Emotional Labour in Health Care - The unmanaged heart of nursing (Hardcover): Catherine Theodosius Emotional Labour in Health Care - The unmanaged heart of nursing (Hardcover)
Catherine Theodosius
R4,509 Discovery Miles 45 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Do nurses still care? In today's inflexible, fast-paced and more accountable workplace where biomedical and clinical models dominate health care practice, is there room for emotional labour? Based on original empirical research, this book delves into personal accounts of nurses' emotion expressions and experiences as they emerge from everyday nursing practice, and illustrates how their emotional labour is adapting in response to a constantly changing work environment. The book begins by re-examining Arlie Hochschild's sociological notion of emotional labour, and combines it with Margaret Archer's understanding of emotion and the inner dialogue. In an exploration of the nature of emotional labour, its historical and political context, and providing original, but easily recognisable, typology, Catherine Theodosius emphasises that it is emotion - complex, messy and opaque - that drives emotional labour within health care. She suggests that rather than being marginalised, emotional labour in nursing is frequently found in places that are hidden or unrecognised. By understanding emotion itself, which is fundamentally interactive and communicative, she argues that emotional labour is intrinsically linked to personal and social identity. The suggestion is made that the nursing profession has a responsibility to include emotional labour within personal and professional development strategies to ensure the care needs of the vulnerable are met. This innovative volume will be of interest to nursing, health care and sociology students, researchers and professionals.

All This Hell - U.S. Nurses Imprisoned by the Japanese (Paperback, New edition): Evelyn M. Monahan, Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee All This Hell - U.S. Nurses Imprisoned by the Japanese (Paperback, New edition)
Evelyn M. Monahan, Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee
R749 Discovery Miles 7 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

""Even though women were not supposed to be on the front lines, on the front lines we were. Women were not supposed to be interned either, but it happened to us. People should know what we endured. People should know what we can endure."" -- Lt. Col. Madeline Ullom More than one hundred U.S. Army and Navy nurses were stationed in Guam and the Philippines at the beginning of World War II. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, five navy nurses on Guam became the first American military women of World War II to be taken prisoner by the Japanese. More than seventy army nurses survived five months of combat conditions in the jungles of Bataan and Corregidor before being captured, only to endure more than three years in prison camps. When freedom came, the U.S. military ordered the nurses to sign agreements with the government not to discuss their horrific experiences. Evelyn Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have conducted numerous interviews with survivors and scoured archives for letters, diaries, and journals to uncover the heroism and sacrifices of these brave women.

Ethics, Law and Nursing (Paperback): Nina Fletcher Ethics, Law and Nursing (Paperback)
Nina Fletcher
R761 Discovery Miles 7 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An introduction to the ethical and legal dilemmas in nursing practice, this text is designed to provoke the nurse to reflect on the nature of his or her professional obligations and future practice. The authors firstly familiarise the reader with the basic principles of ethical debate and the overall structure of the legal system as it effects nurses. They then address the fundamental dilemmas of nursing practice, such as whether or not paternalism can ever be justified, if patients have the right to die, and what a nurse's response should be to poor professional practice by colleagues. The book aims to enhance the reader's understanding of the issues, and to educate nurses to develop their own skills of reasoning and judgement. -- .

A History of Apprenticeship Nurse Training in Ireland (Hardcover): Gerard Fealy A History of Apprenticeship Nurse Training in Ireland (Hardcover)
Gerard Fealy
R4,778 Discovery Miles 47 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Ireland, as in many other countries, the education and training of nurses is undergoing reform and what was a vocation is becoming a profession." A History of Apprenticeship Nurse Training in Ireland" traces the progress of nurse education, presenting a new authoritative and scholarly account of the history of the traditional system of training in Ireland.
Introduced as part of the reforms of hospital nursing in the late nineteenth century, apprenticeship nurse training was a vocational extension of secondary education. It resided outside the mainstream of higher educational provision and provided nurses with the knowledge and technical skills for sick nursing. It also functioned to socialize them into the role of hospital worker and to inculcate in them nursing's value systems. This system of training provided a ready supply of skilled, efficient, inexpensive and loyal workers. Gerard M. Fealy exposes social, cultural, political and economic factors that have influenced this provision and reform of nurse training, and demonstrates how these factors have shaped modern nursing in Ireland. He critically examines current historiography, bringing the hidden role of nurses and nursing to the fore.
Based on extensive primary sources, this in-depth study is essential reading for scholars and students of nursing history and Irish social history.

Nursing as an Aesthetic Praxis (Hardcover): Marina Tucakovic Nursing as an Aesthetic Praxis (Hardcover)
Marina Tucakovic
R1,148 Discovery Miles 11 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nursing as an Aesthetic Praxis is a work into how we be, approached through narratives of nursing. As an inquiry it is both phenomenological and metaphysical as they relate to being. Being is unfolded as a process by which and through which we create and recreate ourselves for the purpose of consciously knowing that which we already are. Dis-ease is positioned as one result of how we be in this process, that as an act of ongoing creation can be recreated. To come to this place of knowing is to begin to know Love. In this way, Nursing as an Aesthetic Praxis is really a love story, a story about a way to love that when known by nurses will enable nursing to be an art of healing.

How many of your psychiatric patients have a history of severe physical or psychological abuse or other psychological trauma? These patients often present diagnostic dilemmas, get a variety of diagnoses, and frequently prove difficult-to-treat. They may have syndromes that are reminiscent of the post-traumatic sequelae in adults, such as physiological hyperactivity, a sense of loss of control, passivity alternating with uncontrolled violence, and sleep disturbances including nightmares. Investigating the impact of the traumatic event in connection with the development of the disorder is essential to an effective treatment approach. Psychological Trauma provides a basis for understanding human response to trauma. The consequences of specific traumas have usually been described as separate entities. This is the first book to examine human response to trauma as a whole. In this thorough study of the biologic, psychodynamic and social consequences of trauma, separate chapters explore: • The impact of separation from the parental figure on a child's development, including cognitive and neurological disturbances • The psychobiology of traumatic response • Traumatic antecedents of borderline personality disorder • The effect of trauma on the family unit • Amnesia and dissociation as response to trauma • A stress management approach that can be incorporated into the treatment of patients

Narratives of Recovery from Mental Illness - The role of peer support (Paperback): Mike Watts, Agnes Higgins Narratives of Recovery from Mental Illness - The role of peer support (Paperback)
Mike Watts, Agnes Higgins
R1,261 Discovery Miles 12 610 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Narratives of Recovery from Mental Illness presents research that challenges the prevailing view that recovery from 'mental illness' must take place within the boundaries of traditional mental health services. While Watts and Higgins accept that medical treatment may be a vital start to some people's recovery, they argue that mental health problems can also be resolved through everyday social interactions, and through peer and community support. Using a narrative approach, this book presents detailed recovery stories of 26 people who received various diagnoses of 'mental illness' and were involved in a mutual help group known as 'GROW'. Drawing on an in-depth analysis of each story, chapters offer new understandings of the journey into mental distress and a progressive entrapment through a combination of events, feelings, thoughts and relationships. The book also discusses the process of ongoing personal liberation and healing which assists recovery, and suggests that friendship, social involvement, compassion, and nurturing processes of change all play key factors in improved mental well-being. This book provides an alternative way of looking at 'mental illness' and demonstrates many unexplored avenues and paths to recovery that need to be considered. As such, it will be of interest to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work and occupational therapy, as well as to service providers, policymakers and peer support organisations. The narratives of recovery within the book should also be a source of hope to people struggling with 'mental illness' and emotional distress
