What do pop songs have to say about love? Surprisingly, this book
shows that most popular love songs express much more about
alienation, infatuation, estrangement, jealousy, and heartbreak
than about love.Scheff takes the reader on a tour of popular lyrics
from eighty years of American song to reveal the emotional and
relational meaning of lyrics. He shows that popular love songs
typically steer listeners away from a healthy connection to the
emotions surrounding love. Readers will gain a deeper understanding
of love songs while appreciating the author's suggestions for how
listeners and artists could enrich the art of the love song.
Many new hymns as well as old favorites are included in this
collection of 658 hymns. The hymns represent a variety of music
styles that reflect the diversity of the Mennonite and Brethren
denominations. An additional 202 worship resources offer responsive
readings and prayers for many occasions. Round notes.
40 really easy arrangements of popular classical tunes graded in
order of increasing difficulty. Children (and adults ) will enjoy
learning them as a welcome break from slogging away at all those
exam pieces.

Very Easy Little Peppers is the first book in a five-part series by
Elissa Milne, Australian-based composer, teacher, and writer. Each
book is filled with fun jazz pieces that can be used both as
pedagogical studies and as repertoire pieces. Very Easy Little
Peppers starts at Pre-Grade 1-Grade 1 and progresses to the
standard required for the first exam. The pieces have been written
with the young pianist in mind, avoiding leaps that are difficult
for small hands and incorporating suitably short and lighthearted
pieces, and introduces a range of keys, rhythms and performance
techniques. Technique is developed alongside musicality, helping
young players to move towards grade exams and the other books in
the series.
Featuring all 29 pieces from the album Lang Lang Piano Book, this

sewn binding. It includes exclusive photographs, comments from Lang
Lang on every piece and an edition of Fur Elise annotated with Lang
Lang's own performance notes. This is a book for all pianists to
treasure and revisit again and again.
An Ode by Milton, set for SATB choir and orchestra. Vocal score
with piano accompaniment.
Focusing on the music of the great song composers-Schubert,
Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, and Strauss-Poetry Into Song offers a
systematic introduction to the performance and analysis of Lieder.
Part I, "The Language of Poetry," provides chapters on the themes
and imagery of German Romanticism and the methods of analysis for
German Romantic poetry. Part II, "The Language of the Performer,"
deals with issues of concern to performers: texture, temporality,
articulation, and interpretation of notation and unusual rhythm
accents and stresses. Part III provides clearly defined analytical
procedures for each of four main chapters on harmony and tonality,
melody and motive, rhythm and meter, and form. The concluding
chapter compares different settings of the same text, and the
volume ends with several appendices that offer text translations,
over 40 pages of less accessible song scores, a glossary of
technical terms, and a substantial bibliography. Directing the book
towards students in both voice and theory, and toward all singers,
the authors establish a framework for the analysis of song based on
a process of performing, listening, and analysing, designed to give
the reader a new understanding of the reciprocal interaction
between performance and analysis. Emphasizing the masterworks, the
volume features numerous poetic texts, as well as a core repertory
of songs. Examples throughout the text demonstrate points, while
end-of-chapter questions reinforce concepts and provide
opportunities for directed analysis. While there are a variety of
books on Lieder and on German Romantic poetry, none combines
performance, musical analysis, textual analysis, and the
interrelation between poetry and music in the systematic, thorough
way of Poetry Into Song.

The most familiar entertainment icons and storylines from the 1950s
and 60s remain potent signs that continue to resonate within
contemporary American society and culture. Both the political Left
and Right invoke the events and memories of those decades,
celebrating or condemning the competing social forces embodied in
and unleashed during those years. In recent decades, the
entertainment industry has capitalized on this trend with films
such as Pleasantville (1998), Far from Heaven (2002), The Hours
(2002), Revolutionary Road (2008), and Julie & Julia (2009),
and television shows such as Mad Men and Pan Am, all of which have
looked back on the 1950s and 1960s with a mixture of nostalgia and
criticism. Anxiety Muted: American Film Music in a Suburban Age
explores the role of music in American film and television of the
1950s and 1960s, as well as in films from more recent years that
reflect upon this period. Throughout the collection, authors use
music as a means to interrogate film and television in order to
explore how anxieties about issues of community, social codes,
gender, family and suburbanization - all central concerns of the
Fifties and Sixties - have been treated in motion picture media
relating to those decades. These references function as signs of
the social and political assumptions about the American past that
foil contemporary self-understanding. By studying these musical
materials through the lens of relevant writings of the 1950s, it
demonstrates that specific television shows such as Leave It to
Beaver - often seen as the epitome of Fifties naivety - offers a
more nuanced vision of community and conformity than is usually
recognized, revealing much about our own current social anxieties.
By focusing on a common set of themes relevant to the time period,
Anxiety Muted binds several strands of film studies into a cohesive
and engaging introduction to the Fifties and Sixties, its visual
media and its music. The book will be of interest to students and
scholars of both film music and American music studies.
