The Baboon And The Spider - A True Story (Paperback): Jenny Hewett Smith The Baboon And The Spider - A True Story (Paperback)
Jenny Hewett Smith
R460 Discovery Miles 4 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The boy was born in 1938, under the majestic Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, to a strong mother and an absent father. The boy was known by his nick-name, Tokkie. This memoir makes one laugh at Tokkie’s antics and the trouble they get him into. At other times, one cries with the boy who is often cold and hungry, and has to grow up too quickly in post war South Africa.

To add insult to injury, his step-father buys a baboon that Tokkie has to feed, even though the baboon often bites him and never allows him to win the tree-scaling races. When Tokkie is grown, he has an encounter with God that changes his life and his name as he becomes Pastor Theodor Jerry Hewett. Miracles take place and his heartfelt cry of ‘God can do it again’, resonates throughout this narrative.

The story includes the funny, yet sometimes heartbreaking journey of the ministry in South Africa, all the while capturing the heartbeat of Africa.

An Integral Foundation For Addiction Treatment - Beyond The Biopsychosocial Model (Paperback): Guy Du Plessis An Integral Foundation For Addiction Treatment - Beyond The Biopsychosocial Model (Paperback)
Guy Du Plessis
R953 Discovery Miles 9 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Currently there is such a cornucopia of conflicting theories in the field of addiction studies that it has become exceedingly difficult for treatment providers, therapists, and policymakers to integrate this vast field of knowledge into effective treatment. Since such a chaotic overabundance of treatment theories, styles, and definitions cloud the field of addictionology, many therapists claim their field is in need of a paradigm shift.

In the last 20 years an integrative and compound model has emerged known as the biopsychosocial model, but without a solid and comprehensive meta-framework, syncretistic confusion can result when therapists pick and choose techniques without direction or an overall rationale. To address this problem, Guy du Plessis applies integral theory as a conceptual framework for understanding addiction, as well as a meta-therapeutic framework for therapists. The integral foundation of addiction outlined in this book provides researchers, academics, treatment providers, policy makers, and therapists with a conceptual architectonic of addiction and its treatment that is integrative, inclusive, and practical.

An Integral Foundation for Addiction Treatment belongs on the shelf of every addiction treatment therapist, and anyone else who is impacted or influenced by the topic.

Your Security In South Africa (Paperback): Craig B. Roseveare Your Security In South Africa (Paperback)
Craig B. Roseveare 4
R499 Discovery Miles 4 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is primarily about securing your home against potential unwanted intruders and keeping your family safe.

"The rise in violent crime affecting my country stems directly from an increase in criminal behavior and farm attacks, resulting in loss of innocent lives in my country. The message in this book goes out to all innocent, law-abiding citizens of South Africa. It is time to take a stand and prepare yourselves against becoming victims of the lawlessness plaguing our country. The authorities themselves face great challenges, numerous obstacles, and insufficient support. As a result, we are losing the battle against all crime and, particularly, violent crime. It is now up to individual citizens to change their mind-set and become unbeatable adversaries of the criminal element.

I don’t advocate vigilantism or breaking the law in order to achieve this. What I suggest instead is that people need to develop the mental and physical skills to avoid violence in the first place and then, if necessary, use a level of violence higher than that which would be imposed on them in a conflict situation." - Craig B. Roseveare

Joanne Fedler
R514 R466 Discovery Miles 4 660 Save R48 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We either think our lives are so special that everyone should be interested in what's happened to us, or so ordinary that we can't imagine anyone would care. The truth lies somewhere in between: yes, we are all special, and no, people will not care-unless we write with them in mind. Joanne Fedler, a beloved writing teacher and mentor, has written Your Story to help all people, even those who don't necessarily identify as "writers," value their life stories and write them in such a way that they transcend the personal and speak into a universal story. She shows how to write from your life, but for the benefit of others. Filled with practical wisdom and tools, this book tackles: - mind-set issues that prevent us from writing - ways to develop trust (in yourself, the process, the mystery) - triggers or prompts to elicit our own stories - Joanne's original techniques for "lifewriting," developed over a decade of teaching and mentoring ... and much more "Joanne understands the writer's loneliness," says one such writer whose life she's touched, the award-winning author Nava Semel. "In this book she has created a menu of encouraging possibilities on how to overcome our fears and dig deep into our souls, so that our true voice can emerge."

The focus is on developing a godly character as readers apply the truths discussed in this Bible study in their own lives, in accordance with the core message of Galatians 5:22-23. Dr Mol gives detailed advice and guidance, but also provides opportunities for readers to discover the answers for themselves from the Bible. He discusses the nine parts of the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – as well as the fruit we bear as believers.

The 20 studies in A Fruitful Life are ideal for group study as well as personal study, and will encourage readers not to be satisfied with a life that represents anything less than a godly character in all areas of life.

It is a book which shifts from mourning to love, from poems which are essentially narrative to lyrical prose. Gardening in the Dark, like Denis Hirson's previous work, essentially sets before us the rich and strange, emotion-filled harvest of memory.

Racist Culture - Philosophy And The Politics Of Meaning (Paperback): D.T. Goldberg Racist Culture - Philosophy And The Politics Of Meaning (Paperback)
D.T. Goldberg 1
R1,564 Discovery Miles 15 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Racist Culture offers an anti-essentialist and non-reductionist account of racialized discourse and racist expression. Goldberg demonstrates that racial thinking is a function of the transforming categories and conceptions of social subjectivity throughout modernity. He shows that rascisms are often not aberrant or irrational but consistent with prevailing social conceptions, particularly of the reasonable and the normal.

He shows too how this process is being extended and renewed by categories dominant in present day social sciences: "the West"; "the underclass"; and "the primitive". This normalization of racism reflected in the West mirrors South Africa an its use and conception of space.

Goldberg concludes with an extended argument for a pragmatic, antiracist practice.

Everything you need to know about race (but were afraid to ask), previously published in 2015 as Black Brain, White Brain: Is Intelligence Skin Deep?.

In academic journals and on internet message boards, certain scientists and thinkers are laying siege to one of the great taboos. Could it be, they ask, that racism has a rational basis in science? These ideas are no longer limited to the fringe: race-based studies of intelligence have been discussed by thinkers such as Steven Pinker, Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson. If true, it would provide an intellectual foundation for so many of the attitudes that characterise the right wing, justifying inequality and discrimination. Gavin Evans tackles the nature vs nurture debate head-on, examining the latest studies on how intelligence develops and laying out new discoveries in genetics, palaeontology, archaeology and anthropology to unearth the truth about our shared past.

In doing so, Skin Deep demolishes the pernicious myth that our race is our destiny, and instead reveals what really makes us who we are.

To Have & To Hold - The Making Of Same-sex Marriage in South Africa (Paperback): Melanie Judge, Anthony Manion, Shaun de Waal To Have & To Hold - The Making Of Same-sex Marriage in South Africa (Paperback)
Melanie Judge, Anthony Manion, Shaun de Waal
R512 Discovery Miles 5 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

On 30 November 2006, South Africa became the world’s fifth country and Africa’s first to legalise marriage for same-sex couples. To Have & To Hold explores the journey to same-sex marriage with a collection of interviews, essays and documents recognising the multiplicity of viewpoints on the topic, as well as the multiple aspects and efforts that shaped the making of same-sex marriage in South Africa.

It seeks to represent those perspectives by drawing on the opinions of a wide range of experts as well as representing those for whom the right to marry holds the most meaning – the people whose marriages can now be legally recognised. The combination of historical documents, personal reflections and academic and activist analyses of same-sex marriage makes this book invaluable for understanding this historic journey and its legal, social, cultural and religious ramifications.

Nicholas J Clarke, Roger C. Fisher, Marieke C Kuipers
R1,037 Discovery Miles 10 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The richness and diversity of Dutch contributions to the built environment of South Africa remain little-known in the study of twentieth-century architectural history. Between 1902 and 1961 more than seventy Dutch-born émigré architects were active from the Cape to the Highveld, both in major towns and remote areas, and they designed hundreds of buildings and neighborhoods.

A sequel to the acclaimed Eclectic ZA Wilhelmiens: A Shared Dutch Built Heritage in South Africa, Common Ground reveals the great variety of styles and building types from this period, ranging from buildings for communities, religious practice, banking, industry, and civil infrastructure to the evolution of the Pretoria dwelling and low-cost housing.

These contributions are also contentious as they relate to the time of the entrenchment of apartheid. Yet these architects' extant work is an undeniable part of South Africa today and often still in daily service.

This handbook offers a unique decolonial take on the field of Critical Whiteness Studies by rehistoricising and re-spatialising the study of bodies and identities in the world system of coloniality.

Situating the critical study of whiteness as a core intellectual pillar in a broadly based project for racial and social justice, the volume understands whiteness as elaborated in global coloniality through epistemology, ideology and governmentality at the intersections with heteropatriarchy and capitalism. The diverse contributions present Black and other racially diverse scholarship as crucial to the field. The focus of inquiry is expanded beyond Northern Anglophone contexts to challenge centre/margin relations, examining whiteness in the Caribbean, South Africa and the African continent, Asia, the Middle East as well as in the United States and parts of Europe. Providing a transdisciplinary approach and addressing debates about knowledges, black and white subjectivities and newly defensive forms of whiteness, as seen in the rise of the Radical Right, the handbook deepens our understanding of power, place, and culture in coloniality.

This book will be an invaluable resource for researchers, advanced students, and scholars in the fields of Education, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Political Sciences, Philosophy, Critical Race Theory, Feminist and Gender Studies, Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies, Security Studies, Migration Studies, Media Studies, Indigenous Studies, Cultural Studies, Critical Diversity Studies, and African, Latin American, Asian, American, British and European Studies.
