Henri Delanghe, Ugur Muldur, Luc Soete
R1,701 Discovery Miles 17 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This innovative book focuses on the most important concept underpinning current European Union research policy. It describes the history and concept of the European Research Area (ERA), analyses some of the underlying assumptions, assesses some of its achievements, and takes a brief look at its future. European Science and Technology Policy deals with the notion of the ERA, a coordinated and effective European Research Area, the successful achievement of which is the main objective of EU research policy under the Lisbon Treaty. The book demonstrates that almost ten years after the formal launch of the ERA concept, little top-down progress seems to have been made in terms of achieving better governance of the European research landscape. However, tangible bottom-up progress has been made towards harmonizing research beyond the existing uncoordinated national, intergovernmental and supranational policy schemes. Given the current ongoing ERA debate, this timely publication will be an invaluable tool for technology and innovation policymakers and practitioners in Europe. It will also appeal to scholars and students in the fields of science, technology and innovation.

University-Industry Knowledge Interactions - People, Tensions and Impact (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Joaquin M. Azagra-Caro,... University-Industry Knowledge Interactions - People, Tensions and Impact (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Joaquin M. Azagra-Caro, Pablo D'Este, David Barbera-Tomas
R3,129 Discovery Miles 31 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

University-industry interaction combines several layers of actors, states and effects. People make choices, based on their individual characteristics, at different stages of a scientific career, in a highly internationalised profession. Tensions arise when university administrators and managers need to strike a balance among different promotion instruments, or when the university or public research organisation tries to solve the trade-offs between long- and short-term relationships, or among new management practices. Impacts are related to scientific agendas, the economic returns for firms or the societal benefits. This book adopts a people-tension-impact approach to identify key insights, by combining qualitative and quantitative research, established and novel methodologies, and different geographic settings. The chapters in this volume provide new perspectives on university-industry interactions related to gender biases, entrepreneurial involvement of PhD students and the role of international mobility. They also focus on how the positive impacts of university-industry interactions coexist with unresolved tensions linked to policy combinations, long-term contractual relationships, management practices and organisational strategies. Chapters 4 and 6 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Theory and Practice In Gas Turbines (Hardcover): A.S. Rangwala Theory and Practice In Gas Turbines (Hardcover)
A.S. Rangwala
R1,793 Discovery Miles 17 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Among various mechanical devices built to produce power for industrial and societal needs, gas turbines offer a number of significant advantages. The sliding components in reciprocating engines cause considerable vibrations. Hydroelectric power from turbines using water is a great resource, but potential sites are limited. Steam power plants require expensive steam generating equipment of large bulk, and installation may stretch over lengthy time periods. In contrast, gas turbines operate smoothly with low vibrations, are compact in size, can be started rapidly from rest and may be installed fairly quickly. Gas turbines offer even greater benefits in the aviation arena. Turbojet and multi-rotor turbofan engines have no competition for powering larger aircrafts at faster speeds. Applications in other fields abound. An outstanding example is the aeroderivative gas turbines on offshore oil platforms, where their lighter weight, smaller footprint and ability to burn many different types of fuel make it a clear choice. This book is written to meet the needs of students in engineering colleges and practicing engineers. The material has been specifically tailored for college undergraduate and graduate level design engineering of rotating machine courses. In keeping with its mostly introductory nature, the primary focus is on thermodynamic cycle design and practical mechanical design features. Where possible, electronic spreadsheet type of calculations is used in example problems to calculate flow characteristics and related cycle design parameters. The book focuses on: Fuel consumption, power output and exhaust gas emissions State-of-the-art in the thermal and fluid flow technologies for design of single and multi-rotor gas turbines Methods to enhance performance through creative component designs Analysis of complex problems ranging from compressor stall to optimizing operation from partial to full load.

Moments of Valuation - Exploring Sites of Dissonance (Hardcover): Ariane Berthoin Antal, Michael Hutter, David Stark Moments of Valuation - Exploring Sites of Dissonance (Hardcover)
Ariane Berthoin Antal, Michael Hutter, David Stark
R3,586 Discovery Miles 35 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The outcome of innovation processes are determined by complex, historically grown valuation practices. In this book, a wide range of innovations are taken into consideration, from small inventions like entertainment novelties to large societal changes through new technologies. The chapters observe the particular local or distributed sites in which their episodes of innovation take place, and they identify the initial dissonance among those judging a newly proposed alternative. The emphasis of the inquiry, however, is on the practices of valuation that are at work when something succeeds in being "new". The authors represent a wide variety of sub-disciplines and national backgrounds in the social sciences. They share an interest in social valuation and a pragmatist approach. The differences between their empirical evidence reflect the wide variety of appearances that valuation takes in contemporary society. They are anthropologists, economic or cultural sociologists, organization researchers, historians or political scientists. A number of chapters deals with aesthetic valuation, as in the tasting of a new vintage, or in the socio-technical process that shaped successful synthesizer sounds. Other chapters discuss the judgment processes in organizations, like architect offices or consultancy firms, and processes of evaluation and valorization in larger fields of practice, like accounting or mathematics. The studies are both of interest in their various professional fields, and contribute to a more general understanding of the social and cultural conditions under which innovations fail and succeed.
