Amino Acid Fermentation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Atsushi Yokota, Masato Ikeda Amino Acid Fermentation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Atsushi Yokota, Masato Ikeda
R11,015 Discovery Miles 110 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents the latest findings on amino acid fermentation and reviews the 50-year history of their development. The book is divided into four parts, the first of which presents a review of amino acid fermentation, past and present. The second part highlights selected examples of amino acid fermentation in more detail, while the third focuses on recent advanced technologies. The last part introduces readers to several topics for future research directions in amino acid production systems. A new field, "amino acid fermentation", was created by the progress of academic research and industrial development. In 1908, the Japanese researcher Kikunae Ikeda discovered glutamate as an Umami substance. Then a new seasoning, MSG (monosodium glutamate), was commercialized. Although glutamate was extracted from the hydro-lysate of wheat or soybean in the early days, a new production method was subsequently invented - "fermentation" - in which glutamate is produced from sugars such as glucose by a certain bacterium called Corynebacterium. The topic of this volume is particularly connected in a significant way with biochemical, biotechnological, and microbial fields. Both professionals in industry and an academic audience will understand the importance of this volume.

Engineering of Halogenases towards Synthetic Applications - Increasing the Thermostability and Investigations on a Marine... Engineering of Halogenases towards Synthetic Applications - Increasing the Thermostability and Investigations on a Marine Brominase Bmp5 (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Hannah Minges
R1,833 Discovery Miles 18 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hannah Minges focuses on the investigation of two different FAD-dependent halogenases in order to analyze and improve their applicability for chemoenzymatic approaches in chemistry. Owing to beneficial features, like high selectivity and benign reaction conditions, nature's toolkit for halogenation provides several advantages, whereas conventional chemical strategies require hazardous reagents and suffer from low selectivity. Therefore, enzymatic halogenation arises as promising alternative in the synthesis of valuable chemicals. One project focuses on the generation of a thermostable variant of the tryptophan halogenase Thal by means of directed evolution. The second project deals with the investigation of the marine halogenase Bmp5. This enzyme is of synthetic interest because it preferably introduces bromine into phenol compounds, whereas chlorination cannot take place.

The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Shu-ang Zhou
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This thesis describes lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) with exotic elastic and viscous properties. The first part of the thesis presents a thorough analysis of the elastic and viscous properties of LCLCs as functions of concentration, temperature and ionic contents, while the second part explores an active nematic system: living liquid crystals, which represent a combination of LCLC and living bacteria. LCLCs are an emerging class of liquid crystals that have shown profound connections to biological systems in two aspects. First, the assembly process of the chromonic aggregates is essentially the same as DNA oligomers and other super-molecular assemblies of biological origin. LCLCs thus provide an excellent model system for studying physical properties such as the elasticity and viscosity of these supramolecular assemblies. Second, LCLCs are biocompatible, thus serving as a unique anisotropic matrix to interface with living systems such as bacteria. This thesis deepens our understanding of both aspects. The noncovalent nature of chromonic aggregation produces the unique viscoelasticity to be found in LCLCs, which differs dramatically from that of traditional LCs. Anisotropic interactions between LCLCs and bacteria lead to fascinating phenomena such as the deformation of LCLCs with a characteristic wavelength determined by the elasticity of the LCLCs and the activity of the bacteria, orientationally controlled trajectories of bacteria and visualization of 24 nm flagella motion.

Dynamic Chemical Processes on Solid Surfaces - Chemical Reactions and Catalysis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Kenichi Tanaka Dynamic Chemical Processes on Solid Surfaces - Chemical Reactions and Catalysis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Kenichi Tanaka
R4,287 Discovery Miles 42 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, the author determines that a surface is itself a new material for chemical reaction, and the reaction of the surface provides additional new materials on that surface. The revelation of that peculiarity is what makes this book different from an ordinary textbook, and this new point of view will help to provide a new impetus when graduate students and researchers consider their results. The reaction of surface atoms provides additional new compounds, but these compounds cannot be detached from the surface. Some compounds are passive, but others work as catalysts. One superior feature of the surface is the dynamic cooperation of two or more different functional materials or sites on the same surface. This fact has been well established in the preferential oxidation of CO on platinum supported on a carbon nanotube with Ni-MgO at its terminal end. The Pt and Ni-MgO are perfectly separated, but these two are indispensable for the selective oxidation of CO in H2, where the H2O molecule plays a key role. The reader will understand that the complexity of catalysis is due to the complexity of the dynamic processes on the surface.

The first contribution describes apolar and polar molecular fossils and, in particular biomarkers, along the lines usually followed in organic chemistry textbooks, and points to their bioprecursors when available. Thus, the apolar compounds are divided in linear and branched alkanes followed by alicyclic compounds and aromatic and heterocyclic molecules, and, in particular, the geoporphyrins. The polar molecular fossils contain as functional groups or constituent units ethers, alcohols, phenols, carbonyl groups, flavonoids, quinones, and acids, or are polymers like kerogen, amber, melanin, proteins, or nucleic acids. The final sections discuss the methodology used and the fundamental processes encountered by the biomolecules described, including diagenesis, catagenesis, and metagenesis. The second contribution covers the distribution of phthalides in nature and the findings in the structural diversity, chemical reactivity, biotransformations, syntheses, and bioactivity of natural and semisynthetic phthalides.

New Strategies for N-Heterocyclic Carbenes Catalyzed Annulations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Xiangyu Chen New Strategies for N-Heterocyclic Carbenes Catalyzed Annulations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Xiangyu Chen
R3,577 Discovery Miles 35 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This thesis focuses on NHC-catalyzed annulation of nitroalkenes, enals and , -unsaturated carboxylic acids. (1) NHCs were found to be efficient catalysts for the [4+2] annulation of -substituted nitroalkenes. The scope of Rauhut-Currier reaction was successfully extended to the most challenging -substituted alkenes by this method; (2) Enals were successfully used for [4+2] annulations with azodicarboxylates catalyzed by NHC via -addition. Highly enantiopure tetrahydropyridazinones and -amino acid derivatives could be easily prepared by subsequent transformations of the resulting dihydropyridazinones. (4) The readily available , -unsaturated carboxylic acids were first successfully employed to generate the , -unsaturated acyl azolium intermediates by using NHC for the enantioselective [3+2] and [3+3] annulations.

Incorporation of Heterocycles into Combinatorial Chemistry (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): Eugene V. Babaev Incorporation of Heterocycles into Combinatorial Chemistry (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Eugene V. Babaev
R1,910 Discovery Miles 19 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The author has summarized a decade of teaching combinatorial chemistry into this timely brief. The solid phase synthesis of unnatural heterocyclic alpha-amino acids is illustrated by practical examples starting from the ABCs of peptide synthesis explored in chapter one. Chapter two is concerned with the solid phase synthesis which is shown on various techniques - BillBoard, tea-bag, and Lantern devices, and demonstrated on heterocyclic examples and protocols. In the third chapter the tools for accelerating chemical synthesis - solid phase and liquid phase - are reviewed. Here the techniques of parallel refluxing (including microwave and flow technique) and parallel separation (filtration, centrifugation, evaporation, and chromatography) are described. In the chapters 4 and 5 the author goes on to describe how the liquid phase synthesis of heterocycles (reductive amination and Ugi reaction of heterocycles) is illustrated with the use of semi-automated protocols. Finally, the design of combinatorial libraries of heterocycles is reviewed including the original author's findings.
