Energy-Based Control of Electromechanical Systems - A Novel Passivity-Based Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Victor Manuel... Energy-Based Control of Electromechanical Systems - A Novel Passivity-Based Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Victor Manuel Hernandez-Guzman, Ramon Silva-Ortigoza, Jorge Alberto Orrante-Sakanassi
R4,811 Discovery Miles 48 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book introduces a passivity-based approach which simplifies the controller design task for AC-motors. It presents the application of this novel approach to several classes of AC motors, magnetic levitation systems, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and rigid robot manipulators actuated by AC motors. The novel passivity-based approach exploits the fact that the natural energy exchange existing between the mechanical and the electrical subsystems allows the natural cancellation of several high order terms during the stability analysis. This allows the authors to present some of the simplest controllers proposed in scientific literature, but provided with formal stability proofs. These simple control laws will be of use to practitioners as they are robust with respect to numerical errors and noise amplification, and are provided with tuning guidelines. Energy-based Control of Electromechanical Systems is intended for both theorists and practitioners. Therefore, the stability proofs are not based on abstract mathematical ideas but Lyapunov stability theory. Several interpretations of the proofs are given along the body of the book using simple energy ideas and the complete proofs are included in appendices. The complete modeling of each motor studied is also presented, allowing for a thorough understanding. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Structure and Synthesis of PID Controllers (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Aniruddha Datta, Ming-Tzu Ho, Shankar P Bhattacharyya Structure and Synthesis of PID Controllers (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Aniruddha Datta, Ming-Tzu Ho, Shankar P Bhattacharyya
R4,145 Discovery Miles 41 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In many industrial applications, the existing constraints mandate the use of controllers of low and fixed order while, typically, modern methods of optimal control produce high order controllers. Structure and Synthesis of PID Controllers seeks to start to bridge the resultant gap and presents a novel methodology for the design of low-order controllers such as those of the P, PI and PID types. Written in a self-contained and tutorial fashion, this research monograph first develops a fundamental result, generalizing a classical stability theorem - the Hermite-Biehler Theorem - and then applies it to designing controllers that are widely used in industry. It contains material on: current techniques for PID controller design, generalization of the Hermite-Biehler theorem, stabilization of linear time-invariant plants using PID controllers, optimal design with PID controllers, robust and non-fragile PID controller design, stabilization of first-order systems with time delay, constant-gain stabilization with desired damping, constant-gain stabilization of discrete-time plants. Practitioners, researchers and graduate students should find this book a valuable source of information on cutting-edge research in the field of control.

Discrete-Time Stochastic Sliding Mode Control Using Functional Observation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Satnesh Singh, S.... Discrete-Time Stochastic Sliding Mode Control Using Functional Observation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Satnesh Singh, S. Janardhanan
R3,106 Discovery Miles 31 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book extrapolates many of the concepts that are well defined for discrete-time deterministic sliding-mode control for use with discrete-time stochastic systems. It details sliding-function designs for various categories of linear time-invariant systems and its application for control. The resulting sliding-mode control addresses robustness issues and the functional-observer approach reduces the observer order substantially. Sliding-mode control (SMC) is designed for discrete-time stochastic systems, extended so that states lie within a specified band, and able to deal with incomplete information. Functional-observer-based SMC is designed for various clauses of stochastic systems: discrete-time; discrete-time with delay; state time-delayed; and those with parametric uncertainty. Stability considerations arising because of parametric uncertainty are taken into account and, where necessary, the effects of unmatched uncertainties mitigated. A simulation example is used to explain the use of the functional-observer approach to SMC design. Discrete-Time Stochastic Sliding-Mode Control Using Functional Observation will interest all researchers working in sliding-mode control and will be of particular assistance to graduate students in understanding the changes in design philosophy that arise when changing from continuous- to discrete-time systems. It helps to pave the way for further progress in applications of discrete-time SMC.

Julian Barreiro-Gomez
R2,665 Discovery Miles 26 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book reports on the implementation of evolutionary-game theory in the design of distributed optimization-based controllers. First, it discusses how the classical population-game approach can contribute to and complement the design of optimization-based controllers. It shows how the features of this approach can be exploited to extend their capabilities in the solution of distributed optimization problems, and examines density games in order to consider multiple coupled constraints and preserve the non-centralized information requirements. Furthermore, it establishes a close relationship between the possible interactions among agents in a population with constrained information sharing among different local controllers. It also discusses coalitional games, focusing on the Shapley power index and proposes an alternative method of computing the latter, which reduces computational time, as well as a different way of finding it using distributed communication structures. All the proposed strategies are then tested on various control problems, such as those related to the Barcelona water supply network, multiple continuous stirred tank reactors, various unmanned aerial vehicle systems, and a water distribution system. This thesis, examined at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and Universidad de los Andes in 2017, received the award for best thesis in control from the control group of the Spanish Committee of Automatic Control (CEA) in the same year.

Logic Synthesis for FPGA-Based Control Units - Structural Decomposition in Logic Design (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Alexander... Logic Synthesis for FPGA-Based Control Units - Structural Decomposition in Logic Design (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Alexander Barkalov, Larysa Titarenko, Kamil Mielcarek, Slawomir Chmielewski
R2,673 Discovery Miles 26 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book focuses on control units, which are a vital part of modern digital systems, and responsible for the efficiency of controlled systems. The model of a finite state machine (FSM) is often used to represent the behavior of a control unit. As a rule, control units have irregular structures that make it impossible to design their logic circuits using the standard library cells. Design methods depend strongly on such factors as the FSM used, specific features of the logic elements implemented in the FSM logic circuit, and the characteristics of the control algorithm to be interpreted. This book discusses Moore and Mealy FSMs implemented with FPGA chips, including look-up table elements (LUT) and embedded memory blocks (EMB). It is crucial to minimize the number of LUTs and EMBs in an FSM logic circuit, as well as to make the interconnections between the logic elements more regular, and various methods of structural decompositions can be used to solve this problem. These methods are reduced to the presentation of an FSM circuit as a composition of different logic blocks, the majority of which implement systems of intermediate logic functions different (and much simpler) than input memory functions and FSM output functions. The structural decomposition results in multilevel FSM circuits having fewer logic elements than equivalent single-level circuits. The book describes well-known methods of structural decomposition and proposes new ones, examining their impact on the final amount of hardware in an FSM circuit. It is of interest to students and postgraduates in the area of Computer Science, as well as experts involved in designing digital systems with complex control units. The proposed models and design methods open new possibilities for creating logic circuits of control units with an optimal amount of hardware and regular interconnections.

The BOXES Methodology Second Edition - Black Box Control of Ill-defined Systems (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2022): David W. Russell The BOXES Methodology Second Edition - Black Box Control of Ill-defined Systems (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2022)
David W. Russell
R3,996 Discovery Miles 39 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on how the BOXES Methodology, which is based on the work of Donald Michie, is applied to ill-defined real-time control systems with minimal a priori knowledge of the system. The method is applied to a variety of systems including the familiar pole and cart. This second edition includes a new section that covers some further observations and thoughts, problems, and evolutionary extensions that the reader will find useful in their own implementation of the method. This second edition includes a new section on how to handle jittering about a system boundary which in turn causes replicated run times to become part of the learning mechanism. It also addresses the aging of data values using a forgetfulness factor that causes wrong values of merit to be calculated. Another question that is addressed is "Should a BOXES cell ever be considered fully trained and, if so, excluded from further dynamic updates". Finally, it expands on how system boundaries may be shifted using data from many runs using an evolutionary paradigm.

Traffic Congestion Control by PDE Backstepping (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Huan Yu, Miroslav Krstic Traffic Congestion Control by PDE Backstepping (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Huan Yu, Miroslav Krstic
R3,681 Discovery Miles 36 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph explores the design of controllers that suppress oscillations and instabilities in congested traffic flow using PDE backstepping methods. The first part of the text is concerned with basic backstepping control of freeway traffic using the Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) second-order PDE model. It begins by illustrating a basic control problem - suppressing traffic with stop-and-go oscillations downstream of ramp metering - before turning to the more challenging case for traffic upstream of ramp metering. The authors demonstrate how to design state observers for the purpose of stabilization using output-feedback control. Experimental traffic data are then used to calibrate the ARZ model and validate the boundary observer design. Because large uncertainties may arise in traffic models, adaptive control and reinforcement learning methods are also explored in detail. Part II then extends the conventional ARZ model utilized until this point in order to address more complex traffic conditions: multi-lane traffic, multi-class traffic, networks of freeway segments, and driver use of routing apps. The final chapters demonstrate the use of the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) first-order PDE model to regulate congestion in traffic flows and to optimize flow through a bottleneck. In order to make the text self-contained, an introduction to the PDE backstepping method for systems of coupled first-order hyperbolic PDEs is included. Traffic Congestion Control by PDE Backstepping is ideal for control theorists working on control of systems modeled by PDEs and for traffic engineers and applied scientists working on unsteady traffic flows. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers interested in boundary control of coupled systems of first-order hyperbolic PDEs.
