Big Little Hotel - Small Hotels Designed by Architects (Paperback): Donna Kacmar Big Little Hotel - Small Hotels Designed by Architects (Paperback)
Donna Kacmar
R986 Discovery Miles 9 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book showcases twenty different small hotels, all located in the US, designed by architects who use light and materials in interesting and intentional ways. The designs also deliberately connect to their local history, context, or land - in many cases all three. Both the architecture and the operations harmonize with the place, whether that is a bustling city, small town, or natural area. Many are new buildings but some are adaptive reuse projects or renovations of historic properties, extending the connectivity of the place into the future. A condensed history of lodging helps to place the many typologies and histories of hospitality in relationship to world events and includes the many factors that influence hotel development such as business practices, technology, and even politics. Hotels are influenced by larger trends and innovations in hospitality such as the emergence of a variety of creative possibilities for future travel. A final chapter includes speculation on travel trends and encourages us all to wander more intentionally.

The Collected Letters of A. W. N. Pugin - Volume 4: 1849-1850 (Hardcover): Margaret Belcher The Collected Letters of A. W. N. Pugin - Volume 4: 1849-1850 (Hardcover)
Margaret Belcher
R8,979 Discovery Miles 89 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The importance of A. W. N. Pugin (1812-52) in the history of the Gothic Revival, in the development of ecclesiology, in the origins of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and in architectural theory is incontestable. A leading British architect who was also a designer of furniture, textiles, stained glass, metalwork, and ceramics, he is one of the most significant figures of the mid-nineteenth century and one of the greatest designers. His correspondence is important because it provides more insight into the man and more information about his work than any other source. This volume, the fourth of five, contains letters from 1849 and 1850. Happily married, Pugin was more settled in his home at The Grange in Ramsgate in these years than he had ever been before. He completed his long-contemplated book on Floriated Ornament. At first he appears principally as a designer of stained glass, often working for other architects: pre-eminent, he supplies Charles Barry, William Butterfield, R. C. Carpenter, G. G. Scott, for instance. The letters display his knowledge of surviving medieval glass, biblical and historical sources, hagiography, heraldry, iconography, besides revealing his attention to details of composition, texture, colour, the representation of figures, the effects of lighting. Next door to his house, he continued to build the church of St Augustine, which was ready for opening in August 1850. Later that year, two public events quickened the pace of Pugin's life: the Roman Catholic hierarchy was restored in England, and the Great Exhibition was announced for 1851. Personally insulted because of his religion, Pugin defended his embattled faith in the ensuing uproar; at the same time he began to make a multitude of designs for his colleagues to execute: together they produced what came to be called the Medieval Court, the outstanding display in the exhibition and a masterpiece of lasting influence.

The White Company The Art of Living with White - A Year of Inspiration (Hardcover): Chrissie Rucker & The White Company The White Company The Art of Living with White - A Year of Inspiration (Hardcover)
Chrissie Rucker & The White Company
R886 Discovery Miles 8 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the author of the home decorating bestseller, For the Love of White, comes an inspirational and informative guide to creating a welcoming home through the seasons using a white and neutral palette. 'Unsurprisingly for a book created by The White Company Founder Chrissie Rucker, this showcases 10 stylist interiors - divided into chapters named after the four seasons - each with a high concentration of white, be it on walls, furniture, textiles or accessories. What it demonstrates is that white need not be bland. Taking a close look at each composed and elegant case study, Chrissie points out the elements that make a room interesting, why a fabric or piece of furniture elevates a scheme, or how the simple addition of a table setting might render it the perfect serene and welcoming space to host a dinner party. The home rituals dispersed throughout provide useful tips on how to refresh your house as the seasons change.' - Christabel Chubb, House & Garden 'White Company founder Chrissie Rucker's new coffee-table book offers plenty of ideas for decorating your home in her signature, soothing style.' The Telegraph, Best Home Christmas Gifts 2022 'Chrissie Rucker, founder of The White Company shows how people use shades of white to great effect in their own homes. ' Good Housekeeping 'An absolute delight.' Woman & Home 'These homes will inspire anyone who loves tranquil surroundings.' Sunday Express 'Beautiful.' Grazia 'I love a home to feel warm, inviting, personal and lived-in - and mastering how to decorate with white and neutrals is a wonderful way to achieve this.' - CHRISSIE RUCKER In her much-anticipated second book, The Art Of Living With White, Chrissie Rucker, Founder of The White Company, explores 10 inspirational homes that illustrate beautifully different ways to use white and neutrals through the seasons. The homes vary in size, style and location - from a minimalist city pied-a-terre to a New England-style country house - but what unites them all is the welcoming, stylish and calm feel that their owners have each created. The homes are grouped into the four seasons and each chapter ends with a summary of seasonal rituals that will work in any home. A concluding chapter - Inspiration & Resources - considers finding your own style, how to create a good balance between work and home in interior spaces, the art of simple entertaining and the importance of scent and touch in a truly comfortable home. Praise for The White Company: For the Love of White 'A testament to the power of neutrals' - House and Garden 'A visual feast with a passion for all things white at its heart' - House Beautiful

Designers and Creators of the '80s - '90s - Furniture and Interiors (English, French, Hardcover): Patrick Favardin,... Designers and Creators of the '80s - '90s - Furniture and Interiors (English, French, Hardcover)
Patrick Favardin, Guy Bloch-Champfort
R1,470 Discovery Miles 14 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In line with the works on decorators of the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s, this book plunges us into the world of '80s and '90s. These have witnessed unprecedented experiments in the world of design and architecture. Composed of a rich introduction which gives a synoptic vision and 38 monographs that describe its many faces, this book makes and exceptionally creative period intelligible, and reveals through an abundant iconography, often unpublished, its formidable aesthetic richness. A new generation of designers stands out; among them Shiro Kuramata, Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Bob Wilson, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti. All regenerate creation by refusing the elitism of their predecessors and by favouring the use of new materials. Some turn to recovery, such as the Creative Salvage group, and offer inventive and provocative furniture thanks to welding and assembly. Others, gathered in Italy around Ettore Sottsass and Memphis, combine unexpected colours and patterns to the playful use of plastic laminate. Sliding until the end of the '90s, the achievements presented in this book mark the desire for a dialogue between artistic references with a new relationship to the industrial aspect, at the dawn of the 21st century and its technological innovations. Text in English and French.

Axel Vervoordt began purchasing antiques in his teens and has steadily built a vast collection of exquisite objects from around the world. He is renowned for his prestigious exhibitions at major world antique fairs, including the New York Design Fair and TEFAF Maastricht. His interior designs, in both traditional and modern settings around the world, combine antiques from all continents with a Zen sensuality, and they blend the old with the new to create harmonious interiors. His unusual pairings may include Chinese porcelain with English furniture or a Roman relic alongside a 1930s Flemish painting.
The extent of Vervoordt's talent is revealed in the twenty-three homes in Europe and the United States presented here through Christian Sarramon's photographs. The variety of styles reflects Vervoordt's eclecticism, and his authentic and welcoming interiors are inspirational treasure troves. From the rustic charm of a Swiss chalet to the classic finesse of a Bordeaux chateau to the modern allure of a Miami mansion, Vervoordt's creations are perfectly in tune with the character and history of each space.

Once upon a time a pharmacy was a small place with a cosy yet patrician air, where the all-knowing master of medicine would dispense pills, mix potions and generally perform the offices of a scientific shaman. However, in recent years the nature of the trade has undergone a profound transformation and the majority of these establishments now provide a wide range of health services, including off-the-shelf medicines for minor ailments, prophylactic products and such lifestyle items as cosmetics and health foods. These developments are reflected in modern designs for pharmacy buildings. The homely feel of the past has largely vanished - modern stores are still welcoming but in a more efficient, commercial and brightly lit way. This book presents a variety of such projects, comprehensively illustrated with over 300 photos and plans. There are also experts' thoughts on such topics as interior architecture, building expenses and the basics of planning laws as applied to these buildings.

A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present - A Survey of the Modern Style in Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, and Photography (Paperback, Second Edition)
Ann Ferebee, Jeff Byles
R1,151 Discovery Miles 11 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A unique cross-disciplinary survey of design history, A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present offers a concise overview of the modern milestones of architecture, interior design, graphic design, product design, and photography from the Crystal Palace of 1851 to the iPhone at the turn of the twenty-first century. This abundantly illustrated volume traces modern design across continents and cultures, highlighting the key movements and design traditions that have shaped the world around us.

From the whirlwind of innovation that gripped Victorian England at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, the book details design s rich evolution through more than a century and a half, including Art Nouveau s breathtaking ornament, the new vision of the Bauhaus, the rise of the International Style, and postmodernism and contemporary currents in the graphic arts and landscape architecture. Major design figures are framed against a background of evolving aesthetic idioms. Especially attuned to how technological innovations catalyzed daringly conceived skyscrapers, bridges, and cantilever chairs, the authors also chart the impact of technical advances in the disciplines of industrial design, typography, and photographic portraiture.

This new edition of a classic text first published in 1970 expands coverage to include developments in design over the last forty years, with emphasis on its global reach, the impact of the digital revolution, and new trends in sustainable design that will shape the century to come."

Home - Lived Experiences - Philosophical Reflections (Paperback, 1st ed. 2022): John Murungi, Linda Ardito Home - Lived Experiences - Philosophical Reflections (Paperback, 1st ed. 2022)
John Murungi, Linda Ardito
R3,242 Discovery Miles 32 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the lived experience of being at home as well as being homeless. Being at home or not is typically a matter of being at a place or not, where such a place is carved out of space and designated as such. It is a place that is both empirical and trans-empirical. When one is at home or not at home, one typically has in mind an inhabited place. To inhabit or not to inhabit it is to find oneself in a place that has an affective presence or absence. In either case, affectivity points to a lived place where lived experience is constituted and displayed. Thus, in this context, affectivity becomes more than the subject of empirical psychology. If psychology were to have access, it would be in the context of phenomenological or existential psychology - a psychology that has its roots in the sensible world and, hence, a psychology that expresses an aesthetic dimension. Each of the contributors in this book extends an invitation to the readers to participate in constituting, extending, and sharing with others the sense of either being at home or of being homeless. This book appeals to students, researchers as well as general interest readers.

At a time when modern architecture has become a means for cities to up their game and raise their cultural profile on the world stage, Toronto is coming into its own. Fully entrenched in a design renaissance that is dramatically changing the face and space of the city, Toronto is now a welcome playground for celebrated local talent and international star architects. While some cities can be immediately defined by a specific style, Toronto is distinguished instead by a fusion of contemporary architecture, heritage preservation and sustainable urban design. A true mosaic of architecture and culture, Toronto is a city learning to recognise and celebrate its diversity - it is a city set to rediscover itself.

D"esign City: Toronto" showcases over thirty exemplary contemporary interior and architectural projects, both complete and underway. These range from hip restaurants and bars by Toronto-based practices to major institutional buildings completed by the likes of Will Alsop, Behnisch, Behnisch & Partners, Foster and Partners, Frank Gehry, Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg and Daniel Libeskind. Written in an engaging and lively manner, the book is beautifully illustrated with new photography by Tom Arban. It also provides a neighbourhood overview and biographies of featured designers. It should appeal as much to design savvy individuals as local and foreign archi-tourists who are as interested in discovering - or rediscovering - the dynamic evolution of this exciting city.

Interior Finishes & Fittings for Historic Building Conservation (Hardcover): M. Forsyth Interior Finishes & Fittings for Historic Building Conservation (Hardcover)
M. Forsyth
R1,668 Discovery Miles 16 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Interior Finishes & Fittings for Historic Building Conservation" complements Materials & Skills for Historic Building Conservation, combining the history and application of each material with current knowledge of maintenance and conservation techniques. Of direct practical application in the field, it takes the reader through the process of conserving historic interior finishes, covering everything from decorative plasterwork, joinery and paint colour; to chimneypieces, lighting and fire safety management.

The series is particularly aimed at construction professionals - architects, decorative arts historians and specifiers, surveyors, engineers - as well as postgraduate building conservation students and undergraduate architects and surveyors as specialist or optional course reading. The series is also of value to other professional groups such as commissioning client bodies, managers and advisors, and interested individuals involved in house refurbishment or setting up a building preservation trust. While there is a focus on UK practice, most of the content is of relevance overseas (just as UK conservation courses attract many overseas students, for example from India, China, Australia and the USA).

The chapters are written by leading conservators, historians, architects, and related professionals, who together reflect the interdisciplinary nature of conservation work.

This volume on the historic interior is the fourth of a series on Historic Building Conservation that combine conservation philosophy in the built environment with knowledge of traditional materials and structural and constructional conservation techniques and technology: Understanding Historic Building ConservationStructures & Construction in Historic Building ConservationMaterials & Skills for Historic Building ConservationInterior Finishes & Fittings for Historic Building Conservation

While substantial publications exist on each of the subject areas - some by the authors of the Historic Building Conservation series - few individuals and practices have ready access to all of these or the time to read them in detail. The aim of the series is to introduce each aspect of conservation and to provide concise, basic and up-to-date knowledge within four volumes, sufficient for the professional to appreciate the subject better and to know where to seek further help.
