The European City - A Western Perspective (Hardcover): D. Burtenshaw, M Bateman, G. J Ashworth The European City - A Western Perspective (Hardcover)
D. Burtenshaw, M Bateman, G. J Ashworth
R3,710 Discovery Miles 37 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1991, this book focusses on the philosophies, histories and processes which have made the West European city system rich in internal variety yet distinct from that of the rest of western industrialised urban society. It synthesizes international experiences in particular aspects of urban policy making, with reference to Germany, France and Benelux. The book covers urban planning in its broadest sense - from economic, socio-spacial, recreational, housing and transport perspectives.

Leadership in Planning - How to Communicate Ideas and Effect Positive Change (Paperback): Jeff Levine Leadership in Planning - How to Communicate Ideas and Effect Positive Change (Paperback)
Jeff Levine
R1,083 Discovery Miles 10 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Being an effective city planner means being an effective leader. You need to be prepared to convince people that good planning matters. Often a well-written, thoughtful and inclusive plan doesn't result in meaningful action, because planners don't show leadership skills. At some point, some city planners become cynical and worn down, wondering why no one listens to them but not doing the self-reflection about how that could change. Leadership in Planning explains how to get support for planning initiatives so they don't just fade from memory. It will guide city planners to think less about organizational charts and more about: * being a respected voice within your organization, both with staff and with your boss; * being a good communicator with people outside your organization; and * being able to understand how and when to push for good planning ideas to turn them into actions. Along the way, case studies bring these concepts to the real world of municipal planning. In addition, past planning figures' actions are explored to see what they did right and what mistakes they made.

Youth Politics in Urban Asia (Hardcover): Yi'en Cheng, Sonia Lam-Knott Youth Politics in Urban Asia (Hardcover)
Yi'en Cheng, Sonia Lam-Knott
R4,133 Discovery Miles 41 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Youth Politics in Urban Asia examines how young people's political actions in Asia are the product of their urban realities, and at the same time, appreciates that young people are striving to remake these urban spaces in a myriad of tangible and intangible ways. The book explores the ways in which urban development and urban governance in Asia enable or constrain young people's citizenship, aspirations, and responses to a variety of socioeconomic and political issues in the region. Informed by qualitative and ethnographic approaches, featuring locales ranging from Pune to Shanghai, the chapters broadly address three themes: the variegated ways in which youth politics is constituted and has manifested in Asian cities; the role of cities in shaping and mediating youth politics in Asia; and whether it is possible to conceive of youth politics across urban Asia as diverse and specific, but also structurally entangled. In examining how young people's political performances and social actions are shaped by, and conversely, shape, Asian urban spaces, this collection advances a deeper understanding of the interplay of youth politics and urban environments. It will be an essential text for scholars and students interested in young people's politics, urban studies, and social change in Asia. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Space and Polity.

Urban Recovery - Intersecting Displacement with Post War Reconstruction (Hardcover): Howayda Al-Harithy Urban Recovery - Intersecting Displacement with Post War Reconstruction (Hardcover)
Howayda Al-Harithy
R4,169 Discovery Miles 41 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book calls for re-conceptualising urban recovery by exploring the intersection of reconstruction and displacement in volatile contexts in the Global South. It explores the spatial, social, artistic, and political conditions that promote urban recovery. Reconstruction and displacement have often been studied independently as two different processes of physical recovery and human migration towards safety and shelter. It is hoped that by intersecting or even bridging reconstruction with displacement we can cross-fertilize and exploit both discourses to reach a greater understanding of the notion of urban recovery as a holistic and multi-layered process. This book brings multidisciplinary perspectives into conversation with each other to look beyond the conflict-related displacement and reconstruction and into the greater processes of crises and recovery. It uses empirical research to examine how trauma, crisis, and recovery overlap, coexist, collide and redefine each other. The core exploration of this edited collection is to understand how the oppositional framing of destruction versus reconstruction and place-making versus displacement can be disrupted; how displacement is spatialized; and how reconstruction is extended to the displaced people rebuilding their lives, environments, and memories in new locations. In the process, displacement is framed as agency, the displaced as social capital, post-conflict urban environments as archives, and reconstructions as socio-spatial practices. With local and international insights from scholars across disciplines, this book will appeal to academics and students of urban studies, architecture, and social sciences, as well as those involved in the process of urban recovery.

The Economic and Legal Impact of Covid-19 - The Case of Poland (Hardcover): Jerzy Menkes, Magdalena Suska The Economic and Legal Impact of Covid-19 - The Case of Poland (Hardcover)
Jerzy Menkes, Magdalena Suska
R4,137 Discovery Miles 41 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In response to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments and international institutions took steps to contain the harmful consequences on citizens' lives and health, as well as the economy. In the short term, the goal was to limit the spread of the virus and the effects of the restrictions on the economy and, in the longer run, to prevent the appearance of new cases, facilitate the end of social restrictions, reboot the economy, and return to a path of sustainable growth and development. This is an economic and legal exploration of the impact of the pandemic, in the Polish context, examining Polish society and the economy as well as the response of the Polish authorities to the pandemic. The choice of Poland as the subject of the research is justified by its specificity. On the one hand, Poland is a country undergoing systemic transformation with access to European and transatlantic institutions. On the other hand, in recent years, it has evolved towards a hybrid democracy and is currently diverging away from the EU project. The book presents Poland's legal and institutional response to the pandemic, analysed through the prism of common European values and Poland's international commitments. It signposts the financial solutions adopted by the EU in the aftermath of the outbreak to assess how they will be used in combatting the short and longer-term consequences of the pandemic in Poland. The book is an introduction to original research, shaped by the novelty of the subject matter, and as such, will be essential reading for students and researchers of economics, law, and international relations.

The Routledge Handbook of Critical Resource Geography (Hardcover): Matthew Himley, Elizabeth Havice, Gabriela Valdivia The Routledge Handbook of Critical Resource Geography (Hardcover)
Matthew Himley, Elizabeth Havice, Gabriela Valdivia
R6,575 Discovery Miles 65 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Handbook provides an essential guide to the study of resources and their role in socio-environmental change. With original contributions from more than 60 authors with expertise in a wide range of resource types and world regions, it offers a toolkit of conceptual and methodological approaches for documenting, analyzing, and reimagining resources and the worlds with which they are entangled. The volume has an introduction and four thematic sections. The introductory chapter outlines key trajectories for thinking critically with and about resources. Chapters in Section I, "(Un)knowing resources," offer distinct epistemological entry points and approaches for studying resources. Chapters in Section II, "(Un)knowing resource systems," examine the components and logics of the capitalist systems through which resources are made, circulated, consumed, and disposed of, while chapters in Section III, "Doing critical resource geography: Methods, advocacy, and teaching," focus on the practices of critical resource scholarship, exploring the opportunities and challenges of carrying out engaged forms of research and pedagogy. Chapters in Section IV, "Resource-making/world-making," use case studies to illustrate how things are made into resources and how these processes of resource-making transform socio-environmental life. This vibrant and diverse critical resource scholarship provides an indispensable reference point for researchers, students, and practitioners interested in understanding how resources matter to the world and to the systems, conflicts, and debates that make and remake it.

Mapping Paradigms in Modern and Contemporary Art - Poetic Cartography (Hardcover): Simonetta Moro Mapping Paradigms in Modern and Contemporary Art - Poetic Cartography (Hardcover)
Simonetta Moro
R3,710 R3,083 Discovery Miles 30 830 Save R627 (17%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Mapping Paradigms in Modern and Contemporary Art defines a new cartographic aesthetic, or what Simonetta Moro calls carto-aesthetics, as a key to interpreting specific phenomena in modern and contemporary art, through the concept of poetic cartography. The problem of mapping, although indebted to the "spatial turn" of poststructuralist philosophy, is reconstructed as hermeneutics, while exposing the nexus between topology, space-time, and memory. The book posits that the emergence of "mapping" as a ubiquitous theme in contemporary art can be attributed to the power of the cartographic model to constitute multiple worldviews that can be seen as paradigmatic of the post-modern and contemporary condition. This book will be of particular interest to scholars in art history, art theory, aesthetics, and cartography.

Land and Housing Policies in Europe and the USA - A Comparative Analysis (Hardcover): Graham Hallett Land and Housing Policies in Europe and the USA - A Comparative Analysis (Hardcover)
Graham Hallett
R3,247 Discovery Miles 32 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1988, this book concentrates on urban land policy and was particularly significant when it was originally published because the 1980s were an era when the rich were getting richer and the poor poorer and in which changes in the ownership of and access to real estate contributed to this polarisation. The book focusses on some core topics, namely: The buying, selling and holding of land by public agencies; the land market, including the impact of taxation and subsidisation; the control of the land market through town planning controls. There are chapters devoted to urban land policy in the former West Germany, The Netherlands, France, the former Yugoslavia, the UK and USA.

The Development of Housing in Scotland (Hardcover): Douglas Niven The Development of Housing in Scotland (Hardcover)
Douglas Niven
R2,846 Discovery Miles 28 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1979, this volume begins with an historical summary of housing development in Scotland. Scottish urban housing has always followed a unique and distinctive pattern from the rest of the UK, resembling more closely the flatted developments of Continental Europe. The book compares the policies and programmes of development in EU countries and Scandinavia. The problems caused by over-emphasis on public-sector housing in Scotland since the First World War are discussed. A break-down of the work carried out by housing societies and associations reveals little national or local support in Scotland, unlike in European or Scandinavian countries where such association have formed a vital element in their housing policies.

The Cities of the Poor - Settlement Planning in Developing Countries (Hardcover): Alan Turner The Cities of the Poor - Settlement Planning in Developing Countries (Hardcover)
Alan Turner
R3,709 Discovery Miles 37 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1980, this book was written by consultants in urban development with wide experience in the developing world and is a source book aimed at advisers (often from developed countries) who assist with urban planning matters on behalf of multi-lateral agencies such as the World Bank. It presents a style of consultancy which accepts that not all the problems of settlement planning in developing countries can be solved by the transfer of Western methods. Although the book concentrates on the techniques and methods which have been found to be effective in the field, it also argues for a new philosophy of consultancy, in which consultants work with local staff and using the ingenuity and spirit of enterprise among the communities themselves.

Inside Third World Cities (Hardcover): Stella Lowder Inside Third World Cities (Hardcover)
Stella Lowder
R3,707 Discovery Miles 37 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986, this book focusses on life within global cities in the developing world, analysing on a city-level the circulation and consumption of goods and services within them. When the book was first published it was one of only a few to offer systematic comparative analyses of developing world cities, and those stemming from different regions, with examples from different continents in each chapter. It discusses the problems faced by such city populations and shows how the procedures, distributive systems and social conventions reflect the complex histories of the cities, most of which have been subject to colonial rule, and of their inhabitants, many of whom are either migrants or first generation citizens.

The New Housing Shortage - Housing Affordability in Europe and the USA (Hardcover): Graham Hallett The New Housing Shortage - Housing Affordability in Europe and the USA (Hardcover)
Graham Hallett
R3,256 Discovery Miles 32 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1993, this book is a detailed comparative examination of the housing issue by housing experts, looking at the USA, UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France. The volume offers an excellent blend of critical analysis and practical policy recommendations, including a better targeting of tax concessions, a move back to social housing more diverse than in the past and measures for reducing homelessness. Perennial issues which remain as pertinent today as when the book was first published are also discussed: homelessness, housing affordability for people on low incomes, changes in housing markets.

Cities in Search of Freedom - European Municipalities against the Leviathan (Hardcover): Elisabetta Mocca Cities in Search of Freedom - European Municipalities against the Leviathan (Hardcover)
Elisabetta Mocca
R2,134 Discovery Miles 21 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The past 30 years have seen the weakening of the central state by processes of devolution, Europeanisation and globalisation, which have led to dramatic clashes between nation states and local authorities. Why do some cities feel the need to sidestep the state in their decision-making? And how can they do so? Bridging political geography and politics, this book gives a new perspective on the central state’s weakening authority and the parallel rise of cities as political actors. The author considers the tensions between central states and European cities, giving a new perspective to students and researchers in urban studies, geography and political science.

Monitoring Continuous Phenomena - Background, Methods and Solutions (Hardcover): Peter Lorkowski Monitoring Continuous Phenomena - Background, Methods and Solutions (Hardcover)
Peter Lorkowski
R5,336 Discovery Miles 53 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Monitoring continuous phenomena by stationary and mobile sensors has become a common due to the improvement in hardware and communication infrastructure and decrease in it's cost. Sensor data is now available in near real time via web interfaces and in machine-readable form, facilitated by paradigms like the Internet of Things (IoT). There are still some obstacles in the usability of the data since the positions (in space and time) of observation and the positions of interest usually do not coincide. Interpolation is the technique to fill such gaps and there are manifold methods to perform it. To actually operate a monitoring system, there are problems like unambiguous identification of interpolation method and associated parameters, appropriate interface to store observations and retrieve interpolated data, continuous update of the interpolation model for real time monitoring, compression and progressive retrieval of observational data and critical states definition and notification by using aggregation of values. This book proposes a general system architecture that addresses these problems. It is not confined to details about particular interpolation methods but rather takes a holistic view on the problem of monitoring. State-of-the-art technologies like geostatistics, sensor web enablement and field data types are introduced and applied in order to provide a viable toolset for the problem domain. The focus is on the overall organization of the monitoring and the architectural design of the software system and the associated simulation framework that is used to systematically evaluate different monitoring approaches. The whole cycle of a monitoring entailing observation, interpolation, discretization, storage, retrieval and notification is covered. Concrete solutions for several common problems in this context are provided.

Place Branding - Connecting Tourist Experiences to Places (Paperback): Pantea Foroudi, Chiara Mauri, Charles Dennis, T. C.... Place Branding - Connecting Tourist Experiences to Places (Paperback)
Pantea Foroudi, Chiara Mauri, Charles Dennis, T. C. Melewar
R1,308 Discovery Miles 13 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Place branding as a field of research is still in a state of infancy. This book seeks to address this, offering a theory of place branding based on the tourist experience, keeping in mind the roles of stakeholders, both public and private organisations and DMOs in managing the place brand. Place Branding: Connecting Tourist Experiences to Places seeks to build a customer-based view of place branding through focusing on the individual as a tourist who travels to undertake a memorable experience. The place is the key creator of this experience, which begins well before the travel-to and ends well after the travel-back. Individuals choose the places where to go, collect information on them, ask for advice and suggestions from fellow travellers, give feedback when they come back and talk a lot about their experience, spreading word-of-mouth. The book enables readers to understand how the tourist experience can be managed as a brand. Readers are exposed to a variety of problems, methodological approaches, and geographical areas, which allows them to adapt frames to different contexts and situations. This book is recommended reading for students and scholars of business, marketing, tourism, urban studies and public diplomacy, as well as practitioners, business consultants and people working in public administration and politics.

Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred - Understanding the Geographies of Religion and Spirituality in Sacred Travel... Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred - Understanding the Geographies of Religion and Spirituality in Sacred Travel (Paperback)
Michael A Di Giovine, Jaeyeon Choe
R1,287 Discovery Miles 12 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred: Understanding the Geographies of Religion and Spirituality in Sacred Travel examines the many ways in which pilgrimage engages with sacredness, delving beyond the officially recognized, and often religiously conceived, pilgrimage sites. As scholarship examining the lived experiences of pilgrims and tourists has demonstrated, pilgrimage need not be religious in nature, nor be officially sanctioned; rather, they can be 'hyper-meaningful' voyages, set apart from the everyday profane life-in a word, they are sacred. Separating the social category of 'religion' from the 'sacred,' this volume brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars employing perspectives from anthropology, geography, sociology, religious studies, theology, and interdisciplinary tourism studies to theorize sacredness, its variability, and the ways in which it is officially recognized or condemned by power brokers. Rich in case studies from sacred centers throughout the world, the contributions pay close attention to the ways in which pilgrims, central authorities, site managers, locals, and other stakeholders on the ground appropriate, negotiate, shape, contest, or circumvent the powerful forces of the sacred. Delving 'beyond the officially sacred,' this collective examination of pilgrimages-both well-established and new, religious and secular, authorized and not-presents a compelling look at the interplay of secular powers and the transcendent forces of the sacred at these hyper-meaningful sites. Providing a blueprint for how work in the anthropology and geography of religion, and the fields of pilgrimage and religious tourism, may move forward, Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred will be of great interest to an interdisciplinary field of scholars. The chapters were originally published as a special issue in Tourism Geographies.
