The best-selling author of Leonardo da Vinci and Steve Jobs returns. In 2012, Nobel Prize winning scientist Jennifer Doudna hit upon an invention that will transform the future of the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as CRISPR, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions. It has already been deployed to cure deadly diseases, fight the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, and make inheritable changes in the genes of babies. But what does that mean for humanity? Should we be hacking our own DNA to make us less susceptible to disease? Should we democratise the technology that would allow parents to enhance their kids? After discovering this CRISPR, Doudna is now wrestling these even bigger issues. THE CODE BREAKERS is an examination of how life as we know it is about to change - and a brilliant portrayal of the woman leading the way.

'A national treasure' Daily Express To mark and celebrate National Hedgehog Awareness Week, Pam Ayres has written a less-than-fond farewell from perspective of the 'last hedgehog left on earth' - a delightful, hilarious and thought-provoking elegy to that most beloved inhabitant of the British countryside, the common hedgehog. Pam Ayres' spiky and wonderful creation reminds us that unless we take steps to prevent it, they will soon be far from 'common' indeed: beautifully illustrated by Alice Tait, the poem The Hedgehog sees our hero tell of all the terrible ends his family come to at our own hands - and exactly what we can still do to keep them alive, and see them thrive once more. 'The Last Hedgehog is a little book, but it's an important book and it's a profound book' Graham Norton

Jonathan Raban
R253 Discovery Miles 2 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

On 11 June 2011, three days short of his sixth-ninth birthday, Jonathan Raban suffered a stroke which left him unable to use the right side of his body, wheelchair-bound in a rehab facility and endlessly frustrated by his newfound physical limitations. As he resisted the overbearing ministrations of the nurses helping him along the road to recovery, Raban began to reflect not only on the measure of his own life but the extraordinary story of his parents’ early marriage, conducted for three years by letter while his father fought in the Second World War.

Timing (Paperback): Alistair McGowan Timing (Paperback)
Alistair McGowan
R283 Discovery Miles 2 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Impressionist Alistair McGowan debuts his first play Timing at the Kings Head Theatre starting from the 30th September, starring Dean Gaffney (Robbie from Eastenders) and regular theatre star Edward Baker-Duly. It seems that McGowan, famed by his sketch show Big Impression on the BBC has decided to return to the theatre after his work in Cabaret (Lyric Theatre), Little Shop of Horrors (New Ambassadors Theatre) and The Mikado (Gielgud Theatre) but this time as a playwright. Teaming up with director Tamara Harvey, Timing is all about a young guy called Julian Mann (Baker-Duly) who sets off to work one morning only to find his ex-girlfriend of 5 years is at his workplace, but the complication arises in that they have not spoken since the break-up in which she broke his heart. It is set to go on until 8th November, and if McGowan's previous work is anything to go by it should be a comic hit. It should also be interesting to see how the comedian tackles more serious topics as well. --Review from spoonfed.co.uk

Peak Beyond Peak - The Unpublished Scottish Journeys of Isobel Wylie Hutchison (Paperback): Hazel Buchan Cameron Peak Beyond Peak - The Unpublished Scottish Journeys of Isobel Wylie Hutchison (Paperback)
Hazel Buchan Cameron; Introduction by Kenneth Maclean; Edited by Hazel Buchan Cameron; Isobel Wylie Hutchison
R389 R317 Discovery Miles 3 170 Save R72 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Isobel Wylie Hutchison was many things: a botanist, traveller, poet and artist. She travelled solo throughout the arctic collecting plant samples, wrote and published extensive volumes of essays and poetry, and was - in short - one of the most remarkable Scottish figures of her time. However, since her death in 1982 her legacy has been forgotten compared with her male counterparts. Now Isobel can speak for herself again. While better known for her solo journeys across the Arctic, these essays detail Isobel's journeys across Scotland, including visits to Skye, John O' Groats and the various literary shrines across the country. Written with characteristic wit and a keen interest in both science and myth and folklore, the essays serve as important cultural markers not just of Scotland as it was and has developed, but of a woman's experience of travelling alone and a testament to the importance of cultural connection, exploration and communication.

The Frank Daniels Trio were a singing, dancing, comedy sensation. A Wow Top of the Bill Socko Frank, the manager, was always on the left. Tony, the comedy man, was always on the right. Both men adored the girl in the middle - the beautiful Sarah. The perfect recipe for an entangled triangle. Sarah yearned for the more exciting Tony to declare his love, but it was the stable Frank who made the first move. She accepted. And so they married and lived happily - well, almost - ever after. That was in the 60's. Music changed. Styles changed. The trio disbanded. Sarah often thought about Tony. Tony wondered about Sarah. And when, years later, the three friends re-unite, memories and yearnings return - this time offering a second chance for true happiness. Will they dare to take it? With stand-up comedy and 'grumpy old men', this emotional roller coaster of a play will confirm the old adage that 'truth will out'.
