Konstantinos Terzopoulos, Chrysanthos Moschopoulos
R1,110 Discovery Miles 11 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This revised publication of the Venice 1891 Leitourgikon collects the hymns chanted in the Divine Liturgy from the ecclesiastical library of the Book of Hours, Menaeon, Triodion, Pentecostarion and Parakletike for the Sundays, Great Feasts and Formal Saint commemorations of the Church calendar. Specifically, it contains the Psalms from the Service of the Typika, the troparia of the Beatitudes, and Kanon troparia from the 3rd and 6th Odes, the antiphons and other troparia (apolytikia, kontakia, hypakoae, megalynaria and communion hymns) necessary to those chanting the Liturgy. It is with great spiritual pleasure that this most practical edition is presented, with the humble dedication to the pious clergy and chanters in the Church. Like in the 1891 edition, it was deemed advantageous to add a few more practical texts. In the area containing hymns from the new service booklets hymns for the commemoration of the Father of Mount Athos, the Feast of the Holy Protection and the memories of St Nektarios the Wonderworker and St Kosmas Aetolos were added. Also included are the texts of the daily antiphons, the troparia of the weekday beatitudes from the Parakletike, the May my mouth be filled with thy praise and Psalms 33 and 144.

A Layman in the Desert - Monastic Wisdom for Life in the World (Paperback): Daniel Opperwall A Layman in the Desert - Monastic Wisdom for Life in the World (Paperback)
Daniel Opperwall
R653 R612 Discovery Miles 6 120 Save R41 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Orthodox Christians today have no lack of resources on monastic spirituality. And yet startlingly little has been done to critically engage the monastic tradition and adapt its ancient wisdom for the Orthodox faithful living in today's complex society. A Layman in the Desert aims to bridge this crucial gap. Working with the Conferences of St John Cassian, Opperwall constructs a kind of relationship handbook that shows us how the desert saints of old can help us build healthy, Christ-centered relationships with our spouses, children, friends, and coworkers.

R356 Discovery Miles 3 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

St. Porphyry, one of the best known elders in modern Greece, having direct experience of God and a whole life devoted to the guidance of his spiritual children, left precious speeches. The present edition offers important excerpts along with notes that explain Porphyry's thinking. Porphyry emphasizes the secrecy that fits the divine love, the sensitivity and confidence, the awareness, devoutness, freedom and mildness of faith, when life becomes a prayer, realizing the identity of Christ, that "He is our friend, our brother, He is everything good and nice. He is Everything, but He is a friend and he shouts... 'we are brothers... I'm not holding hell in my hand, I'm not threatening you, I love you, I want you to enjoy life together with me."

Matthew Lee Miller
R2,047 Discovery Miles 20 470 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In The American YMCA and Russian Culture, Matthew Lee Miller explores the impact of the philanthropic activities of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) on Russians during the late imperial and early Soviet periods. The YMCA, the largest American service organization, initiated its intense engagement with Russians in 1900. During the First World War, the Association organized assistance for prisoners of war, and after the emigration of many Russians to central and western Europe, founded the YMCA Press and supported the St. Sergius Theological Academy in Paris. Miller demonstrates that the YMCA contributed to the preservation, expansion, and enrichment of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. It therefore played a major role in preserving an important part of pre-revolutionary Russian culture in Western Europe during the Soviet period until the repatriation of this culture following the collapse of the USSR. The research is based on the YMCA's archival records, Moscow and Paris archives, and memoirs of both Russian and American participants. This is the first comprehensive discussion of an extraordinary period of interaction between American and Russian cultures. It also presents a rare example of fruitful interconfessional cooperation by Protestant and Orthodox Christians.

A Philosophy of the Unsayable (Paperback): William P Franke A Philosophy of the Unsayable (Paperback)
William P Franke
R1,107 Discovery Miles 11 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In A Philosophy of the Unsayable, William Franke argues that the encounter with what exceeds speech has become the crucial philosophical issue of our time. He proposes an original philosophy pivoting on analysis of the limits of language. The book also offers readings of literary texts as poetically performing the philosophical principles it expounds. Franke engages with philosophical theologies and philosophies of religion in the debate over negative theology and shows how apophaticism infiltrates the thinking even of those who attempt to deny or delimit it. In six cohesive essays, Franke explores fundamental aspects of unsayability. In the first and third essays, his philosophical argument is carried through with acute attention to modes of unsayability that are revealed best by literary works, particularly by negativities of poetic language in the oeuvres of Paul Celan and Edmond Jabes. Franke engages in critical discussion of apophatic currents of philosophy both ancient and modern, focusing on Hegel and French post-Hegelianism in his second essay and on Neoplatonism in his fourth essay. He treats Neoplatonic apophatics especially as found in Damascius and as illuminated by postmodern thought, particularly Jean-Luc Nancy's deconstruction of Christianity. In the last two essays, Franke treats the tension between two contemporary approaches to philosophy of religion-Radical Orthodoxy and radically secular or Death-of-God theologies. A Philosophy of the Unsayable will interest scholars and students of philosophy, literature, religion, and the humanities. This book develops Franke's explicit theory of unsayability, which is informed by his long-standing engagement with major representatives of apophatic thought in the Western tradition.

Russian political history and Russian church history are tied together very tightly. One cannot properly understand the overall history of Russia without considering the role of the Orthodox Church in Russia. Cross and Kremlin uniquely surveys both the history and the contemporary situation of the Russian Orthodox Church. The first chapter gives a concise chronology from the tenth century through the present day. The following chapters highlight several important issues and aspects of Russian Orthodoxy -- church-state relations, theology, ecclesiastical structure, monasticism, spirituality, the relation of Russian Orthodoxy to the West, dissidence as a frequent phenomenon in Russian church history, and more.

Religion and Enlightenment in Catherinian Russia - The Teachings of Metropolitan Platon (Paperback, Nip ed.): Elise Kimerling... Religion and Enlightenment in Catherinian Russia - The Teachings of Metropolitan Platon (Paperback, Nip ed.)
Elise Kimerling Wirtschafter
R909 Discovery Miles 9 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This valuable study explores the Russian Enlightenment with reference to the religious Enlightenment of the mid to late eighteenth century. Grounded in close reading of the sermons and devotional writings of Platon (Levshin), Court preacher and Metropolitan of Moscow, the book examines the blending of European ideas into the teachings of Russian Orthodoxy. Highlighting the interplay between Enlightenment thought and Orthodox enlightenment, Elise Wirtschafter addresses key questions of concern to religious Enlighteners across Europe: humanity's relationship to God and creation, the distinction between learning and enlightenment, the role of Christian love in authority relationships, the meaning of free will in a universe governed by Divine Providence, and the unity of church, monarchy, and civil society. Countering scholarship that depicts an Orthodox religious culture under assault from European modernity and Petrine absolutism, Wirtschafter emphasizes the ability of Russia's educated churchmen to assimilate and transform Enlightenment ideas. The intellectual and spiritual vitality of eighteenth-century Orthodoxy helps to explain how Russian policymakers and intellectuals met the challenge of European power while simultaneously coming to terms with the broad cultural appeal of the Enlightenment's universalistic human rights agenda. Religion and Enlightenment in Catherinian Russia defines the Russian Enlightenment as a response to the allure of European modernity, as an instrument of social control, and as the moral voice of an emergent independent society. Because Russia's enlightened intellectuals focused on the moral perfectibility of the individual human being, rather than social and political change, the originality of the Russian Enlightenment has gone unrecognized. This study corrects images of a superficial Enlightenment and crisis-ridden religious culture, arguing that in order to understand the humanistic sensibility and emphasis on individual dignity that permeate Russian intellectual history, and the history of the educated classes more broadly, it is necessary to bring Orthodox teachings into the discussion of Enlightenment thought. The result is a book that explains the distinctive origins of modern Russian culture while also allowing scholars to situate the Russian Enlightenment in European and global history.

An Eastern Orthodox Bishop

The book is in Russian and includes a full English translation. It is authored by an Eastern Orthodox Bishop for LGBT individuals in Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and Russia. The book will resonate with Eastern European LGBT persons who are "out and proud," out to a select few, and those who live quiet lives of isolation and hopelessness. The Bishop answers a series of questions about social, political, religious, and spiritual issues that directly impact LGBT persons in Eastern Europe. His answers provide love, comfort, and support to those enduring homophobia. The questions presented reflect those that many LGBT individuals struggle with in Eastern Europe. They are answered in plain, simple language often referencing Orthodox thinkers, theologians, and philosophers from Eastern Europe. Table of Contents 1. For whom is this book written? 2. The Eastern Church in the Spiritual Marketplace - American Conversions to Orthodox Christianity (Paperback, New): Amy Slagle The Eastern Church in the Spiritual Marketplace - American Conversions to Orthodox Christianity (Paperback, New)
Amy Slagle
R1,027 Discovery Miles 10 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Like many Americans, the Eastern Orthodox converts in this study are participants in what scholars today refer to as the "spiritual marketplace" or quest culture of expanding religious diversity and individual choice-making that marks the post-World War II American religious landscape. In this highly readable ethnographic study, Slagle explores the ways in which converts, clerics, and lifelong church members use marketplace metaphors in describing and enacting their religious lives. Slagle conducted participant observation and formal semi-structured interviews in Orthodox churches in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Jackson, Mississippi. Known among Orthodox Christians as the "Holy Land" of North American Orthodoxy, Pittsburgh offers an important context for exploring the interplay of Orthodox Christianity with the mainstreams of American religious life. Slagle's second round of research in Jackson sheds light on the American Bible Belt where over the past thirty years the Orthodox Church in America has marshaled significant resources to build mission parishes. Relatively few ethnographic studies have examined Eastern Orthodox Christianity in the United States, and Slagle's book fills a significant gap. This lucidly written book is an ideal selection for courses in the sociology and anthropology of religion, contemporary Christianity, and religious change. Scholars of Orthodox Christianity, as well as clerical and lay people interested in Eastern Orthodoxy, will find this book to be of great appeal.

Old Believers in a Changing World (Hardcover): Robert Crummey Old Believers in a Changing World (Hardcover)
Robert Crummey
R1,149 Discovery Miles 11 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This important collection of essays by a pioneer in the field focuses on the history and culture of a conservative religious tradition whose adherents have fought to preserve their beliefs and practices from the 17th century through today. Old Belief had its origins in a protest against liturgical reforms in the Russian Orthodox Church in the mid-1600s and quickly grew into a complex torrent of opposition to the Russian state, the official church, and the social hierarchy. For Old Believers, periods of full religious freedom have been very brief--from 1905 to 1917 and since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Crummey examines the ways in which Old Believers defend their core beliefs and practices and adjust their polemical strategies and way of life in response to the changing world. Opening chapters survey the historiography of Old Belief, examine the methodological problems in studying the movement as a Russian example of "popular religion," and outline the first decades of the history. Particular themes of Old Believer history are the focus of the rest of the book, beginning with two sets of case studies of spirituality, culture, and intellectual life. Subsequent chapters analyze the diverse structures of Old Believer communities and their fate in times of persecution. A final essay examines publications of contemporary scholars in Novosibirsk whose work provides glimpses of the life of traditional believers in the Soviet period.

"Old Believers in a Changing World" will appeal to scholars and students of Russian history, to those interested in Eastern Orthodoxy, and to those with an interest in the comparative history of religious movements.

On the Two Ways (Hardcover): Stewart Alistai On the Two Ways (Hardcover)
Stewart Alistai
R387 Discovery Miles 3 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Popular Patristics Series Volume 41 In the early years of the common era, as Judaism and Christianity each emerged, their adherents saw that life presents us with a choice of following one of two ways, either of goodness or of evil, characterized variously as ways of life or death, of light or darkness, of truth or deceit. This conviction is presented to us in a number of different versions and literary contexts. This book contains the various presentations of these two ways from across the centuries. It was a choice faced by those being baptized as by those seeking a deeper knowledge of Christ and one which continues to confront us all even today. Each version of the two ways is presented together with introductions, which allow the reader to see the presentation of the motif in its historical and literary context.

Melody of Faith - Theology in an Orthodox Key (Paperback): Vigen Guroian Melody of Faith - Theology in an Orthodox Key (Paperback)
Vigen Guroian
R665 R589 Discovery Miles 5 890 Save R76 (11%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the Orthodox Christian faith the elements of liturgy, scripture, hymnody, and iconography are the instruments or -voices- of a melody of faith. Here Vigen Guroian presents the fundamental beliefs of Orthodox Christianity through the metaphor of music. Often drawing on his personal religious experience, Guroian weaves together the themes of creation and new creation, beginning and end, sin and holiness, Incarnation and deification, sacrifice and salvation. Guroian explores the dogmatic foundation of this rich faith in six chapters, or -movements.- Through discussing Syrian, Armenian, Byzantine, and Russian iconography and Gospel illuminations -- illustrated by icons and Armenian miniatures -- he further reveals how Orthodox Christianity expresses theology as much in art as through language. As a whole, Guroian's Melody of Faithbeautifully captures the spirit of Orthodox Christianity and takes readers to the theological heart of the Orthodox faith.
