This book aims to give students an introduction to the religious
and social world of ancient Israel. It consists of two parts. The
first explores the major religious offices mentioned in the Old
Testament, including prophets, priests, sages and kings. As well as
considering what these key people said and did, the author traces
the process someone might have gone through to become recognised as
a prophet, priest or sage, and where you would have had to go in
ancient Israel if you wanted to locate someone who held one of
these offices. In the second part the focus is on the religious
beliefs and practices of the "common" people as this was the group
that made up the vast majority of ancient Israel's population.
This book uses the mythological hero Heracles as a lens for
investigating the nature of heroic violence in Archaic and
Classical Greek literature, from Homer through to Aristophanes.
Heracles was famous for his great victories as much as for his
notorious failures. Driving each of these acts is his heroic
violence, an ambivalent force that can offer communal protection as
well as cause grievous harm. Drawing on evidence from epic, lyric
poetry, tragedy, and comedy, this work illuminates the strategies
used to justify and deflate the threatening aspects of violence.
The mixed results of these strategies also demonstrate how the
figure of Heracles inherently - and stubbornly - resists reform.
The diverse character of Heracles' violent acts reveals an enduring
tension in understanding violence: is violence a negative
individual trait, that is to say the manifestation of an internal
state of hostility? Or is it one specific means to a preconceived
end, rather like an instrument whose employment may or may not be
justified? Katherine Lu Hsu explores these evolving attitudes
towards individual violence in the ancient Greek world while also
shedding light on timeless debates about the nature of violence
itself.

In this thesis the author firstly investigates various terms
related to tathagatagarbha in the Srimalasutra. Secondly he focuses
on the languages features of its Sanskrit fragments in the Schoyen
Collection. It turns out that none of their noticeable language
features can ultimately suggest the school-affiliation of the
Srimalasutra. Thirdly he analyzes its paleographical features.
Besides, the author conducts an initial study of textual history
the Srimalasutra, and discusses the older recension(s) of the
Srimalasutra based on the Sanskrit morphology, criteria of lectio
difficilior and lectio facilior, ascertainment of later contents in
the course of transmission, and the development of Buddhist
doctrine. Finally he provides a careful textual collation, and
makes an annotated translation.
Habakkuk is unique amongst the prophetic corpus for its interchange
between YHWH and the prophet. Many open research questions exist
regarding the identities of the antagonists throughout and the
relationships amongst the different sections of the book. In A
Discourse Analysis of Habakkuk, David J. Fuller develops a model
for discourse analysis of Biblical Hebrew within the framework of
Systemic Functional Linguistics. The analytical procedure is
carried out on each pericope of the book separately, and then the
respective results are compared in order to determine how the
successive speeches function as responses to each other, and to
better understand changes in the perspectives of the various
speakers throughout.
Buddhist Statecraft in East Asia explores the long relationship
between Buddhism and the state in premodern times and seeks to
counter the modern, secularist notion that Buddhism, as a religion,
is inherently apolitical. By revealing the methods by which members
of Buddhist communities across premodern East Asia related to
imperial rule, this volume offers case studies of how Buddhists,
their texts, material culture, ideas, and institutions legitimated
rulers and defended regimes across the region. The volume also
reveals a history of Buddhist writing, protest, and rebellion
against the state. Contributors are Stephanie Balkwill, James A.
