Marta Borda, Simon Grima, Ilona Kwiecien
R3,313 Discovery Miles 33 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the challenges for the life insurance sector in Europe arising from new technologies, socio-cultural and demographic trends, and the financial crisis. It presents theoretical and applied research in all areas related to life insurance products and markets, and explores future determinants of the insurance industry's development by highlighting novel solutions in insurance supervision and trends in consumer protection. Drawing on their academic and practical expertise, the contributors identify problems relating to risk analysis and evaluation, demographic challenges, consumer protection, product distribution, mortality risk modeling, applications of life insurance in contemporary pension systems, financial stability and solvency of life insurers. They also examine the impact of population aging on life insurance markets and the role of digitalization. Lastly, based on an analysis of early experiences with the implementation of the Solvency II system, the book provides policy recommendations for the development of life insurance in Europe.

Underwriters of the United States - How Insurance Shaped the American Founding (Hardcover): Hannah Farber Underwriters of the United States - How Insurance Shaped the American Founding (Hardcover)
Hannah Farber
R973 Discovery Miles 9 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Unassuming but formidable, American maritime insurers used their position at the pinnacle of global trade to shape the new nation. The international information they gathered and the capital they generated enabled them to play central roles in state building and economic development. During the Revolution, they helped the U.S. negotiate foreign loans, sell state debts, and establish a single national bank. Afterward, they increased their influence by lending money to the federal government and to its citizens. Even as federal and state governments began to encroach on their domain, maritime insurers adapted, preserving their autonomy and authority through extensive involvement in the formation of commercial law. Leveraging their claims to unmatched expertise, they operated free from government interference while simultaneously embedding themselves into the nation's institutional fabric. By the early nineteenth century, insurers were no longer just risk assessors. They were nation builders and market makers. Deeply and imaginatively researched, Underwriters of the United States uses marine insurers to reveal a startlingly original story of risk, money, and power in the founding era.

R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This open access book collects expert contributions on actuarial modelling and related topics, from machine learning to legal aspects, and reflects on possible insurance designs during an epidemic/pandemic. Starting by considering the impulse given by COVID-19 to the insurance industry and to actuarial research, the text covers compartment models, mortality changes during a pandemic, risk-sharing in the presence of low probability events, group testing, compositional data analysis for detecting data inconsistencies, behaviouristic aspects in fighting a pandemic, and insurers' legal problems, amongst others. Concluding with an essay by a practicing actuary on the applicability of the methods proposed, this interdisciplinary book is aimed at actuaries as well as readers with a background in mathematics, economics, statistics, finance, epidemiology, or sociology.

Transparency in Insurance Contract Law (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Pierpaolo Marano, Kyriaki Noussia Transparency in Insurance Contract Law (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Pierpaolo Marano, Kyriaki Noussia
R4,809 Discovery Miles 48 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This Volume of the AIDA Europe Research Series on Insurance Law and Regulation focuses on transparency as the guiding principle of modern insurance law. It consists of chapters written by leaders in the respective field, who address transparency in a range of civil and common law jurisdictions, along with overview chapters. Each chapter reviews the transparency principles applicable in the jurisdiction discussed. Whether expressly or impliedly, all jurisdictions recognize a duty on the part of the insured to make a fair presentation of the risk when submitting a proposal for cover to the insurers, although there is little consensus on the scope of that duty. Disputed matters in this regard include: whether it is satisfied by honest answers to express questions, or whether there is a spontaneous duty of disclosure; whether facts relating to the insured's character, as opposed to the nature of the risk itself, are to be presented to the insurers; the role of insurance intermediaries in the placement process; and the remedy for breach of duty. Transparency is, however, a much wider concept. Potential policyholders are in principle entitled to be made aware of the key terms of coverage and to be warned of hidden traps (such as conditions precedent, average clauses and excess provisions), but there are a range of different approaches. Some jurisdictions have adopted a "soft law" approach, using codes of practice for pre-contract disclosure, while other jurisdictions employ the rather nebulous duty of (utmost) good faith. Leaving aside placement, transparency is also demanded after the policy has been incepted. The insured is required to be transparent during the claims process. There is less consistency in national legislation regarding the implementation of transparency by insurers in the context of handling claims.

Insurance Planning Models: Price Competition And Regulation Of Financial Stability (Hardcover): Vsevolod Malinovskii Insurance Planning Models: Price Competition And Regulation Of Financial Stability (Hardcover)
Vsevolod Malinovskii
R3,073 Discovery Miles 30 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Insurance Planning Models: Price Competition and Regulation of Financial Stability is an exciting new book that takes readers inside the secrets of internal organization of the modern general insurance business. Many people know that it is subject to intensive state regulation, whereby the purpose is to maintain long-term efficiency, honesty, security and stability in the interest and for the protection of policyholders. However, except for knowing that the insurance system is regulated by intensive calculations, that the insurance companies have different positions on the market, that they pursue different goals and even compete with each other, and that one of the tools of this competition is the policy price, not so many people know how to achieve these deserving goals. In developing quantitative recommendations and directives to competing insurers, regulators rely on certain models. In the 1900s, such models were proposed. They were useful for an insight into the probabilistic nature of the insurance process, but not for direct application to practically meaningful problems of insurance regulation. This book is your guide to the rigorously constructed long-term dynamic models with the aim to improve regulatory methods and develop quantitative recommendations using both analytical calculations and computer simulation. It is addressed to a wide range of readers, including interested policyholders, economists whose interest lies in insurance management and regulation, and mathematicians wishing to expand the scope of application for their knowledge. This book is devoted to certain issues that are either not sufficiently presented, or even absent in the literature. It is an attempt to penetrate from the standpoint of mathematical modeling into the goals which face insurance regulators and contending company managers for preventing insolvencies, or even crises pertinent to badly regulated complex reflexive systems. It offers rigorous probabilistic models of long-term insurance business based on the laws of mass phenomena. They mitigate deficiencies of oversimplified risk models. The book presents advances in probabilistic techniques designed to seek quantitative, rather than qualitative, directives and recommendations regarding safe control aiming to achieve different business goals.

Risk and Insurance - A Graduate Text (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Soren Asmussen, Mogens Steffensen Risk and Insurance - A Graduate Text (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Soren Asmussen, Mogens Steffensen
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This textbook provides a broad overview of the present state of insurance mathematics and some related topics in risk management, financial mathematics and probability. Both non-life and life aspects are covered. The emphasis is on probability and modeling rather than statistics and practical implementation. Aimed at the graduate level, pointing in part to current research topics, it can potentially replace other textbooks on basic non-life insurance mathematics and advanced risk management methods in non-life insurance. Based on chapters selected according to the particular topics in mind, the book may serve as a source for introductory courses to insurance mathematics for non-specialists, advanced courses for actuarial students, or courses on probabilistic aspects of risk. It will also be useful for practitioners and students/researchers in related areas such as finance and statistics who wish to get an overview of the general area of mathematical modeling and analysis in insurance.

Private Health Insurance - History, Politics and Performance (Paperback): Sarah Thomson, Anna Sagan, Elias Mossialos Private Health Insurance - History, Politics and Performance (Paperback)
Sarah Thomson, Anna Sagan, Elias Mossialos; Assisted by Jonathan North
R1,264 Discovery Miles 12 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Can private health insurance fill gaps in publicly financed coverage? Does it enhance access to health care or improve efficiency in health service delivery? Will it provide fiscal relief for governments struggling to raise public revenue for health? This book examines the successes, failures and challenges of private health insurance globally through country case studies written by leading national experts. Each case study considers the role of history and politics in shaping private health insurance and determining its impact on health system performance. Despite great diversity in the size and functioning of markets for private health insurance, the book identifies clear patterns across countries, drawing out valuable lessons for policymakers while showing how history and politics have proved a persistent barrier to effective public policy. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Applied Economic Analysis of Information and Risk (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Moriki Hosoe, Iltae Kim Applied Economic Analysis of Information and Risk (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Moriki Hosoe, Iltae Kim
R3,106 Discovery Miles 31 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines interesting new topics in applied economics from the perspectives of the economics of information and risk, two fields of economics that address the consequences of asymmetric information, environmental risk and uncertainty for the nature and efficiency of interactions between individuals and organizations. In the economics of information, the essential task is to examine the condition of asymmetric information under which the information gap is exploited. For the economics of risk, it is important to investigate types of behavior including risk aversion, risk sharing, and risk prevention, and to reexamine the classical expected utility approach and the relationships among several types of the changes in risk. Few books have ever analyzed topics in applied economics with regard to information and risk. This book provides a comprehensive collection of applied analyses, while also revisiting certain basic concepts in the economics of information and risk. The book consists of two parts. In Part I, several aspects of applied economics are investigated, including public policy, labor economics, and political economics, from the standpoint of the economics of (asymmetric) information. First, several basic frameworks of the incentive mechanism with regard to transaction-specific investment are assessed, then various tools for market design and organization design are explored. In Part II, mathematical measures of risk and risk aversion are examined in more detail, and readers are introduced to stochastic selection rules governing choice behavior under uncertainty. Several types of change in the random variable for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability distribution function (PDF) are discussed. In closing, the part investigates the comparative static results of these changes in CDF or PDF on the general decision model, incorporating uncertain situations in applied economics.

The Demand for Life Insurance - Dynamic Ecological Systemic Theory Using Machine Learning Techniques (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020):... The Demand for Life Insurance - Dynamic Ecological Systemic Theory Using Machine Learning Techniques (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Wookjae Heo
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book, adopting machine learning techniques for the financial planning field, explores the demand for life insurance as seen in previous literature and both estimates and predicts the demand for the adoption of life insurance using these techniques. Previous studies used diverse perspectives, like actuarial and life span, in order to understand the demand for life insurance, though these approaches have shown inconsistent findings. Employing two theoretical backgrounds-ecological systemic theory and artificial intellectual methodology-this book explores a better estimation and a prediction of the demand for life insurance and will be of interest to academics and students of insurance, financial planning, and risk management.

Insurance Era - Risk, Governance, and the Privatization of Security in Postwar America (Hardcover): Caley Horan Insurance Era - Risk, Governance, and the Privatization of Security in Postwar America (Hardcover)
Caley Horan
R1,035 Discovery Miles 10 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Actuarial thinking is everywhere in contemporary America, an often unnoticed byproduct of the postwar insurance industry's political and economic influence. Calculations of risk permeate our institutions, influencing how we understand and manage crime, education, medicine, finance, and other social issues. Caley Horan's remarkable book charts the social and economic power of private insurers since 1945, arguing that these institutions' actuarial practices played a crucial and unexplored role in insinuating the social, political, and economic frameworks of neoliberalism into everyday life. Analyzing insurance marketing, consumption, investment, and regulation, Horan asserts that postwar America's obsession with safety and security fueled the exponential expansion of the insurance industry and the growing importance of risk management in other fields. Horan shows that the rise and dissemination of neoliberal values did not happen on its own: they were the result of a project to unsocialize risk, shrinking the state's commitment to providing support, and heaping burdens upon the people often least capable of bearing them. Insurance Era is a sharply researched and fiercely written account of how and why private insurance and its actuarial market logic came to be so deeply lodged in American visions of social welfare.

Michel Denuit, Donatien Hainaut, Julien Trufin
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book summarizes the state of the art in tree-based methods for insurance: regression trees, random forests and boosting methods. It also exhibits the tools which make it possible to assess the predictive performance of tree-based models. Actuaries need these advanced analytical tools to turn the massive data sets now at their disposal into opportunities. The exposition alternates between methodological aspects and numerical illustrations or case studies. All numerical illustrations are performed with the R statistical software. The technical prerequisites are kept at a reasonable level in order to reach a broad readership. In particular, master's students in actuarial sciences and actuaries wishing to update their skills in machine learning will find the book useful. This is the second of three volumes entitled Effective Statistical Learning Methods for Actuaries. Written by actuaries for actuaries, this series offers a comprehensive overview of insurance data analytics with applications to P&C, life and health insurance.

InsurTech: A Legal and Regulatory View (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Pierpaolo Marano, Kyriaki Noussia InsurTech: A Legal and Regulatory View (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Pierpaolo Marano, Kyriaki Noussia
R3,136 Discovery Miles 31 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This Volume of the AIDA Europe Research Series on Insurance Law and Regulation explores the key trends in InsurTech and the potential legal and regulatory issues that accompany them. There is a proliferation of ideas and concepts within InsurTech that will fundamentally change the market in the next few years. These innovations have the potential to change the way the insurance industry works and alter the relationships between customers and insurers, resulting in insurance products that are more closely aligned to individual preferences and priced more appropriately to the risk. Increasing use of technology in the insurance sector is having both a disruptive and transformative impact on areas including product development, distribution, modelling, underwriting and claims and administration practice. The result is a new industry, known as InsurTech. But while the insurance market looks to technology for greater efficiency, regulators are beginning to raise concerns about managing potential risks. The first part of the book examines technological innovations relevant for insurance, such as FinTech, InsurTech, Sharing Economy, and the Internet of Things. The second part then gathers contributions on insurance contract law in a digitalized world, while the third part focuses on cyber insurance and robots. Last but not least, the fourth part of the book discusses legal and ethical questions regarding autonomous vehicles and transportation, including the shipping industry, as well as their impact on the insurance sector and civil liability. Written by legal scholars and practitioners, the book offers international, comparative and European perspectives. The Chapters "FinTech, InsurTech and the Regulators" by Viktoria Chatzara, "Smart Contracts in Insurance. A Law and Futurology Perspective" by Angelo Borselli and "Room for Compulsory Product Liability Insurance in the European Union for Smart Robots?" by Aysegul Bugra are available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com. All three open access chapters were funded by BIPAR.

Mohd Ma'Sum Billah
R3,149 Discovery Miles 31 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The growth of Islamic finance today is undeniable given its services, product innovation, performance and achievements, with the Islamic insurance market being no exception; it has retained global market recognition in a parallel platform as Islamic finance moves forward. There is much written regarding the Islamic insurance system, but rarely do researchers present the various Islamic insurance products and their structures in one collective place. This book is a timely addition in meeting contemporary market demands by providing a much-needed overview of the Islamic insurance products and their Shari'ah compliant structures. This book would be of interest to academics, researchers, students and professionals who are seeking to understand the products offered.

ERM and QRM in Life Insurance - An Actuarial Primer (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Ermanno Pitacco ERM and QRM in Life Insurance - An Actuarial Primer (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Ermanno Pitacco
R1,634 Discovery Miles 16 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book deals with Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and, in particular, Quantitative Risk Management (QRM) in life insurance business. Constituting a "bridge" between traditional actuarial mathematics and insurance risk management processes, its purpose is to provide advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the Actuarial Sciences, Finance and Economics with the basics of ERM (in general) and QRM applied to life insurance business. The main topics dealt with are: general issues on ERM, risk management tools for life insurance and life annuities, deterministic and stochastic analysis of the behaviour of a portfolio fund, application of sensitivity testing to assess ranges of results of interest, stress testing to assess the impact of extreme scenarios, and the product development process for life annuity products.

Structured Dependence between Stochastic Processes (Hardcover): Tomasz R. Bielecki, Jacek Jakubowski, Mariusz Nieweglowski Structured Dependence between Stochastic Processes (Hardcover)
Tomasz R. Bielecki, Jacek Jakubowski, Mariusz Nieweglowski
R3,204 Discovery Miles 32 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The relatively young theory of structured dependence between stochastic processes has many real-life applications in areas including finance, insurance, seismology, neuroscience, and genetics. With this monograph, the first to be devoted to the modeling of structured dependence between random processes, the authors not only meet the demand for a solid theoretical account but also develop a stochastic processes counterpart of the classical copula theory that exists for finite-dimensional random variables. Presenting both the technical aspects and the applications of the theory, this is a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the field, as well as for graduate students in pure and applied mathematics programs. Numerous theoretical examples are included, alongside examples of both current and potential applications, aimed at helping those who need to model structured dependence between dynamic random phenomena.
