As a result of being asked to give public lectures on the subject, the eminent physicist Oliver Lodge (1851 1940) published in 1892 a pioneering study of the protection of buildings, cables and telegraphic instruments from the devastation caused by lightning strikes. This work led him almost immediately to the discovery of electromagnetic wave transmission and ultimately to the development of a version of radio telegraphy. Lodge also saw that many of the current theories about the nature of lightning were seriously in error, and his investigations led to a number of significant changes in the design of lightning conductors and lightning guards. Some of the methods and procedures that Lodge advocated have since become standard practice. They are described with Lodge's characteristic flair and accompanied by a wealth of illustrations that give a fascinating insight into how contemporary scientists and engineers tackled this significant problem.
This book supports HVAC planners in reducing the cooling energy demand, improving the indoor environment and designing more cost-effective building concepts. High performance buildings have shown that it is possible to go clearly beyond the energy requirements of existing legislation and obtaining good thermal comfort. However, there is still a strong uncertainty in day-to-day practice due to the lack of legislative regulations for mixed-mode buildings which are neither only naturally ventilated nor fully air-conditioned, but use a mix of different low-energy cooling techniques. Based on the findings from monitoring campaigns (long-term measurements in combination with field studies on thermal comfort), simulation studies, and a comprehensive review on existing standards and guidelines, this book acts as a commonly accessible knowledge pool for passive and low-energy cooling techniques.
Focuses on the methods of solving incompressible flows, although flows with significant property change due to heat transfer are also covered. Covers turbulent flow simulation, unstructured mesh, and two-phase flows. Uses a practical approach for CFD to build a foundation for those planning to work on low-speed flows. Provides detailed steps of solving 1-D and 2-D flow examples and MATLAB (R) codes of important algorithms. Includes numerous real-word examples and worked problems.

A number of metrics for assessing human thermal response to climatic conditions have been proposed in scientific literature over the last decades. They aim at describing human thermal perception of the thermal environment to which an individual or a group of people is exposed. More recently, a new type of "discomfort index" has been proposed for describing, in a synthetic way, long-term phenomena. Starting from a systematic review of a number of long-term global discomfort indices, they are then contrasted and compared on a reference case study in order to identify their similarities and differences and strengths and weaknesses. Based on this analysis, a new short-term local discomfort index is proposed for the American Adaptive comfort model. Finally, a new and reliable long-term general discomfort index is presented. It is delivered in three versions and each of them is suitable to be respectively coupled with the Fanger, the European Adaptive and the American Adaptive comfort models.
Air conditioning boosts man's efficiency no less than his comfort. Air-conditioned homes, offices, and factories unmistakably raise human productivity and reduce absenteeism, turnover, mistakes, accidents and grievances, especially in summer. Accordingly, many employers every year cool workrooms and offices to raise summer profits. Employees in turn find cool homes enhancing not only comfort and prestige but also personal efficiency and income. With such economic impetus, low-cost summer cooling must irresistibly spread to all kinds of occupied buildings. Refrigeration provides our best cooling, serving well where people are closely spaced in well-constructed, shaded, and insulated structures. However, its first and operating costs bar it from our hottest commercial, industrial, and residential buildings. Fortunately, evaporative cooling is an economical substitute in many regions. First used in Southwest homes and businesses and in textile mills, it soon invaded other fields and climates. In 1946, six firms produced 200,000 evaporative coolers; in 1958, 25 firms produced 1,250,000, despite the phenomenal sale of refrigerating window air conditioners. Though clearly secondary to refrigeration, evaporative cooling is 60 to 80 percent is economical for moderate income groups and cheaper to buy and operate. Thus, it climates where summers are short. Moreover, it cheaply cools hot, thinly constructed mills, factories, workshops, foundries, powerhouses, farm buildings, canneries, etc., where refrigerated cooling is prohibitively expensive.

During the nineteenth century, Britain became the first gaslit
society, with electric lighting arriving in 1878. At the same time,
the British government significantly expanded its power to observe
and monitor its subjects. How did such enormous changes in the way
people saw and were seen affect Victorian culture? To answer that
question, Chris Otter mounts an ambitious history of illumination
and vision in Britain, drawing on extensive research into
everything from the science of perception and lighting technologies
to urban design and government administration. He explores how
light facilitated such practices as safe transportation and private
reading, as well as institutional efforts to collect knowledge. And
he contends that, contrary to presumptions that illumination helped
create a society controlled by intrusive surveillance, the new
radiance often led to greater personal freedom and was integral to
the development of modern liberal society.

Solar technologies are emerging as the sustainable technology of choice for those commissioning new buildings. Integrated photovoltaics offer huge potential for delivering renewable energy without generating harmful pollutants. Discussing current market conditions and the economics of this technology, the author balances the physics and engineering background of solar heating, cooling and building integrated photovoltaics with practical applications. A complete overview of solar technologies relevant to the built environment, this book
Solar Technologies for Buildings is an excellent reference for scientists, engineers, planners, researchers and students, involved in developing solar energy systems. Architects integrating solar technologies in building design will find this application-orientated approach useful.
The use of solar collectors for domestic hot water over the past 20 years has demonstrated that solar heating systems are now founded on a reliable and mature technology. However, the development of similar, but more complex, systems to provide both domestic hot water and space heating (solar combisystems) resulted in a diverse range of different designs that were not carefully optimized to reflect local climate and practice. Application of energy-efficient building strategies such as improved thermal insulation and use of low temperature heat supply systems is becoming increasingly common. This trend, combined with growing environmental awareness and the subsidies available in certain countries, favours an increase in market share for solar combisystems. The need for guidelines in selecting the appropriate system and designing this system according to the specific needs of the building and the local environment is therefore now increasingly pressing. This book fills that need.
Over the past 20 years, energy conservation imperatives, the use of computer based design aids, and major advances in intelligent management systems for buildings have transformed the design and operation of comfort systems for buildings. The "rules of thumb" used by designers in the1970s are no longer viable. Today, building systems engineers must have a strong analytical basis for design synthesis processes. But how can you develop this basis? Do you have on your shelf a reference that describes all the latest methods? Does it cover everything from the fundamentals to state-of-the art, intelligent systems? Does it do so in practical way that you can easily access and use when you need to? The Handbook of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning does. It combines practice and theory, systems and control, and the latest methods and technologies to provide, in one volume, all of the modern design and operation information needed by HVAC engineers. The Handbook of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning will stay up-to-date while other resources become outmoded and go through lengthy revision and reprint processes. Through a link on the CRC Web site, owners of the Handbook can access new material periodically posted by the author.
The second edition of this reliable text provides readers with a thorough understanding of the design procedures that are essential in designing new buildings and building refurbishment.
