This study score has been off-printed from OUP's conductor's score
(available on hire), edited by David Lloyd Jones. Based on
Mussorgsky's [Musorgsky's] original autograph from 1867 rather than
the famous arrangement by Rimsky-Korsakov, it combines the
scholarship of the conductor's edition with the practical benefits
of a study score format. This edition takes account of practical
performing considerations, where necessary, and includes an
introduction by the editor. Orchestral material is available on
hire/rental.
NOW IN PAPERBACK! Designed for use by professional singers,
amateurs, teachers, coaches, and students; contains annotations for
more than 1,000 songs in the basic vocal repertoire. Invaluable for
those who must prepare program notes.
This much-loved book is a collection of over one hundred songs,
some well known, some less known, collected over the years by
experienced Waldorf teacher Brien Masters. They are graded for
different ages from Class 3 (age 8) to Class 8 (age 14) and grouped
into festivals and seasons. They include rounds and four-part
songs, and musical notation for recorders and other instruments.
This is a wonderful resource for Steiner-Waldorf class teachers,
and any teacher or parent looking to introduce music to their
classroom or home.
The interdisciplinary approach of Music and Medieval Manuscripts is
modeled on the work of the scholar to whom the book is dedicated.
Professor Andrew Hughes is recognized internationally for his work
on medieval manuscripts, combining the areas of paleography,
performance, liturgy and music. All these areas of research are
represented in this collection with an emphasis on the continuity
between the physical characteristics of medieval manuscripts and
their different uses. Albert Derolez provides a landmark and
controversial essay on the origins of pre-humanistic script, while
Margaret Bent proposes a new interpretation of a famous passage
from a fifteenth-century poem by Martin Le Franc. Timothy McGee
contributes an innovative essay on late-medieval music, text and
rhetoric. David Hiley discusses musical changes and variation in
the offices of a major saint's feast, and Craig Wright presents an
original study of Guillaume Dufay. Jan Ziolkowski treats the topic
of neumed classics, an under-explored aspect of the history of
medieval pedagogy and the transmission of texts. The essays that
comprise this volume offer a unique focus on medieval manuscripts
from a wide range of perspectives, and will appeal to musicologists
and medievalists alike.

Nominated for a whopping 10 Tony Awards and grossing more than $1 million each week, Wicked is this year's Broadway smash! A prequel to the all-American classic The Wizard of Oz, this new musical is a character study of Elphaba and Glinda, school roommates who grow up to become the Wicked Witch and the Good Witch, respectively. Music is central to any film, creating a tone for the movie that is
just as vital as the visual and narrative components. In recent
years, racial and gender diversity in film has exploded, and the
making of musical scores has changed drastically.
"Hearing Film" offers the first critical examination of music in
the films of the 1980s and 1990s and looks at the burgeoning role
of compiled scores in the shaping of a film . In the first section,
"A Woman Scored," Kassabian analyzes desire and agency in the music
of such films as "Dangerous" "Liaisons, Desert Hearts, Bagdad Cafe,
Dirty Dancing" and "Thelma and Louise." In "At the Twilight's Last
Scoring," she looks at gender, race, sexuality and assimilation in
the music of "The Hunt for Red October, Lethal Weapon 2" and
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." And finally, in "Opening
Scores," she considers how films such as "Dangerous Minds, The
Substitute, Mississippi Masala" and "Corrina, Corrina" bring
together several different entry points of identification through
their scores.
Kassabian ensures that modern film criticism has a new chapter
written through this book. Her important and long-overdue analysis
is not to be ignored. Also includes 11 musical examples.

The classic three volumes of Hebridean Folksongs, reissued
simultaneously for the first time since their original publication
(1969, 1977, 1981), contain 135 songs connected with the waulking
of homespun tweed cloth in the Hebridean isles. Volume 1 is based
on waulking songs collected by Donald MacCormick in South Uist in
1893. Volumes 2 and 3 are based on John Lorne Campbell's recordings
of songs made between 1938 and 1965 in Barra, South Uist, Eriskay
and Benbecula. The translations for all the songs in Volumes 2 and
3 and many of those in Volume 1 are by John Lorne Campbell, who
also wrote detailed notes discussing the songs. Multiple versions
of the same song are compared with each other and with versions
drawn from unpublished manuscript sources. Francis Collinson's
meticulous musical transcriptions of the songs, and musicological
analyses, are invaluable. The songs are from the repertoires of
some well-known singers of their generation, including Miss Annie
Johnson, her brother Calum and Miss Mary Morrison, all of Barra,
Mrs Neil Campbell of South Uist, and Miss Nan MacKinnon of
Vatersay.
