Jazz Improvisation for Keyboard Players is a straightforward, no-nonsense improvisation series. It deals with creating melodies, using the left hand, pianistic approaches to soloing, scale choices for improvisation and much more.
A deeply researched biography of the great French organist, who composed some of the best-loved works in the organ repertory -- and the masterful Requiem. Maurice Durufle: The Man and His Music is a new biography of the great French organist and composer (1902-86), and the most comprehensive in any language. James E. Frazier traces Durufle's musical training, his studies withTournemire and Vierne, and his career as an organist, church musician, composer, recitalist, Conservatoire professor, and orchestral musician. Frazier also examines the career and contributions of Durufle's wife, the formidable organist Marie-Madeleine Durufle-Chevalier. Durufle brought the church's unique language of plainsong into a compelling liaison with the secular harmonies of the modern French school (as typified by Debussy, Ravel, and Dukas)in works for his own instrument and in his widely loved masterpiece, the Requiem Op. 9 for soloists, chorus, organ, and orchestra. Drawing on the accounts of those who knew Durufle personally as well as on Frazier's own detailed research, Maurice Durufle offers a broad sketch of this modest and elusive man, widely recognized today for having created some of the greatest works in the organ repertory -- and the masterful Requiem. James E. Frazier holds advanced degrees in philosophy, organ, theology, and sacred music from St. Alphonsus College, Mt. St. Alphonsus Seminary, Hartt School of Music, the Yale University Divinity School, and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. He served Episcopal churches in Hartford, Connecticut, and St. Paul, Minnesota, as organist and director of music. For ten years he was director of music for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

This delightful set of practical miniature arrangements of hymn tunes for organ is useful throughout the church year and is accessible to the average church organist. These short pieces not only enhance church services, but also prove invaluable to the church musician looking for something fresh to use during services. The styles of miniatures, which last anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute in duration, are sufficiently varied to maintain interest: some settings are meditative, while others are fanfares, and they can be used during various parts of the service. The book includes a preface that discusses practical usage of the miniatures, citing some examples from te Velde's own experience. It also includes a liturgical index and an index of first lines for the convenience of the organist.

With clear and easy-to-understand exercises, The Piano Handbook is perfect for anyone interested in learning the piano. It provides fresh material and techniques, and gives brand-new players everything they need to learn and enjoy the piano. This book's innovative tutorial approach to piano covers classical and contemporary music styles in an integrated way. Instead of limiting students to one type of music and one style of playing, author Carl Humphries draws connections between various genres and techniques, highlighting the principles and history they share. Performance, improvisation, and composition are treated as interrelated skills that can be learned together. Featuring a mix of repertoire and freshly composed study pieces, The Piano Handbook demonstrates that learning different kinds of music at the same time can be a positive and enriching experience.

The Thirty-three Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, Op. 120,
represent Beethoven's most extraordinary achievement in the art of
variation-writing. In their originality and power of invention,
they stand beside other late Beethoven masterpieces such as the
Ninth Symphony, the Missa Solemnis, and the last quartets. William
Kinderman's study of the compositional history of the work includes
the first extended investigation and reconstruction of the sketches
and drafts, and reveals, contrary to earlier views of its
chronology, that it was actually begun in 1819, then put aside, and
completed in 1822-3. Kinderman also provides an analytical
discussion of the complete work, and he demonstrates how insights
derived from a close study of the sketches can illuminate
Beethoven's compositional ideas and attitudes and contribute
substantially to a better understanding of this massive and complex
set of variations.
Piano Duets: Classical Composers presents varied and accessible repertoire for every duet player. The collection includes attractive new arrangements of orchestral and chamber gems, alongside new editions of original works written specifically for piano duet. You'll find sonata movements by less well-known composers of the period, Clementi and J.C.F. Bach, as well as Beethoven's complete Sonata in D major, one of the few original duet sonatas written by the composer. The volume is concluded with a light and attractive Minuet and Trio by Haydn, a colourful Theme and Variations by Mozart, and a graceful and flowing arrangement of Schubert's Entr'acte Music from Rosamunde. Ranging from the intimate to the virtuosic, these pieces are ideal for duettists looking for new recital material as well as those beginning to explore the medium. |
