The Little Book of J.R.R. Tolkien - Wit and Wisdom from the creator of Middle Earth (Hardcover): Orange Hippo! The Little Book of J.R.R. Tolkien - Wit and Wisdom from the creator of Middle Earth (Hardcover)
Orange Hippo!
R150 R120 Discovery Miles 1 200 Save R30 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

A renowned scholar of the English language, Tolkien is today celebrated as the father of the high fantasy genre. Drawing on his knowledge of languages, mythology and legend, he created an entire alternative reality, Middle Earth, and populated it with hobbits, orcs, ents, dragons, magicians and giant spiders. Packed with fascinating facts about Tolkien's life and labours, this delightful volume includes extracts from his works, letters and interviews, as well as from his contemporaries and admirers. It's a celebration of the writer whose imagination and creative genius changed the course of fantasy literature. 'I would rather spend one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of this world alone.' The Fellowship of the Ring (1954) 'I am in fact a Hobbit (in all but size). I like gardens, trees and unmechanized farmlands; I smoke a pipe, and like good plain food (unrefrigerated), but detest French cooking...' Tolkien in a letter to Deborah Webster, 25 October 1958 In July 1915, Tolkien took part in the Somme offensive, the bloodiest battle of the Great War. While recovering in hospital from trench fever, he wrote his first Elvish word list, as well as the first fragments of what would become The Silmarillion. The inspiration for The Hobbit came to Tolkien unexpectedly in the summer of 1930, while he was working his way through a huge stack of student essays. On a blank page he found himself scrawling, 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.'

Babel - Around the World in 20 Languages (Paperback): Gaston Dorren Babel - Around the World in 20 Languages (Paperback)
Gaston Dorren 1
R360 R253 Discovery Miles 2 530 Save R107 (30%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If you were to master the twenty languages discussed in Babel, you could talk with three quarters of the world's population. But what makes these languages stand out amid the world's estimated 6,500 tongues?

Gaston Dorren delves deep into the linguistic oddities and extraordinary stories of these diverse lingua francas, tracing their origins and their sometimes bloody rise to greatness. He deciphers their bewildering array of scripts, presents the gems and gaps in their vocabularies and charts their coinages and loans. He even explains how their grammars order their speakers' worldview.

Combining linguistics and cultural history, Babel takes us on an intriguing tour of the world, addressing such questions as how tiny Portugal spawned a major world language and Holland didn't, why Japanese women talk differently from men, what it means for Russian to be 'related' to English, and how non-alphabetic scripts, such as those of India and China, do the same job as our 26 letters. Not to mention the conundrums of why Vietnamese has four forms for 'I', or how Tamil pronouns keep humans and deities apart.

Babel will change the way you look at the world and how we all speak.

Caesar's Gallic War - A Commentary (Paperback, New): Herbert W. Benario Caesar's Gallic War - A Commentary (Paperback, New)
Herbert W. Benario
R701 Discovery Miles 7 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A classic of western literature, Julius Caesar's Gallic War is also a staple of Latin language instruction at both the high school and college levels. This new edition for students, prepared by a senior classical scholar and translator, is among the most comprehensive available and will be especially valuable because Caesar is one of the two authors chosen for the new Advanced Placement curriculum in high school Latin. The Gallic War is a lively autobiographical account. Caesar writes passionately of his military exploits in Gaul (58-51 b.c.), the region embracing territories we know today as France, Germany, and Britain. Including all 933 AP line selections from Caesar's Latin text, this edition begins with Benario's introduction to the life and career of Julius Caesar, followed by a brief history of Rome and the Gauls from the fourth century b.c. to Caesar's consulship, when he conducted annual campaigns to subdue the Gallic threat once and for all. The volume also features: * A brief analysis of the Gallic War and of Caesar's prose style * Benario's extensive commentary, which leads the student through grammatical complexities, explains Caesar's rhetorical, geographical, and historical references, and illuminates aspects of Roman life ranging from military technology to astronomy * A comprehensive vocabulary * A list of suggested readings Benario's wide-ranging commentary lends this book a value that goes beyond the classroom. Reading Caesar in this edition is not the plodding exercise in translation that generations of high school Latin students once endured. Instead readers see Rome's Gallic frontier as one of its greatest military commanders saw it, reminding us why Caesar's De bello Gallico has endured for more than two thousand years.

Art & Fear - Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking (Hardcover, Main): David Bayles, Ted Orland Art & Fear - Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking (Hardcover, Main)
David Bayles, Ted Orland
R331 R314 Discovery Miles 3 140 Save R17 (5%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Art & Fear is about the way art gets made, the reasons it often doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way. Drawing on the authors' own experiences as two working artists, the book delves into the internal and external challenges to making art in the real world, and shows how they can be overcome every day. First published in 1994, Art & Fear quickly became an underground classic, and word-of-mouth has placed it among the best-selling books on artmaking and creativity. Written by artists for artists, it offers generous and wise insight into what it feels like to sit down at your easel or keyboard, in your studio or performance space, trying to do the work you need to do. Every artist, whether a beginner or a prizewinner, a student or a teacher, faces the same fears - and this book illuminates the way through them.

Rhetoric gives our words the power to inspire. But it's not just for politicians: it's all around us, whether you're buttering up a key client or persuading your children to eat their greens. You have been using rhetoric yourself, all your life. After all, you know what a rhetorical question is, don't you?

In this updated edition of his classic guide, Sam Leith traces the art of argument from ancient Greece down to its many modern mutations. He introduces verbal villains from Hitler to Donald Trump - and the three musketeers: ethos, pathos and logos. He explains how rhetoric works in speeches from Cicero to Richard Nixon, and pays tribute to the rhetorical brilliance of AC/DC's "Back In Black". Before you know it, you'll be confident in chiasmus and proud of your panegyrics - because rhetoric is useful, relevant and absolutely nothing to be afraid of.

The Hero (Paperback): Lee Child The Hero (Paperback)
Lee Child
R148 Discovery Miles 1 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

THE ENDURING MYTH THAT MAKES US HUMAN What makes a hero? Who better to answer that question than Lee Child... 'It's Lee Child. Why would you not read it?' Karin Slaughter 'I don't know another author so skilled at making me turn the page' The Times In his first work of nonfiction, the creator of the multimillion-selling Jack Reacher series explores the endurance of heroes from Achilles to Bond, showing us how this age-old myth is a fundamental part of what makes us human. He demonstrates how hero stories continue to shape our world - arguing that we need them now more than ever. From the Stone Age to the Greek Tragedies, from Shakespeare to Robin Hood, we have always had our heroes. The hero is at the centre of formative myths in every culture and persists to this day in world-conquering books, films and TV shows. But why do these characters continue to inspire us, and why are they so central to storytelling? Scalpel-sharp on the roots of storytelling and enlightening on the history and science of myth, The Hero is essential reading for anyone trying to write or understand fiction. Child teaches us how these stories still shape our minds and behaviour in an increasingly confusing modern world, and with his trademark concision and wit, demonstrates that however civilised we get, we'll always need heroes.

Outlines of Classical Literature - For Students of English (Hardcover): H. Rose Outlines of Classical Literature - For Students of English (Hardcover)
H. Rose
R3,172 Discovery Miles 31 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1959, Outlines of Classical Literature is a guide for students of English literature who too often come to this difficult and complex subject with little or no knowledge of one of its principal sources. It therefore does not attempt to give a complete account of the Greek and Roman writers, but tries instead to deal with those whose influences, direct or indirect, can be clearly traced in medieval and later authors. The ancients are taken in their chronological order, though this is not necessarily the order in which they became known to, or influenced the Christian World; but to follow the latter would be too confusing. The book should be of interest to the undergraduate, the general reader and to the literary critic desirous of displaying classical erudition.

R2,727 Discovery Miles 27 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1925, Primitive Culture in Greece dispassionately reviews the claim that the Greeks were 'heathen' and asks how much of the savage ancestry was left in the classical Greek. In doing so it traces a historical continuity from the barbaric invasions of Greece to its later emergence of a classical culture. It is not written merely for the specialist, and assumes no technical knowledge, but simply an interest in one of the most remarkable civilizations of the world.

The Routledge Global Haiku Reader (Paperback): Grant Caldwell, James Shea The Routledge Global Haiku Reader (Paperback)
Grant Caldwell, James Shea
R1,137 Discovery Miles 11 370 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Routledge Global Haiku Reader provides a historical overview and comprehensive examination of haiku across the world in numerous languages, poetic movements, and cultural contexts. Offering an extensive critical perspective, this volume provides leading essays by poets and scholars who explore haiku's various global developments, demonstrating the form's complex and sometimes contradictory manifestations from the twentieth century to the present. The sixteen chapters are carefully organized into categories that reflect the salient areas of practice and study: Haiku in Transit, Haiku and Social Consciousness, Haiku and Experimentation, The Future of Global Haiku. An insightful introduction surveys haiku's influence beyond Japan and frames the collection historically and culturally, questioning commonly held assumptions about haiku and laying the groundwork for new ways of seeing the form. Haiku's elusiveness, its resistance to definition, is partly what keeps it so relevant today, and this book traces the many ways in which this global verse form has evolved. The Routledge Global Haiku Reader ushers haiku into the twenty-first century in a critically minded and historically informed manner for a new generation of readers and writers and will appeal to students and researchers in literary studies, Asian studies, comparative literature, cultural studies and creative writing.

Defining and Assessing Lexical Proficiency (Hardcover): Agnieszka Lenko-Szymanska Defining and Assessing Lexical Proficiency (Hardcover)
Agnieszka Lenko-Szymanska
R3,907 Discovery Miles 39 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This comprehensive account of performance-based assessment of L2 lexical proficiency analyzes and compares two of the primary methods of evaluation used in the field and unpacks the ways in which they tap into different dimensions of one model of lexical competence and proficiency. This book builds on the latest research on performance-based assessment, which has most recently pointed to the application of more quantitative measures to L2 data, to systematically explore the qualitative method of using human raters in assessment exercises and the quantitative method of using automatic computation of statistical measures of lexis and phraseology. Supported by an up-to-date review of the existing literature, both approaches' unique features are highlighted but also compared to one another to provide a holistic overview of performance-based assessment as it stands today at both the theoretical and empirical level. These findings are exemplified in a concluding chapter, which summarizes results from an empirical study looking at a range of lexical and phraseological features and human raters' scores of over 150 essays written by both L2 learners of English and native speakers. Taken together, the volume challenges existing tendencies within the field which attempt to use one method to validate one another by demonstrating their capacity to indicate very different elements of lexical proficiency, thereby offering a means by which to better conceptualize performance-based assessment of L2 vocabulary in the future. This book will be of interest to students and researchers working in second language acquisition and applied linguistics research, particularly those interested in issues around assessment, vocabulary acquisition, and language proficiency.
