New Tech, New Ties - How Mobile Communication is Reshaping Social Cohesion (Paperback): Richard Ling New Tech, New Ties - How Mobile Communication is Reshaping Social Cohesion (Paperback)
Richard Ling
R964 Discovery Miles 9 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The message of this book is simple: the mobile phone strengthens social bonds among family and friends. With a traditional land-line telephone, we place calls to a location and ask hopefully if someone is "there"; with a mobile phone, we have instant and perpetual access to friends and family regardless of where they are. But when we are engaged in these intimate conversations with absent friends, what happens to our relationship with the people who are actually in the same room with us? In New Tech, New Ties, Rich Ling examines how the mobile telephone affects both kinds of interactions--those mediated by mobile communication and those that are face to face. Ling finds that through the use of various social rituals the mobile telephone strengthens social ties within the circle of friends and family--sometimes at the expense of interaction with those who are physically present--and creates what he calls "bounded solidarity." Ling argues that mobile communication helps to engender and develop social cohesion within the family and the peer group. Drawing on the work of Emile Durkheim, Erving Goffman, and Randall Collins, Ling shows that ritual interaction is a catalyst for the development of social bonding. From this perspective, he examines how mobile communication affects face-to-face ritual situations and how ritual is used in interaction mediated by mobile communication. He looks at the evidence, including interviews and observations from around the world, that documents the effect of mobile communication on social bonding and also examines some of the other possibly problematic issues raised by tighter social cohesion in small groups.Rich Ling is Senior Researcher at the Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor and Adjunct Research Scientist at the University of Michigan. He is the author of The Mobile Connection: The Cell Phone's Impact on Society.

Evolved Cellular Network Planning and Optimization for UMTS and LTE (Hardcover, New): Lingyang Song, Jia Shen Evolved Cellular Network Planning and Optimization for UMTS and LTE (Hardcover, New)
Lingyang Song, Jia Shen
R3,963 Discovery Miles 39 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most books on network planning and optimization provide limited coverage of either GSM or WCDMA techniques. Few scrape the surface of HSPA, and even fewer deal with TD-SCDMA. Filling this void, Evolved Cellular Network Planning and Optimization for UMTS and LTE presents an accessible introduction to all stages of planning and optimizing UMTS, HSPA, and LTE cellular networks. Supplying a comprehensive explanation of the fundamental aspects of current and future cellular networks, the text starts with an overview of each type of network, including basic techniques and channel models. Next, it examines the challenges operators and vendors are likely to face-explaining the critical role network planning and optimization play in addressing these challenges. The book details effective system-level simulation methods, it also provides: A complete overview of UMTS, HSPA, and LTE networks Techniques for planning and optimizing cellular networks An examination of inter-operation issues with existing cellular networks Coverage of the challenges in deploying LTE and relay networks In addition to exploring the procedures for planning and optimizing each type of network, the text covers techniques for major mechanisms, trending, troubleshooting, and conducting radio performance analysis. Paying special attention to compatibility issues among these networks, this book provides the understanding required to deploy and optimize networks that meet the growing demands for mobile data solutions.

Fourth Generation (4G) wireless communication systems support current and emergent multimedia services such as mobile TV, social networks and gaming, high-definition TV, video teleconferencing, and messaging services. These systems feature the All-over-IP concept and boast improved quality of service. Several important R&D activities are currently under way in the field of wireless communications for 4G systems, but the coverage is widespread in the literature. Transmission Techniques for 4G Systems presents a compilation of the latest developments in the field of wireless communications for 4G systems, including evolved Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (eMBMS). Topics include: Transmission schemes suitable for future broadband wireless systems Advances in transmission techniques and receiver design to support emergent wireless needs for 4G requirements Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), base station cooperation, macro-diversity, and inter-cell interference cancellation Multihop relay techniques, hierarchical constellations, and multi-resolution techniques Advances using block transmission techniques for different propagation and multi-user environments System-level evaluation of 4G using different transmission techniques Exploring the key requirements of emergent services, this volume provides fundamentals and theory along with transmission and detection techniques and schemes transversal to many digital communication systems-including wireless, cellular, and satellite. If you're interested in or involved with 4G multimedia systems, this is the book you need on the latest R&D wireless activities so you can plan, design, and develop prototypes and future systems.

There is a buzz going around the interactive media community, and it's all about the iPhone. Agencies are getting demands from their clients to build iPhone applications. End users are downloading millions of applications. Web developers who focus on building Flash applications are in a unique position to make the switch to building iPhone applications. They already have a keen understanding about programming for a visual environment, and they understand how to build applications and minigames for websites.

This book will serve as an introduction to Objective-C for those developers with an understanding of ActionScript. For a Flash developer who never developed for Mac OS X, contemplating this switch can be a daunting idea. When compared side by side, the environment used to build Flash applications and the iPhone SDK are not all that dissimilar, and this book will help Flash developers recognize those similarities and use that knowledge to create engaging iPhone applications for their clients.

This book will help anyone who is building Flash applications to add "iPhone applications" to their arsenal of skills. Learn how to develop for iPhone Transfer your skills from ActionScript to Objective-C Master the iPhone SDK What you'll learn

Readers of this book will learn how to use their existing knowledge about Flash development to more quickly learn how to write applications for the iPhone using the iPhone SDK and all of its tools. Create applications in Objective-C Identify the differences between ActionScript and Objective-C Identify the similarities between the languages and how to leverage ActionScript development knowledge in Objective-C Learn how to get the most out of the iPhone SDK Use iPhone-specific features such as the accelerometer, camera and GPS in your applications Deploy applications on the iPhone Who is this book for?

This book is for experienced Flash developers who are interested in starting to learn how to build applications for the iPhone.
