People have been using tobacco in a variety of forms for centuries.
Remarkably, it was originally seen as something that could promote
vigor and health. Of course, now we all know that tobacco use
causes death and disability in epidemic proportions. If smoking is
so bad for us, why in heaven’s name would anyone still smoke?
Quite a bit has changed since tobacco first made the transition to
a widely available agricultural product. Unfortunately, the general
clinical approach to addressing this problem has failed to keep
pace with tobacco technology and its addictive properties. People
around the world who have fallen prey to the subtleties of nicotine
addiction, or who care for those who have, would benefit from a
deeper understanding of the ways in which nicotine can affect the
brain’s function and change behaviors over a lifetime. Why People
Smoke breaks down the science of tobacco dependence and presents it
in a way that is both easily understandable and clinically useful
for anyone interested in helping people break free of nicotine’s
influence. Why People Smoke is a first-of-its-kind clinical guide
to treating tobacco dependence. The book helps readers make
meaningful connections between tobacco’s effects at the cellular
level, the predictable behavioral manifestations of the disorder,
and the social science and systems requirements required to make a
fundamental impact on this disorder. Unlike previous publications
like self-help books, step-by-step curricula, or clinical
guidelines, Why People Smoke puts practical clinical
insights—gained from twenty-five years of practice—into
perspective, helping the reader understand how “brain change”
translates into “mind change” and the persistent compulsion to
smoke . . . despite a person’s desperate desire to stop. Reading
Why People Smoke will change the way you see smoking forever.
A breakthrough solution from the author of This Naked Mind Alcohol
to help shift your mindset and help you quit smoking for good.
Tobacco is bad for us; that's a given. But even though you may know
the negative health effects, nicotine's hold is strong,
subconscious, and emotional: It tastes good, it's a companion when
you're alone, and it can be a shield against stress. What if none
of these things were true, though? What if nicotine actually tasted
bad and didn't make you less lonely? What if it didn't relax you?
It may seem hard to believe, and it's okay to be skeptical, but
coming to a new mindset about smoking is the key to quitting. In
This Naked Mind: Nicotine, Annie Grace and William Porter combine
their trusted approaches to overcoming problem
drinking-science-backed, habit-breaking systems that have worked
for thousands-to vanquish tobacco addiction. Grace and Porter
uncover the subconscious beliefs about smoking that keep us
addicted to it despite its well-known costs. With thought-provoking
questions and exercises that will spark clarity, this essential
book will help you jump-start your no-smoking journey easily and
heal your brain and body.
This book constitutes a major new resource for professionals
working with hard core smokers and their families. It is designed
as a practical, clinically useful and up-to-date guide for all
those in a position to intervene: mental health professionals,
physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and other health care
professionals, clergy, human resource and employee assistance
program corporate staff, and teachers and guidance
counselors.
New research suggests that difficult-to-treat smokers often have
emotional problems adjusting to stopping smoking. Some also have
psychiatric diagnoses or abuse other substances. These are factors
which interfere with their efforts to quit.
Because these difficulties have been poorly understood, hard-core
smokers have not been provided with adequate resources and skills
to overcome their addiction. These smokers are in need of
increasingly comprehensive assessment and treatment.
Despite massive public health education about the dangers of
cigarette smoking, rates of smoking among the population are no
longer declining in the United States and the success rates of
clinical programs for smokers remain low. "Helping the Hard-Core
Smoker" seeks to explain why current approaches are often
inadequate and how best to help today's highly nicotine-dependent
smokers who are struggling with their addiction quit.
A guide to freeing ourselves from the inappropriate and crippling behaviors that sabotage our success.

The "Report on Smoking and Health" published by the Royal
College of Physicians in England in 1965 warned of a connection
between lung -cancer and smoking. The findings were widely
publicized, and were accepted by practically every-one-indeed, they
persist today. As Hans J. Eysenck shows in his classic study
"Smoking, Health, and Personality," the results were by no means
immune to challenge. Not only were the experimental and statistical
methods employed vulnerable to criticism, but the results were open
to more than one interpretation.
In this new edition, Stuart Brody reviews Eysenck's achievement.
Eysenck critically reviewed the literature, presented longitudinal
studies showing that psychological characteristics are far more
potent predictors of heart disease and cancer than smoking
behavior, and demonstrated that psychological treatment can halve
death rates. Eysenck also spoke the unspeakable, iconoclastically
attacking the cherished attribution of millions of deaths to
smoking. He examined the interaction of smoking with personality
and constitutional factors, and the connection between these
factors and the development of cancer. Eysenck saw the
cause-and-effect relation between cancer and smoking as
oversimplification. He also makes a number of practical suggestions
for the kind of social action that could be taken to decrease the
incidence of lung cancer. For his part, Brody notes that massive
campaigns which exhort people to eschew tobacco or cholesterol have
had little or no demonstrable health benefits.
This original and stimulating volume is written with great
clarity and is easily understood by the layman. It is an incisive
account of one of the most important social problems in this
country today, and a challenge to orthodoxy in the medical world.
As such, this volume offers much for both sides of the anti-smoking
lobby, as well as those in the fields of psychology, political
science, and sociology. .

The millions of people who smoke know that the ritual of smoke
breaks is relaxing and comforting-almost as addictive as the
nicotine itself. Those who make the decision to quit this unhealthy
and expensive habit do not only have their nicotine addiction to
contend with, but also lose the relaxing breaks that may help them
keep perspective throughout the day. Due to this twofold loss, many
people fail to maintain a smoke-free lifestyle, or go years without
smoking only to pick up a cigarette when a particularly stressful
situation leaves them desperate for a way to cope. In The
Smoke-Free Smoke Break, Pavel Somov and Marla Somova present a
gradual plan for quitting smoking once and for all by keeping the
smoke breaks, but replacing the tobacco with mindfulness exercises
and positive reinforcement techniques that work as well or better
than cigarettes for calming and soothing readers in stressful
times. First, readers practice mindful smoking to increase their
present-moment awareness while using cigarettes. Then readers work
on cutting down nicotine use, incorporating nicotine patches and
other quitting devices, if they choose. Finally, readers quit
nicotine entirely, while keeping the mindfulness exercises and
breaks as part of their daily routine. The authors have used this
program successfully with many smokers and have found that the key
component of this program-teaching smokers methods for coping
withdrawal before they quit-is essential to the success of the
smoke-free smoke break method.
A self-hypnosis experimental smoking cessation programme that
assists smokers in quitting the habit.
