Reinforcement of Rubber - Visualization of Nanofiller and the Reinforcing Mechanism (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Shinzo Kohjiya,... Reinforcement of Rubber - Visualization of Nanofiller and the Reinforcing Mechanism (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Shinzo Kohjiya, Atsushi Kato, Yuko Ikeda
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents the most recent description of rubber reinforcement, focusing on the network-like structure formation of nanofiller in the rubber matrix under the presence of bound rubber. The resultant filler network is visualized by electron tomography applied to rubber. In the case of natural rubber, the self-reinforcement effect is uniquely functioning, and new template crystallization is suggested. Here, the crystallites are also believed to arrange themselves in a network-like manner. These results are of great use, particularly for engineers, in designing rubber reinforcement.

Modeling for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Using Simscape (Paperback): Shuvra Das Modeling for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Using Simscape (Paperback)
Shuvra Das
R1,968 Discovery Miles 19 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Automobiles have played an important role in the shaping of the human civilization for over a century and continue to play a crucial role today. The design, construction, and performance of automobiles have evolved over the years. For many years, there has been a strong shift toward electrification of automobiles. It started with the by-wire systems where more efficient electro-mechanical subsystems started replacing purely mechanical devices, e.g., anti-lock brakes, drive-by-wire, and cruise control. Over the last decade, driven by a strong push for fuel efficiency, pollution reduction, and environmental stewardship, electric and hybrid electric vehicles have become quite popular. In fact, almost all the automobile manufacturers have adopted strategies and launched vehicle models that are electric and/or hybrid. With this shift in technology, employers have growing needs for new talent in areas such as energy storage and battery technology, power electronics, electric motor drives, embedded control systems, and integration of multi-disciplinary systems. To support these needs, universities are adjusting their programs to train students in these new areas of expertise. For electric and hybrid technology to deliver superior performance and efficiency, all sub-systems have to work seamlessly and in unison every time and all the time. To ensure this level of precision and reliability, modeling and simulation play crucial roles during the design and development cycle of electric and hybrid vehicles. Simscape, a Matlab/Simulink toolbox for modeling physical systems, is an ideally suited platform for developing and deploying models for systems and sub-systems that are critical for hybrid and electric vehicles. This text will focus on guiding the reader in the development of models for all critical areas of hybrid and electric vehicles. There are numerous texts on electric and hybrid vehicles in the market right now. A majority of these texts focus on the relevant technology and the physics and engineering of their operation. In contrast, this text focuses on the application of some of the theories in developing models of physical systems that are at the core of hybrid and electric vehicles. Simscape is the tool of choice for the development of these models. Relevant background and appropriate theory are referenced and summarized in the context of model development with significantly more emphasis on the model development procedure and obtaining usable and accurate results.

Global Vehicle Reliability - Prediction and Optimization Techniques (Hardcover): J.E. Strutt Global Vehicle Reliability - Prediction and Optimization Techniques (Hardcover)
J.E. Strutt
R3,652 Discovery Miles 36 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Global Vehicle Reliability" promotes an understanding of the use of predictive models, failure analysis, and modelling techniques. The chapters, written by experts from Jaguar, Ford, independent industry consultants, and respected academics, emphasize the need to correlate life-testing to real world usage profiles.

In an increasingly competitive marketplace, reliability and predicting failure correctly can provide an edge, or mean commercial disaster if it is not managed well," Global" "Vehicle Reliability" will be of interest to automotive engineers involved in reliability testing, designers, manufacturers, component suppliers, testing houses, and key automotive decision makers.

Vehicles are now global in their brand marketing, manufacture, and development. This international spread and network of research, development, supply, and assembly provides real challenges in the maintenance of high standards of reliability.

The global vehicle has to be able to perform reliably and be easy to maintain in all the world-wide territories that the manufacturer is selling into. Vehicles are becoming increasingly complex and the purchaser expects better and better reliability. The onus is on the manufacturers, their suppliers, the testing houses, and the whole international network of brand developers to meet these expectations.

Aircraft Aerodynamic Parameter Estimation from Flight Data Using Neural Partial Differentiation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021):... Aircraft Aerodynamic Parameter Estimation from Flight Data Using Neural Partial Differentiation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Majeed Mohamed, Vikalp Dongare
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents neural partial differentiation as an estimation algorithm for extracting aerodynamic derivatives from flight data. It discusses neural modeling of the aircraft system. The neural partial differentiation approach discussed in the book helps estimate parameters with their statistical information from the noisy data. Moreover, this method avoids the need for prior information about the aircraft model parameters. The objective of the book is to extend the use of the neural partial differentiation method to the multi-input multi-output aircraft system for the online estimation of aircraft parameters from an established neural model. This approach will be relevant for the design of an adaptive flight control system. The book also discusses the estimation of aerodynamic derivatives of rigid and flexible aircraft which are treated separately. The longitudinal and lateral-directional derivatives of aircraft are estimated from flight data. Besides the aerodynamic derivatives, mode shape parameters of flexible aircraft are also identified in the book as part of identification for the state space aircraft model. Since the detailed description of the approach is illustrated through the block diagram and their results are presented in tabular form with figures of parameters converge to their estimates, the contents of this book are intended for readers who want to pursue a postgraduate and doctoral degree in science and engineering. This book is useful for practicing scientists, engineers, and teachers in the field of aerospace engineering.

Aerodynamic Study on the Vehicle Shape Parameters with Respect to Ground Simulation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Chenyi Zhang Aerodynamic Study on the Vehicle Shape Parameters with Respect to Ground Simulation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Chenyi Zhang
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Chenyi Zhang analyzes the influences of moving ground simulation technique in wind tunnel tests. In his work, the classical investigations on vehicle shape parameters with fixed ground conditions are reviewed with modern moving ground simulation technique. The investigations are performed by means of CFD simulations and model scale wind tunnel tests at IFS, University of Stuttgart. The shape parameters of two reference vehicles - the DrivAer and the AeroSUV model with notchback, fastback and estate back - are varied and investigated. The author presents different results in drag and lift for the varied geometry parameters. The classical results of the parametric study on the vehicle basic shapes for vehicle aerodynamics could be complemented with the findings of the present research.

Algorithm Concept for Crash Detection in Passenger Cars (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Andre Leschke Algorithm Concept for Crash Detection in Passenger Cars (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Andre Leschke
R4,011 Discovery Miles 40 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

State-of-the-art airbag algorithms make a decision to fire restraint systems in a crash by evaluating the deceleration of the entire vehicle during the single events of the accident. In order to meet the ever increasing requirements of consumer test organizations and global legislators, a detailed knowledge of the nature and direction of the crash would be of great benefit. The algorithms used in current vehicles can only do this to a limited extent. Andre Leschke presents a completely different algorithm concept to solve these problems. In addition to vehicle deceleration, the chronological sequence of an accident and the associated local and temporal destruction of the vehicle are possible indicators for an accident's severity. About the Author: Dr. Andre Leschke has earned his doctoral degree from Tor-Vergata University of Rome, Italy. Currently, he is working as head of a team of vehicle safety developers in the German automotive industry.

A Quasi-Dimensional SI Burn Rate Model for Carbon-Neutral Fuels (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Sebastian Hann A Quasi-Dimensional SI Burn Rate Model for Carbon-Neutral Fuels (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Sebastian Hann
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Sebastian Hann describes the development of a quasi-dimensional burn rate model that enables the prediction of a fuel variation, without the need for a recalibration of the model. The model is valid for spark-ignition combustion engines powered by conventional and carbon-neutral fuels. Its high predictive ability was achieved by modeling the fuel-dependent laminar flame speed based on reaction kinetics calculations. In addition, the author discards a fuel influence on flame wrinkling by performing an engine measurement data analysis. He investigates the fuel influence on engine knock and models it via ignition delay times obtained from reaction kinetics calculations.

Magnetic Material for Motor Drive Systems - Fusion Technology of Electromagnetic Fields (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Keisuke... Magnetic Material for Motor Drive Systems - Fusion Technology of Electromagnetic Fields (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Keisuke Fujisaki
R4,280 Discovery Miles 42 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book focuses on how to use magnetic material usefully for electrical motor drive system, especially electrical vehicles and power electronics. The contents have been selected in such a way that engineers in other fields might find some of the ideas difficult to grasp, but they can easily acquire a general or basic understanding of related concepts if they acquire even a rudimentary understanding of the selected contents. The cutting-edge technologies of magnetism are also explained. From the fundamental theory of magnetism to material, equipment, and applications, readers can understand the underlying concepts. Therefore, a new electric vehicle from the point of view of magnetic materials or a new magnetic material from the point of a view of electric vehicles can be envisioned: that is, magnetic material for motor drive systems based on fusion technology of an electromagnetic field. Magnetic material alone does not make up an electric vehicle, of course. Other components such as mechanical structure material, semiconductors, fuel cells, and electrically conductive material are important, and they are difficult to achieve. However, magnetic material involves one of the most important key technologies, and there are high expectations for its use in the future. It will be the future standard for motor-drive system researchers and of magneticmaterial researchers as well. This book is a first step in that direction.

Acoustic Analysis and Design of Short Elliptical End-Chamber Mufflers (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Akhilesh Mimani Acoustic Analysis and Design of Short Elliptical End-Chamber Mufflers (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Akhilesh Mimani
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents a three-dimensional analysis of acoustic wave propagation in an elliptical waveguide, and applies the equations and concepts to design axially short elliptical end-chamber muffler configurations which are an important component of a complex multi-pass muffler used in a modern-day automotive exhaust system. A general solution of the Helmholtz equation in elliptical cylindrical co-ordinates is presented in terms of the Mathieu and modified Mathieu modal functions. This is followed by the tabulation and analysis, for the first time, of the non-dimensional resonance frequencies of the transverse modes of a rigid-wall elliptical waveguide for a complete range of aspect ratio. The modal shape patterns of the first few circumferential, radial and cross-modes are examined with particular attention to the pressure nodal ellipses and hyperbolae. An analytical formulation is then outlined for characterizing a single-inlet and single-outlet elliptical muffler with the inlet located on the end face and the outlet located either on the end face or side-surface. The ensuing chapter is devoted toward analyzing the Transmission Loss (TL) performance of different short end-chamber mufflers, namely (a) the straight-flow configuration having ports located on the opposite face, (b) the flow-reversal configuration with ports located on the same end face and (c) configuration with inlet port on the end face and outlet on the side surface. Design guidelines are formulated in terms of the optimal location of inlet and outlet ports which suppresses the deteriorating influence of certain higher-order modes, thereby delivering a broadband TL performance. Directions for future work are discussed toward the end. In summary, this book is a one-stop solution for a practicing automotive engineer designing mufflers, for an applied mathematician studying wave propagation in elliptical geometries, and also as a niche area within noise control engineering.

Antonino Vacca
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Water injection is one of the most promising technologies to improve the engine combustion efficiency, by mitigating knock occurrences and controlling exhaust gas temperature before turbine. As result, the engine can operate at stoichiometric conditions over the whole engine map, even during the more power-demanding RDE cycles. Antonino Vacca presents a methodology to study and optimize the effect of water injection for gasoline engines by investigating different engine layouts and injection strategies through the set-up of a 3D-CFD virtual test bench. He investigates indirect and direct water injection strategies to increase the engine knock limit and to reduce exhaust gas temperature for several operating points.

Tribological Analysis and Design of a Modern Automobile Cam and Follower (Hardcover): G. Zhu Tribological Analysis and Design of a Modern Automobile Cam and Follower (Hardcover)
G. Zhu
R4,864 Discovery Miles 48 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An "Engineering Research Series" title. This excellent and long awaited book is based upon extensive research carried out by the Institute of Tribology at the University of Leeds in the UK and the Ford Motor Company Ltd. It is concerned with both the theoretical and experimental study of the tribological performance of an automobile valve train, having an offset taper cam and a domed follower, incorporated with an hydraulic lash adjuster, with particular reference to the ZETA engine valve train. A sophisticated theoretical model has been developed that predicts the tribological performance of the valve train, and also provides a useful tool for the consideration of the tribological design of valve trains. Additionally the model can estimate the instantaneous and average rotational frequency of the follower, and the performance of the hydraulic lash adjuster. In order to validate the theoretical model, the experimental measurements have been correlated with the theoretical predictions that simulate the test conditions of the valve train. The agreement between the measurements and the predictions show that the model is very reliable. This gives readers great confidence in using the model when dealing with novel and alternative designs of the valve train. The complete contents include: Part One - theoretical formulation, kinematics and dynamics of the cam and follower, hydraulic lash adjuster, the maximum hertzian stresses, asperity interactions, the oil film thickness, friction and power loss of the valve train, the rotation of the follower, the overall solution procedure and input/output data, and an example of the tribological analysis of a valve train; Part Two - experimental Study, test apparatus and the instrumentation, calibration of the instrumentation and commissioning tests, test procedure, data processing, and experimental results and discussions; Part Three - correlation of theory and experiments, experimental evidences, theoretical predictions, comparison of results and discussions, and overall conclusions.
