Waterman is the first comprehensive biography of Duke Kahanamoku
(1890-1968): swimmer, surfer, Olympic gold medalist, Hawaiian icon,
waterman. Long before Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz made their
splashes in the pool, Kahanamoku emerged from the backwaters of
Waikiki to become America's first superstar Olympic swimmer. The
original "human fish" set dozens of world records and topped the
world rankings for more than a decade; his rivalry with Johnny
Weissmuller transformed competitive swimming from an insignificant
sideshow into a headliner event. Kahanamoku used his Olympic renown
to introduce the sport of "surf-riding," an activity unknown beyond
the Hawaiian Islands, to the world. Standing proudly on his
traditional wooden longboard, he spread surfing from Australia to
the Hollywood crowd in California to New Jersey. No American
athlete has influenced two sports as profoundly as Kahanamoku did,
and yet he remains an enigmatic and underappreciated figure: a
dark-skinned Pacific Islander who encountered and overcame racism
and ignorance long before the likes of Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, and
Jackie Robinson. Kahanamoku's connection to his homeland was
equally important. He was born when Hawaii was an independent
kingdom; he served as the sheriff of Honolulu during Pearl Harbor
and World War II and as a globetrotting "Ambassador of Aloha"
afterward; he died not long after Hawaii attained statehood. As one
sportswriter put it, Duke was "Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey combined
down here." In Waterman, award-winning journalist David Davis
examines the remarkable life of Duke Kahanamoku, in and out of the
water.

how to increase your RMR (resting metabolic rate) to accelerate
your metabolism and help you change your body for good. Learn how
to get in top shape and reach your ideal weight through smart
nutrition so that you can perform at your very best. Eating complex
carbohydrates, protein, and natural fats in the right amount and
percentages as well as increasing your RMR will make you faster,
more agile, and more resistant. This book will help you to:
-Prevent dehydration. -Prevent getting cramps. -Get tired less.
-Recover faster after competing or training. -Have more energy
before, during, and after competition. By eating right and
improving the way you feed your body you will also reduce injuries
and be less prone to them in the future. Being too thick or too
thin are two common reasons injuries happen and is the main reason
most athletes have trouble reaching their peak performance. Three
nutrition plan options are explained in detail. You can choose
which one is best for you depending on your overall physical
condition. One of the first changes most people who start this
nutrition plan see is endurance. They get less tired and have more
energy. Any athlete who wants to be in the best shape ever needs to
read this book and start making long term changes that will get
them where they want to be. No matter where you are right now or
what you're doing, you can always improve yourself. Joseph Correa

"This book is as autobiographical as it is biographical . . . a
book that juxtaposes two adventurers, one with her own challenges
still unfolding and the other with his position fixed in history .
. . a book worthy of the centenary celebration of Amundsen's trek
to the South Pole."--"San Francisco Chronicle"
Today the North and South Poles are home to research stations and
film crews, but just a century ago they were forbidding lands
seldom seen by human eyes. Those who journeyed there were the last
true explorers, and one of the most successful ever was Roald
Amundsen. Known as "the last of the Vikings," the Norwegian-born
Amundsen began his career of adventure at age fifteen and by forty
had become the first man to successfully navigate the Northwest
Passage, and to reach both the North and South Poles.
As a girl, Lynne Cox read of Amundsen's exploits, which inspired
her to follow her own adventurous dreams of open-water swimming.
Here, she gives an account of Amundsen's life and expeditions while
detailing her own experiences swimming (without a wetsuit) in the
same polar regions he first explored. At once a biography, history,
and memoir, "South with the Sun "holds something for any lover of
adventure.
"Not to miss . . . It's fascinating to read about the Norwegian
hardman through the eyes of Cox."--"Outside"

PLEASE NOTE: THIS BOOK IS A COMPILATION OF MARK'S FOUR BOOKS "HOW
TO SWIM FRONT CRAWL, BACKSTROKE, BREASTSTROKE AND BUTTERFLY"
Learning how to swim can be a frustrating experience sometimes,
especially for an adult. Kick with your legs, pull with your arms,
breathe in, and breathe out and do it all at the right time. Before
you know it you've got a hundred and one things to think about and
do all at the same time or in the right sequence. The Swimming
Strokes Book is designed to break each stroke down into its
component parts, those parts being body position, legs, arms,
breathing and timing and coordination. An exercise or series of
exercises are then assigned to that part along with relevant
teaching points and technique tips, to help focus only on that
stroke part. Although it is not the same as having a swimming
teacher with you to correct you, this book perfectly compliments
lessons or helps to enhance your practice time in the pool. The 82
exercises form reference sections for each swimming stroke,
complete with technique tips, teaching points and common mistakes
for each individual exercise. Clear, concise and easy-to-follow.

Have you ever jumped in a pool, splashed a swimmer, and gotten the
evil eye? This book is a collection of hilarious true examples of
the quirks and odd behaviors of swimmers from the perspective of a
lifeguard. Also included are stories of patron fights, swimwear,
and other funny and disgusting things that have happened while I
was lifeguarding.
This book contains a selection of workouts from an experienced
master swimmer. It is intended for those who want to keep in shape
and possibly compete in USMS Nationals like its author. If you are
over 40, fit and disciplined, yet have no more than two hours a day
to spare, often less, sometimes every other day, and if you believe
yourself to be sufficiently fit and disciplined to improve and
compete, the book is for you. This book contains basic advice on
workout planning, cycling, as well as basics of nutrition,
stretching and dry exercise routines. Its main purpose, however,
was to collecti swimming workouts and sort them out into macrocycle
periods, in order to make your pool time more productive and
enjoyable. These routines are intentionally printed in larger
letters, one per page, so that you can copy them and take them with
you to the pool. Sarah P. Condor-Fisher is a former Olympic
swimmer, coach, personal trainer and nutritional analyst.
A step-by-step guide to swimming the "impossible" including
training, notes about cold water, the trip to San Francisco, and
how to make your swim a success.
