Our immune system is a complex network of cells continually battling against a barrage of attacks from our environment, quite literally to save our lives. But what protects us from the potentially life-threatening microorganisms that surround us every day? In the lucid, accessible style for which John Playfair is renowned, and together with Greg Bancroft, an expert in infectious diseases, Infection and Immunity explains how our immune system defends us. The authors describe the main causes of infection that our bodies have to battle against - from bacteria to viruses, fungi to protozoa - and explains the intricate and fascinating ways in which we respond, from detection of potentially dangerous organisms to their ultimate elimination - sometimes, unfortunately, suffering new pathological symptoms in the process. Presenting a fully-rounded, well-balanced overview of the field, the book also explains how diseases spread, and what measures we can take to control this spread - from vaccination to increasing awareness through public health initiatives. With examples of infectious diseases from across the world, Infection and Immunity is the ideal text for biomedical science, bioscience, and microbiology students who need to understand the basics of what causes infection, and how our immune systems respond. Online Resource Centre The Online Resource Centre to acompany the book features: For students: * Multiple choice questions to check your understanding as you progress through the text For registered adopters of the book: * Figures from the book, ready to download
This book describes both the technologies used in the discovery of melanoma biomarkers and the clinical application of these biomarkers for diagnosis and staging of disease, determination of prognosis, treatment planning, monitoring of response to therapy, identification of novel therapeutic targets and drug development. A broad range of biomarkers (DNA/chromosomal, mRNA, microRNA, mitochondrial DNA, epigenetic and protein) is outlined. As therapies for melanoma become increasingly more target specific, the identification, validation and use of biomarkers will invariably play a greater role in the management of patients with this disease. Diagnostic and Prognostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Melanoma is an essential resource for oncologists, dermatologists, dermatopathologists, general pathologists with an interest in melanoma, and melanoma researchers.
In this greatly enlarged and thoroughly updated edition of his much praised Cardiac Markers, Alan Wu and his contributors focus on the use of markers in the practice of cardiology and-for the first time-on the use of natriuretic peptides for congestive heart failure. Here, leading international authorities in clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine, cardiology, emergency medicine, and the in vitro diagnostics industry describe the state-of-the-art uses of cardiac markers when treating coronary artery disease, and discuss in detail how they may be optimally used in a clinical setting. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, Cardiac Markers, Second Edition offers physicians a complete guide to the use of cardiac markers in clinical practice and clinical laboratorians a close-up view of the new markers now becoming standard.
Frozen sections are performed while a patient is undergoing surgery as a basis for making an immediate diagnosis that will impact treatment decisions. Frozen section diagnosis is often a highly demanding situation for the pathologist who must render a diagnosis quickly, based on careful gross examination of specimens to select optimal areas for microscopic examination. The Frozen Section Library series will provide concise, user-friendly, site specific handbooks that are well illustrated and highlight the pitfalls, artifacts and differential diagnosis issues that arise in the hurried frozen section scenario. Donna M. Coffey, M.D., is Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas and Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, New York. Ibrahim Ramzy, M.D., is Professor of Pathology - Laboratory Medicine & Obstetrics-Gynecology, University of California, Irvine, California and Adjunct Professor of Pathology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.
The first edition of The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology introduced a completely new paradigm for detecting bladder cancer by urine cytology. This system concentrated on defining morphological characteristics of the most clinically significant form of bladder cancer, High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. This new approach has been widely accepted throughout the world, and has become part of the daily practice of cytology. Considering that the first edition of The Paris System (TPS) introduced a new model of urinary cytodiagnosis, verification and expansion of initial material and data were anticipated. Based on evolving knowledge and readership requests, the group of highly experienced authors have created a new edition of TPS. This second edition includes areas and issues not originally covered. A new chapter on urine cytology of the upper tract, a rarely addressed topic, has been introduced. Furthermore, the issue of cellular degeneration is discussed in the criteria of all diagnostic categories. Examples of standardized reports are included in each chapter. Most importantly, a separate chapter presents data defining the risk of malignancy (ROM) for each diagnostic category to inform clinical management. New high quality images augment those of the first edition to better illustrate diagnostic clues and potential pitfalls. In addition to chapters on diagnostic criteria, current concepts of pathogenesis of bladder cancer, specimen adequacy and preparation, and ancillary tests are covered in separate chapters. A bonus to the volume is a comprehensive history of urine as the earliest diagnostic sample of human disease, richly illustrated with artworks from major museums. Written by internationally recognized authorities, this comprehensive and evidence-based guide to urine cytology is supported by the newest data confirming the original concept and significance of diagnostic criteria defining High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. TPS is an essential tool for anyone who is practicing urinary cytology, including cytotechnologists, pathologists-in-training and practicing pathologists. This book should find a place in every cytology laboratory throughout the world. The Concept has been endorsed by the American Society of Cytopathology, and the International Academy of Cytology.
Forensic scientists apply scientific analysis in a legal context and play a vital role in solving crimes. Sometimes the collection of forensic evidence is the only way to establish or exclude an association between suspect and victim or crime scene, or to establish a likely order of events. Profiting from recent scientific developments and the advancement of technological equipment, forensic science is a rapidly evolving discipline that encompasses many sciences and the law. This dictionary covers in over 1300 entries the key concepts within forensic science, including a wide array of relevant specialist terms from areas such as chemistry, biology, anthropology, art, engineering, firearms, toolmarks, trace evidence, crime scene investigation, case history, biographies of investigators and criminals, as well as forensic computing. Ranging from crime scene to fibers and fluorescence to RAM, this new dictionary is the most up-to-date of its kind and is international in scope. Entry-level web links to online resources are listed and regularly updated on a companion website, expanding the scope of the dictionary and pointing to more in-depth supplementary material. Many entries are complemented by case examples (Dr Crippen, Mary Ann Cotton, etc.), figures, and photographs, which makes this A to Z an ideal reference for students of forensic science, as well as professionals and those with an interest in forensics.
This book details the histologic clues in diagnosing the inflammatory dermatoses and neoplastic process of the vulva. The inflammatory dermatoses are divided into histologic patterns to aid recognition. Expert authors provide updates on ancillary techniques such as special stains, immunohistochemistry and chromogenic in situ hybridization when applicable. New advances in classifying squamous lesions as well as staging melanocytic lesions are outlined. They include the recent CAP/ASCCP (College of American Pathologists and the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology) lower anogenital squamous terminology for HPV-associated lesions and the 2009 AJCC (American Joint Committee on Cancer) staging system for melanoma. New advances in molecular findings and potential targeted therapy are discussed for the squamous, melanocytic, adnexal and soft tissue tumors whenever it is pertinent. Vulvar Pathology will be a useful diagnostic guide for general pathologists, pathology trainees, dermatopathologists, dermatologists, and gynecologic pathologists in rendering diagnoses in vulvar inflammatory dermatoses as well as melanocytic, squamous, adnexal, and soft tissue neoplasms of the vulva.
Frozen sections of the pancreas are performed to assess resectability, for tissue confirmation and to assess margins. The clinical implications of an accurate frozen section diagnosis are dramatic as far as type and extent of surgery performed. "Frozen Section of the Pancreas" will provide a concise pictorial compendium to facilitate intraoperative consultations on pancreas specimens. The book will be 5x8 and is estimated to be 200-250 pages with 100-150 color figures. This user-friendly handbook will be divided into chapters that emphasize the common questions a pathologist must answer on frozen section examination and will provide guidance for the differential diagnosis of various histologic patterns. The purpose of this book is to aid in the timely frozen section diagnosis of pancreatic lesions by using a broad array of illustrations, which would reinforce one's visual memory, and a condensed text, useful for rapid review of main diagnostic features. Currently, there is no other up-to-date, single-source reference specifically focused on frozen sections of the pancreas.

This manual treats both conceptual and practical aspects of gastrointestinal polyposis syndrome, which is characterized by dermatologic manifestations. The book offers both detailed and comprehensive analysis of the endoscopic findings achieved from 88 cases, which led to novel concepts and classification of the dermatologic manifestations according to distribution pattern, the thickness of mucosa, and intervening inflamed mucosa between polyps. The book also offers comparisons of the endoscopic features to pathological features. Abundant illustrations show the observations of the malignant lesions using special lights, such as NBI and BLI, to provide a comprehensive view of the Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) polyp. Atlas of Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome is essential guidance for gastroenterologists and pathologists who pursue the new diagnostic approach and treatment for CCS. It also attracts clinicians interested in the latest updates on this field and those who encountered the CCS patients with refractory to corticosteroid treatment. The risk of colorectal cancer in patients with CCS may increase because multiple inflammatory pseudopolyps make it more difficult to detect premalignant adenomas. Additionally, as endoscopy for GI disease becomes widespread in developing countries, the number of diagnosed patients will likely increase. Thus, it is crucial to have a broader understanding of the disease and the treatment strategy, and this book aims to simplify a complicated picture of the rare disease.
