Hair transplantation is in demand worldwide, but because Asian hair tends to be more sparse and coarse than Caucasian hair, transplantation procedures need to be adapted to Asian patients. This book, exclusively devoted to Asian hair, is a complete and comprehensive text written by a group of authors sharing their experience in their specialized fields of hair restoration. Included are many practical tips as well as chapters on regional transplantation such as eyebrows, eyelashes, sideburns, beards, and mustaches, in addition to the usual scalp hair restoration. With its many illustrations, the book gives readers a complete knowledge of hair restoration surgery and provides a quick, easy-to-use reference on Asian hair and the differences in patients' demands. With an influx of new physicians in this challenging field of medicine, further education and training are imperative and must be available to provide a high standard of medical practice. This compilation meets that objective and ultimately makes the valuable contribution of restoring patients' self-confidence.
On its publication An Account of Two Successful Operations for Restoring a Lost Nose (1816) by Joseph Carpue, was the most important work on reconstructive surgery since Gasparo Tagliacozzi, the Sixteenth Century Italian surgeon. Carpue's work is considered to represent the beginnings of modern plastic surgery, the first time for almost 200 years that this type of surgery had been examined in such detail. The widespread religious condemnation of Tagliacozzi's work had meant that methods of plastic surgery ceased to be openly researched for many years. Carpue's account describes procedures on two British Army officers using 'Hindu' rhinoplasty, which included an introduction on the history of both 'Hindu' and 'Taliacotian' methods.

A key problem-solving reference on revision rhinoplasty and reconstructive surgery of the nose Written by a team of expert rhinoplasty and reconstructive surgeons, this practical reference and casebook offers guidelines and step-by-step instructions for dealing with the many minor and major problems that arise in revision rhinoplasty and reconstructive surgery of the nose. Divided into two parts, The Nose - Revision and Reconstruction first describes and discusses the principles and practice of these types of surgery. In the second part, 59 carefully selected cases are presented to the reader with the various surgical problems that can be expected. Revision cases are analyzed and demonstrated in a range of common and rare presentations in patients who had previous functional and aesthetic surgery, and reconstructive surgery for nasal defects or after trauma and tumor resections. This reference also addresses issues relating to psychosomatic problems, psychology, body dysmorphic disorder, patient selection and contraindications, the timing of revision surgery, and specific processes in wound healing. The concepts of septorhinoplasty in various stages of life are also discussed, as they deal with general principles that are essential in any rhinoplasty but are particularly important in revision surgery. The express goal of this book is to steer clear of current trends. Thus, it covers the gamut of closed, open, and endoscopic approaches and all graft and suture techniques, employing the full armamentarium of surgical techniques. The book also aims to improve the reader's skills in preoperative analysis and planning so that typical mistakes can be avoided and the best possible results are achieved the first time. In this sense, the book follows the classic principle of learning from mistakes so that they will not be repeated.

The starting point for the treatment of hip disease depends on how we can preserve the natural hip joint and on steps leading to regeneration of the diseased, injured, or destroyed joint. Preservation and regeneration treatments following traditional and theoretical methods do not need to use expensive materials such as the artificial joints used in arthroplasty. On the other hand, these treatments are difficult to perform and require a long rehabilitation period. The result has been a move away from traditional methods, denying the surgeon experience and knowledge of the benefits associated with the most biologically appropriate treatment. This book, a selection of the papers presented at the 32nd Japanese Hip Society (JHS) Congress, includes the latest knowledge on preservation and regeneration treatments as well as arthroplasty, and is an invaluable source of reference for all who work in the field of orthopedic surgery.
Through the discourse of technological embodiment, scientific progress in medicine and technology have advanced to the point that the human body is no longer thought of as a fixed form void of fluidity and refashioning. Surgical body alterations, specifically the hymenoplasty procedure, are a means by which some women (re)instate the appearance of 'virginity.' Within a cultural framework of dominant and subservient groups, this phenomenon is constructed as a controversial practice that uses cosmetic surgery in order to circumvent potential 'honor-killings.' By understanding the unique interrelationships of doctors, patients, and publics, ensuing findings that emerge from this examination show that the hymenoplasty procedure is a discursive rhetorical function with far-reaching implications that are both empowering and disempowering for the patients who are having it done. This book is addressed to professionals within the medical community as well as rhetorical communication scholars and anthropologists who have special interests in the ethics and implications of cutting-edge and controversial medical practices.
Eye Plastic Surgery is a very unique and highly specialized field of medicine. This question and answer guide explores the problems frequently encountered by eyelid plastic surgeons in an easy to understand format. Multiple topics including cosmetic eyelid surgery (eyelid lift), growths of the eyelid (are they benign or cancerous?), tearing disorders, and thyroid associated eye disease are some of the topics discussed. This eyelid plastic surgery guide will allow anyone who suffers from an eyelid related problem to better understand their condition. In addition there is an extensive discussion on how to treat wrinkles around the eye. Eye Plastic Surgeons are trained initially as eye surgeons and then plastic surgeons. Therefore they are uniquely qualified to operate on the fine tissues of the eyelid and understand the eye anatomy. Who better to perform eyelid plastic surgery than an eye surgeon trained in plastic surgery? Part of maintaining healthy eyelid tissue is a healthy lifestyle. Anything you can do to maintain your overall general health has to be good for your eyes. In this book, Dr. Kristan also explores his common sense approach to achieving balance in your life through traditional and non-traditional means.

Cryopreserved allograft tissues are now standard materials for the reconstructive cardiac surgeon. Since publication of the first edition ("Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Valves") in 1989, the field has progressed dramatically with increased clinical use of cardiovascular allograft tissues, with the development of new surgical techniques, and with advances in the understanding of the fundamentals of valve transplantation biology and cryopreservation. As a result, over two-thirds of the present volume represents new material. Fifty-six authors bring their expertise to thirteen comprehensive, lavishly illustrated sections which discuss the principles of the use of homograft valves, major clinical series of homograft valves for both left and right ventricular outflow tracts, cryopreserved allograft tissue for cardiac reconstruction, cell biology of heart valve leaflets, cryobiology of heart valve preservation, morphological, biochemical, and explant pathology studies of allograft heart valves, allograft valve banking, as well as detailed explanation of surgical techniques for valve and root methods for left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions, the Ross operation and variants, and complex reconstructions. A final section presents potential future directions for the field. Over 400 illustrations, created expressly for this book, depict the surgical techniques from the perspective of the surgeon standing at the operating table. All surgeons performing pediatric and/or adult valve replacements and reconstructive cardiac surgeries will benefit from the described methods. Cardiothoracic residents and cardiologists will also find the text useful. It will provide the surgeon with an enhanced understanding of the biological and material properties of allografts and increased familiarity with the range of surgical techniques applicable for the use of these valves, particularly in the successful management of challenging cardiac reconstructions.> |
