Clinical Exercise Physiology, Fifth Edition With HKPropel Access,
is a comprehensive guide to the clinical aspects of exercise
physiology, investigating 24 chronic diseases and conditions and
addressing a variety of populations. The text has been a mainstay
in the field since its inception in 2003 and is an ideal resource
for students preparing for clinical exercise certifications,
including those offered by the American College of Sports Medicine
(ACSM-CEP), American Council on Exercise (Medical Exercise
Specialist), Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP-CEP),
and Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA-AEP). Clinical
Exercise Physiology, Fifth Edition, employs a logical progression
of content to provide greater coverage and depth of diseases than
is typically found in most clinical exercise physiology textbooks.
It examines the effects of exercise on 24 chronic conditions, with
each chapter covering the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical
considerations, drug and surgical therapies, and exercise testing
and prescription issues for the chronic condition. Other chapters
are devoted to examining exercise-related issues for four special
populations. Each chapter in this fifth edition is revised and
updated to include the latest research, clinical guidelines, and
position statements from professional organizations. In addition,
it incorporates the following new elements: An upgrade to a
full-color layout, for a more engaging learning experience and
enhanced presentation of data New Clinical Exercise Bottom Line
sidebars that highlight key information a clinical exercise
physiologist needs when working with clinical populations A new
chapter on clinical exercise programming that offers detailed
recommendations for clinical populations A completely rewritten
chapter on spinal cord injury and updates throughout each chapter
to reflect the most up-to-date guidelines and position statements
Expanded coverage of clinical exercise physiology certification
options In addition to practical application sidebars throughout
the text, the fifth edition also has related online tools to
support student learning. Delivered through HKPropel, more than 60
case studies are presented in a SOAP note format so students can
explore clinical evaluations, looking closely at subjective and
objective data, assessments, and plans. Discussion questions and
interactive key term flash cards foster better understanding and
retention, while chapter quizzes can be assigned by instructors
through the platform to assess student comprehension. Endorsed by
the Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA), the Canadian
Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), the British Association of
Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), and Exercise & Sports
Science Australia (ESSA), Clinical Exercise Physiology, Fifth
Edition, offers a contemporary review of the variety of diseases
and conditions that students and professionals may encounter in the
field. New and veteran clinical exercise physiologists, as well as
those preparing for clinical exercise certification exams, will
appreciate the in-depth coverage of the clinical populations that
benefit from physical activity. Note: A code for accessing HKPropel
is included with this ebook.
Is human nature something that the natural and social sciences aim
to describe, or is it a pernicious fiction? What role, if any, does
'human nature' play in directing and informing scientific work? Can
we talk about human nature without invoking-either implicitly or
explicitly-a contrast with human culture? It might be tempting to
think that the respectability of 'human nature' is an issue that
divides natural and social scientists along disciplinary
boundaries, but the truth is more complex. The contributors to this
collection take very different stances with regard to the idea of
human nature. They come from the fields of psychology, the
philosophy of science, social and biological anthropology,
evolutionary theory, and the study of animal cognition. Some of
them are 'human nature' enthusiasts, some are sceptics, and some
say that human nature is a concept with many faces, each of which
plays a role in its own investigative niche. Some want to eliminate
the notion altogether, some think it unproblematic, others want to
retain it with reforming modifications. Some say that human nature
is a target for investigation that the human sciences cannot do
without, others argue that the term does far more harm than good.
The diverse perspectives articulated in this book help to explain
why we disagree about human nature, and what, if anything, might
resolve that disagreement.
mellitus, Myokardhypertrophie, Herzinsuffizienz, arterielle

An award-winning physician and scientist makes the game-changing
case that genetic females are stronger than males at every stage of
life 'A powerful antidote to the myth of a "weaker sex"' Gina
Rippon, author of The Gendered Brain From birth, genetic females
are better at fighting viruses, infections and cancer. They do
better at surviving epidemics and famines. They live longer, and
even see the world in a wider variety of colours. These are the
facts; they are simply stronger than men at every stage of life.
Why? And why are we taught the opposite? Drawing on his
wide-ranging experience and cutting-edge research as a medic,
geneticist and specialist in rare diseases, Dr Sharon Moalem
reveals how the answer lies in our genetics: the female's double XX
chromosomes offer a powerful survival advantage. And he calls for a
long-overdue reconsideration of our one-size-fits-all view of the
body and medicine - a view that still frames women through the lens
of men. Revolutionary, captivating and utterly persuasive, The
Better Half will make you see women, men and the survival of our
species anew. 'Brilliant, original and groundbreaking, highly
readable and genuinely useful' Daily Mail

aufzeigen.

Take a front row seat with Professor Luke O'Neill on a high-octane
year. Luke has become one of the most well-known and trusted voices
of Ireland's COVID-19 pandemic. A world-renowned immunologist, he
was thrust into the spotlight as we struggled to make sense of a
crisis that saw the country grind to a halt. In these compelling
diaries, Luke reveals what life was like behind the scenes as he
endeavoured to keep calm and trust that the science would save us.
Set against a national backdrop of banana-bread baking, TikTok
dancing and outdoor bingo, as well as the devastation to life and
livelihood suffered by many, Luke's lockdown diaries reveal the
highs and lows of work at the cutting edge of science in his
Trinity College lab along with how he coped personally with the
pressures of public life. Shot through with the natural positivity
and humour that have made Luke a home-grown hero, Keep Calm and
Trust the Science is an unputdownable account of one of the most
dramatic years in Irish history from one of its key players.

How do you carry on when things go deadly wrong? When Dr Rahul
Jandial operated on Karina, an eleven-year-old girl whose spinal
cord was splitting in two, he had to make an impossible decision.
He followed his head over his gut and Karina was left permanently
paralysed, altering both patient and surgeon's lives for ever. This
decision would haunt Rahul for decades, a constant reminder of the
fine line between saving and damaging a life. As one of the world's
leading brain surgeons, Rahul is the last hope for patients with
extreme forms of cancer. In treating them, he has observed humanity
at its most raw and most robust. He has journeyed to unimaginable
extremes with them, guiding them through the darkest moments of
their lives. Life on a Knife's Edge is Rahul's poetic and
beautifully written account of the resilience, courage and belief
he has witnessed in his patients, and the lessons about human
nature he has learned from them. It is about the impossible choices
he has to make, and the fateful consequences he is forced to live
with. From challenging the ethics of surgical practices, to helping
a patient with locked-in syndrome communicate her dying wish to her
family, Rahul shares his extraordinary experiences, revealing the
depths of a surgeon's psyche that is continuously pushed to its
limits.
This book introduces readers to the fascinating interaction of
specialized gamete cells, forming the early embryo and a blueprint
of new life. Readers will gain a thorough understanding of the
complex physiological events and mechanical processes - such as
ionic regulation, metabolism and intracellular signalling - to
decipher cause and effect in fertilization. Wide-ranging in its
approach, this book describes fertilization as a highly conserved
mechanism throughout the animal kingdom, taking case studies from
echinoderms, ascidians, amphibians and mammals through to other
phyla. An excellent companion to undergraduate and postgraduate
students of medicine, veterinary and biological sciences, this text
provides an underpinning of the mechanisms of fertilization that
inform assisted reproduction practice and research in medicine and
agriculture. It explores the detailed phases before fertilization:
the oocyte as a quiescent cell, attracting its partner gamete,
followed by a cascade of pre-determined physiological events, to
form the dynamic zygote cell; setting the scene for the early
embryo, and beyond.
The human genome contains about 25,000 protein-coding and noncoding
genes and many other functional elements, such as origins of
replication, regulatory elements, and centromeres. Functional
elements occupy only about 10% of the more than three billion base
pairs in the human genome. Much of the rest is composed of ancient
fragments of broken genes, transposons, and viruses. Almost all of
this is thought to be junk DNA, based on evidence that dates back
fifty years. This conclusion is controversial. What's in Your
Genome? describes the arguments on both sides of the debate and
attempts to explain the reasoning behind those different points of
view. The book aims to correct a number of false narratives that
have arisen in recent years and examine how they have affected the
debate over junk DNA. In addition, Laurence A. Moran focuses on
scientific misconceptions and misinformation and on how the junk
DNA controversy has been incorrectly portrayed in both the
scientific literature and the popular press. Tracing the earliest
indications of junk DNA back to the 1960s, the book explains the
success of Nearly-Neutral Theory and the importance of random
genetic drift, which gave rise to the view that evolution produces
sloppy genomes full of junk DNA. What's in Your Genome? aims to
offer the most accurate and current account of the human genome.
