The Handbook of Clinical Anaesthesia has been completely updated for this new edition, providing trainee anaesthetists with a concise but comprehensive source of clinical information, and qualified anaesthetists with an indispensable aide. Written and edited by experts in the field, this compact but detailed text provides all the essential practical knowledge required by anaesthetists on co-existing medical conditions, operative procedures, and techniques. The handbook is presented in Parts 1 to 3. The first part covers Patient Conditions; the second part Surgical Procedures; and the third part Anaesthetic Factors. Each part is subdivided into sections on each organ system, and each section is divided into chapters. These chapters are in alphabetical order, and cover all common and rare conditions that anaesthetists will encounter within their practice.Trainees will find this book to be an excellent general guide, but in particular a provider of reliable information in preparation for examination as well as teaching clinical technique and practice.
Hypnosis, amnesia, and immobility are three major therapeutic endpoints of general anesthesia. In one to two cases out of a thousand, hypnosis and amnesia are not achieved - often leaving a patient immobile but capable of experiencing and remembering intraoperative events. Awareness during general anesthesia is one of the most dreaded complications of surgery and is feared by patients and clinicians alike. Despite many advances in the field, there are also a number of unresolved questions that persist. Some of the difficulties in the detection and prevention of awareness during anesthesia relate to the underlying complexities of the neuroscientific basis of consciousness. Consciousness, Awareness, and Anesthesia is a multidisciplinary approach to both the scientific problem of consciousness and the clinical problem of awareness during general anesthesia. An international cadre of authors with expertise in anesthesiology, neurobiology, and philosophy provides a cutting-edge perspective. No other book on the subject has drawn from such a breadth of scholarship.
Cambridge Pocket Clinician / Obstetric Anesthesia is a definitive, comprehensive and yet easily navigated reference for all anesthesia practitioners caring for parturients. Designed to offer rapid access to information, it is suited as a convenient reference on the Labor Floor. Over 400 topics are covered in detail, including pharmacology, physiology, delivery of anesthesia, and management of co-existing diseases as they relate to pregnancy. A detailed formulary of common medications, emphasizing indications, contraindications, and maternal and fetal effects of the drugs is also included.
Undergraduate medical education is continuously changing to meet the requirements for the training of future medical practitioners. Over the last few years the concept of perioperative medicine has evolved, encompassing the preoperative assessment and optimisation of patients, the intraoperative and postoperative management of these patients and importantly the diagnosis and treatment of the critically ill patient. The relevance of this to undergraduate medical students is obvious. Core Topics in Perioperative Medicine provides concise, informative chapters on many aspects of perioperative medicine, allowing medical students to bridge the gap between final year clinical attachments in this specialty, and first year house officer jobs. It aims to guide the reader through the perioperative period via short, up-to-date chapters, each giving a comprehensive account of the subject and its relevance to perioperative medicine.

This book will provide all the basic details of neuroanaesthesia and how management of different neurosurgical cases may differ. Simple issues such as neurological examination of patient, understanding CT-scan and MRI scans along with anaesthetic management are discussed in simple language, making this book a ready-reckoner. The title provides an insight into all possible aspects of anesthetic management of neurosurgical and commonly encountered neurologic patients. The book also includes chapters related to allied specialities such as critical care, neurology and neuroradiology, making it a complete package.
Have you struggled to find information on diathermy, ventilation, types of anaesthetic, what the anaesthetist does, or problems with positioning - the little bits other books leave out? If so, then this is the book for you, anaesthetics tailored specifically to the MRCS syllabus. The book is presented in three sections. The first focuses on applied basic sciences for the surgeon. The second discusses peri-operative care and specific considerations that arise in the surgical specialties from both the surgical and anaesthetic view-point. Each chapter is written by clinical specialists in surgery and anaesthesia, with up-to-date information on topics including damage limitation surgery in trauma, transfusion practice, CPET testing, and enhanced recovery. The third section, At a Glance, is written in an easily accessible, brief format for revision or reference. Topics covered include, post-operative cognitive dysfunction, coagulation, fluids and scoring systems. This is an essential text for all surgical trainees."
This new and fully updated edition of Anaesthetic Aide-Memoire provides a compilation of key lists, numerical data, physiological and pharmacological formulae, procedural algorithms, important information on illnesses pertaining to anaesthesia, data on equipment, clinical measurement, and intensive care management that will serve as a valuable quick reference for senior anaesthetists in training and for consultants in anaesthesia. It is the ideal first reference source to consult when a fact, statistic, or formula eludes the memory, and as such will also prove to be a useful aid to teaching. It will also be useful for candidates for the FRCA examination who will already understand the basic physiology and pharmacology underpinning anaesthesia but who need reminding occasionally in a clear, concise, didactic way.
Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are used by many examination boards as a way of testing a broad spectrum of knowledge in an easily administered and unbiased way. They form a critical part of both the Primary and Final FRCA (Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists) examinations. This book builds on GMM's established reputation in publishing for postgraduate anaesthetic exams and particularly for the MCQ component of the exams (e.g. the QBase book and CD-ROM series and accompanying textbooks). Six 90-question examinations, and a 30-question sample examination are presented, offering 570 individual questions with detailed model answers and making this book a comprehensive self-learning tool, especially when used in conjun ction with other key texts such as Fundamentals of Anaesthesia.
Brain edema is found in a wide variety of clinical disorders including stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage, head injury, brain tumors and hydrocephalus. This volume brings together clinical and basic scientists from all over the world. Their expertise in the understanding of brain edema and shifts in brain water compartments has led to a further significant step in our understanding of those diseases characterized by brain edema. This book has also drawn on the expertise of the International Advisory Board of the Brain Edema Society, who have carefully summarized each section, thus providing an easy-to-read summary of the latest advances in each subject. The book is therefore much more than a collection of papers: it represents a critical appraisal and puts each paper into modern scientific context. The greatest advances have come from the rapid development of modern imaging techniques, especially with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Imaging can now produce "water maps" and "metabolic profiles" that bring brain metabolism and water content right into every clinic with access to MRI. This book provides the background knowledge to understand these pathophysiological changes.
This text is designed for those who would become consultants in pediatric anesthesia. It is a self-assessment programmed text for residents, fellows, and clinicians in the field of pediatric anesthesiology. Its case-based approach encourages readers to collaborate with colleagues, improve their oral presentation skills, and prepare for challenging OR situations by explaining various anesthesia care plans and why various data are required before or during the care of the pediatric patient.
This book provides foundational knowledge of intraoperative monitoring (IOM) and is written for the range of clinicians who monitor the function of the nervous system during surgery, from new technologists to neurophysiologists and neurosurgeons. Early chapters describe the building blocks of IOM in accessible terms and are followed by practical chapters on monitoring and mapping that show basic and clinical science in action . Anesthesiologists and trainees with an interest in diagnosing and managing pain will appreciate the inclusion of chapters on the electrophysiological assessment of spinal cord pathology and on the treatment of pain. "Principles of Neurophysiological Assessment, Mapping, and Monitoring" is designed for use as a text in academic courses or in corporate training programs. It also provides a concise refresher for experienced clinicians and for physicians, neurophysiologists, and technologists preparing for board exams. "
