Practitioner's Guide to Empirically Based Measures of School Behavior (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Mary Lou Kelley, David... Practitioner's Guide to Empirically Based Measures of School Behavior (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Mary Lou Kelley, David Reitman, George H. Noell
R2,826 Discovery Miles 28 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Children's display of unacceptable behavior in the school setting, school violence, academic underachievement, and school failure represent a cluster of problems that touches all aspects of society. Children with learning and behavior problems are much more likely to be un- ployed, exhibit significant emotional and behavior disorders in adulthood, as well as become incarcerated. For example, by adolescence, children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity D- order are more likely to be retained a grade, drop out of school, have contact with the law, or fair worse along a number of dimensions than their unaffected siblings (Barkely, 1998). Identification, assessment, and treatment of children with externalizing behavior problems and learningdisabilities is critical to optimizing development and prevention of relatively - tractable behavioral and emotional problems in adulthood. For example, poor interpersonal problem solving and social skills excesses and deficits are strongly associated with poor o- come in adolescence and adulthood. The school is where children learn essential academic, social, and impulse control skills that allow them to function effectively in later years. School is where problems in these areas can be most easily identified and addressed. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of assessment practices for evaluating children's externalizing behavior problems exhibited in the school environment. Reviews of approximately 100 assessment devices for measuring children's externalizing problems are included. Instruments include structured interviews, rating scales, and observational methods.

Violence and Psychopathy (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Adrian Raine, Jose Sanmartin Violence and Psychopathy (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Adrian Raine, Jose Sanmartin
R4,254 Discovery Miles 42 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Adrian Raine Department of Psychology. University of Southern California. USA Jose Sanmartin Queen Sojia Center for the Study of Violence. Valencia. Spain The problems that psychopathic and violent offenders create for society are not restricted to North America. Instead, these offenders create havoc throughout the world, including Europe. In recognition of this fact, Queen Sophia of Spain has promoted a Center for the Study of Violence which recognizes both biological and social contributions to the cause of violence. In November 1999, the Queen Sofia Center for the Study of Violence held its IV International Meeting on the Biology and Sociology of Violence. This fourth Meeting, which was under the Honorary Presidency of H. M. The Queen of Spain, examined the biological, psychological and social aspects of the psychopath, the violent offender, and the serial killer. This book presents some of the key contributions made at that conference and which were first published in Spanish in 2000 by Ariel Press. A key thrust of this book, and a stance shared by all of its contributors, is the notion that violence and psychopathy simply cannot be understood solely, or even fundamentally, in terms of social and environmental forces and influences. Nor do biological factors offer an exclusive explanation.

The Best is Yet to Come - A Memoir about Football and Finding a Way Through the Dark (Paperback): Alan O'Mara The Best is Yet to Come - A Memoir about Football and Finding a Way Through the Dark (Paperback)
Alan O'Mara
R453 R397 Discovery Miles 3 970 Save R56 (12%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Three years ago, when Cavan footballer Alan O'Mara was twenty-two, he spoke out about his battle with depression which led him to contemplate suicide. Only the thought of his parents and the pain that they would experience in his death prevented him from taking his own life. Now, in The Best is Yet to Come, he tells his story. From the role the GAA played in his life, to the decision he made to share his journey, this is an account of an ordinary young man, a GAA star, who found a way to move past the dark thoughts that beset his mind during his worst days, and who discovered that the only way out of the darkness is to ask for help. 'In summoning his courage and becoming the first active inter-county player to speak of his experiences with depression, Alan O'Mara gives a much needed voice to an aspect of human experience that has been cloaked in silence and stigma. This book, which is needed now more than ever, gives a rare glimpse into the complex inner world of depression and will give hope to those suffering in silence, guidance to those seeking solutions and inspiration for families and friends supporting loved ones.' Pain and Neuroimmune Interactions (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Nayef E. Saade, Suhayl J. Jabbur, A. Vania Apkarian Pain and Neuroimmune Interactions (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Nayef E. Saade, Suhayl J. Jabbur, A. Vania Apkarian
R3,008 Discovery Miles 30 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is a result of an International Symposium on pain and neuroimmune interactions, held in Beirut, Lebanon, in May of 1999. The results of research on the neural mechanisms that relate tissue damage to pain show that the sensation of pain and suffering can be considered as part of mechanisms that involve not only sizeable areas in the brain but also simultaneous activations of the immune and the endocrine systems. Pain involves the sharing of molecular mechanisms between the nervous, immune and endocrine systems that can interact at peripheral and, ultimately, central levels. Chronic pain can then be viewed as a corollary of the imbalance in the cross-talk between these systems, which could lead to new treatment strategies. The aim of this volume is not to deal with acute pain that serves as an alarm signal, but to attempt to explain the molecular mechanisms of chronic pain considered as a multifactorial syndrome or disease.

The Self-Knower - A Hero Under Control (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): R.A. Wicklund, Martina Eckert The Self-Knower - A Hero Under Control (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
R.A. Wicklund, Martina Eckert
R2,890 Discovery Miles 28 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The self-knower has become a hero within many contemporary cultures. This hero goes by various different titles, including the" self-insightful/' the "self-actualized/' the "autonomous and mature/' the "representative of independent thinking/' the "morally virtuous/' and many more. The common denominators of civilization's preoccupation with the self knower are (1) the mundane, popular literature that draws our attention to our "inner being" and (2) the remarkable intensity of therapies and quasitherapies that promise insight into the true core of our inner being. A characteristic example from an extensive, week-or month-long training course would read, "Come because you want to discover your self ... . Through Mr. X the group leaderl, we can realize our true identities ... . This gives our lives sense and perspective." We have tried to trace the logic underlying the diverse self-knower movements and have found three common themes underlying them. For one, the varieties of theories and treatments associated with self-knowl edge are interested exclusively in the appearance of the self-knower. Each representative of the self-knower school has its own set of criteria for identifying the self-knowing person, and in tum, each member of the self-knower school represents certain convictions about how individuals should be evaluated. For instance, if someone manifests warmth and char ity, that person is likely to be pronounced healthy, adjusted, and self knowing."

H. HAFNER Schizophrenia Research Unit, Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim, Germany The present volume contains the lectures and invited discussions of the sympo sium on "Risk and protective factors in schizophrenia - towards a conceptual model of the disease process," which was held at the International Science Forum of the University of Heidelberg from October 25 to 27, 200l. They are supple mented by a "Summary and outlook," in which Peter Jones gives a brief overview of the results and perspectives featured in the presentations and discussions. The contributions and discussions reflect the open-minded and creative atmosphere at the meeting. The systematically structured program of the symposium continued the tradition of the Search for the Causes of Schizophrenia symposia, which were th started in 1986 on the occasion of the 600 anniversary of the University of Hei delberg and which are co-organized with Prof. Wagner Farid Gattaz/Sao Paulo. The aim of these symposia and their proceedings volumes 6,8-10] has been to reflect the state of the art in schizophrenia research at their time, and they have successfully done so. In contrast, the present symposium pursued a more lim ited objective and was of a different type. It brought together, around a large table at the International Science Forum in Heidelberg, 22 invited speakers and dis cussants and an equal number of young scientists working in the research fields in question, who were thus given an opportunity to listen and to participate."

Constructions of Widowhood and Virginity in the Middle Ages (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Cindy L. Carlson, Angela Jane Weisl Constructions of Widowhood and Virginity in the Middle Ages (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Cindy L. Carlson, Angela Jane Weisl
R2,789 Discovery Miles 27 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

To be a virgin or a widow never promised a stable, uniform status to a woman during the Middle Ages. Rather, these positions were areas of contestation, constructions that did and still do create and interrogate notions of gender roles, areas of power, areas of disability. For example, chastity is an apparent given for both positions, but the chastity involved may have a number of possible cultural meanings or uses. The articles in Constructions of Widowhood and Virginity in the Middle Ages address many facets of these two female positions in medieval literature: gender constructions; the body and what it means to make it visible, whether in admiration, torture, or martyrdom; issues of physicality and abjection; creations of literary voice for women who write or create situations for them to be written about. A top-notch group of female scholars examines the meanings behind widowhood and virginity both individually and in relation to each other. The focus on both positions in the same volume makes Constructions of Widowhood and Virginity in the Middle Ages an unprecedented work.

Understanding Psychological Assessment (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): William I. Dorfman, Michel Hersen Understanding Psychological Assessment (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
William I. Dorfman, Michel Hersen
R6,375 Discovery Miles 63 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Introductory texts on psychological testing and evaluation historically are not in short supply. Typically, however, such texts have been relatively superficial in their discussion of clinical material and have focused primarily on the theoretical and psychometric properties of indi vidual tests. More practical, clinically relevant presentations of psychological instruments have been confined to individual volumes with advanced and often very technical information geared to the more sophisticated user. Professors in introductory graduate courses are often forced to adopt several advanced texts to cover the material, at the same time helping students wade through unnecessary technical information in order to provide a basic working knowl edge of each test. Understanding Psychological Assessment is an attempt to address these concerns. It brings together into a single volume a broad sampling of the most respected instruments in the psychologist's armamentarium along with promising new tests of cognitive, vocational, and personality functioning. Additionally, it presents the most updated versions of these tests, all in a practical, clearly written format that covers the development, psychometrics, administra tive considerations, and interpretive hypotheses for each instrument. Clinical case studies allow the reader to apply the interpretive guidelines to real clinical data, thereby reinforcing basic understanding of the instrument and helping to insure that both the student and practi tioner can actually begin to use the test. Understanding Psychological Assessment includes cognitive and personality tests for adults, children, and adolescents, as well as chapters on the theory of psychological measurement and integrated report writing."

Tutorials in Motor Neuroscience (Hardcover, 1991 ed.): Jean Requin, George E. Stelmach Tutorials in Motor Neuroscience (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
Jean Requin, George E. Stelmach
R8,257 Discovery Miles 82 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on the topic of "Motor Neuroscience" held at the Hotel San 15-24, 1990. The San Bastiano Hotel Bastiano, Calcatoggio (Corsica), September provided a beautiful setting for the ten day ASI in aresort on the west coast of Corsica, near the island's capital city of Ajaccio. The motivation of this ASI originated from the success of an ASI that we organized eleven years ago at Senanque Abbey in the south of France. Our earlier meeting was successful in providing some coherence to a widely scattered literature while providing up to date knowledge on motor control and learning. Our goal for the second ASI was essentially the same. We wanted to appraise the main theoretical ideas that currently characterize the field by bringing together many of the internationally known scientists who are doing much of the contemporary work. It is our hope that these proceedings will provide some conceptual unification to an expanding and diverse literature on motor control.

The Psychology of Judicial Decision Making (Hardcover): David E. Klein, Gregory Mitchell The Psychology of Judicial Decision Making (Hardcover)
David E. Klein, Gregory Mitchell
R2,702 Discovery Miles 27 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the years, psychologists have devoted uncountable hours to learning how human beings make judgments and decisions. As much progress as scholars have made in explaining what judges do over the past few decades, there remains a certain lack of depth to our understanding. Even where scholars can make consensual and successful predictions of a judge's behavior, they will often disagree sharply about exactly what happens in the judge's mind to generate the predicted result. This volume of essays examines the psychological processes that underlie judicial decision making. The first section of the book takes as its starting point the fact that judges make many of the same judgments and decisions that ordinary people make and considers how our knowledge about judgment and decision-making in general applies to the case of legal judges. In the second section, chapters focus on the specific tasks that judges perform within a unique social setting and examine the expertise and particular modes of reasoning that judges develop to deal with their tasks in this unique setting. Finally, the third section raises questions about whether and how we can evaluate judicial performance, with implications for the possibility of improving judging through the selection and training of judges and structuring of judicial institutions. Together the essays apply a wide range of psychological insights to help us better understand how judges make decisions and to open new avenues of inquiry into the influences on judicial behavior.

How People Change - Inside and Outside Therapy (Hardcover, 1991 ed.): Rebecca C. Curtis, George Stricker How People Change - Inside and Outside Therapy (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
Rebecca C. Curtis, George Stricker
R2,923 Discovery Miles 29 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the myth of Daphne and Apollo, Cupid fired two arrows: one causing flight from love, the other passionate attraction. Cupid aimed his first arrow at Daphne, a beautiful nymph who loved her freedom; the next struck Apollo, who lusted after Daphne. Daphne, frightened and intent upon virginity, fled Apollo but was unable to run fast enough. When her strength was almost gone, she sought protection in the familiar waters of her father's river. He answered her prayers: Her hair became leaves, and her feet, roots growing into the ground; she was transformed into a laurel tree. Apollo, kissing the sprouting bark, pledged to honor Daphne by placing a laurel wreath on the head of every hero who won a victory. Unable to evade the consequences of the arrow that wounded her, Daphne called upon the river, the creative power of both nature and time-a symbol of fertility, but also of oblivion-to help her survive when her strength was gone. Daphne's inner triumph in the face of injury is an appropriate sym bol for the types of transformation witnessed by psychologists. In his book on symbols, Circlot (1962, p. 173) writes that the crowning of the poet, artist, or conqueror with laurel leaves "presupposes a series of inner victories over the negative and dissipative influence of the basest forces. " Further, the tree "denotes the life of the cosmos: its consistence, growth, proliferation, generative, and regenerative processes" (Circlot, 1962, p. 328)."

The Handbook of Divorce Mediation (Hardcover, 1990 ed.): L. Marlow, S.R. Sauber The Handbook of Divorce Mediation (Hardcover, 1990 ed.)
L. Marlow, S.R. Sauber
R3,096 Discovery Miles 30 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mediation, as a procedure to assist couples in dealing with the problems incident to their separation and divorce, is still relatively new in the United States. For the would-be practitioner, that poses certain problems. Divorce mediation cannot provide a long history of generally accepted procedures. Nor is there even a body of information to which would-be practitioners can turn for instruction or guidance. And, of course, there are no established schools that can train or prepare a practitioner to do this work. To make matters worse, the situation is likely to remain in this state for some time to come. Given this fact, it was felt that it would be useful for practitioners (even for those already engaged in divorce mediation) to have a handbook which would trace a typical mediation from its inception to its conclusion and which would provide them with the substantive informa tion they need to know in order to do divorce mediation. It is hoped that this handbook will fill this need. Having said that, however, it must be acknowledged that the purpose of this book is very much beyond that. Until now, divorce mediation in the United States has been shaped principally by such books as O. J. Coogler's Structured Mediation in Divorce Settlements: A Handbook for Marital Mediators, 1 and John Haynes' Divorce Mediation: 2 A Practical Guide for Therapists and Counselors."

Women and Nationalism in the Making of Modern Greece - The Founding of the Kingdom to the Greco-Turkish War (Hardcover):... Women and Nationalism in the Making of Modern Greece - The Founding of the Kingdom to the Greco-Turkish War (Hardcover)
Demetra Tzanaki
R1,466 Discovery Miles 14 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Meticulously researched, this book presents a fresh challenge to notions that women were ultimately beyond politics in nineteenth century Greece, by engaging with our very definitions of the terms politics, citizenship and 'public'. Analyzing the relationship between women and nationalism, and women and politics, the author traces the development of some of the most important norms which formed, and continue to shape our society. Ideas and beliefs that we now may regard as immutable, such as the definition of politics and gender, were novel some two hundred years ago. This new history of women's lives, aspirations and choices in Greece demonstrates the relativity of such value, in order to examine the question of what constitutes 'politics' and so understand where we stand, how we got there, and how we might change.

Origins of Phobias and Anxiety Disorders - Why More Women than Men? (Hardcover): Michelle G. Craske Origins of Phobias and Anxiety Disorders - Why More Women than Men? (Hardcover)
Michelle G. Craske
R3,371 Discovery Miles 33 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first title to be published in the "BRAT Series on Clinical Psychology", this book presents a critical analysis of the theories and empirical evidence to date regarding the origins of phobias and anxiety disorders, and the reasons why more women than men suffer from them. The book moves from a discussion of non-specific temperament to specific risk factors for each anxiety disorder, assuming a hierarchical aetiological model throughout. At each level of analysis, the issue of gender differences is addressed. For example, broad temperamental factors such as traits of negative affectivity and poor emotional regulation are reviewed in terms of their relevance to the group of disorders with which anxiety disorders tend to cluster, such as depression and substance abuse. Biological contributions are covered, along with early life experiences including parenting styles and expectations, and early stressors. The components of anxiety - hypervigilance, threat-laden belief systems and avoidant style - are presented as being common across the anxiety disorders and self-perpetuating. Types of ongoing life experiences that influence the development of one type of anxiety disorder over another are reviewed. Each anxiety disorder is then addressed in detail after considering general principles of fear acquisition and persistence.
