The ongoing paradigm change in regard to the use of energy, its efficient usage and the consumption of resources is giving rise to new light systems and lighting appliances. This development might also lead to the use of light as a building material in its own right, comparable to traditional building materials, making it possible to create light space productions something that did not seem feasible up to now due to the high cost of energy and of light systems. The goal of this book is to develop temporary light spaces that re-interpret the existing urban environment on a seasonal basis or over a cycle of several years. As a result, the city will literally appear in a new light. Strollers in the city streets will experience their familiar environment in a new way. Illuminated planes interlacing with planes made by linear fields of light beams will create immaterial material space experiences: still lifes of light within which one can move about and light choreographies that move barely noticeably, creating still lifes in motion. Current research aims at exploring, imagining and inventing stand-alone spatial structures of light, adding on to and transforming existing spaces, creating a new spatial awareness that may enable people to experience urban space in a different way. Similar to the process of architectural design, where haptic built volumes create interspaces, the light spaces that are presently being designed make these interspaces visible and allow urban dwellers to experience unexpected spatial constellations. The discourse in this book starts with essays introducing aspects of light spaces, including the following: Christian Bartenbach on the perception of light as something that creates space; Niels Gutschow on the ritual dimension of light, an element in the history of creation; Samuel Widmer on light in near-death experiences; Aldous Huxley on light as the messenger from a world we perceive on an unconscious level; Jun'ichiro Tanizaki on the world of the shadow and Tadashi Endo on movement as a relation between time and space in Butoh, the Japanese dance of darkness. The discourse concludes with documents on light spaces by Wolfgang Rang collected over a period of 30 years showing how these light spaces were regarded in the writings of con-temporaries, including Max Bacher on the dawn of a new era; Hans-Peter Schwarz on the deconstruction of space by light; Jurgen Hasse on light as a discourse fragment of public space; Manuel Cuadra on red luminescence; and Antonio de Campos on shadow as an expression of light.

In this biography, Franz Schulze probes the private and professional life of one of the most famous architects and architectural critics of the 20th century. The only son of a wealthy Midwestern family, Philip Johnson was a millionaire by the time he graduated from Harvard, and in 1932 he helped stage the historic International Style exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. A patron of the arts and a political activist who flirted with the politics of Hitler, Huey Long, and Father Coughlin, Johnson created controversial and historical structures such as the Glass House, the Roofless Church, the AT & T Building, the Crustal Cathedral, and many more. Johnsons's personal charms paired with his manipulative ploys - like his "borrowing" of designs - shine through in this biography. Drawing on Johnson's correspondence, personal photographs, and speeches, and on interviews with his friends and contemporaries, Schulze fills the biography with information on the architect's family, travels, friends and lovers, and his many buildings and spaces themselves.

Space Packed: The Architecture of Alfred Neumann is the first critical monograph on the work of the Austrian-born modernist architect Alfred Neumann (1900-1968). Based on an exploration of his writings and a close study of his built and unbuilt projects, it unveils and analyses Neumann's approach to architecture in the context of post-war modernism and the establishment of the State of Israel from 1948 onwards. Rafi Segal's book brings to attention again this highly significant, yet largely forgotten figure who contributed vastly to establishing modernism in Israel and who had a lasting impact on the new country's architectural culture. At his time, Neumann was equally renowned and controversial for his original designs that differed from modernist mainstream. Space Packed is divided into four chapters that discuss the development of Neumann's architectural theories, methodologies, and built work during the 1950s and 1960s, against the backdrop of contemporary architectural discourse and the nation-building demands of the new state of Israel. It also features a chronologically-organised and illustrated catalogue of Neumann's buildings and designs, including a vast number of previously unpublished photographs, drawings and sketches.

Today`s cities are growing rapidly, creating heterogeneous urban fabrics that cross administrative and political borders. In 2006, Laurent de Wurstemberger founded the Atelier ar-ter in Carouge with two partners, and in 2011, along with the material scientist Rodrigo Fernandez, the company Terrabloc, which turns excavated material from construction sites into compacted clay blocks. In 2018, he opened his architectural practice in Geneva and has since completed a number of smaller, more sophisticated projects, including the renovation of a farm in Choully (GE). Text in English and German. The Neues Haus, the new building for the Munchner Kammerspiele, is not a big building in any sense. The plot of land not far from Maximilian-strasse, whose greatest advantage is its proximity to Richard Riemerschmied's Schauspielhaus, is only about 1000 m2 in area. The most important quality of the design is in fact that it accepts the modesty of its role. The new building subordinates itself to the main Kammerspiele building, and manages without lavish foyers and extensive prestigious areas. The Neues Haus is a servant building, a place where work is done. A hasty passer-by would see the building simply as a white cube, reticent and introverted. Given the serene mastery of the brief and the architectural resources, one is almost inclined to call it a work of Peichl's old age, combining his love of clear volumes with a sovereign grasp of technical requirements. Like the silvery-sparkling ORF studios, the ground radio station in Styria and the liner-like phosphate elimination plant in Berlin before it, the Neues Haus is also crammed full of technology. It contains three stages, and two of them can be used at the same time. The largest playing area is elaborately equipped with gallery and under-stage; it is therefore intended as the main rehearsal area in future. The two large auditoriums are stacked one above the other like shoe-boxes and form a massive hollow core surrounded by all the service functions. The interior is dominated by a plainness that oscillates between poverty and asceticism. The corridors and foyers are narrow, the stairs simple, the interval areas positively sparse. The only opulent feature is the splendid technical equipment. Peichl's handwriting can be seen in the treatment of the details and his ingenious practice of self-quotation. Many of the motifs are reminiscent of earlier projects, and of course the typical portholes, spiral staircases and railings made of steel hawsers crop up again, all Peichl's usual maritime metaphors. In this way he has produced a building whose cool elegance reveals scarcely anything of its inner values.

Peter Baumberger and Karin Stegmeier are young architects who have produced high-quality Zurich housing in recent years. In addition to their highly refined residential architecture, they have designed inspired buildings such as the extension to the Dietlikon village school or the extension to the primary school centre in Laufen. An in-depth exploration of the design process and teaching methods of the remarkable British architect as revealed by the archives of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal The British architect James Frazer Stirling (1924-1992) stimulated impassioned responses among both supporters and detractors, and he continues to be the subject of fierce debate. He earned international renown through such innovative-and frequently controversial-projects as the Leicester University Engineering Building (1959-63); the History Faculty building at Cambridge University (1964-67); the Neue Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (1977-84); the Clore Gallery at Tate Britain (1984); and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University (1979-84). Stirling was also a visiting professor at the Yale School of Architecture, where he trained and influenced many of the current leaders in the field. Fully illustrated with previously unpublished documents and new photography from the James Stirling/Michael Wilford Archive at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, this book allows for a close examination of design drawings, photographs, and models spanning Stirling's entire career. These materials deepen our understanding of the influences, early formation, approach, and process of an architect whose work resists labeling. The Open Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of Belgium) is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Flemish Government Architect bOb Van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. In 2001, Pascal Muller and Peter Sigrist, who died in 2012, founded their architectural office in Zurich. Their dynamism led them to construct two exceptional buildings in 2006 and 2007, which were highly regarded by experts: the municipal administration centre in Affoltern am Albis and the festival cabin in Amriswil, a concentric structure that fittingly reflects the atmosphere of a festive tent. Since then, several residential developments have followed, such as the coherent Frohheim estate in Zurich-Affoltern and the widely regarded Kalkbreite in Zurich, which was developed over a tram garage and was the result of a new cooperative concept. Public buildings such as the Kunstfreilager Dreispitz in Basel and the Volketswil community centre also attracted attention. This volume presents in detail 18 buildings and projects from the past 16 years, including texts, plans and images. A further 21 buildings are described with texts and one or two images in the list of works.
