Der Wald ist die machtvollste Entfaltung pflanzlichen Lebens auf der Erdfeste, machtvoll nicht nur im Bild seiner auBeren Er- scheinung, machtvoll vor allem in der unaufhaltsamen Gewalt der Durchsetzung gegenuber anderen Pflanzengesellschaften. Oberall dort, wo die Bedingungen des Makroklimas Baumen ein dauern- des Gedeihen erlauben, verdrangt Wald fruher oder spater die Grasflur, die Heide, das Buschland, erobert er die yom Menschen nicht mehr verteidigten Ackerfluren zuruck, lost sie ab und be- hauptet dann seine Herrschaft. Freilich braucht der Wald ein MindestmaB an Feuchtigkeit und eine zusammenhangende frostfreie Vegetationszeit von minde- stens 60 Tagen im Jahr mit mindestens +IOOC mittlerer Tages- temperatur. Nur unterhalb dieser Grenzen haben Nicht-Wald- Formationen eine sichere Chance, dauernd beherrschend zu blei- ben als Prarie, Steppe, Tundra, Heide oder Dornbusch. Zwar konnen auch innerhalb der Waldklimax - und zwar be- sanders an ihren Grenzen - immer wiederkehrendes Bodenfeuer, Versumpfung, Versalzung, Sanduberwehung und Erosion an steilen Felshiingen den Wald jahrzehnte-, ja jahrhundertelang am FuBfassen hindern. Aber in cler Regel setzt er sich auch hier zu- letzt durch, nachdem Gruppen besonders harter und genugsamer Bodenpflanzen und Straucher, sog. "Pioniergesellschaften", ihm den Boden bereiteten. Dem Wald als Vegetationsform gibt der "Baum" sein augen- falliges Geprage. Ein Baum ist eine Pflanze mit verholzendem Stamm, die eine Scheitelhohe von mindestens 5 m erreichen kann.

Schwermetalle sind von Natur aus in allen Boeden vorhanden. Die jeweiligen Gehalte sind dabei abhangig von den in den bodenbildenden Ausgangsgesteinen vorhandenen Konzentrationen, von den chemischen Eigenschaften der einzelnen Schwermetalle und von der Entwicklungsgeschichte der Boeden. Von einer wirklichen Belastung fur den Boden kann daher nur bei zusatzlich anthropogen verursachtem Schwermetalleintrag gesprochen werden.
