This book compiles James L. Cox's most important writings on a
phenomenology of Indigenous Religions into one volume, with a new
introduction and conclusion by the author. Cox has consistently
exemplified phenomenological methods by applying them to his own
field studies among Indigenous Religions, principally in Zimbabwe
and Alaska, but also in Australia and New Zealand. Included in this
collection are his articles in which he defines what he means by
the category 'religion' and how this informs his precise meaning of
the classification 'Indigenous Religions'. These theoretical
considerations are always illustrated clearly and concisely by
specific studies of Indigenous Religions and their dynamic
interaction with contemporary political and social circumstances.
This collection demonstrates the continued relevance of the
phenomenological method in the study of religions by presenting the
method as dynamic and adaptable to contemporary social contexts and
as responsive to intellectual critiques of the method.

thought of Giambattista Vico (1668-1774) - especially his New
science - is a post-Revolutionary phenomenon. Stressing the
elements that keep society together by promoting a sense of
belonging, Vico's philosophy helped shape a new Italian identity
and intellectual class. Poet and philosopher Giacomo Leopardi
(1798-1837) responded perceptively to the spreading and
manipulation of Vico's ideas, but to what extent can he be
considered Vico's heir? Through examining the reasons behind the
success of the New science in early nineteenth-century Italy,
Martina Piperno uncovers the cultural trends, debates, and
obsessions fostered by Vico's work. She reconstructs the
penetration of Vico-related discourses in circles and environments
frequented by Leopardi, and establishes and analyses a latent
Vico-Leopardi relationship. Her highly original reading sees
Leopardi reacting to the tensions of his time, receiving Vico's
message indirectly without a need to draw directly from the source.
By exploring the oblique influence of Vico's thought on Leopardi,
Martina Piperno highlights the unique character of Italian
modernity and its tendency to renegotiate tradition and innovation,
past and future.
Jesuit engagement with natural philosophy during the late 16th and
early 17th centuries transformed the status of the mathematical
disciplines and propelled members of the Order into key areas of
controversy in relation to Aristotelianism. Through close
investigation of the activities of the Jesuit 'school' of
mathematics founded by Christoph Clavius, The Scientific
Counter-Revolution examines the Jesuit connections to the rise of
experimental natural philosophy and the emergence of the early
scientific societies. Arguing for a re-evaluation of the role of
Jesuits in shaping early modern science, this book traces the
evolution of the Collegio Romano as a hub of knowledge. Starting
with an examination of Clavius's Counter-Reformation agenda for
mathematics, Michael John Gorman traces the development of a
collective Jesuit approach to experimentation and observation under
Christopher Grienberger and analyses the Jesuit role in the Galileo
Affair and the vacuum debate. Ending with a discussion of the
transformation of the Collegio Romano under Athanasius Kircher into
a place of curiosity and wonder and the centre of a global
information gathering network, this book reveals how the
Counter-Reformation goals of the Jesuits contributed to the shaping
of modern experimental science.
When our smartphones distract us, much more is at stake than a
momentary lapse of attention. Our use of smartphones can interfere
with the building-blocks of meaningfulness and the actions that
shape our self-identity. By analyzing social interactions and
evolving experiences, Roholt reveals the mechanisms of
smartphone-distraction that impact our meaningful projects and
activities. Roholt's conception of meaning in life draws from a
disparate group of philosophers - Susan Wolf, John Dewey, Hubert
Dreyfus, Martin Heidegger, and Albert Borgmann. Central to Roholt's
argument are what Borgmann calls focal practices: dinners with
friends, running, a college seminar, attending sporting events. As
a recurring example, Roholt develops the classification of musical
instruments as focal things, contending that musical performance
can be fruitfully understood as a focal practice. Through this
exploration of what generates meaning in life, Roholt makes us
rethink the place we allow smartphones to occupy in the everyday.
But he remains cautiously optimistic. This thoughtful, needed
interrogation of smartphones shows how we can establish a positive
role for technologies within our lives.
Russian Philosophy in the Twenty-First Century: An Anthology
provides the English-speaking world with access to post-Soviet
philosophic thought in Russia for the first time. The Anthology
presents the fundamental range of contemporary philosophical
problems in the works of prominent Russian thinkers. In contrast to
the "single-mindedness" of Soviet-era philosophers and the bias
toward Orthodox Christianity of emigre philosophers, it offers to
its readers the authors' plurality of different positions in widely
diverse texts. Here one finds strictly academic philosophical works
and those in an applied, pragmatic format-secular and
religious-that are dedicated to complex social and political
matters, to pressing cultural topics or insights into international
terrorism, as well as to contemporary science and global
challenges.
As the foundation of our rationality, logic has traditionally been
considered fixed, stable and constant. This conception of the
discipline has been challenged recently by the plurality of logics
and in this book, Pavel Arazim extends the debate to offer a new
view of logic as dynamic and without a definite, specific shape.
The Problem of Plurality of Logics examines the origins of our
standard view of logic alongside Kant's theories, the holistic
view, the issue of logic's pragmatic significance and Robert
Brandom's logical expressivism. Arazim then draws on
proof-theoretical approaches to present a convincing argument for a
dynamic version of logical inferentialism, which opens space for a
new freedom to modify our own logic. He explores the scope,
possibilities and limits of this freedom in order to highlight the
future paths logic could take, as a motivation for further
research. Marking a departure from logical monism and also from the
recent doctrine of logical pluralism in its various forms, this
book addresses current debates concerning the expressive role of
logic and contributes to a lively area of discussion in analytic
philosophy.
This book recovers Dionysus and Apollo as the twin conceptual
personae of life’s dual rhythm in an attempt to redesign
contemporary theory through the reciprocal affirmation of event and
form, earth and world, dance and philosophy. It revisits Heidegger
and Lévi-Strauss, and combines them with Roy Wagner, with the
purpose of moving beyond Nietzsche’s manifold legacy, including
post-structuralism, new materialism, and speculative realism. It
asks whether merging philosophy and anthropology around issues of
comparative ontologies may give us a chance to re-become earthbound
dwellers on a re-worlded earth.
Following his opposition to the establishment of a theatre in
Geneva, Jean-Jacques Rousseau is often considered an enemy of the
stage. Yet he was fascinated by drama: he was a keen theatre-goer,
his earliest writings were operas and comedies, his admiration for
Italian lyric theatre ran through his career, he wrote one of the
most successful operas of the day, Le Devin du village, and with
his Pygmalion, he invented a new theatrical genre, the Scene
lyrique ('melodrama'). Through multi-faceted analyses of Rousseau's
theatrical and musical works, authors re-evaluate his practical and
theoretical involvement with and influence on the dramatic arts, as
well as his presence in modern theatre histories. New readings of
the Lettre a d'Alembert highlight its political underpinnings,
positioning it as an act of resistance to external bourgeois
domination of Geneva's cultural sphere, and demonstrate the work's
influence on theatrical reform after Rousseau's death. Fresh
analyses of his theory of voice, developed in the Essai sur
l'origine des langues, highlight the unique prestige of Italian
opera for Rousseau. His ambition to rethink the nature and function
of stage works, seen in Le Devin du village and then, more
radically, in Pygmalion, give rise to several different discussions
in the volume, as do his complex relations with Gluck. Together,
contributors shed new light on the writer's relationship to the
stage, and argue for a more nuanced approach to his theatrical and
operatic works, theories and legacy.
