The increasing popularity of cosmetic procedures brings both good news and bad news for you as a potential patient. The good news: there is a ton of information out there to help you become a better informed consumer. The bad news? There is a ton of information out there designed to confuse and deceive you. But here's the thing as you contemplate having your own plastic surgery: how does any of that information apply to you as an individual? How do you even begin to distinguish fact from fiction? How do you decide which procedure is the right one for you? How can you know which doctor and facility are the best choices for your chosen procedure? How can you increase the odds of getting the results you want? How can you be sure you are even a good candidate for plastic surgery in the first place? The more factual information the patient collects, the better off the patient, the surgeon, the anesthesiologist and the support staff are going to be. More factual information is good; inaccurate or little information is downright scary. Author and renowned facial plastic surgeon, Brenton B. Koch, MD, FACS, is going to cut through all the fluff and confusion and tell you in straightforward, honest terms exactly what to ask potential surgeons and their support staff during your plastic surgery consultation. "Together, you and I will walk through a list of questions that has been fourteen years in the making; a series of inquiries designed to bring you greater clarity and confidence as a potential consumer of plastic surgery. These are the questions I get on a day-to-day basis from those well-prepared patients I described above. These are the questions I wish all of my patients would ask me. And not only am I going to give you the questions, but I am also going to give you the answers that I think are the most responsible and helpful. Lastly, I am going to give you a series of questions for you to ask yourself about your motivation, expectations and readiness for plastic surgery. These are the questions I wish all of my patients would ask themselves before they come in for a consultation."
In the right hands, cosmetic or plastic surgery can become a work of beauty and a tremendous boost to a person's self-esteem. In the wrong hands, cosmetic surgery can become a powerful force to destroy one's self-esteem and any trace of confidence a person may have in the very core of his or her soul. In The Ultimate Violation, author Kurtess Lief Scone tells the story of his life-his time suffering from rickets as a young boy; his adolescence; the role his relationship to Jesus Christ has played in his life; and his adulthood, during which, disliking his facial appearance, he underwent plastic surgery. In this memoir, he discusses the malpractice of his surgeon and being forced to deal with the negative consequences followed by mental and emotional issues related to abnormal cosmetic changes. Scone provides tools and strategies to help others find the right cosmetic surgeon. The Ultimate Violation details Scone's journey to seek justice and overcome the embarrassment, shame, and humiliation he experienced at the hands of an unethical surgeon.

This second edition of the Manual of Aesthetic Surgery, in a single-volume format, has been extensively revised to include a variety of new and interesting techniques. The result is a comprehensive book that clearly describes and depicts procedures currently used in aesthetic plastic surgery, with the aid of unsurpassed instructive drawings and high-quality pre- and postoperative photographs. Adjuvant treatments have been brought up to date to encompass the most recent developments. Great importance is attached to the fact that no alloplastic materials are used, but only biological implants, such as collagen, hyaluronic acid, polylactic acid, and autologous fat. All of the important aspects of chemical and laser peeling are presented, with guidance on what is useful and what is not. The section on cosmetic facial surgery includes an excellent new simple method of mini lift (M-Lift) that can be performed under local anesthesia in patients aged 40 and over. Similarly, the section on abdominoplasty presents a new mini abdomen procedure, an elegant and safe method that avoids repositioning of the navel and is ideal following pregnancies and in patients who are only moderately overweight or have slightly slack abdominal skin. Other novel techniques include a so-called de-epithelializing method that permits optimal anatomical positioning of the gluteal folds during a buttock lift and liposuction using a sophisticated Micro-Air system that avoids dimples and hematoma, eases convalescence, and is performed under local anesthesia. This interdisciplinary handbook will prove invaluable to both medical students and more experienced practitioners. It identifies the most appropriate technique for each indication, highlights tips and tricks, identifies pitfalls, and explains complication management. The accompanying DVD, including additional new clips, will further assist the reader in mastering each technique.

Through the discourse of technological embodiment, scientific progress in medicine and technology have advanced to the point that the human body is no longer thought of as a fixed form void of fluidity and refashioning. Surgical body alterations, specifically the hymenoplasty procedure, are a means by which some women (re)instate the appearance of 'virginity.' Within a cultural framework of dominant and subservient groups, this phenomenon is constructed as a controversial practice that uses cosmetic surgery in order to circumvent potential 'honor-killings.' By understanding the unique interrelationships of doctors, patients, and publics, ensuing findings that emerge from this examination show that the hymenoplasty procedure is a discursive rhetorical function with far-reaching implications that are both empowering and disempowering for the patients who are having it done. This book is addressed to professionals within the medical community as well as rhetorical communication scholars and anthropologists who have special interests in the ethics and implications of cutting-edge and controversial medical practices.
