Art interprets the visible world. Physics charts its unseen workings. The two realms seem completely opposed. But consider that both strive to reveal truths for which there are no words--with physicists using the language of mathematics and artists using visual images. In Art & Physics, Leonard Shlain tracks their breakthroughs side by side throughout history to reveal an astonishing correlation of visions. From the classical Greek sculptors to Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, and from Aristotle to Einstein, artists have foreshadowed the discoveries of scientists, such as when Monet and Cezanne intuited the coming upheaval in physics that Einstein would initiate. In this lively and colorful narrative, Leonard Shlain explores how artistic breakthroughs could have prefigured the visionary insights of physicists on so many occasions throughout history. Provicative and original, Art & Physics is a seamless integration of the romance of art and the drama of science--and an exhilarating history of ideas.
describes more than thirty Physics practicals at high school and undergraduate level. There's background information on each one, a description of the equipment needed, and how the experiment is performed. Uniquely, for those without access to a real laboratory, the book gives you access to highly detailed 3d simulations of all the experiments.
Energy is typically regarded as understandable, despite its multiple forms of storage and transfer. Entropy, however, is an enigma, in part because of the common view that it represents disorder. That view is flawed and hides entropy's connection with energy. In fact, macroscopic matter stores internal energy, and that matter's entropy is determined by how the energy is stored. Energy and entropy are intimately linked. Energy and Entropy: A Dynamic Duo illuminates connections between energy and entropy for students, teachers, and researchers. Conceptual understanding is emphasised where possible through examples, analogies, figures, and key points. Features: Qualitative demonstration that entropy is linked to spatial and temporal energy spreading, with equilibrium corresponding to the most equitable distribution of energy, which corresponds to maximum entropy Analysis of energy and entropy of matter and photons, with examples ranging from rubber bands, cryogenic cooling, and incandescent lamps to Hawking radiation of black holes Unique coverage of numerical entropy, the 3rd law of thermodynamics, entropic force, dimensionless entropy, free energy, and fluctuations, from Maxwell's demon to Brownian ratchets, plus attempts to violate the second law of thermodynamics
This book examines the intersection of Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) and Industrial and Organizational Psychology (I/O Psychology). It argues that, whilst OBM and I/O Psychology have developed simultaneously, they have done so with minimal integration. I/O Psychology, a somewhat older field, has evolved to become widely accepted, both influencing management and social sciences and being affected by them. It can be viewed as a research-oriented subject that is closely aligned with human resources functions. With regards to the intersection of I/O Psychology with OBM, some practices are more closely related than others; and of those that are related, some are relatively consistent with OBM practices, while others are very inconsistent. Most I/O Psychology interventions focus on many people simultaneously, seeking to ensure that one intervention affects multiple employees as a cost-efficient way to improve organizations, while OBM is usually better than I/O Psychology at improving the behaviors of individuals and smaller groups or workers. This book provides a framework for understanding differences and similarities between I/O Psychology and OBM, and as such is an innovative compendium for students, scholars, applied psychologists, and human resource specialists. It was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management.

'Once you start reading this utterly fascinating book it is nigh impossible to put it down ... This is a gem' Dame Evelyn Glennie Vic Tandy was a level-headed scientist, but there was no denying it: at this late hour in his lonely lab at Coventry University, he kept seeing a grey apparition out of the corner of his eye. Bathed in a cold sweat, his heart pounding in his chest, he questioned his own rational mind - could this really be a supernatural encounter? What on Earth could be sending such an eerie shudder through his body? Strange frequencies are all around us - in fact, there may be no limit to the marvellous power of vibration. So catch a wave with musical adventurer Richard Mainwaring and take a wild ride across the keys of his infinite piano. Along the way, you'll join the quest for the world's loneliest whale, whose tragically out-of-tune song has haunted oceanographers for decades. You'll discover what strange melodies are hidden in rats' whiskers and rainbows. And you'll find out how vibrations good and bad govern more or less everything around you.

Many types of engineering structures exhibit nonlinear behavior
under real operating conditions. Sometimes the unpredicted
nonlinear behavior of a system results in catastrophic failure. In
civil engineering, grandstands at sporting events and concerts may
be prone to nonlinear oscillations due to looseness of joints,
friction, and crowd movements. In the aerospace industry, nonlinear
motions may have serious implications for fatigue life. In the
automotive industry, examples include brake sequel and undesirable
engine mounting oscillations. Engineers of all types encounter
nonlinear behavior in a system at some time in their working lives
and should be able to recognize it.
As the race to build the world's first quantum computer is coming to an end, the race to build the quantum internet has just started. This book leverages the author's unique insights into both the Chinese and American quantum programs. It begins with the physics and history of the quantum internet and ends with the latest results in quantum computing and quantum networks. The Chinese quantum Sputnik moment. The U.S. National Quantum Initiative. What's up with Quantum Computing Supremacy? The Race to Build the Quantum Internet. Where will Quantum Technology be Tomorrow? Written by a renowned quantum physicist, this book is for everyone who is interested in the rapidly advancing field of Quantum Technology - The Second Quantum Revolution. The 2016 launch of the Chinese quantum satellite Mozi was a quantum Sputnik moment. The United States went from thinking it was ten years ahead of the Chinese to the realization that it was ten years behind them. This quantum gap led to the U.S. National Quantum Initiative, launched in 2018. Since then, the race to build the quantum internet has taken off at breakneck speed.
An extensive collection of problems in physics suitable for self-study, tutorial and group work at the level of an undergraduate course. The authors have created a set of problems drawing together the core elements of a physics degree. In order to solve these problems, the reader is led to develop conceptual insight and to reinforce his or her existing knowledge of basic theory and standard mathematical techniques. The aim of the book is to provide students with the problem-solving skills needed for "general physics" examinations and for real-life situations encountered by the professional physicist. The book is divided into three sections. The first contains problems arranged into short groups or "tutorials" that are suitable for both group discussion and individual study. The second section provides detailed answers to these tutorials. The final section presents some further problems but without solutions.
