Raising a Father (Hardcover): Arjun Sen Raising a Father (Hardcover)
Arjun Sen
R734 Discovery Miles 7 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Raising a Father is a celebration. This affectionate and appealing story gives smiles, tears and renewed faith in the human spirit."
-Brent Green, Author, "Marketing to Leading-edge Baby Boomers: Perceptions, Principles, Practices, Prediction"

..". should be required reading for the planet. Uplifting, instructive, and describes so much of what fathers should aspire to in their relationship with their children."
-Herb Rubenstein, Sustainable Business Group

"Raising a Father provides a very candid and honest assessment of the everyday obstacles we all face in trying to attain the proper work-life balance."
- Peter J. Pittman, President, Denver West Rotary Club

During Arjun Sen's tenure in the corporate world, a wise, corporate stair-climbing friend told him, "Arjun, in order to achieve bigger glories, one must make smaller sacrifices in life." It was clear he referred to spending less time with family, not being there for children's special moments, and similar "small" sacrifices in personal life. Sen learns the hard way that these sacrifices come with large costs, and in "Raising a Father" he recounts his journey to this realization.

Foreseeing his father-daughter future reduced to obligatory phone calls on birthdays and Father's Day, Sen leaves corporate America. He founds a home-based marketing consulting company in Denver, his ten-year-old daughter's favorite city; names his daughter as manager; and begins the real journey of becoming a true father.

In this memoir, Sen discusses how he now measures success differently. "Raising a Father" tells the story of how a young girl uses her charm, her love, and her caring nature to train her dad to become a better father and a better person.

Big Daddy's Rules - Raising Daughters Is Tougher Than I Look (Paperback): Steve Schirripa Big Daddy's Rules - Raising Daughters Is Tougher Than I Look (Paperback)
Steve Schirripa; As told to Philip Lerman
R381 Discovery Miles 3 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From world-famous tough guy and New York Times bestselling author Steve Schirripa--a winning mix of wisecracks and wise words on the hardest job of all: being a father. What happens when a world-famous tough guy takes on the toughest job of all-- becoming a father? Welcome to the world of the Big Daddy. Steve Schirripa is known for his star turns on The Sopranos and The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but in his own life he's the father of two daughters of his own--and a self-confessed human volcano. In Big Daddy's Rules, Schirripa tells all and brings a welcome dose of old-school advice (and new-school humor) to the parenting wars. "You're not there to be a friend," Schirripa says bluntly. "You're there to be a dad." Schirripa serves up the heartwarming and hilarious stories of how he and his wife navigated the wild waters of parenthood: from the moment the tough guy's heart melted when he held his first-born in his arms to what he felt (and did) the time he caught someone looking at his teenage daughter's butt. He lays out all the rules for being a Big Daddy-- someone who is strong, devoted, and always looking out for his kids' best interests, even when that means not being the coolest dad on the block. Overprotective? Maybe. Willing to tone it down? Absolutely not. Big Daddy's Rules is filled with tales of his over-the-top yet heartfelt parenting style--confronting bad teachers, staring down boyfriends, and explaining just how crazy you're allowed to get if you catch your kid drinking (hint: really, really crazy). With a mixture of street-smart bravado and selfeffacing humor, Schirripa pulls no punches as he delivers his no-bull stance on what it takes to raise kids today. He's uproariously funny, but Schirripa isn't just cracking jokes here; this is also a call to action for dads to return to common-sense parenting and reclaim their role as protector and holder of values to be passed down.

Fewer Men, More Babies - Sex, Family, and Fertility in Haiti (Hardcover): Timothy T Schwartz Fewer Men, More Babies - Sex, Family, and Fertility in Haiti (Hardcover)
Timothy T Schwartz
R3,669 Discovery Miles 36 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fewer Men, More Babies re-evaluates the debate over family patterns in the Caribbean with respect to the critical importance that child labor plays in peasant household livelihood strategies. Earlier anthropologists widely accepted and provided empirical evidence that the contributions made by children to the peasant household labor pool was a significant determinant of social patterns and high birth rates. In the 1960s researchers began to dismiss the economic utility of children. Children were conceptualized as economic burdens, wanted for emotional, religious, and cultural reasons. This ideational trend emerged in the context of changes in Western economies and corresponding shifts in ideology; it reflected agendas promoted and exported to the developing world by aid agencies; and it derailed the refinement of academic models that explain kinship and high fertility. This shortcoming is especially evident in the Caribbean. Based on original ethnographic research, this book demonstrates how the process unfolds in contemporary rural Haiti; how intensive work regimes make children necessary; how this necessity conditions sexual behavior, gender relations, and kinship; and why, despite massive contraceptive campaigns, birth rates in rural Haiti continue to be among the highest in the world. Schwartz offers a solution to a demographic paradox that some of the most prominent sociologists and demographers of the 20th century noted but were never able to explain: among impoverished small farmers, when more men are absent due to male wage migration, the women remaining behind give birth to more, not fewer, babies.

The Unbreakable Boy: A Father's Fear, a Son's Courage and a Story of Unconditional Love, is the raucously tender story of the life of a teenage boy with autism and a rare brittle bone disease who joyfully embraces life's tragedies and triumphs.

Like any other teenage boy, Austin loves pizza, movies, dancing, and girls. But unlike most other eighteen-year-olds, he has a rare brittle bone disease, was locked in a mental ward as a child, and is autistic. Yet Austin doesn't let any of that stop him. Every day is the best day in the world to him and one of his main goals in life is to show his broken father, and anyone else hanging around, that life is all about unabashed faith and love.

Written with remarkable candor by Austin's father, Scott, and New York Times best-selling author Susy Flory, The Unbreakable Boy weaves the beautiful and often humorous tale of how Austin teaches his father—and everyone else he encounters—to have faith in God and trust that one day life's messes will all make sense. Austin's journey dares us all to believe that:

• Miracles are possible.
• Hope does spring eternal.
• We can find joyous moments to celebrate every day.

Austin's magic touch will convince you that whatever life challenges you face can always be answered with love. Grab a front-row seat and learn from the Unbreakable Boy how to live a life of joy, hope, and resilience regardless of your circumstances.

"The parenting genre is never going to be the same" (Jancee Dunn, author of How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids) after this candid and hilarious collection of essays on motherhood from the award-winning television comedy writer and producer of 2 Broke Girls and The King of Queens, who swears she loves her kids--when she's not hiding from them. Some women feel that motherhood is a calling and their purpose on earth. They somehow manage to make pregnancy look effortless, bring out the beauty in a screaming child, and keep the back seat of their cars as spotless as their kitchens. And then there are women like Liz Astrof--who originally had children because "everyone else was." In this blunt and side-splittingly funny book of essays (previously published as Don't Wait Up), Liz Astrof embraces the realities of motherhood (and womanhood) that no one ever talks about: like needing to hide from your kids in your closet, your car, or a yoga class on the other side of town, letting them eat candy for dinner because you just can't deal, to the sheer terror of failing them or at the very least losing them in a mall. And sometimes, many times, wondering if the whole parenting thing wasn't for you. Perfect for fans of Let's Pretend This Never Happened and I Heart My Little A-Holes, Stay-At-Work Mom is a soul-baring and honest look at parenting and relationships for moms who realize that motherhood doesn't have to be your entire life--just an amazing part of it.

Devotions for Sacred Parenting (Hardcover): Gary Thomas Devotions for Sacred Parenting (Hardcover)
Gary Thomas
R432 Discovery Miles 4 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Raising children is a sacred calling-and not for the faint of heart. It shapes the parent every bit as much as parents shape their children. In Devotions for Sacred Parenting, Gary Thomas, author of Sacred Parenting, delves deeper into the conversation and contemplates the soul-transforming journey of being a parent. Many books have been written about how to parent your children effectively, how to become a better parent, and how effective parenting produces better kids. Devotions for Sacred Parenting explores an entirely different reality: how parenting transforms you, the parent. It explores the spiritual dynamics of parenting and why caring for your children is such an effective discipline in shaping your soul and forming the character of Christ within you. With all new material, 52 devotions explore the spiritual dynamics of parenting. These life-related devotions are creative, fresh, and encouraging, inspiring mothers and fathers to look at parenting from a different perspective-as a holy and high calling from God, and as an opportunity to grow spiritually as you strive to raise godly children. Devotions for Sacred Parenting helps you understand how God is parenting you as you parent your children.

Maybe your son or daughter is young and you don't know when you should even broach these subjects. Maybe you're too nervous or embarrassed to bring up some of these touchy subjects in the first place. Maybe you don't even realize how important these topics are. Maybe you want to talk to your kids but just don't know what to say. Sound appealing? Then we wrote this book for you.

Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting.

Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems.

Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep.

Moms are under so. much. pressure. Pressure that weighs us down and threatens to wipe us out. Are you ready for relief? Mom Set Free will empower you to parent in the confidence of God's grace and to experience the freedom you were created for. We moms are told that we have to get it all right so our kids turn out right. We're told that their entire futures are riding on our ability to perfectly orchestrate their lives. And we're told that the strength of their faith hinges on ours. And we begin to believe that if we just try hard enough, we can actually "be enough." These impossible standards leave us stuck in worry, anger, guilt, comparison, and shame. Jeannie Cunnion gets it. And in Mom Set Free she reveals how the Good News of the Gospel empowers us to live--and parent--in the freedom for which Christ has set us free. Jeannie invites us to journey alongside her as we learn to: * Lay down what God has not asked us to carry so we can thrive in what He has. * Embrace our significance in our children's lives in light of God's sovereignty. * Trust God with the children He has entrusted to us. * Receive God's grace so we can reflect God's heart to our kids. It's time to breathe deeper, walk lighter, and reclaim the wonder and adventure of parenting.

A Miracle Life is a MUST read book for every woman, parent, teacher, counselor and the general public. It is a book that will touch everyone that reads it. The book tells of the dilemma of a woman who had to suffer the agonizing problems of a child who could not understand why he was different from other children who could easily read and write. It tells of the problem a grandmother had of bringing up a child, born prematurely and who turned out to be dyslexic. The book tells of a society which knew nothing of dyslexia and thought the child was abnormally dull and could not be helped. The woman struggled and managed to get her child through to High School.

The child himself suffered ridicule from his peers and extreme embarrassment from society which did not understand him and which rejected him at times. In the end Tiza becomes lonely and withdrawn. He starts fearing to go to school because his class mates laughed at him when he failed to read and write properly. The trauma of it all is agonizing.

Theresa Nyirenda has resolved that no other woman should suffer the way she and her grandchild suffered because of lack of knowledge on Dyslexia. Through this book, she has taken a stand to sensitize the public and lobby everybody concerned that Dyslexia is real and dyslexics should be helped because these people have special gifts and if well trained, they could become responsible citizens in the country and the world.

CON: They're really crappy.") With accessibility and wit, she captures the emotions around parenthood in artful and earnest ways, highlighting this time in the middle-midlife, the middle years of childhood, how women are stuck in the middle of so much. It's a place of elation, exhaustion, and time whipping past at warp speed. Finally, it's a quiet space to consider the girl you were, the mother you are, and the woman you are always becoming.
