This is a joke book – a collection of real conversations I’ve had with my offspring, or that they’ve had with me, mostly against my will. I started keeping records for my own entertainment when they began to talk properly.
Two-year-old: What’s that? I regretted teaching them to speak once pre-adolescence and Covid lockdowns arrived – life phases with equivalent survival strategies and effects.
Nine-year-old: Good news! While you were in your meeting, I finished your puzzle!
Thirteen-year-old: I don’t like boys. I hope it never ends. Life is a set-up, and parenting is the punchline. As my mother once said, ‘I hope one day you have children. And then we’ll see who’s laughing.’
As experienced, self-taught recipe developer Karl Tessendorf asks, what
kind of name is The Good Stuff for a cookbook? He explains that it’s
not just a name but a celebration of the magic of comfort food. From
perfect pastas, pies and Sunday roasts, through blissful bakes, and all
the way to scrummy salads and sides, you will find more than 80 recipes
that will leave your mouth watering as you recall your own happy
comfort food memories. But being the food wizard he is, Karl adds more
taste and panache to those comfort classics than you thought possible.
He encourages you to try your hand at your own improvisation. Most
importantly, he wants you to share these meals at a table with your
nearest and dearest, accompanied by a few drinks and great conversation
— because that’s The Good Stuff. It’s about human connection, great
food and the memories they create. So here’s to The Good Stuff!
In Timeless South African, renowned cook and food writer Ilse van der
Merwe has compiled a list of the top 101 iconic South African dishes –
meals not only seen as ‘heritage food’, but dishes that are still
relevant, recognisable, loved and prepared in many South African
communities today. Well-researched and based on formal and informal
discussions with chefs, members of the public and food lovers of
different backgrounds, this book celebrates the country’s diverse
cultures and culinary traditions, highlighting the history of each
recipe as well as the modern ways in which they have been reinvented.
The dishes in this book – whether humble or celebratory – are paired
with classically styled and vibrant photos. Do you know your vetkoek
from your amagwinya? Or your koeksisters from your koesisters? And do
you know the interesting histories of bobotie, the gatsby, hertzoggies
and Durban naan? The more we share our food and our stories, the more
we’ll be able to celebrate what unites us: being South African.

“Kwantu means home” – Vusumzi Ngxande. Journey Kwantu is inspired by Vusumzi Ngxande’s popular podcast of the same name that delves into South African spiritual identity and beliefs and shows how it has evolved over hundreds of years. The book is rooted in extensive historical research, lived experiences and interviews with healers, teachers and ordinary people trying to live out their truth. With a unique ability to simplify complex issues and ask taboo questions, the author endeavours to answers questions like, “Who are we?” and “How did we come to believe what we believe?” In the process he deals with issues he has struggled with on his own spiritual journey, such as death and the afterlife and the authority of the Ancestors vs the Power of God to more practical matters like performing rituals in urban areas and understanding lineage and its impact on one’s spiritual life. Deeply perceptive and engaging, Journey Kwantu offers a guide and spiritual sustenance to African believers.

Selfies, Sexts, and Smartphones is the book every teenager (and their
parents) should read. At least, that was true seven years ago. The
digital world moves at breakneck speed. Today’s teens have to navigate
AI, deep fakes, misinformation, and so much more. Meanwhile, the law
struggles to keep up, leaving plenty of hidden legal pitfalls. If fully
developed adult brains struggle with it, what hope does a teenager’s
freshly baked prefrontal cortex have?

We think of time as scarce and finite. We say we 'don't have enough time', that 'time is against us', and that 'time waits for no one'. But what if we could make time feel more abundant? How can we make time work for rather than against us? In Time Hacks, Dr Ian Taylor - a world-leading expert in the science of the human mind - draws on the latest psychological research to reveal how we can develop a healthier relationship to time; one where we can break free of the cycle of boredom and mania, be more productive, and bring balance to all parts of our lives. In the process, he demonstrates why all difficult tasks should be done early in the morning, the detrimental effects of relying on willpower, how to use 'be' goals to sustain motivation, and why we should all build 'dead' time into our schedules. Fascinating and eye-opening, Time Hacks will show you how to use the power of psychology to feel less time pressured, boost your mental and physical health, and break free from the tyranny of your alarm clock.

Most of us approach ambition from a place of pain and proving ourselves, while trying to fit into outdated corporate structures that don't represent who we are, or who we want to be. In The Ambition Trap, Amina AlTai encourages you to move from an ambition driven by our core wounds, aka 'wounded striving' towards 'healthy ambition' which rewards a life of balance and integrity. Having worked for years as a coach with clients from business leaders to companies such as Google, Deloitte, Slack and Cartier, celebrities and sports people, let Amina show you how giving up the hustle is key to success, why 'girl bossing' doesn't work if you're headed for burnout, and what healthy ambition looks like in the modern world of quiet quitting.
Son of a Preacher Man is a story about a loving but fraught relationship between a father and son in apartheid South Africa. The father was Bruce Evans, a Jewish-born, evangelical Anglican clergyman who became Bishop of Port Elizabeth. His children grew up in the 1960s and ’70s in a world awash with chapter-and-verse ‘born-again’ Christianity that included ‘talking-in-tongues’, ‘divine healings’ and exorcism. Gavin, his middle son, who narrates the tale, eventually broke with the religious beliefs he’d inherited and threw himself into the ‘struggle’ for democracy while keeping his father at arms’ length. But they reconciled shortly before Bruce’s death from motor neuron disease in 1993. The book delves into the psyches of both men and examines how it played out in the 33 years they had together.
A book based on personal journeys during challenging times. These experiences required me to make choices – some more complex than others. The most significant choice I made was to commit to the fact that the only way out of a challenge, is to get through the challenge. Shortcuts almost always resulted in additional challenges. On my journey I also realized that your capabilities need to be larger than the challenge you face. I often made the mistake to think “I can do this by myself”. The African proverb “If you want to walk fast, walk alone! But if you want to walk far, walk together!” is true in choosing resilience. I also realized that every person can only be resilient within their own capabilities. This book provides practical advice supported by research.
What if the key to a happier, more balanced life was already inside
your head?

Culinary icon, founder of the Kogi food truck, New York Times bestselling author of L.A. Son, and star of Netflix's The Chef Show shares 100 flavor-packed recipes that empower you to eat healthy—or, at least, healthier—without ditching your go-to favorites. Built on a foundation of balance and compassion, The Choi of Cooking is Roy Choi’s magnum opus, reflecting his personal journey of cooking, living, and learning from mistakes. When Choi realized that falling victim to his greasy cravings was not sustainable, he began to eat more nutritious foods—but he did it his way, to build a more realistic lifestyle not based on extreme dieting or deprivation. The Choi of Cooking focuses on foods that fuel your body, and Choi meets readers wherever they are, recognizing that eating healthy isn’t all or nothing. Yes, that Kimchi Philly Cheesesteak recipe is real, and exactly as good as it sounds. But Choi also can make vegetables the star of the meal with Calabrian Chile Broccoli Rabe and Roasted Cauliflower Steaks with Harissa and Garlic Herbed Butter. And there are comforting, naturally vegetable-heavy rice and noodle bowls like Cold Bibim Noodle “Salad” and Veggie on the Lo Mein Spaghetti. Since this book is about taking steps, not leaps, there’s also plenty of inspiration for when you’re craving something indulgent, like Crispy Mashed Potatoes, but with "Power Up" modifications to make it healthier when you're ready. Reaching for healthier foods is like flexing a muscle, and the work begins with having the confidence to cook at all. To encourage readers to take those first steps in the kitchen, Choi shares his culinary philosophy, including bits of wisdom and stories that expand on his approach to food. The Choi of Cooking is more than a collection of recipes; it’s a guide to creating a more balanced life.
