This reference provides an in-depth discussion of the theory and application of lapped transforms (LTs). It explains how LTs can lead to a better complexity/performance trade-off than other transforms or filter bands used in signal processing. The text addresses the increased use LTs, especially with HDTV and how they may become the standard for high-quality audio coding.
This edited book presents the results of the 5th Workshop on Real-world Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN). The purpose of this workshopwas to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments of wireless sensor networks. Included were, nonetheless, emerging forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. Indeed, when working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new or unforeseen issues may arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; the performance of prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; whereas actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks; it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. The workshop collected the state of the art in emerging and current research trends dealing with Real-world Wireless Sensor Networks, with the aim of representing a stepping stone for future research in this field."

As an important future network architecture, virtual network architecture has received extensive attention. Virtual network embedding (VNE) is one of the core services of network virtualization (NV). It provides solutions for various network applications from the perspective of virtual network resource allocation. The Internet aims to provide global users with comprehensive coverage. The network function requests of hundreds of millions of end users have brought great pressure to the underlying network architecture. VNE algorithm can provide effective support for the reasonable and efficient allocation of network resources, so as to alleviate the pressure off the Internet. At present, a distinctive feature of the Internet environment is that the quality of service (QoS) requirements of users are differentiated. Different regions, different times, and different users have different network function requirements. Therefore, network resources need to be reasonably allocated according to users' QoS requirements to avoid the waste of network resources. In this book, based on the analysis of the principle of VNE algorithm, we provide a VNE scheme for users with differentiated QoS requirements. We summarize the common user requirements into four categories: security awareness, service awareness, energy awareness, and load balance, and then introduce the specific implementation methods of various differentiated QoS algorithms. This book provides a variety of VNE solutions, including VNE algorithms for single physical domain, VNE algorithms for across multiple physical domains, VNE algorithms based on heuristic method, and VNE algorithms based on machine learning method.
Over the years I have worked with or consulted for many managers throughout the world at all levels of industry and government. I have seen who succeeded, achieved goals, and made progress, and who failed or crashed. I have studied their methods of operation and their decision-making approach, as well as the range of people involved in the decision-making. I similarly personally managed large industrial and service organizations and their operations, and found that to succeed and have a content team of collaborators, decision-making had to be joint and delegated to the lowest competent and informed level. Using this approach not only improved the performance of the organization or firm, but also resulted in a more content, professional, cooperative, happy, and competent workforce. In general, people like to assume responsibility, particularly of functions with which they are intimately familiar. They enjoy the role of de- sion-maker and the use of their knowledge and experience in guiding their and related work. Delegation of decision-making not only infuses pride and conte- ment but also assures more informed, timely, and effective implementation of de- sions. It also adds to worker training and education as workers inquire, develop information and use of their own experience in improving their decision-making. Worker pride and feeling of control and involvement lead to contentment and s- isfaction which, in return, pays dividends in worker productivity, morale, retention, and resulting low turnover.

As other complex systems in social and natural sciences as well as in engineering, the Internet is hard to understand from a technical point of view. Packet switched networks defy analytical modeling. The Internet is an outstanding and challenging case because of its fast development, unparalleled heterogeneity and the inherent lack of measurement and monitoring mechanisms in its core conception. This monograph deals with applications of computational intelligence methods, with an emphasis on fuzzy techniques, to a number of current issues in measurement, analysis and control of traffic in the Internet. First, the core building blocks of Internet Science and other related networking aspects are introduced. Then, data mining and control problems are addressed. In the first class two issues are considered: predictive modeling of traffic load as well as summarization of traffic flow measurements. The second class, control, includes active queue management schemes for Internet routers as well as window based end-to-end rate and congestion control. The practical hardware implementation of some of the fuzzy inference systems proposed here is also addressed. While some theoretical developments are described, we favor extensive evaluation of models using real-world data by simulation and experiments.

This book tells the story of the scientific talent and technological prowess of two nations that joined forces to connect themselves with a communications cable that would change the world. In 1855 an American visionary named Cyrus West Field, who knew nothing about telegraphy, sought to establish a monopoly on telegraphic revenues between North America and Europe. Field and the wealthy New Yorkers who formed the first Atlantic cable-laying company never suspected that spanning the vast and stormy Atlantic would require 11 years of frustration and horrific financial sacrifice. The enterprise would eventually engage some of the most brilliant minds in England, Scotland, and the United States, attracting men of science, men of wealth, and men of curiosity. Message time would be cut from more than four weeks to about two minutes. Such a feat would not have been possible without the massive ship the Great Eastern, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Britain's foremost engineer, or the financial backing of Thomas Brassey, the era's greatest builder of railroads. Despite four failed attempts and the enmity that developed between the Union and Great Britain during America's Civil War, Field never stopped urging his British friends to perfect a cable that could function in water as deep as two and a half miles. Without the unified effort of this small cadre of determined engineers, decades may have passed before submarine cables became reliable. This is the story of these men, their ships, and the technology that made it all possible. Behind the scenes were tough and worthy competitors who tried to beat them to the punch, adding a sense of urgency to their monumental task. Some called theAtlantic cable the greatest feat of the 19th century--with good reason. It perfected transoceanic communications and connected the world with circuits in the sea.

Old Wires and New Waves- The History of the Telegraph, Telephone and Wireless By Alvin F. Harlow. Originally published in 1936. FOREWORD: THERE may be those who will think that a disproportionate amount of space is given in this book to the early history of the telegraph, as against the remarkable technical develop ments of the past quarter or half century. May it be suggested that the birth and infancy of ideas are intrinsically more note worthy, more important, than their middle age The centuries of groping for a method of quick communication, the one long century of mans striving to make electricity his servant, the pioneer days of the telegraph, when not only it but all America was simple and crude these are to most folk to-day so exotic, the last-named phase is to the student so significant a picture of the youth of American society and the nation, that, in the judgment of the author, they should be dealt with in detail for the benefit of a generation which knows them not. On the other hand, the rapid developments in telegraph, tele phone, and wireless in recent days are described at length in newspapers and magazines as they appear and they come so swiftly and we are so inured to them that the astounding inven tion of yesterday has to-day become a commonplace, and to morrow is superseded by something still more miraculous. It is therefore scarcely worth while for so slowly built and so final a publication as a book to attempt chronicling all the - minor de tails of recent progress in communication, especially since these matters become so complex and so abstruse that full explanation of their development and functioning would be too complicated for non-technically minded readers.Nevertheless, these modern developments have not been neglected, but are treated as fully as space limitations and the need for clarity seem to dictate. As usual, I have leaned heavily in my research upon the original documents and other materials in the collections of the New York Public Library and the New York Historical So ciety. The latters Henry ORielly Collection is one of the most valuable telegraph sources in existence. The great communications companies have all been very help ful. Through the good offices of Mr. William P. Banning, Assis tant Vice-President of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, I spent many hours in personally conducted tours through that companys three huge operating buildings in New York City, any one of which is worth a trip to New York to see I was overwhelmed with pamphlets, reports, documents, magazine articles, and books and any and all photographs I desired for illustrations were at my disposal. Mr. Langdon, the librarian Miss Winburg, keeper of the photographs Messrs. Fowler and Mills of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, Rood and Lea of the Long Lines Building Carl and Sedgwick of the New York Telephone Company, all gave their assistance with the courtesy characteristic of the organization. Mr. E. W. Goode, of the publicity department of the Inter national Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, supplied all the data at his command, loaned books not to be found elsewhere, procured permission for me to see the companys operating rooms, gave me whatever photographs I desired, and searched the country over for older ones which were not in his files. The Radio Corporation of America, through Messrs. Galvin, Wright, and Weaver, was also veryhelpful. I was conducted through its operating building and was supplied with photographs and technical information as needed...
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Brooks-Iyengar Distributed Sensing Algorithm, which brings together the power of Byzantine Agreement and sensor fusion in building a fault-tolerant distributed sensor network. The authors analyze its long-term impacts, advances, and future prospects. The book starts by discussing the Brooks-Iyengar algorithm, which has made significant impact since its initial publication in 1996. The authors show how the technique has been applied in many domains such as software reliability, distributed systems and OS development, etc. The book exemplifies how the algorithm has enhanced new real-time features by adding fault-tolerant capabilities for many applications. The authors posit that the Brooks-Iyengar Algorithm will to continue to be used where fault-tolerant solutions are needed in redundancy system scenarios. This book celebrates S.S. Iyengar's accomplishments that led to his 2019 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) Cybermatics Congress "Test of Time Award" for his work on creating Brooks-Iyengar Algorithm and its impact in advancing modern computing.
Over the past decades, fault diagnosis (FDI) and fault tolerant control strategies (FTC) have been proposed based on different techniques for linear and nonlinear systems. Indeed a considerable attention is deployed in order to cope with diverse damages resulting in faults occurrence.
This book presents the most important fault-tolerant distributed programming abstractions and their associated distributed algorithms, in particular in terms of reliable communication and agreement, which lie at the heart of nearly all distributed applications. These programming abstractions, distributed objects or services, allow software designers and programmers to cope with asynchrony and the most important types of failures such as process crashes, message losses, and malicious behaviors of computing entities, widely known under the term "Byzantine fault-tolerance". The author introduces these notions in an incremental manner, starting from a clear specification, followed by algorithms which are first described intuitively and then proved correct. The book also presents impossibility results in classic distributed computing models, along with strategies, mainly failure detectors and randomization, that allow us to enrich these models. In this sense, the book constitutes an introduction to the science of distributed computing, with applications in all domains of distributed systems, such as cloud computing and blockchains. Each chapter comes with exercises and bibliographic notes to help the reader approach, understand, and master the fascinating field of fault-tolerant distributed computing.
This book throws a lifeline to designers wading through mounds of antenna array patents looking for the most suitable systems for their projects. Drastically reducing the research time required to locate solutions to the latest challenges in automotive communications, it sorts and systematizes material on cutting-edge antenna arrays that feature multi-element communication systems with enormous potential for the automotive industry. These new systems promise to make driving safer and more efficient, opening up myriad applications, including vehicle-to-vehicle traffic that prevents collisions, automatic toll collection, vehicle location and fine-tuning for cruise control systems. This book's exhaustive coverage begins with currently deployed systems, frequency ranges and key parameters. It proceeds to examine system geometry, analog and digital beam steering technology (including "smart" beams formed in noisy environments), maximizing signal-to-noise ratios, miniaturization, and base station technology that facilitates in-car connectivity while on the move. An essential guide for technicians working in a fast-developing field, this new volume will be warmly welcomed as a powerful aid in their endeavors. |
