Analysis of Cache Performance for Operating Systems and Multiprogramming (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Analysis of Cache Performance for Operating Systems and Multiprogramming (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)

R2,633 Discovery Miles 26 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As we continue to build faster and fast. er computers, their performance is be coming increasingly dependent on the memory hierarchy. Both the clock speed of the machine and its throughput per clock depend heavily on the memory hierarchy. The time to complet. e a cache acce88 is oft. en the factor that det. er mines the cycle time. The effectiveness of the hierarchy in keeping the average cost of a reference down has a major impact on how close the sustained per formance is to the peak performance. Small changes in the performance of the memory hierarchy cause large changes in overall system performance. The strong growth of ruse machines, whose performance is more tightly coupled to the memory hierarchy, has created increasing demand for high performance memory systems. This trend is likely to accelerate: the improvements in main memory performance will be small compared to the improvements in processor performance. This difference will lead to an increasing gap between prOCe880r cycle time and main memory acce. time. This gap must be closed by improving the memory hierarchy. Computer architects have attacked this gap by designing machines with cache sizes an order of magnitude larger than those appearing five years ago. Microproce880r-based RISe systems now have caches that rival the size of those in mainframes and supercomputers."

Alok N. Choudary, J. H. Patel
R2,622 Discovery Miles 26 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Computer vision is one of the most complex and computationally intensive problem. Like any other computationally intensive problems, parallel pro cessing has been suggested as an approach to solving the problems in com puter vision. Computer vision employs algorithms from a wide range of areas such as image and signal processing, advanced mathematics, graph theory, databases and artificial intelligence. Hence, not only are the comput ing requirements for solving vision problems tremendous but they also demand computers that are efficient to solve problems exhibiting vastly dif ferent characteristics. With recent advances in VLSI design technology, Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) massively parallel computers have been proposed and built. However, such architectures have been shown to be useful for solving a very limited subset of the problems in vision. Specifically, algorithms from low level vision that involve computations closely mimicking the architec ture and require simple control and computations are suitable for massively parallel SIMD computers. An Integrated Vision System (IVS) involves com putations from low to high level vision to be executed in a systematic fashion and repeatedly. The interaction between computations and information dependent nature of the computations suggests that architectural require ments for computer vision systems can not be satisfied by massively parallel SIMD computers."

R1,374 Discovery Miles 13 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is on dependence concepts and general methods for dependence testing. Here, dependence means data dependence and the tests are compile-time tests. We felt the time was ripe to create a solid theory of the subject, to provide the research community with a uniform conceptual framework in which things fit together nicely. How successful we have been in meeting these goals, of course, remains to be seen. We do not try to include all the minute details that are known, nor do we deal with clever tricks that all good programmers would want to use. We do try to convince the reader that there is a mathematical basis consisting of theories of bounds of linear functions and linear diophantine equations, that levels and direction vectors are concepts that arise rather natu rally, that different dependence tests are really special cases of some general tests, and so on. Some mathematical maturity is needed for a good understand ing of the book: mainly calculus and linear algebra. We have cov ered diophantine equations rather thoroughly and given a descrip of some matrix theory ideas that are not very widely known. tion A reader familiar with linear programming would quickly recog nize several concepts. We have learned a great deal from the works of M. Wolfe, and K. Kennedy and R. Allen. Wolfe's Ph. D. thesis at the University of Illinois and Kennedy & Allen's paper on vectorization of Fortran programs are still very useful sources on this subject."

Tremendous achievements in the area of semiconductor electronics turn - croelectronics into nanoelectronics. Actually, we observe a real technical boom connected with achievements in nanoelectronics. It results in devel- mentofverycomplexintegratedcircuits, particularlythe?eldprogrammable logic devices (FPLD). Up-to-day FPLD chips are so huge, that it is enough only one chip to implement a really complex digital system including a da- path and a control unit. Because of the extreme complexity of modern - crochips, it is very important to develop e?ective design methods oriented on particular properties of logic elements. The development of digital s- tems with use of FPLD microchips is not possible without use of di?erent hardware description languages(HDL), such as VHDL and Verilog. Di?erent computer-aided design tools (CAD) are wide used to develop digital system hardware. As majorityof researchespoint out, the design processis nowvery similar to the process of program development. It allows a researcher to pay more attention to some speci?c problems, where there are no standard f- mal methods of their solution. But application of all these achievements does not guaranteeper sedevelopmentof some competitiveelectronic product, - pecially in the acceptable time-to-market. This problem solution is possible only if a researcher possesses fundamental knowledge of a design process and knows exactly the mode of operation of industrial CAD tools in use. As it is known, any digital system can be represented as a composition of a da- path and a control uni

A.K. Sood, A. H Qureshi
R2,751 Discovery Miles 27 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume consists of a collection of 28 papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held July 14-27, 1985 in the beautiful resort at Les Arcs, France. The director of this ASI was A. K. Sood and A. H. Qureshi was the co-director. Since its introduction in the early 1970s the relational data model has been widely accepted. Several research and industrial efforts are being undertaken to develop special purpose database machines to implement the relational model. In addition, database machines are being explored for applications such as image processing and information retrieval. In this NATO-ASI the lecturers discussed special purpose database machine architectures from the viewpoint of architecture and hardware detail, software, user needs, theoretical framework and applications. The papers presented were of two types - regular papers and short papers. The research in database machines is being conducted in several countries. This fact is under scored when it is noted that papers in this volume are authored by researchers in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Turkey, U.K. and U.S.A. The first paper discusses the experience and applications of users with a commercially available database machine. In the following eight papers the characteristics of six database machines are discussed. The second, third and fourth papers deal with the RDBM project at the Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany). Zeidler discusses the design objectives, architecture and system design of RDBM. Teich presents the hardware utilized for sorting."

[2]. The Cell Processor from Sony, Toshiba and IBM (STI) [3], and the Sun UltraSPARC T1 (formerly codenamed Niagara) [4] signal the growing popularity of such systems. Furthermore, Intel's very recently announced 80-core TeraFLOP chip [5] exemplifies the irreversible march toward many-core systems with tens or even hundreds of processing elements. 1.2 The Dawn of the Communication-Centric Revolution The multi-core thrust has ushered the gradual displacement of the computati- centric design model by a more communication-centric approach [6]. The large, sophisticated monolithic modules are giving way to several smaller, simpler p- cessing elements working in tandem. This trend has led to a surge in the popularity of multi-core systems, which typically manifest themselves in two distinct incarnations: heterogeneous Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoC) and homogeneous Chip Multi-Processors (CMP). The SoC philosophy revolves around the technique of Platform-Based Design (PBD) [7], which advocates the reuse of Intellectual Property (IP) cores in flexible design templates that can be customized accordingly to satisfy the demands of particular implementations. The appeal of such a modular approach lies in the substantially reduced Time-To- Market (TTM) incubation period, which is a direct outcome of lower circuit complexity and reduced design effort. The whole system can now be viewed as a diverse collection of pre-existing IP components integrated on a single die.

Security for Service Oriented Architectures (Paperback): Walter Williams Security for Service Oriented Architectures (Paperback)
Walter Williams
R1,978 Discovery Miles 19 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although integrating security into the design of applications has proven to deliver resilient products, there are few books available that provide guidance on how to incorporate security into the design of an application. Filling this need, Security for Service Oriented Architectures examines both application and security architectures and illustrates the relationship between the two. Supplying authoritative guidance on how to design distributed and resilient applications, the book provides an overview of the various standards that service oriented and distributed applications leverage, including SOAP, HTML 5, SAML, XML Encryption, XML Signature, WS-Security, and WS-SecureConversation. It examines emerging issues of privacy and discusses how to design applications within a secure context to facilitate the understanding of these technologies you need to make intelligent decisions regarding their design. This complete guide to security for web services and SOA considers the malicious user story of the abuses and attacks against applications as examples of how design flaws and oversights have subverted the goals of providing resilient business functionality. It reviews recent research on access control for simple and conversation-based web services, advanced digital identity management techniques, and access control for web-based workflows. Filled with illustrative examples and analyses of critical issues, this book provides both security and software architects with a bridge between software and service-oriented architectures and security architectures, with the goal of providing a means to develop software architectures that leverage security architectures. It is also a reliable source of reference on Web services standards. Coverage includes the four types of architectures, implementing and securing SOA, Web 2.0, other SOA platforms, auditing SOAs, and defending and detecting attacks.

R4,082 Discovery Miles 40 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Soft computing is a consortium of computing methodologies that provide a foundation for the conception, design, and deployment of intelligent systems and aims to formalize the human ability to make rational decisions in an environment of uncertainty and imprecision. This book is based on a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in 1996 on soft computing and its applications. The distinguished contributors consider the principal constituents of soft computing, namely fuzzy logic, neurocomputing, genetic computing, and probabilistic reasoning, the relations between them, and their fusion in industrial applications. Two areas emphasized in the book are how to achieve a synergistic combination of the main constituents of soft computing and how the combination can be used to achieve a high Machine Intelligence Quotient.

Alexander S. Mikhailov, Alexander Yu Loskutov
R1,396 Discovery Miles 13 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This textbook is based on a lecture course in synergetics given at the University of Moscow. In this second of two volumes, we discuss the emergence and properties of complex chaotic patterns in distributed active systems. Such patterns can be produced autonomously by a system, or can result from selective amplification of fluctuations caused by external weak noise. Although the material in this book is often described by refined mathematical theories, we have tried to avoid a formal mathematical style. Instead of rigorous proofs, the reader will usually be offered only "demonstrations" (the term used by Prof. V. I. Arnold) to encourage intuitive understanding of a problem and to explain why a particular statement seems plausible. We also refrained from detailing concrete applications in physics or in other scientific fields, so that the book can be used by students of different disciplines. While preparing the lecture course and producing this book, we had intensive discussions with and asked the advice of Prof. V. I. Arnold, Prof. S. Grossmann, Prof. H. Haken, Prof. Yu. L. Klimontovich, Prof. R. L. Stratonovich and Prof. Ya.

Veljko Milutinovic
R4,056 Discovery Miles 40 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Design is an art form in which the designer selects from a myriad of alternatives to bring an "optimum" choice to a user. In many complex of "optimum" is difficult to define. Indeed, the users systems the notion themselves will not agree, so the "best" system is simply the one in which the designer and the user have a congruent viewpoint. Compounding the design problem are tradeoffs that span a variety of technologies and user requirements. The electronic business system is a classically complex system whose tradeoff criteria and user views are constantly changing with rapidly developing underlying technology. Professor Milutinovic has chosen this area for his capstone contribution to the computer systems design. This book completes his trilogy on design issue in computer systems. His first work, "Surviving the Design of a 200 MHz RISC Microprocessor" (1997) focused on the tradeoffs and design issues within a processor. His second work, "Surviving the Design of Microprocessor and Multiprocessor Systems" (2000) considers the design issues involved with assembling a number of processors into a coherent system. Finally, this book generalizes the system design problem to electronic commerce on the Internet, a global system of immense consequence.

The Design of a Microprocessor (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): Wilhelm G Spruth The Design of a Microprocessor (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Wilhelm G Spruth
R1,441 Discovery Miles 14 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This text has been produced for the benefit of students in computer and infor mation science and for experts involved in the design of microprocessors. It deals with the design of complex VLSI chips, specifically of microprocessor chip sets. The aim is on the one hand to provide an overview of the state of the art, and on the other hand to describe specific design know-how. The depth of detail presented goes considerably beyond the level of information usually found in computer science text books. The rapidly developing discipline of designing complex VLSI chips, especially microprocessors, requires a significant extension of the state of the art. We are observing the genesis of a new engineering discipline, the design and realization of very complex logical structures, and we are obviously only at the beginning. This discipline is still young and immature, alternate concepts are still evolving, and "the best way to do it" is still being explored. Therefore it is not yet possible to describe the different methods in use and to evaluate them. However, the economic impact is significant today, and the heavy investment that companies in the USA, the Far East, and in Europe, are making in gener ating VLSI design competence is a testimony to the importance this field is expected to have in the future. Staying competitive requires mastering and extending this competence.

Memory Storage Patterns in Parallel Processing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): Mary E. Mace Memory Storage Patterns in Parallel Processing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
Mary E. Mace
R1,370 Discovery Miles 13 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This project had its beginnings in the Fall of 1980. At that time Robert Wagner suggested that I investigate compiler optimi zation of data organization, suitable for use in a parallel or vector machine environment. We developed a scheme in which the compiler, having knowledge of the machine's access patterns, does a global analysis of a program's operations, and automatically determines optimum organization for the data. For example, for certain architectures and certain operations, large improvements in performance can be attained by storing a matrix in row major order. However a subsequent operation may require the matrix in column major order. A determination must be made whether or not it is the best solution globally to store the matrix in row order, column order, or even have two copies of it, each organized differently. We have developed two algorithms for making this determination. The technique shows promise in a vector machine environ ment, particularly if memory interleaving is used. Supercomputers such as the Cray, the CDC Cyber 205, the IBM 3090, as well as superminis such as the Convex are possible environments for implementation."

Real-Time Object Measurement and Classification (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988): Anil K. Jain Real-Time Object Measurement and Classification (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)
Anil K. Jain
R2,701 Discovery Miles 27 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contains papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Real-time Object and Environment Measurement and Classification" held in Maratea, Italy, August 31 - September 3, 1987. This workshop was organized within the activities of the NATO Special Programme on Sensory Systems for Robotic Control. Four major themes were discussed at this workshop: Real-time Requirements, Feature Measurement, Object Representation and Recognition, and Architecture for Measurement and Classification. A total of twenty-five technical presentations, contained in this book, cover a wide spectrum of topics including hardware implementation of specific vision algorithms, a complete vision system for object tracking and inspection, using three cameras (trinocular stereo) for feature measurement, neural network for object recognition, integration of CAD (Computer Aided Design) and vision systems, and the use of pyramid architectures for solving various computer vision problems. These papers are written by some of the very well-known researchers in the computer vision and pattern recognition community, and represent both industrial and academic viewpoints. The authors come from thirteen different countries from Europe and North America. Therefore, readers will get a first hand and current information about the status of computer vision research in various western countries. Further, this book will also be useful in understanding the current research issues in computer vision and the difficulties in designing real-time vision systems.

Dependence Analysis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997): Utpal Banerjee Dependence Analysis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997)
Utpal Banerjee
R3,996 Discovery Miles 39 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dependence Analysis may be considered to be the second edition of the author's 1988 book, Dependence Analysis for Supercomputing. It is, however, a completely new work that subsumes the material of the 1988 publication. This book is the third volume in the series Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers. This series has been designed to provide a complete mathematical theory of transformations that can be used to automatically change a sequential program containing FORTRAN-like do loops into an equivalent parallel form. In Dependence Analysis, the author extends the model to a program consisting of do loops and assignment statements, where the loops need not be sequentially nested and are allowed to have arbitrary strides. In the context of such a program, the author studies, in detail, dependence between statements of the program caused by program variables that are elements of arrays. Dependence Analysis is directed toward graduate and undergraduate students, and professional writers of restructuring compilers. The prerequisite for the book consists of some knowledge of programming languages, and familiarity with calculus and graph theory. No knowledge of linear programming is required.

Ramachandran Vaidyanathan, Jerry Trahan
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dynamic Reconfiguration: Architectures and Algorithms offers a comprehensive treatment of dynamically reconfigurable computer architectures and algorithms for them. The coverage is broad starting from fundamental algorithmic techniques, ranging across algorithms for a wide array of problems and applications, to simulations between models. The presentation employs a single reconfigurable model (the reconfigurable mesh) for most algorithms, to enable the reader to distill key ideas without the cumbersome details of a myriad of models. In addition to algorithms, the book discusses topics that provide a better understanding of dynamic reconfiguration such as scalability and computational power, and more recent advances such as optical models, run-time reconfiguration (on FPGA and related platforms), and implementing dynamic reconfiguration. The book, featuring many examples and a large set of exercises, is an excellent textbook or reference for a graduate course. It is also a useful reference to researchers and system developers in the area.
