Men of Honour (Hardcover): Frevert Men of Honour (Hardcover)
Frevert
R1,957 Discovery Miles 19 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Men of Honour is a wide-ranging account of the duel and its significance, from the early modern period to the twentieth century. Ute Frevert challenges the conventional view that the practice of settling disputes by duelling had died out in Europe by the end of the nineteenth century. Focusing on Germany, she draws on newspaper reports, archives and biographies to show that duelling continued to be practised widely among bourgeoisie and nobility until at least the First World War, and even later. Frevert discusses the social function of the duel and the changes it underwent between the early modern period and the twentieth century. She describes the men who took part - from young students to officers of rank, from famous writers and poets to mature noblemen - and illustrates the different times and places they chose for their combat. She explores the meaning of the duel for the participants, and in particular the ideal of 'honour' among men which compelled so many to put their lives at great risk. Men of Honour is a detailed and vivid account of male self-images and modes of behaviour in bourgeois society. It will be welcomed by students and researchers in social and cultural history and by anyone interested in the history of duelling.

The Interruption of Heteronormativity in Higher Education - Critical Queer Pedagogies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Michael Seal The Interruption of Heteronormativity in Higher Education - Critical Queer Pedagogies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Michael Seal
R2,215 Discovery Miles 22 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines how heteronormativity in higher education can be interrupted and resisted. Located within the theoretical framework of queer and critical pedagogy and based on extensive empirical research, the author explores the dynamics of heteronormativity and its interruption on professional courses in a range of higher education institutions. Reactions to attempt to interrupt it were nuanced: while strategies of contested engagement, avoidance and retreat were expressed, heterosexualities were largely un-examined and un-articulated. 'Coming out' needs to be a pedagogical act, carried out concurrently with the interruptions of other social constructions and binary oppositions. The author calls for co-created and co-held meta-reflexive and liminal spaces that emphasise inter-subjectivity, encounters, and working in the moment. These spaces must de-construct and reconstruct pedagogical power and knowledge to promote collective intersubjective consciousnesses, and widen the vision of the reflective practitioner to that of the pedagogical practitioner. This pioneering book is a call to action to all those concerned with interrupting and problematising presumed binary categories of sexuality within the heterosexual matrix.

Persisting Patriarchy - Intersectionalities, Negotiations, Subversions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Kochurani Abraham Persisting Patriarchy - Intersectionalities, Negotiations, Subversions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Kochurani Abraham
R2,429 Discovery Miles 24 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the operational dynamics of patriarchy that is deeply woven into the Indian cultural fabric and its persistence in spite of women advancing in Human Development Indices. In studying the situation of women of the Catholic Syrian Christian community of Kerala, South India, as a case of analysis, Kochurani Abraham identifies caste consciousness and religious prescriptions of this community as the main factors that intersect with gendered identity construction and succeed in keeping women within its patriarchal confines. While women do engage in negotiating patriarchy through what can be termed simulative, tactical, and 'agensic' bargains, this remains a 'politics of survival' as it does not challenge the established gender order. In this context, making a shift from 'politics of survival' to a 'politics of subversion' is imperative for challenging persisting patriarchies.

Waithood - Gender, Education, and Global Delays in Marriage and Childbearing (Paperback): Marcia C. Inhorn, Nancy J.... Waithood - Gender, Education, and Global Delays in Marriage and Childbearing (Paperback)
Marcia C. Inhorn, Nancy J. Smith-Hefner
R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The concept of "Waithood" was developed by political scientist Diane Singerman to describe the expanding period of time between adolescence and full adulthood as young people wait to secure steady employment and marry. The contributors to this volume employ the waithood concept as a frame for richly detailed ethnographic studies of "youth in waiting" from a variety of world areas, including the Middle East Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S, revealing that whether voluntary or involuntary, the phenomenon of youth waithood necessitates a recognition of new gender and family roles.

Elena Laurenzi, Manuela Mosca
R3,987 Discovery Miles 39 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores and traces the progressive activism and radical ideas of several elite women in Italy beginning in the early 20th century. It discusses the shared political culture that shaped the thinking and the activity of these women, mainly oriented towards political philanthropy and work, seen as the cornerstone of a comprehensive redefinition of gender relations. It also discusses the connections linking them to an international network of women involved in similar political actions and economic initiatives addressing women's' interests, as well as their legacy for the next generations. With essays from a range of scholars, this book provides an interdisciplinary framework for understanding these activists and deals with methodological and historiographical issues in reconstructing women's contribution to history.

Gender and the Changing Face of Higher Education in Asia Pacific (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Deane E. Neubauer, Surinderpal Kaur Gender and the Changing Face of Higher Education in Asia Pacific (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Deane E. Neubauer, Surinderpal Kaur
R3,338 Discovery Miles 33 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book establishes gender issues as a major focus within developments shaping higher education in the Asia Pacific region. The discussion is framed as a response to various dedicated efforts, such as that of the United Nations, to foreground gender as a site for political discourse throughout the region. Throughout the volume, authors confront issues that continue to gain prominence in higher education as a policy arena, including the degree to which higher education operates within a framework of gender equity and how higher education appointments-even promotions-are sensitive to gender. By touching specific instances throughout Korea, Japan, China, Australia, India, Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan, authors offer an unprecedented big-picture view of gender-relevant policy issues.

Intersectionality and Women's Access to Justice in Africa (Hardcover): J. Jarpa Dawuni Intersectionality and Women's Access to Justice in Africa (Hardcover)
J. Jarpa Dawuni; Foreword by Julia Sebutinde; Contributions by Maame Efua Addadzi-Koom, Michael Addaney, Rebecca Emiene Badejogbin, …
R3,588 Discovery Miles 35 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Intersectionality and Women's Access to Justice, edited by J. Jarpa Dawuni, propounds layered intersectionality as a paradigm for examining how gendered factors affect women's access to justice, whether as judges or litigants. Through intersectional and decolonial frameworks, the contributors analyze the lived experiences of women and their access to justice by situating the courtroom as both a spatial and a temporal arena for seeking justice (as litigants) and for seeking access to the bench (as judges). This book examines patterns of mutually reinforcing discriminatory practices that women share based on common gender identities and depending on which identities are at play at a given point in time in both traditional and statutory courts. The book provides recommendations for various justice sector providers.

Marginalisation of Older Men - The Lost Boys (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Deborah L. Mulligan Marginalisation of Older Men - The Lost Boys (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Deborah L. Mulligan
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Marginalisation of Older Men: The Lost Boys focuses on the phenomenon of the marginalisation of older men and the impact of gendered ageing as a pathologic disorder leading to suicide ideation, rather than a celebratory state. In this engaging investigation,Deborah Mulligan explains why and how some older men have become marginalised in society, and the effects of this social isolation. The book offers effective and unique methods for researching marginalised groups and individuals to maximise innovativeness, reciprocity and utility for research participants. Mulligan skilfully articulates and communicates the hitherto unheard voices of older males. These voices represent a vital element in the mitigation of loneliness, social isolation and suicide. The lived experience of these individual men and their peers provides vital health information for older men in both contemporary and future society.

Gender Inequalities in Africa's Mining Policies - A Study of Inequalities, Resource Conflict and Sustainability... Gender Inequalities in Africa's Mining Policies - A Study of Inequalities, Resource Conflict and Sustainability (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Francis Onditi
R3,128 Discovery Miles 31 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book develops a discursive 'equalitarian' theoretical framework for studying African mining ecosystem issues and policy interventions. The theory of 'equalitarianism' is developed as an alternative to the reductionist approach that has dominated post-colonial debates about the classical jus ad bellum requirements to empower women in development spaces. However, the classical approach narrows the debate down to "women issues," rather than the 'whole-of-society.' As a consequence of this reductionism, women continue to be devalued in the mining sector, characterized by poverty traps, power struggles, and a lack of capacity to engage in large-scale mining (LSM) activities. This book advances principles for a holistic approach, and spells out the implications for women across the mining value chain. Drawing on moral scholarship, the book poses that for women to gain access to strategic spaces in the mining sector, the drive for empowerment must be embedded within 'whole-of-society' principles. This book is of interest to scholars researching gender policy, public policy, political philosophy, conflictology, and human geography. It also offers practitioners a guide for evaluating their policy work on mainstreaming gender in the mining sector, presenting options for financing, forging partnership and planning for an inclusive economic development in Africa, and beyond.

Men I've Never Been (Hardcover): Michael Sadowski Men I've Never Been (Hardcover)
Michael Sadowski
R572 Discovery Miles 5 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Men I've Never Been recounts Michael Sadowski's odyssey as a boy who shuns his own identity-and, ultimately, his sexual orientation-in order to become who he thinks he's supposed to be. Beginning with the memory of a four-year-old sitting in a dingy dive bar, sounding out newspaper headlines while his boasting father collects drinks from onlookers, each chapter highlights a different image of manhood that Sadowski saw at home, at school, or on television-from sports heroes, hunters, and game show hosts to his charismatic but hard-drinking father. As he learns not to talk, laugh, cry, or love, he retreats further behind a stoic mask of silence-outwardly well-functioning but emotionally isolated, sinking under the weight of the past. Through wrenching tragedy and tense, life-threatening challenges, Sadowski learns to find love, purpose, and healthy self-regard. In coming to understand his identity and his place within his family, he meditates on the power of real human connection and comes to grasp the damage of his troubled upbringing and the traumas caused by toxic masculinity. By turns comic and tragic, this nuanced memoir uncovers the false selves we create to get along in the world and the price we pay to maintain them.

The Queer Bookishness of Romanticism - Ornamental Community (Hardcover): Michael E. Robinson The Queer Bookishness of Romanticism - Ornamental Community (Hardcover)
Michael E. Robinson
R3,023 Discovery Miles 30 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How did the buying and collecting of books figure in the lives and works of the Romantics, those supposed apostles of spiritualized poetic genius? Why was book collecting controversial during the Romantic period, and what role has book collecting played in the history of homophobia? The Queer Bookishness of Romanticism: Ornamental Community addresses these and more questions about the suppressed bookish dimension of Romanticism, as well as Romanticism's historical forebears and Victorian inheritors. The analysis ranges widely, addressing the bookish proclivities of the "romantic friends" the Ladies of Llangollen, the camp works about book collecting produced by a subculture calling themselves "ornamental gentlemen," narratives of prototypically punk collecting and flaneuring by the essayist and collector Charles Lamb, and rare-book forgeries by Thomas J. Wise and Harry Forman, queer bibliographer-scholars responsible for canonizing some of the Romantic poets during the Victorian period. In the process, this book uncovers surprising connections between conceptions of literature and sexuality; literary materiality and queerness; and forgery, sexuality, and authorship.

Diana C Parry, Corey W Johnson, Simone Fullagar
R3,663 Discovery Miles 36 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The proliferation of digital technologies, virtual spaces, and new forms of engagement raise key questions about the changing nature of gender relations and identities within democratic societies. This book offers a unique collection of chapters that brings together scholars from diverse backgrounds to explore how gender experiences and identities are being transformed by digital technologies in ways that affirm or deny social justice.

Infertility and Non-Traditional Family Building - From Assisted Reproduction to Adoption in the Media (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Infertility and Non-Traditional Family Building - From Assisted Reproduction to Adoption in the Media (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Rebecca Feasey
R2,209 Discovery Miles 22 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the representation of infertility, assisted reproduction, miscarriage, adoption and surrogacy in a wide range of media, including blogs, vlogs, social media posts and factual programming. In so doing, it illustrates how pregnancy loss, involuntary childlessness and non-traditional mothering are being depicted across the media landscape. Whilst the topic of motherhood has emerged as a significant area of academic debate, narratives of unsuccessful or unconventional mothering have remained largely absent, even at a time when there is a growing conversation about infertility online. Timely, pertinent and original, the book demonstrates the importance of a broader and more informed cultural discussion about fertility and family building.

Queering and Querying the Paradise of Paradox - LGBT Language, New Media, and Visual Cultures in Modern-Day Brazil (Hardcover):... Queering and Querying the Paradise of Paradox - LGBT Language, New Media, and Visual Cultures in Modern-Day Brazil (Hardcover)
Steven F. Butterman
R3,678 Discovery Miles 36 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides readers with a study of the characteristics that make life unique for sexual minorities in Brazil while also viewing Brazil in relation to global LGBT sociopolitical movements. It critically assesses the complex relationship(s) between the visual arts and political activism, carefully analyzing artistic, cinematic, and photographic representations of LGBTQ identities. Brazil provides a useful case to example, with the cultivation of ambiguity in contemporary (re)constructions of queer life. In this book, the author conducts the first comprehensive discourse analysis of the dynamics and features of the largest LGBT Pride Parade in the world. This problematizes and analyzes the relationship between burgeoning critical socio-political movements and institutions and the language and new media discourses used to configure and conceptualize them. The aim of this project is to create a theoretical scholarly framework promoting linkages between political activism and academic scholarship and by using discourse analysis, the intricacies of terminology Brazilian sexual minorities adopt and adapt, illustrating the development of LGBTQ identities through performative language use.

Kinship, Patriarchal Structure and Women's Bargaining with Patriarchy in Rural Sindh, Pakistan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021):... Kinship, Patriarchal Structure and Women's Bargaining with Patriarchy in Rural Sindh, Pakistan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Nadia Agha
R3,121 Discovery Miles 31 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book provides insights into the prevailing patriarchal system in rural Pakistan. It elaborates on the kinship system in rural Sindh and explores how young married women strategize and negotiate with patriarchy. Drawing on qualitative methodologies, the book reveals the strong relationship between poverty and the perpetuation of patriarchy. Women's strategies help elevate their position in their families, such as attention to household tasks, producing children, and doing handicraft work for their well-being. These conditions are usually seen as evidence of women's subordination, but these are also strategies for survival where accommodation to patriarchy wins them approval. The book concludes that women's life-long struggle is, in fact, a technique of negotiating with patriarchy. In so doing, they internalize the culture that rests on their subordination and reproduce it in older age in exercising power by oppressing other junior women.

Transnational LGBT Activism and UK-Based NGOs - Colonialism and Power (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Matthew Farmer Transnational LGBT Activism and UK-Based NGOs - Colonialism and Power (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Matthew Farmer
R2,887 Discovery Miles 28 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contributes an analysis of UK-based non-governmental organisations engaged in transnational lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) activism, within a broader recognition of the complexities that British colonial legacies perpetuate in contemporary international relations. From this analysis, the book suggests that greater engagement with intersectional and decolonial approaches to transnational activism would allow for a more transformative solidarity that challenges the broader impacts of coloniality on LGBT people's lives globally. Case studies are used to explore UK actors' participation in the complexities of contemporary transnational LGBT activism, including activist responses to developments in Brunei between 2014 and 2019, and the use of LGBT aid conditionality by Western governments. Activist engagements with legacies of British colonialism are also explored, including a focus on 'sodomy laws' and the Commonwealth, as well as the challenges faced by LGBT people seeking asylum in the UK.

The Pathologisation of Homosexuality in Fascist Italy - The Case of 'G' (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Gabriella Romano The Pathologisation of Homosexuality in Fascist Italy - The Case of 'G' (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Gabriella Romano
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This open access book investigates the pathologisation of homosexuality during the fascist regime in Italy through an analysis of the case of G., a man with "homosexual tendencies" interned in the Collegno mental health hospital in 1928. No systematic study exists on the possibility that Fascism used internment in an asylum as a tool of repression for LGBT people, as an alternative to confinement on an island, prison or home arrests. This research offers evidence that in some cases it did. The book highlights how the dictatorship operated in a low-key, shadowy and undetectable manner, bending pre-existing legislation. Its brutality was - and still is - difficult to prove. It also emphasises the ways in which existing stereotypes on homosexuality were reinforced by the regime propaganda in support of its so-called moralising campaign and how families, the police and the medical professionals joined forces in implementing this form of repression.

This unique collection brings a rarely-seen indigenous and global perspective to the study of gender and psychology. Within these chapters, researchers who live and work in the countries and cultures they study examine gender-based norms, values, expression, and relations across diverse Western and non-Western societies. Familiar as well as less-covered locations and topics are analyzed, including China, New Zealand, Israel, Turkey, Central America, the experience of refugees, and gendered health inequities across Africa such as in the treatment of persons with HIV. Included, too, are examples of culturally appropriate interventions to address disparities, and data on the extent to which these steps toward equality are working. Structurally, the volume is divided into three sections. The first two parts of the book take readers on a journey to different regions of the world to illustrate the most recent trends in research concerning gender issues, and then outline present implications and future prospects for the psychological analysis of both gender & culture. The third section of the book has an applied perspective and focuses on the cultural norms and values reinforcing gender equality as well as cultural and social barriers to them. A sampling of the topics covered: Sexual orientation across culture and time. A broader conceptualization of sexism in Poland. An analysis of gender roles within the family in Switzerland Modern-day dowries in South Asian international arranged marriages. The current state of gender equality in the United States of America. Socio-cultural determinants of gender disparity in Ghana. Psychology of Gender Through the Lens of Culture is a milestone toward core human rights and goals worldwide, and a critical resource for psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, gender studies researchers, public policy makers and all those interested in promoting gender equality throughout the world.

It focuses on topics including, how to develop gender-inclusive practices to challenge students' attitudes and behaviours; whether there are institutional constraints that prevent trainers from implementing non-heteronormative practices in their teaching; and how gender awareness can become an everyday mode of expression. Positioned at the lively interface of gender and translation studies, this work will be of interest to practitioners and scholars from across the fields of linguistics, education, sociology and cultural studies.

Tradition and Transformation in Mohiniyattam Dance - An Ethnographic History (Hardcover): Justine Lemos Tradition and Transformation in Mohiniyattam Dance - An Ethnographic History (Hardcover)
Justine Lemos
R2,527 Discovery Miles 25 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The movement of Mohiniyattam dance is a rich semeiotic system that is inclusive of controversy, embodied gender ideals, and cultural information. The historical and cultural conditions that enabled the emergence of Mohiniyattam as the epitome of "lasya" ("feminine") unfolded out of a specific historical and cultural moment. Tradition and Transformation in Mohiniyattam Dance: An Ethnographic History demonstrates how Mohiniyattam, a form previously stigmatized, was reinvented as a Sign of traditional Keralite Womanhood. The book traces how the emergence of Mohiniyattam as a traditional form of dance based on a feminine aesthetic was synchronistic with the outlawing of polyandrous marriage practices and devadasi practices as well as changes in matrilineal inheritance the outlawing of and reforms in women's dress customs in Kerala, India. These layers of history and cultural meaning permitted Mohiniyattam's renaissance as a Sign of female grace and tradition. Throughout, the author argues that practicing and learning movement is a gateway to understanding a system of semiosis. Danced movement itself can be a locust, a bell-weather, and even an agent of social change.

Beyond Trans - Does Gender Matter? (Hardcover): Heath Fogg Davis Beyond Trans - Does Gender Matter? (Hardcover)
Heath Fogg Davis
R2,620 Discovery Miles 26 200 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Goes beyond transgender to question the need for gender classification Beyond Trans pushes the conversation on gender identity to its limits: questioning the need for gender categories in the first place. Whether on birth certificates or college admissions applications or on bathroom doors, why do we need to mark people and places with sex categories? Do they serve a real purpose or are these places and forms just mechanisms of exclusion? Heath Fogg Davis offers an impassioned call to rethink the usefulness of dividing the world into not just Male and Female categories but even additional categories of Transgender and gender fluid. Davis, himself a transgender man, explores the underlying gender-enforcing policies and customs in American life that have led to transgender bathroom bills, college admissions controversies, and more, arguing that it is necessary for our society to take real steps to challenge the assumption that gender matters. He examines four areas where we need to re-think our sex-classification systems: sex-marked identity documents such as birth certificates, driver's licenses and passports; sex-segregated public restrooms; single-sex colleges; and sex-segregated sports. Speaking from his own experience and drawing upon major cases of sex discrimination in the news and in the courts, Davis presents a persuasive case for challenging how individuals are classified according to sex and offers concrete recommendations for alleviating sex identity discrimination and sex-based disadvantage. For anyone in search of pragmatic ways to make our world more inclusive, Davis' recommendations provide much-needed practical guidance about how to work through this complex issue. A provocative call to action, Beyond Trans pushes us to think how we can work to make America truly inclusive of all people.

Timothy Eugene Murphy
R1,634 Discovery Miles 16 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An ethnography of urban citizenship, global belonging, and queerness in a rapidly growing provincial city in the Global South, Queerly Cosmopolitan explores how people develop a sense of belonging in a city understood by many to be "unimportant" and "in the middle of nowhere." In his exploration of the city of Teresina and its inhabitants' attempts to establish a sense of belonging and self-worth, Timothy Eugene Murphy creatively employs queer theory to investigate a community of bohemians. As he follows the participants through different realms of life-nocturnal bohemia, work, family, and intimate friendships-Murphy demonstrates how widely circulating cultural forms, from music to sexuality, offer upwardly mobile communities ways to fashion cosmopolitan lives in even the most peripheral locations.
