Kinetic Control in Synthesis and Self-Assembly provides a unique overview of the fundamental principles, novel methods and practical applications for researchers across organic synthesis, supramolecular chemistry and materials sciences. The book examines naturally occurring molecular systems in which kinetic processes are more ubiquitous than thermodynamic processes, also exploring the control of reactions and molecular self-assemblies, through kinetic processes, in artificial systems. These methods currently play a crucial role for tuning materials functions. From organic synthesis, to supramolecular assemblies, and from restricted spaces, to material synthesis for hierarchical structures, the book offers valuable coverage for researchers across disciplines. Interesting topics include how to regulate kinetic pathways more precisely, essential molecular design for kinetic traps, and how molecular environments surrounding molecules (i.e., solvent, temperature, and pressure effects) influence kinetic control in reactions and self-assemblies.

Alkyne-Based Nanostructures on Silver Substrates (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Raphael Hellwig Alkyne-Based Nanostructures on Silver Substrates (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Raphael Hellwig
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Acetylenic precursors are important reactants for creating carbon-based architectures via linkage reactions. While their capability of forming intermolecular bonds is well investigated in solution, very few systematic studies have been carried out to create alkyne-based nanostructures on metal substrates under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Synthesizing extended and regular carbon scaffolds requires a detailed knowledge of alkyne chemistry in order to control reaction pathways and limit unwanted side reactions. Using the bottom-up approach on metal surfaces, the authors establish protocols to fabricate regular architectures built up by the on-surface formation of selective organometallic and C-C bonds with thoughtfully designed alkyne-functionalized monomers. The structural and functional properties of the resulting organometallic and covalent nanostructures are characterized by means of scanning tunneling microscopy. The results open up new perspectives in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis and the on-surface synthesis of functional interfaces under mild reaction conditions.

Bioorganic Synthesis - An Introduction (Hardcover): Gary W. Morrow Bioorganic Synthesis - An Introduction (Hardcover)
Gary W. Morrow
R3,439 Discovery Miles 34 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last three decades, the interface between chemistry and biology has grown increasingly dynamic, resulting in the rapid expansion of communication and collaboration amongst research scientists, faculty and students in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, bioengineering, and beyond. This is due in part to society's growing demand for scientists, engineers and practitioners who can bring a more interdisciplinary approach to their work. For this reason, new elective courses at the undergraduate level that address topics crossing the traditional boundaries of chemistry and biology are increasingly necessary, as are courses that can provide traditional chemistry students with additional insight into the fundamental role that chemistry plays in the function and evolution of biological systems. Morrow's book builds on the foundation of a one-year introductory course in organic chemistry, focusing on familiar organic chemical processes associated with the biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites, with special emphasis on the latter group. Ultimately, it brings to undergraduate science majors the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of fundamental mechanistic organic chemistry within a meaningful biological context that goes far beyond the usual boxed essays or supplemental problems that increasingly crowd the margins of many introductory organic chemistry textbooks. The book offers ideal support for courses in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pre-medicine and bioengineering programs.

Graeme Moad, D.H. Solomon
R2,963 Discovery Miles 29 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the ten years since the first edition appeared the "renaissance" in Free Radical Polymerization has continued and gained momentum.
In this second revised edition, the authors critically evaluate the findings of the last decade, where necessary reinterpreting earlier work in the light of these ideas, and point to the areas where current and future research is being directed. The overall aim is to provide a framework for further extending our understanding of free radical polymerization and create a definable link between synthesis conditions and polymer structure and properties.
The authors have updated all chapters, and added many new references and two new chapters to reflect the significant advances made in radical polymerization. One new chapter has been devoted to
the area of living radical polymerization which is now responsible for a very substantial fraction of the papers in the field.
In addition to offering polymers with unique compositions and properties not achievable with other methodologies, living radical polymerization has also been combined with other
processes and mechanisms to give structures and architectures that were not previously thought possible.
The developments are seen to have great application particularly in the emerging areas of electronics, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

U. H. Brinker
R7,599 Discovery Miles 75 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our understanding of carbene chemistry has advanced dramatically, especially in the last decade, and new developments continue to emerge. Some of the recent exciting findings have been collected in the first and second volumes of ""Advances in Carbene Chemistry"." With the third volume, the series continues to provide a periodic coverage of carbene chemistry in its broadest sense.
Beginning as chemical curiosities, carbenes are now solidly established as reactive intermediates with fascinating and productive research areas of their own. Five decades of divalent carbon chemistry have provided us with a vast repertoire of new, unusual, and surprising reactions. Some of those reactions, once classified as exotic, have become standard methods in organic synthesis. These highly reactive carbene species have been harnessed and put to work to achieve difficult synthetic tasks other reactive intermediates cannot easily perform.
The fruitful relationship between experiment and theory has pushed carbene chemistry further toward the direction of reaction control; that is, regio- and stereoselectivity in intra- and intermolecular addition and insertion reactions. The interplay between experiment and modern spectroscopy has led to the characterization of many carbenes that are crucial to both an understanding and further development of this field.
