Valentina Morgana, Agnes Kukulska Hulme
R661 Discovery Miles 6 610 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This concise collection critically reflects on mobile assisted language learning research across educational stages, from early childhood through to university settings. // The volume traces the development of MALL practices through researchers' and teachers' efforts to make sense of the impact of mobile technologies on formal and informal second language learning and development. The chapters explore a range of topics around mobile learning design, implementation, and affordances across different educational and geographic contexts, drawing on both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. In so doing, the book creates a broader conversation around the importance of continuity in the successful integration of MALL practices into L2 learning curricula across the educational lifespan. // This book will appeal to students and scholars in applied linguistics and language teaching and learning, especially to those with a specific interest in mobile technologies.

Images of Crisis (Routledge Revivals) - Literary Iconology, 1750 to the Present (Hardcover): George P. Landow Images of Crisis (Routledge Revivals) - Literary Iconology, 1750 to the Present (Hardcover)
George P. Landow
R4,297 Discovery Miles 42 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1982, Images of Crisis explores the premise that literature and art exploit various images to present culturally prevalent ideas, and thus create their own form of iconology. George Landow shows how the tumultuous history of the past two hundred years has resulted in a plethora of metaphors associated with moments of human crisis. Avalanches and volcanoes emerge as focal images in an aesthetic that concerns itself increasingly with the vulnerability of humanity. However, it is in the transformation of traditional religious images that the ideas of the vacant universe are most dramatically presented. Associated with this central idea are ironic transformations of other images that formerly had been associated with Christianity as paradigms of belief: the journey of Odysseus, the rainbow of the Covenant and Robinson Crusoe. Combining close textual analysis with a theory of literary iconology, this fascinating reissue will be of particular value to students with an interest in literary images, and literary and cultural history.

Ferdinand de Saussure (Hardcover, New): John Joseph Ferdinand de Saussure (Hardcover, New)
John Joseph
R29,454 Discovery Miles 294 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) is widely recognized as the founder of twentieth-century language science. In his lifetime he published an important work on Indo-European philology but it was his Course in General Linguistics, published posthumously in 1916, that paved the way for a genuinely scientific theory of language based on a system of mutually defining entities. In addition to laying the foundations for many of the significant developments in modern linguistics, the implications of Saussure's work have been far reaching across a broad range of disciplines beyond language studies; indeed, his projected science of signs effected a fundamental reconceptualization of our knowledge about all socially organized meaning systems and it has had a profound impact on, for example, the evolution of modern sociology, anthropology, film studies, and literary theory. As serious work on Saussure's thinking and influence continues to flourish, this long-awaited new title in Routledge's Critical Assessments of Leading Linguists series meets the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of a vast scholarly literature. Edited by John E. Joseph, author of the first full-length and comprehensive biography of Saussure, this four-volume Major Work brings together the best and most influential English-language Saussurean secondary literature. (It also makes available in translation several key pieces originally published in languages other than English.) The collection includes: work on Saussure's precursors; comprehensive coverage of his linguistic theory, his key concepts, and their critical reception, especially in Europe and the USA; critiques of Saussure (including reassessments and refinements prompted by the unearthing in 1996 of a manuscript published as his Writings in General Linguistics); full coverage of Saussure's 'rediscovery' in the 1960s and his significance in the rise of structuralism, as well as his influence on the broader poststructuralist approaches to inquiry in the human sciences that followed. Ferdinand de Saussure is fully indexed and has a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. It is an essential work of reference and is destined to be valued by scholars and students as a vital one-stop research and pedagogic resource.

Textual Distortion (Hardcover): Elaine Treharne, Greg Walker Textual Distortion (Hardcover)
Elaine Treharne, Greg Walker; Contributions by Aaron Kelly, Claude Willan, Dan Kim, …
R1,204 Discovery Miles 12 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The notion of what it means to "distort" a text is here explored through a rich variety of individual case studies. Distortion is nearly always understood as negative. It can be defined as perversion, impairment, caricature, corruption, misrepresentation, or deviation. Unlike its close neighbour, "disruption", it remains resolutely associatedwith the undesirable, the lost, or the deceptive. Yet it is also part of a larger knowledge system, filling the gap between the authentic event and its experience; it has its own ethics and practice, and it is necessarily incorporated in all meaningful communication. Need it always be a negative phenomenon? How does distortion affect producers, transmitters and receivers of texts? Are we always obliged to acknowledge distortion? What effect does a distortive process have on the intentionality, materiality and functionality, not to say the cultural, intellectual and market value, of all textual objects? The essays in this volume seek to address these questions,They range fromthe medieval through the early modern to contemporary periods and, throughout, deliberately challenge periodisation and the canonical. Topics treated include Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, Reformation documents and poems, Global Shakespeare, the Oxford English Dictionary, Native American spiritual objects, and digital tools for re-envisioning textual relationships. From the written to the spoken, the inhabited object to the remediated, distortion is demonstrated to demand a rich and provocative mode of analysis. Elaine Treharne is Roberta Bowman Denning Professor of Humanities, Professor of English, Director of the Centre for Spatial and Textual Analysis, and Director of Stanford Technologies at Stanford University; Greg Walker is Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. Contributors: Matthew Aiello, Emma Cayley, Aaron Kelly, Daeyeong (Dan) Kim, Sarah Ogilvie, Timothy Powell, Giovanni Scorcioni, Greg Walker, Claude Willan.

Disrupting Chinese Journalism - Changing Politics, Economics, and Journalistic Practices of the Legacy Newspaper Press... Disrupting Chinese Journalism - Changing Politics, Economics, and Journalistic Practices of the Legacy Newspaper Press (Hardcover)
Haiyan Wang
R1,442 Discovery Miles 14 420 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Disrupting Chinese Journalism provides a rich insight into the disruptive effects of digital technologies - especially smart-phones - on the Chinese print media market. Pulling from an extensive corpus of original research, including 191 face-to-face interviews with managers and journalists, and a content analysis of some 4,000 news reports, Haiyan Wang examines how Chinese legacy newspapers have responded to the changing digital media environment, including by adapting their organizational structures, revenue models, and journalistic practices. This book also points to how the government has taken a more interventionist stance on editorial content, and how this has further complicated the digital transitions of the Chinese media. This book is an invaluable resource for students of media studies, journalism, Chinese area studies, and digital technology.

Egyptian Language (Routledge Revivals) - Easy Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphics (Hardcover): E.A. Budge Egyptian Language (Routledge Revivals) - Easy Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphics (Hardcover)
E.A. Budge
R4,297 Discovery Miles 42 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sir E. A. Wallis Budge (1857-1934) was Keeper of the British Museum's department of oriental antiquities from 1894 until his retirement in 1924. Carrying out many missions to Egypt in search of ancient objects, Budge was hugely successful in collecting papyri, statues and other artefacts for the trustees of the British Museum: numbering into the thousands and of great cultural and historical significance. Budge published well over 100 monographs, which shaped the development of future scholarship and are still of great academic value today, dealing with subjects such as Egyptian religion, history and literature. The ancient Egyptians expressed their ideas in writing by means of hieroglyphics, which they used uninterruptedly until the end of the rule of the Ptolemies. Evidence indicates that the hieroglyphic system of writing was brought to Egypt by invaders from north-east or central Asia; they settled somewhere between Memphis on the north and Thebes on the south, and gradually established their civilization, religion and methods of communication. First published in 1910, Egyptian Language provides a simple introduction to the study of Egyptian hieroglyphic inscriptions. Including an account of the decipherment of the hieroglyphic system and the general principles which underlie it, as well as the main facts of ancient Egyptian grammar and illustrative extracts, the book will be of value to students and academics of ancient Egyptian language and culture.

A Framework for Critical Transnational Research - Advancing Plurilingual, Intercultural, and Inter-epistemic Collaboration in... A Framework for Critical Transnational Research - Advancing Plurilingual, Intercultural, and Inter-epistemic Collaboration in the Academy (Hardcover)
Manuela Guilherme
R4,067 Discovery Miles 40 670 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

By foregrounding successful transnational research projects conducted across Latin America and Europe, this edited collection contests epistemological hegemony and heterogeneity in the academy and highlights feasible models for research cooperation across diverse languages, cultures, and epistemologies. Chapters focus on the practical and theoretical tenets of responsible intra-national research and propose the "Glocacademia" framework as a means of enhancing critical reflection on issues that can inhibit plurilingual, intercultural, and inter-epistemic research. The text offers key recommendations to support institutions and researchers to develop intercultural awareness, multi-level citizenship, and a readiness to embrace diverse knowledge ecologies. The book builds on existing discussions on multiculturalism, interculturality, and transculturality to offer high academic value to the discussion of higher education and research. Offering important contributions to the study of global academic research, this volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers with an interest in international and comparative education, as well as multicultural studies in education research.

Migration, Family and the Welfare State - Integrating Migrants and Refugees in Scandinavia (Hardcover): Karen Fog Olwig,... Migration, Family and the Welfare State - Integrating Migrants and Refugees in Scandinavia (Hardcover)
Karen Fog Olwig, Birgitte Romme Larsen, Mikkel Rytter
R4,287 Discovery Miles 42 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Migration, Family and the Welfare State explores understandings and practices of integration in the Scandinavian welfare societies of Denmark, Norway and Sweden through a comprehensive range of detailed ethnographic studies. Chapters examine discourses, policies and programs of integration in the three receiving societies, studying how these are experienced by migrant and refugee families as they seek to realize the hopes and ambitions for a better life that led them to leave their country of origin. The three Scandinavian countries have had parallel histories as welfare societies receiving increasing numbers of migrants and refugees after World War II, and yet they have reacted in dissimilar ways to the presence of foreigners, with Denmark developing tough immigration policies and nationalist integration requirements, Sweden asserting itself as a relatively open country with an official multicultural policy, and Norway taking a middle position. The book analyses the impact of these differences and similarities on immigrants, refugees and their descendants across three intersecting themes: integration as a welfare state project; integration as political discourse and practice; and integration as immigrants and refugees quest for improvement and belonging.

This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Cognitive Linguistics (Hardcover): Adele Goldberg Cognitive Linguistics (Hardcover)
Adele Goldberg
R46,745 Discovery Miles 467 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new addition to Routledge's Major Works series, Critical Concepts in Linguistics, brings together the very best and most influential scholarly research on cognitive linguistics. Cognitive Linguistics is a broad approach to language that places psychological reality at the top of the list of theoretical desiderata. Both experimental and theoretical work will be included in each volume. The fact that language is a system of communication is emphasized, so that explanations that rely on the functions of linguistic elements are preferred over purely syntactic accounts. The label, "Cognitive Linguistics," arose in the 1980s with Langacker, Lakoff, Fillmore, and Talmy laying the semantic/pragmatic foundations for the approach. Volume I will be dedicated to key works by these authors and others. Volume II further explores semantic foundations with papers on metaphor, blending and embodiment. Cognitive Linguistics encompasses approaches to phonology, morphology, grammar, and discourse, but the emphasis has been on morphology and grammar. Work has coalesced around the idea that form-function pairings (constructions, schemata) are the basic units of language. Volumes III and IV include seminal works in this area. A strength of Cognitive Linguistics is that it interfaces naturally with a great deal of work in language acquisition, language evolution, and language change. Selected papers from these topics that make explicit use of key ideas in Cognitive Linguistics will be included in Volume V. With a new introduction by the editor and a comprehensive index, this five volume collection will be a convenient and authoritative reference resource on cognitive linguistics for both student and scholar.

Family Language Policy in the Polish Diaspora - A Focus on Australia (Paperback): Piotr Romanowski Family Language Policy in the Polish Diaspora - A Focus on Australia (Paperback)
Piotr Romanowski
R1,211 Discovery Miles 12 110 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book explores language practices, beliefs and management across a group of Polish immigrant families in Australia, drawing on these case studies as a lens through which to unpack dynamics of Family Language Policy (FLP) and their implications for future research on FLP. The volume begins by outlining the historical context of Polish immigration in Australia, charting two key waves of Polish migration in the 20th century and the subsequent unfolding of issues around language and culture maintenance in these families. This discussion paves the way for exploring key themes of language socialization, language ideologies and heritage language maintenance and the affordances of FLP research in elucidating these dynamics at work in the lived experiences of a group of Polish immigrant families in Melbourne. The book highlights the importance of a triangulated approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative methods, in offering nuanced insights into parental approaches and children's experiences of a bilingual upbringing and the wider impact of FLP on transnational families. Opening up avenues for future research on Family Language Policy and a better understanding of the language practices of specific communities in a globalised world, this book will be of interest to scholars in multilingualism, sociolinguistics and applied linguistics.

Developing Cross-Cultural Relational Ability in Foreign Language Learning - Asset-Based Pedagogy to Enhance Pragmatic... Developing Cross-Cultural Relational Ability in Foreign Language Learning - Asset-Based Pedagogy to Enhance Pragmatic Competence (Paperback)
Gerrard Mugford
R1,171 Discovery Miles 11 710 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

By reconceptualizing successful communication in a foreign language as an enjoyable and uplifting experience, this volume moves beyond a focus on grammatical accuracy and fluency to foreground the ways in which foreign language learners can be encouraged to build on previous achievements and communicative successes in the target language and so develop confidence, commitment and cross-cultural relational ability. Building on Mugford's previous volume, Addressing Difficult Situations in Foreign-Language Learning (2019), this text draws on grounded qualitative data collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and conversations with Spanish-speaking learners of English, to illustrate how learners' experiences and insights can be used to inform a productive pedagogy centred around language users' communicative objectives and interactional successes. Chapters highlight bilingual speakers' conscious language use, practices and choices in the target language and the reasons and implications for such deliberate communicative practices and relational behaviour. In doing so, Mugford is able to outline a critical relational pedagogy designed to better equip language learners with the confidence and pragmatic resources they require to engage in positive cross-cultural relational work. As a valuable, student-centred contribution to teaching and learning of modern foreign languages, this volume will be key reading for researchers, scholars and educators with an interest in language education, TESOL, World Language teaching and Applied Linguistics.

A Conspiracy of Ravens - A Compendium of Collective Nouns for Birds (Hardcover): Bill Oddie A Conspiracy of Ravens - A Compendium of Collective Nouns for Birds (Hardcover)
Bill Oddie; Illustrated by Thomas Bewick
R308 R259 Discovery Miles 2 590 Save R49 (16%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'A murder of crows', 'a charm of goldfinches', 'an ostentation of peacocks': collective nouns for British birds have existed since at least the mid fifteenth century. They are thought to originate in texts about hunting, but have since evolved into evocative, witty and literary expressions, each striving to capture the very essence of the animal they describe. Some are portentous - 'a conspiracy of ravens' perfectly evokes this sinister bird - others convey sound, such as 'a murmuration of starlings' or 'a chattering of choughs'. Yet more reflect with a flourish the beauty of the bird itself: what could be more celebratory than 'a crown of kingfishers', or 'an exaltation of larks'? The best of these imaginative expressions are collected here, illustrated with charming woodcuts by Thomas Bewick, the renowned naturalist engraver of the eighteenth century. Featuring songbirds, aquatic birds, birds of prey and garden favourites, this beautifully presented book will delight both bird-lovers and word-lovers in equal measure.

Writing STEAM - Composition, STEM, and a New Humanities (Paperback): Vivian Kao, Julia Kiernan Writing STEAM - Composition, STEM, and a New Humanities (Paperback)
Vivian Kao, Julia Kiernan
R1,182 Discovery Miles 11 820 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This edited collection positions writing at the center of interdisciplinary higher education, and explores how writing instruction, writing scholarship, and writing program administration bring STEM and the humanities together in meaningful, creative, and beneficial ways. Writing professionals are at the forefront of a cross-pollination between STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and the arts and humanities. In their work as educators, scholars, and administrators, they collaborate with colleagues in engineering, scientific, technical, and health disciplines, offer new degree programs that allow students to bring the humanities to bear on design experiments, and build an academic culture that promotes a vision of the humanities in the twenty-first century, as well as a vision of technology that is decidedly human. This collection surveys and promotes that work through chapters focused on writing instruction, writing scholarship, and writing program administration, covering topics that include data-driven writing courses, public science communication, non-traditional college students, creative writing, gamification, skills transfer, and Writing Across the Curriculum programs. Writing STEAM will be essential reading for scholars, instructors, and administrators in writing studies, rhetoric and composition, STEM, and a variety of interdisciplinary programs; it will aid in teacher training for both humanities and STEM courses focused on writing and communication.
