Are you suffering the loss of a loved one? Feeling terribly isolated and shameful about your secret grief? Do you believe you should be over it? Are you considering seeing a therapist but believe you must be crazy to enter psychotherapy? Are you afraid to let a therapist know it's been a very long time since you lost your loved one and you are still feeling lonely and devastated? Are you afraid a psychotherapist will judge you-that he or she may find out you are soothing yourself by some unacceptable behavior? Have you stopped going to church? Cut yourself off from community and possibilities that have nurtured your spirit in the past? Are you just plain feeling badly about yourself? Have you ever felt any of these things? "Myself Help" is the story of anyone who has heard a critic in their mind, felt guilty about certain choices they've made, or felt loneliness while surrounded by loved ones. Dana Anderson shares her personal story while providing helpful tools for growth and healing. "Myself Help" is an inspirational tale told with humor.
This book offers an existential understanding of the process of
stuckness, exploring how we can soften stuckness and become more fluid
in our work and world.
In this revolutionary new book on music and emotion, Dr. John A. Snyder shows us how not to get depressed. Drawing on 40 years of clinical experience as a psychotherapist, he demonstrates that antidepressant pills are dangerous, addictive, and don't work. What does work is listening to feelings and moving toward the very feelings we object to most. Snyder illustrates the special relationship between music and emotion by exploring the inner life of composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). Often wrongly portrayed as neurotic, Mahler was actually quite resilient, despite the many tragedies of his short life--a strength that came from his ability to listen to his darkest feelings. Overcoming Depression explains how all of us can access that same emotional strength in our own lives. Written in a direct, conversational style and filled with personal stories from Snyder's life and practice, the book is designed to be a bedside companion to which readers can return again and again for insight and support. Dr Snyder forcefully challenges what is currently being taught in professional schools and to the public about feeling states. His insights are invaluable for any person interested in how we understand and integrate feeling into our daily lives. I especially recommend this book to any professional who works with people suffering from depression." - Dr. William Packard, psychiatrist "Interwoven with Mahler's riveting life story, Dr. Snyder has another agenda: a sweeping analysis of how sadness--which should be viewed as a normal part of the life experience-- has been hijacked and given a new identity as a Disease" requiring "Treatment" with a drug, courtesy of the pharmaceutical industry. -Dr. Donald Kushon, psychiatrist " Like Leonard Bernstein in his Young People s Concerts," John Snyder makes Mahler come alive. He traces the emotional threads that are woven through Mahler's life-in-music, creating a tapestry that helps us better understand our own 'life symphony' and how to orchestrate it. The book's lively and straightforward style makes even subtle concepts easy to grasp." -Dr. Judith D. Fisher, psychiatrist
This book compares the influence of the period leading up to World War II and of the war itself on the discipline of psychology in two major, but very different countries. During the 1930s, Soviet psychologists were formally isolated from developments in Western psychology by the ideological requirements of the Communist Party; in the United States, a vast variety of topics was being researched. When the war began, the discipline in the Soviet Union turned increasingly toward specialized topics, such as the rehabilitation of the wounded, ways to improve morale, and the psychological basis of color-camouflage. American psychologists, on the other hand, applied their psychometric and clinical skills to military needs. With the coming of "glasnost," American and Russian psychologists were able to collaborate to create the first thorough examinations of the state of wartime psychology in these countries. Of interest to all students and researchers of the history of psychology, psychological theory, and the history of World War II.

It follows my life story, along with many others, to show how we all changed our lives through craziness, diversity, loss, grief, break-ups, heartache, devastation, health issues, eating disorders, abuse, addictions, and the list goes on. Living in the now is what works for me. If you are not happy with your life as it is now, perhaps modifying just one viewpoint or outlook can help you discover and live your life's purpose. The mental well-being of children and adults is shockingly poor. Marc Brackett, author of Permission to Feel, knows why. And he knows what we can do. Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an emotion scientist, he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults – a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel. He was the first adult who managed to see Marc, listen to him, and recognize the suffering, bullying, and abuse he’d endured. And that was the beginning of Marc’s awareness that what he was going through was temporary. He wasn’t alone, he wasn’t stuck on a timeline, and he wasn’t “wrong” to feel scared, isolated, and angry. Now, best of all, he could do something about it. In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it. RULER has been proven to reduce stress and burnout, improve school climate, and enhance academic achievement. This book is the culmination of Marc’s development of RULER and his way to share the strategies and skills with readers around the world. It is tested, and it works. This book combines rigor, science, passion and inspiration in equal parts. Too many children and adults are suffering; they are ashamed of their feelings and emotionally unskilled, but they don’t have to be. Marc Brackett’s life mission is to reverse this course, and this book can show you how. |
