Lung Pathology: A Consultative Atlas and its companion CD complement each other as a novel and substantive approach to teaching the complex elements of pulmonary pathology. They exhibit challenging yet exemplary cases of lung pathology to help the reader understand diagnostic elements of morphology and to work his or her way through tables of differential diagnoses. These cases have been drawn from a 20-yr file of more than 7000 referrals to Dr. Eugene Mark from pathologists throughout the world. This volume introduces the reader to an updated approach developed by Dr. Mark in the interpretation of pulmonary pathology. Principles of this diagnostic approach are illustrated by many challenging cases of human lung pathology, each of which is ill- trated in color on the companion CD. The CD is a presentation of images and descriptive text in the presentation of 263 complicated referral cases of human lung pathology, including both medical and surgical lung disease. The histology of each case is illustrated by three to nine (usually five) color images captured to a personal computer by a state-of-the-art digital camera (Advanced SPOT, Diagnostic Instruments, Inc. ), mounted on a Zeiss Axiophot microscope. These images are representative of the histology seen on the microscopic slides that were sent to Dr. Mark in consultation. The pathology captured by the images is described by the text from Dr. Mark's letters to the referring pathologists.

In 1910, Karl Jaspers wrote a seminal essay on morbid jealousy in which he laid the foundation for the psychopathological phenomenology that through his work and the work of Hans Gruhle and Kurt Schneider, among others, would become the hallmark of the Heidelberg school of psychiatry. In "General Psychopathology," his most important contribution to the Heidelberg school, Jaspers critiques the scientific aspirations of psychotherapy, arguing that in the realm of the human, the explanation of behavior through the observation of regularity and patterns in it ( "Erklarende Psychologie") must be supplemented by an understanding of the "meaning-relations" experienced by human beings ( "Verstehende Psychologie").
It was with great pleasure that I accepted Professor Wackenheim's invitation to write the preface of this most interesting monograph. During the international course on neuroradiology in Obernai, organized by Professor Wackenheim in 1978, an entire day was devoted to discussions about various aspects of stenosis of the lumbar vertebral canal. As Professor Wackenheim and his group, in particular Dr. E. Babin, had thorough. ly studied this field, it was an excellent occasion for the exchange of views through personal contact. Their support of basic views such as attributing the cause of stenosis to a developmental disturbance of growth of the neural element - the vertebral arc- and spontaneous agreement about essentials in classification and nomenclature facili tated this exchange. Reading the present monograph made me think back to 1949 when I wrote my first publication on stenosis of the lumbar vertebral canal in a French volume that com memorated my teacher in neurosurgery, Professor Clovis Vincent. During the following years it was impossible to publish a more detailed paper on the subject in international journals since their editorial boards did not believe in its occurrence. My first English papers were published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (1954, 1955), but it was only during the 1970s that this form of stenosis became more universally recog nized."

In this second edition of the Histological Typing of Skin Tumours, the concise format of the first edition has been maintained. The number of tumours described, however, has increased considerably, especially in the melanocytic, adnexal, fibrous tissue and lymphoid neoplasms. Care has been taken to avoid needless subclassification, with the aim of limiting the expansion of categories to those fulfilling demonstrable histological criteria. The commentaries remain succinct whilst including the major diagnostic points, with reference to relevant immunohistochemical features.More than 200 new illustrations are included. Close collaboration with the authors of the AFIP Atlas of Tumor Pathology on Melanocytic and Non-melanocytic Tumours of the Skin ensures a consistent approach to the classification of skin tumors
Squamous cell cancers of the head and neck (SCCHN), also known as head and neck cancers (HNC) encompass malignancies of the oral cavity, larynx, nasopharynx and pharynx, and are diagnosed in over 500,000 patients worldwide each year, accounting for 5% of all malignancies. It is estimated that approximately 50,000 patients develop head and neck cancer annually in the United States, of whom approximately 50% succumb to this cancer. For most cases of SCCHN, treatment is multimodal, often combining surgery or irradiation with chemotherapy; even successfully treated patients frequently experience durable and severe side effects. Improving cure rates and reducing chronic morbidity are urgent clinical needs for head and neck cancer. However, in contrast to cancer types such as breast or prostate that have been much studied and have well-defined biology, until recently, relatively few researchers investigated the molecular basis of HNC, making it difficult to design targeted treatments with better efficacy and less debilitating side effects. This volume will provide an overview of the factors contributing to disease pathogenesis, including the recognition of discrete molecular subtypes with distinct etiology, prognosis, and treatment response. This volume will familiarize the reader with the critical signaling pathways and oncogenic drivers for HNC. It will outline the differences between HPV-positive and HPV-negative disease, and how these differences affect treatment choice and outcome. The book will emphasize developments in the past five years, including the growing understanding of the genomic and epigenomic features of the disease based on analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data, and timely topics such as the analysis of HNC stem cell populations, non-coding mRNAs, and inflammatory response. It will address exciting new therapeutic approaches such as the use of immunotherapies to treat HNC patients. Overall, the book will provide the reader with current understanding of the biology and treatment of the disease, and describe timely questions that will guide future research aimed at controlling and curing this disease.
