebellum United States laws. Nevertheless, it appears that it was she who ruled over the city, not the municipal authorities. This study investigates the emergence of powerful female leadership in New Orleans' Voodoo tradition. It provides a careful examination of the cultural, historical, economic, demographic and socio-political factors that contributed both to the feminization of this religious culture and its strong female leaders. The quintessential example for this phenomenon of female power was Voodoo Queen Marie Laveaux, the most prominent and most influential Voodoo leader in the history of the city. She thus receives special attention in this analysis.

Religion and Technology in India - Spaces, Practices and Authorities (Paperback): Knut A. Jacobsen, Kristina Myrvold Religion and Technology in India - Spaces, Practices and Authorities (Paperback)
Knut A. Jacobsen, Kristina Myrvold
R1,437 Discovery Miles 14 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Religion tends to flourish when technological developments create new possibilities for communication and representation, and simultaneously change as a consequence of these developments. This book explores intersections between religion and technology in India, at the present and in the colonial past, and how various forms of techno-religious intersections transform and open up for new religious practices, discourses, communities, and institutions. With focus on Indian contexts and religions, it discusses various empirical and theoretical aspects of how technological innovations create, alter, and negotiate religious spaces, practices and authorities. The book provides rich and multifaceted empirical examples of different ways in which technological practices relate to meanings, ideas, and practices of religions. The techno-religious intersections generate several questions about authority and power, the politics and poetics of identity, community and place, and how religious agency, information, and experience are mediated, commodified, and adjusted to new demands of societies. The chapters explore the Hindu, Jain, and Sikh traditions in relation to new technological developments and media, such as photography, new means of visualization, TV serials, mobile phones, and online communication. The book will be of interest to academics studying modern and contemporary India and South Asia, and especially the role of religion and technology.

Minority Religions in Europe and the Middle East - Mapping and Monitoring (Paperback): George D. Chryssides Minority Religions in Europe and the Middle East - Mapping and Monitoring (Paperback)
George D. Chryssides
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Minority religions, not only New Religious Movements, are explored in this innovative book including the predicament of ancient religions such as Zoroastrianism, 'old new' religions such as Baha'i, and traditional religions that are minorities elsewhere. The book is divided into two parts: the gathering of data on religious minorities ("mapping"), and the ways in which governments and interest groups respond to them ("monitoring"). The international group examine which new religions exist in particular countries, what their uptake is, and how allegiance can be ascertained. They explore a range of issues faced by minority religions, encompassing official state recognition and registration, unequal treatment in comparison with a dominant religion, how changes in government can affect how they fare, the extent to which members are free to practise their faith, how they sometimes seek to influence politics, and how they can be affected by harassment and persecution. Bringing together debates concerning the social and political issues facing new religions in Europe and the Middle East, this collection extends its focus to Middle Eastern minority faiths, enabling exposition of spiritual movements such as the Gulen Movement, Paganism in Israel, and the Zoroastrians in Tehran.

Yoga - The Indian Tradition (Hardcover): David Carpenter, Ian Whicher Yoga - The Indian Tradition (Hardcover)
David Carpenter, Ian Whicher
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The popular perception of yoga in the West remains for the most part that of a physical fitness program, largely divorced from its historical and spiritual roots. The essays collected here provide a sense of the historical emergence of the classical system presented by Patañjali, a careful examination of the key elements, overall character and contemporary relevance of that system (as found in the Yoga Sutra) and a glimpse of some of the tradition's many important ramifications in later Indian religious history.

Popular Christianity in India - Riting between the Lines (Paperback): Selva J. Raj, Corinne G Dempsey Popular Christianity in India - Riting between the Lines (Paperback)
Selva J. Raj, Corinne G Dempsey
R768 Discovery Miles 7 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Popular Christianity in India explores Indian Christianity as crafted and expressed through lived experience, providing an important balance to currently available, typically theological, studies. Drawing from many disciplines, this volume unearths the multifaceted terrain of festivals, rituals, saints, miracle workers, missionaries, and visionaries in Christian India, providing a wonderful glimpse of its richness and complexities. The contributors reveal the ways in which local Christian traditions deftly challenge assumed divisions and power imbalances between East and West, Hindu and Christian, foreign and indigenous, and elite and local expressions. Whether forging complicated religious, caste, and national identities, employing religious hybridity to promote well-being, or asserting autonomy within oppressive social and religious structures, local Christianity provides a crucial means for its participants to manage their earthly needs and desires.

The Song of the Goddess - The Devi Gita: Spiritual Counsel of the Great Goddess (Paperback): C.Mackenzie Brown The Song of the Goddess - The Devi Gita: Spiritual Counsel of the Great Goddess (Paperback)
C.Mackenzie Brown; Introduction by C.Mackenzie Brown
R700 Discovery Miles 7 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Devi Gita, literally the "Song of the Goddess, " is an Eastern spiritual classic that appeared around the fifteenth century C.E.C. Mackenzie Brown provides a reader-friendly English translation of this sacred text taken from his well-regarded previous book The Devi Gita: The Song of the Goddess, A Translation, Annotation, and Commentary. Here the translation is presented uninterrupted without the scholarly annotations of the original version and in its entirety for the pleasure of all readers who wish to encounter this treasure from the world's sacred literature.

Often neglected, the Devi Gita deserves to be better known for its presentations of one of the great Hindu visions of the divine conceived in feminine terms. The work depicts the universe as created, pervaded, and protected by a supremely powerful, all-knowing, and wholly compassionate divine female. It also describes the various spiritual paths leading to realization of unity with the Goddess. The author of the Devi Gita intended for the work to supplant the famous teachings of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita (the "Song of the Lord") from a goddess-inspired perspective.

Belief Beyond Boundaries - Volume 5 (Paperback, New edition): Joanne Pearson Belief Beyond Boundaries - Volume 5 (Paperback, New edition)
Joanne Pearson
R1,399 Discovery Miles 13 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Belief Beyond Boundaries explores 'religions' or forms of spirituality that tend to be marginal to the mainstream of British and North American religious expression. The book examines how alternative spiritualities traditionally classed as 'New Age' or new religious movements have grown exponentially in recent years. It progresses to detailed examination of Paganism, Celtic spirituality, Wicca, witchcraft, North American indigenous religion and New Age, considering the impact of the rise of science on religion and the emergence of new categories of spirituality. The authors explore why these forms of spirituality are so popular in the contemporary UK and USA, and how they impact on mainstream traditions. The five textbooks and Reader that make up the Religion Today Open University/Ashgate series are: o From Sacred Text to Internet o Religion and Social Transformations o Perspectives on Civil Religion o Global Religious Movements in Regional Context o Belief Beyond Boundaries o Religion Today: A Reader

Williams on South Asian Religions and Immigration - Collected Works (Paperback): Raymond Brady Williams Williams on South Asian Religions and Immigration - Collected Works (Paperback)
Raymond Brady Williams
R1,396 Discovery Miles 13 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The dual foci for this collection of the author's most important writings are Swaminarayan Hinduism and South Asian immigrants in the United States. Both are topics of wide and growing interest in India and in many countries where South Indians have settled. Swaminarayan Hinduism's growth in the past few decades in India and among Indians abroad has been remarkable: one subsect now has 8100 centers around the world where weekly meetings are held. The second focus is on the religions of South Asian immigrants: Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs and Christians. The first section is introductory and sets the stage through an analysis of the transmission of religious traditions. The second section moves from the development of Swaminarayan Hinduism and its leadership in India to its development in the United States as exemplified in Chicago. The third section analyzes the impact South Asian religions are having in the United States, and the effects that migration and modernization are having on the religions of the immigrants.

The Routledge International Handbook of Globalization Studies - Second edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): Bryan Turner, Robert... The Routledge International Handbook of Globalization Studies - Second edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Bryan Turner, Robert Holton
R1,609 Discovery Miles 16 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second edition of the Routledge International Handbook of Globalization Studies offers students clear and informed chapters on the history of globalization and key theories that have considered the causes and consequences of the globalization process. There are substantive sections looking at demographic, economic, technological, social and cultural changes in globalization. The handbook examines many negative aspects - new wars, slavery, illegal migration, pollution and inequality - but concludes with an examination of responses to these problems through human rights organizations, international labour law and the growth of cosmopolitanism. There is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches with essays covering sociology, demography, economics, politics, anthropology and history. The second edition has been completely revised and features important new thinking on themes such as Islamophobia and the globalization of religious conflict, shifts in global energy production such as fracking, global inequalities, fiscal transformations of the state and problems of taxation, globalization and higher education, and an analysis of the general sense of catastrophe that surrounds contemporary understandings of the consequences of a global world.

Reconciliation and Religio-political Non-conformism in Zimbabwe (Paperback): Joram Tarusarira Reconciliation and Religio-political Non-conformism in Zimbabwe (Paperback)
Joram Tarusarira
R1,413 Discovery Miles 14 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Religio-political organisations in Zimbabwe play an important role in advocating democratisation and reconciliation, against acquiescent, silenced or co-opted mainstream churches. Reconciliation and Religio-political Non-conformism in Zimbabwe analyses activities of religious organisations that deviate from the position of mainline churches and the political elites with regard to religious participation in political matters, against a background of political conflict and violence. Drawing on detailed case studies of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance (ZCA), Churches in Manicaland (CiM) and Grace to Heal (GtH), this book provocatively argues that in the face of an unsatisfactory religious and political culture, religio-political non-conformists emerge seeking to introduce a new ethos even in the face of negative sanctions from dominant religious and political systems.

Authority and Meaning in Indian Religions - Hinduism and the Case of Valmiki (Paperback): Julia Leslie Authority and Meaning in Indian Religions - Hinduism and the Case of Valmiki (Paperback)
Julia Leslie
R1,101 Discovery Miles 11 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2003. Can a text be used either to validate or to invalidate contemporary understandings? Texts may be deemed 'sacred', but sacred to whom? Do conflicting understandings matter? Is it appropriate to try to offer a resolution? For Hindus and non-Hindus, in India and beyond, Valmiki is the poet-saint who composed the epic RA mA yaAa. Yet for a vocal community of dalits (once called 'untouchables'), within and outside India, Valmiki is God. How then does one explain the popular story that he started out as an ignorant and violent bandit, attacking and killing travellers for material gain? And what happens when these two accounts, Valmiki as God and Valmiki as villain, are held simultaneously by two different religious groups, both contemporary, and both vocal? This situation came to a head with controversial demonstrations by the Valmiki community in Britain in 2000, giving rise to some searching questions which Julia Leslie now seeks to address. Exploring the relationship between sacred text and religious meaning, Leslie presents a critical, text-historical study of the figure of Valmiki drawing on the sacred texts traditionally attributed to him: the VA lmAGBPki RA mA yaAa and the YogavA siA(1)A+/-ha RA mA yaAa, both in Sanskrit. While identifying and examining the various strands of popular stories concerning Valmiki, Leslie disentangles the earliest evidence for him from the narrative threads of passing centuries, and considers the implications of that process. This ground-breaking analysis, illustrated with paintings of Valmiki, makes a unique contribution both to our understanding of the interlocking beliefs of many religious communities and to a greater awareness of the problematic relationship between sacred text and contemporary religious meaning. Invaluable to students of both the study of religions and South Asian studies, this book will also be of interest to Indian communities in the diaspora seeking to understand their roots, including (but not exclusively) the Valmikis.

Maya Identities and the Violence of Place - Borders Bleed (Paperback): Charles D Thompson, Jr. Maya Identities and the Violence of Place - Borders Bleed (Paperback)
Charles D Thompson, Jr.
R1,130 Discovery Miles 11 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2001. Exploring issues of diversity and cross-cultural interaction and understanding, Maya Identities and the Violence of Place offers new perspectives on borderlands and identities, providing an important case study of people from Latin America on the move. Examining issues of indigeneity, diaspora, flights from physical violence and economic repression, and efforts to remain indigenous among a proud but beleaguered people, this book is replete with stories of movement and change that operate as means to maintain identity. Thompson examines how the Jacalteco Maya of Latin America form their identities as indigenous people, despite a long tradition of movement across the rigid constraints of borders of geography, history, race and ethnicity. Religion, language, fiestas, and stories of leaving and return, all serve to bond people to their particularity. Examining the indigenous identity formations and religious convictions among the Maya in places where brutality has dominated the landscape and where violence is commonplace, this book avoids dwelling on centers of culture and explains instead how Maya concepts of identity arise from travel, contact with others, and change. Thompson reveals the ironies of classifying as natives', aboriginal or indigenous the many individuals and families who have become refugees, and explores how Maya have transcended the erroneous image of Guatemalan Indians ensconced within borders of particular land, and how they have overstepped popular portrayals of native peoples clinging tenaciously to their sacred soil as their sole means of surviving culturally and spiritually. Showing bleeding borders to be more than a recent occurrence, Thompson argues that there has never been a time when Maya did not have to travel in order to remain who they are. Exploring ideas of human to land connections and how religion among the indigenous makes change and movement possible, this book offers invaluable insight

The Challenge of Religion after Modernity - Beyond Disenchantment (Paperback): Raymond L.M. Lee, Susan E. Ackerman The Challenge of Religion after Modernity - Beyond Disenchantment (Paperback)
Raymond L.M. Lee, Susan E. Ackerman
R1,130 Discovery Miles 11 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2003:If God has departed, as Baudrillard claims, is religion still relevant? A new religious landscape is appearing in the new millennium. The middle classes with their electronic technologies are producing a culture of commodified images and signs that is radically transforming the religious landscape and re-enchanting the world. Ecstatic experiences pervade the reenchanted world. Both fundamentalism and the New Age movement promote the free flow of charisma, reshaping religion in unforeseen directions. Analysing the crisis of modernity, this book delves into the intricacies of these movements to examine the implications of religious change in the new millennium. The authors provide an incisive assessment of religious change in the West and Asia to suggest an eclecticism in re-enchantment that will usher in new ideas about charisma, consciousness and spirituality. These ideas focus on new forms of shamanism that point the way to experiences of empowerment beyond the structures of disenchantment.

The Brahma Kumaris as a 'Reflexive Tradition' - Responding to Late Modernity (Paperback): John Walliss The Brahma Kumaris as a 'Reflexive Tradition' - Responding to Late Modernity (Paperback)
John Walliss
R1,130 Discovery Miles 11 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2002. Drawing on primary research on the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, a millenarian New Religious Movement of Indian origin, this book examines the status of tradition in the contemporary world through a critical engagement with the recent social theory of Anthony Giddens on the emergence of a post-traditional society. Wallis examines both the ways in which forms of tradition not only persist but also flourish in the contemporary world and also the manner in which such traditions are drawn on and (re)created by individuals in their ongoing construction of self-identity. Illuminating some of the difficulties encountered when social theory is applied to 'the real world', this book also offers a way of theorising about the status of contemporary religiosity that does not refer directly to the notion of secularisation.

Michael Myers
R4,641 Discovery Miles 46 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This critique of western systematic theology borrows insights from India and other traditions; it is not a synthesis of religious traditions. The book examines the traditional topics of systematic theology - such as the existence and nature of God, revelation and reason, religious ethics and human practice, the relation of God to the world - and allows these topics to grow in conversation with India and to change according to dialogical insights.

Psychology and Religion - An Introduction (Paperback): Michael Argyle Psychology and Religion - An Introduction (Paperback)
Michael Argyle
R1,193 Discovery Miles 11 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Should psychology try to explain religion or try to understand it? Pioneers in psychology like Sigmund Freud and William James took opposing views on the matter and it has been hotly debated ever since. Interestingly though in the past psychology was used to attack religion recent findings in the area have been more sympathetic to religion. How should we understand their relationship today?
Michael Argyle's new book is an introduction to the psychology of religion from one of the world's most famous experimental psychologists. He ranges over the whole of psychology to look at the results of psychology's study of religion including those of his own important experiments. Full of fascinating and surprising insights into people and their religious worlds, his belief in both the empirical value of psychology and the spiritual value of religion are evident in this comprehensive and accessible survey of what psychologists know about religion - and what they don't.
