This thesis presents a general approach to accessing nitrogen-substituted hetero- and carbocycles. In short, the annulation reactions developed in the thesis make it possible to access nitrogen-substituted four-, five- and six-membered rings, all essential building blocks for the synthesis of bioactive molecules. Many natural products display a saturated polycyclic core allowing a well-defined arrangement of functional groups in space. As such, they can interact with biological targets with a high degree of affinity and selectivity, surpassing many synthetic drugs. Nevertheless, the efficient synthesis of such complex ring systems poses a challenge for organic chemistry. Through careful tuning of the electronic properties of a nitrogen donor group and a diester acceptor group, the first [3+2] annulation reaction between aminocyclopropanes and enol ethers or carbonyl compounds is now possible. The reaction proceeded under mild catalytic conditions, and the building blocks obtained can be found at the core of bioactive alkaloids, drugs such as Ramipril and biomolecules such as DNA and RNA. Thanks to the dynamic kinetic asymmetric annulation of aminocyclopropanes with enol ethers and aldehydes, access to enantioenriched compounds is also now possible. Lastly, a synthesis of donor-acceptor aminocyclobutanes via [2+2] cycloaddition using a cheap iron catalyst was developed, allowing them to be used in [4+2] annulations to access cyclohexylamines.

Advanced Nanotechnology and Application of Supercritical Fluids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Inam Uddin, Abdullah M. Asiri Advanced Nanotechnology and Application of Supercritical Fluids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Inam Uddin, Abdullah M. Asiri
R4,636 Discovery Miles 46 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globalization and industrialization involve a number of reactions, products, extractions, and separations that require the use of organic solvents. These solvents are responsible for a number of ecological concerns, including atmospheric and land toxicity. Conventional organic solvents are regarded as volatile organic compounds; some are even limited due to their potential for ozone layer depletion. While supercritical liquids exhibit physical properties that could make them ideal substitutes for these volatile compounds, there is particular interest in the use of carbon dioxide as a solvent of crude material. In particular, carbon dioxide has apparent 'green' properties, like its noncombustible nature, the fact that it is generally nonpoisonous, and its relative inertness. Thus, the use of supercritical carbon dioxide can provide practical improvements to the sustainability of industrial products and processes. This book provides in-depth literature in the area of industrial green processes, focusing on the separation, purification, and extraction of compounds utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide as a green solvent.

Ya-Ping Sun
R4,244 Discovery Miles 42 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Written by the founder of the field of carbon "quantum" dots (carbon dots) and related technology, this book outlines the principles of carbon dots and presents strong evidence for that small carbon nanoparticles and by extension carbon dots represent the nanoscale carbon allotrope at zero-dimension. Historical accounts of the inception and evolution of the carbon dots field are provided. Experimental approaches and techniques for the dot synthesis and some related major issues are discussed in detail. The photoexcited state properties, especially the bright and colorful photoluminescence emissions, and photoinduced redox characteristics of carbon dots are presented, and so are their advantages over semiconductor quantum dots as well as fullerenes. Carbon dots are also compared with "graphene quantum dots", for which a unified mechanistic understanding is proposed. Finally, a broad range of applications of carbon dots and their derived hybrid nanostructures in biomedical, renewable energy, food and environmental safety, and other technologies are highlighted. The book concludes with a discussion on the excellent potential and opportunities for further research and development.

Social Drivers In Food Technology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Vivian-Lara Silva Social Drivers In Food Technology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Vivian-Lara Silva
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This unique and timely text is designed to help food science students learn to perform critical analysis of food processing technology and consider the incorporation of elements that touch on contemporary technological developments in the food sector. As the food industry adjusts to new consumer demands for safe and low processed foods, the time has come to harmonize product and process engineering with 'relationship engineering' from farm to fork. This increasingly allows the opportunity for food sector professionals to consider the existence of new drivers of food consumption. These newly discovered drivers are explored in great detail over the course of this book from industrial, economic and human resource viewpoints. Social Drivers In Food Technology presents a series of helpful case studies are presented covering six important food sectors: chocolate, coffee, yogurt, juice, baby food and snacks. These cases have been chosen in order to illustrate dynamic and innovative advances in food processing technology. The information provided over the course of this book has been gained through the thorough study of both scientific literature and organizational reports from food processing companies. The major economic aspects related to food technology are also outlined throughout the text. This multidisciplinary approach is motivated by the opportunity to contextualize the technological debate in strategy and organizational economics, contributing to the formation of human resources. This text is informed by the concept that one must look beyond the technology of the food processing sector and discuss opportunities that involve re-thinking product innovation and process, knowledge generation and human resource training. These innovations have been highlighted in food science & technology literature, but their economic and managerial implications have remained unexplored until now. With its informative case studies, helpful illustrations and quizzes and comprehensive, well-organized scope, Social Drivers In Food Technology is a much-needed textbook that will allow students to look at food processing technology from both industrial and economic perspectives and to consider the important human resource elements involved.
