Group Theory for High Energy Physicists (Hardcover): Mohammad Saleem, Muhammad Rafique Group Theory for High Energy Physicists (Hardcover)
Mohammad Saleem, Muhammad Rafique
R5,486 Discovery Miles 54 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although group theory has played a significant role in the development of various disciplines of physics, there are few recent books that start from the beginning and then build on to consider applications of group theory from the point of view of high energy physicists. Group Theory for High Energy Physicists fills that role. It presents groups, especially Lie groups, and their characteristics in a way that is easily comprehensible to physicists. The book first introduces the concept of a group and the characteristics that are imperative for developing group theory as applied to high energy physics. It then describes group representations since matrix representations of a group are often more convenient to deal with than the abstract group itself. With a focus on continuous groups, the text analyzes the root structure of important groups and obtains the weights of various representations of these groups. It also explains how symmetry principles associated with group theoretical techniques can be used to interpret experimental results and make predictions. This concise, gentle introduction is accessible to undergraduate and graduate students in physics and mathematics as well as researchers in high energy physics. It shows how to apply group theory to solve high energy physics problems.

Crystal Channeling and Its Application at High-Energy Accelerators (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1997):... Crystal Channeling and Its Application at High-Energy Accelerators (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1997)
Valery M. Biryukov; Translated by V. M. Biryukov; Yuri A. Chesnokov, Vladilen I. Kotov
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Nature performs not hing vainly, and makes nothing unnecessary" Aristotle Interest in the passage of charged particles through crystals first appeared at the beginning of this century following experiments on x-ray diffraction in crystallattices, which provided the proof of an ordered distribution of atoms in a crystal. Stark [1] put forward the hypothesis that certain directions in a crystal should be relatively transparent to charged particles. These first ideas on the channeling of charged particles in crystals were forgotten but became topical again in the early 1960s when the channeling effect was rediscovered by computer simulation [2] and in experiments [3] that revealed anomalously long ion ranges in crystals. The orientational ef fects during the passage of charged particles through crystals have been found for a whole range of processes characterized by small impact parameters for collisions between particles and atoms: nuclear reactions, large-angle scatter ing, energy losses. Lindhard explained the channeling of charged particles in crystals [4]. The results of the numerous investigations into the channeling of low-energy (amounting to several MeV) charged particles in crystals have been summarized in several monographs and reviews [5~8l.

Asymptotic Methods in Electromagnetics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997): Daniel Bouche, Frederic... Asymptotic Methods in Electromagnetics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997)
Daniel Bouche, Frederic Molinet, Raj Mittra
R3,173 Discovery Miles 31 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Numerically rigorous techniques for the computation of electromagnetic fields diffracted by an object become computationally intensive, if not impractical to handle, at high frequencies and one must resort to asymptotic methods to solve the scattering problem at short wavelengths. The asymptotic methods provide closed form expansions for the diffracted fields and are also useful for eliciting physical interpretations of the various diffraction phenomena. One of the principal objectives of this book is to discuss the different asymptotic methods in a unified manner. Although the book contains explicit formulas for computing the field diffracted by conducting or dielectric-coated objects, it also provides the mathematical foundations of the different methods and explains how they are interrelated.

Introductory Muon Science (Paperback, Library): Kanetada Nagamine Introductory Muon Science (Paperback, Library)
Kanetada Nagamine
R1,431 Discovery Miles 14 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Muons are unstable elementary particles that are found in space, which can also be produced in particle accelerators to an intensity a billion times greater than that occurring naturally. This book describes the various applications of muons across the spectrum of the sciences and engineering. Scientific research using muons relies both on their basic properties as well as the microscopic interaction between them and surrounding particles such as nuclei, electrons, atoms and molecules. Examples of research that can be carried out using muons include muon catalysis for nuclear fusion, the application of muon spin probes to study microscopic magnetic properties of advanced materials, electron labelling to help in the understanding of electron transfer in proteins, and non-destructive element analysis of the human body. Cosmic ray muons can also be used to study the inner structure of volcanoes.

The Physics of Synchrotron Radiation (Paperback): Albert Hofmann The Physics of Synchrotron Radiation (Paperback)
Albert Hofmann
R1,743 Discovery Miles 17 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explains the underlying physics of synchrotron radiation and derives its main properties. It is divided into four parts. The first covers the general case of the electromagnetic fields created by an accelerated relativistic charge. The second part concentrates on the radiation emitted by a charge moving on a circular trajectory. The third looks at undulator radiation, covering plane weak undulators, strong undulators and other more general undulators. The final part deals with applications and investigates the optics of synchrotron radiation dominated by diffraction due to the small opening angle. It also includes a description of electron storage rings as radiation sources and the effect of the emitted radiation on the electron beam. This book provides a valuable reference for scientists and engineers in the field of accelerators, and all users of synchrotron radiation.

Quantum Cosmology - The Supersymmetric Perspective - Vol. 2 - Advanced Topic (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Paulo Vargas Moniz Quantum Cosmology - The Supersymmetric Perspective - Vol. 2 - Advanced Topic (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Paulo Vargas Moniz
R1,496 Discovery Miles 14 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

We read in order to know we are not alone, I once heard, and perhaps it could also be suggested that we write in order not to be alone, to endorse, to promote continuity. The idea for this book took about 10 years to materialize, and it is the author's hope that its content will constitute the beginning of further explorations beyond current horizons. More speci cally, this book appeals to the reader to engage upon and persevere with a journey, moving through the less well explored territories in the evolution of the very early universe, and pushing towards new landscapes. P- haps, during or after consulting this book, this attitude and this willingness will be embraced by someone, somewhere, and this person will go on to enrich our quantum cosmological description of the early universe, by means of a clearer supersymm- ric perspective. It is to these creative and inquisitive 'young minds' that the book is addressed. The reader will not therefore nd in this book all the answers to all the problems regarding a supersymmetric and quantum description of the early universe, and this remark is substantiated in the book by a list of unresolved and challenging problems, itself incomplete.

Physics of Neutron Star Interiors (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001): D. Blaschke, N.K. Glendenning,... Physics of Neutron Star Interiors (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001)
D. Blaschke, N.K. Glendenning, A. Sedrakian
R2,716 Discovery Miles 27 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Neutron stars are the densest observable bodies in our universe. Born during the gravitational collapse of luminous stars - a birth heralded by spectacular supernova explosions - they open a window on a world where the state of the matter and the strengths of the fields are anything but ordinary. This book is a collection of pedagogical lectures on the theory of neutron stars, and especially their interiors, at the forefront of current research. It addresses graduate students and researchers alike, and should be particularly suitable as a text bridging the gap between standard textbook material and the research literature.

Extended Density Functionals in Nuclear Structure Physics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004): G.A.... Extended Density Functionals in Nuclear Structure Physics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004)
G.A. Lalazissis, Peter Ring, D. Vretenar
R1,434 Discovery Miles 14 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The experimental and theoretical investigation of nuclei far from the valley of beta-stability is the main subject of modern nuclear structure research. Although the most successful nuclear structure models are purely phenomenological, they nevertheless exploit basic properties of QCD at low energies. This book focuses on the current efforts to bridge the gap between phenomenology and the principles derived from QCD using the extended density functional approach which is based on the successful DFT methods to tackle similarly complex interacting systems in molecular and condensed matter physics. Conceived as a series of pedagogical lectures, this volume addresses researchers in the field as well as postgraduate students and non-specialized scientists from related areas who seek a high-level but accessible introduction to the subject.

R4,775 Discovery Miles 47 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This useful text provides a survey of the current state of research into the physics of neutrinos. It gives a global view of the areas of physics in which neutrinos play important roles, including astrophysics and cosmology.

The Theory of Complex Angular Momenta - Gribov Lectures on Theoretical Physics (Paperback): V.N. Gribov The Theory of Complex Angular Momenta - Gribov Lectures on Theoretical Physics (Paperback)
V.N. Gribov
R1,900 Discovery Miles 19 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This 2003 book provides a rigorous introduction to the theory of complex angular momenta, based on the methods of field theory. It comprises an English translation of the series of lectures given by V. N. Gribov in 1969, when the physics of high-energy hadron interactions was being created. Besides their historical significance, these lectures contain material which is highly relevant to research today. The basic physical results and the approaches Gribov developed are now being rediscovered in an alternative context: in the microscopic theory of hadrons provided by quantum chromodynamics. The ideas and calculation techniques presented in this book are useful for analysing high-energy hadron scattering phenomena, deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering, the physics of heavy ion collisions, kinetic phenomena in phase transitions, and will be instrumental in the analysis of electroweak processes at the next-generation particle accelerators, such as LHC and TESLA.

Accretion Disks, Jets and High-Energy Phenomena in Astrophysics - Les Houches Session LXXVIII, July 29 - August 23, 2002 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2003)
Vassily Beskin, Gilles Henri, Francois Menard, Guy Pelletier, Jean Dalibard
R5,671 Discovery Miles 56 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The accretion process is thought to play a key role in the Universe. This book explains, in a form intelligible to graduate students, its relation to the formation of new stars, to the energy release in compact objects and to the formation of black holes. The monograph describes how accretion processes are related to the presence of jets in stellar objects and active galactic nuclei and to jet formation. The authors treat theoretical work as well as current observational facts. This volume of the highly esteemed Les Houches series is meant as an advanced text that can serve to attract students to exciting new research work in astrophysics.

From Nucleons to Nucleus - Concepts of Microscopic Nuclear Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007):... From Nucleons to Nucleus - Concepts of Microscopic Nuclear Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007)
Jouni Suhonen
R2,528 Discovery Miles 25 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

From Nucleons to Nucleus deals with single-particle and collective features of spherical nuclei. Each nuclear model is introduced and derived in detail. The formalism is then applied to light and medium-heavy nuclei in worked-out examples, and finally the acquired skills are strengthened by a wide selection of exercises, many relating the models to experimental data. Nuclear properties are discussed using particles, holes and quasi-particles. From Nucleons to Nucleus is based on lectures on nuclear physics given by the author, and serves well as a textbook for advanced students. Researchers too will appreciate it as a well-balanced reference to theoretical nuclear physics.

Ion Implantation and Synthesis of Materials (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006): Michael Nastasi, James W.... Ion Implantation and Synthesis of Materials (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Michael Nastasi, James W. Mayer
R2,649 Discovery Miles 26 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Ion implantation is one of the key processing steps in silicon integrated circuit technology. Some integrated circuits require up to 17 implantation steps and circuits are seldom processed with less than 10 implantation steps. Controlled doping at controlled depths is an essential feature of implantation. Ion beam processing can also be used to improve corrosion resistance, to harden surfaces, to reduce wear and, in general, to improve materials properties. This book presents the physics and materials science of ion implantation and ion beam modification of materials. It covers ion-solid interactions used to predict ion ranges, ion straggling and lattice disorder. Also treated are shallow-junction formation and slicing silicon with hydrogen ion beams. Topics important for materials modification, such as ion-beam mixing, stresses, and sputtering, are also described.

Electromagnetic Radiation: Variational Methods, Waveguides and Accelerators - Including Seminal Papers of Julian Schwinger... Electromagnetic Radiation: Variational Methods, Waveguides and Accelerators - Including Seminal Papers of Julian Schwinger (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Kimball A. Milton, Julian Schwinger
R4,096 Discovery Miles 40 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Julian Schwinger was already the world's leading nuclear theorist when he joined the Radiation Laboratory at MIT in 1943, at the ripe age of 25. Just 2 years earlier he had joined the faculty at Purdue, after a postdoc with OppenheimerinBerkeley, andgraduatestudyatColumbia. Anearlysemester at Wisconsin had con?rmed his penchant to work at night, so as not to have to interact with Breit and Wigner there. He was to perfect his iconoclastic 1 habits in his more than 2 years at the Rad Lab. Despite its deliberately misleading name, the Rad Lab was not involved in nuclear physics, which was imagined then by the educated public as a esoteric science without possible military application. Rather, the subject at hand was the perfection of radar, the beaming and re?ection of microwaves which had already saved Britain from the German onslaught. Here was a technology which won the war, rather than one that prematurely ended it, at a still incalculable cost. It was partly for that reason that Schwinger joined this e?ort, rather than what might have appeared to be the more natural project for his awesome talents, the development of nuclear weapons at Los Alamos. He had got a bit of a taste of that at the "Metallurgical Laboratory" in Chicago, and did not much like it. Perhaps more important for his decision to go to and stay at MIT during the war was its less regimented and isolated environment.

Electrostatic Accelerators - Fundamentals and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005): K. Siegbahn Electrostatic Accelerators - Fundamentals and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005)
K. Siegbahn; Edited by Ragnar Hellborg
R5,914 Discovery Miles 59 140 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Electrostatic accelerators are an important and widespread subgroup within the broad spectrum of modern, large particle acceleration devices. They are specifically designed for applications that require high-quality ion beams in terms of energy stability and emittance at comparatively low energies (a few MeV). Their ability to accelerate virtually any kind of ion over a continuously tunable range of energies makes them a highly versatile tool for investigations in many research fields including, but not limited to, atomic and nuclear spectroscopy, heavy ion reactions, accelerator mass spectroscopy as well as ion-beam analysis and modification. The book is divided into three parts. The first part concisely introduces the field of accelerator technology and techniques that emphasize their major modern applications. The second part treats the electrostatic accelerator per se: its construction and operational principles as well as its maintenance. The third part covers all relevant applications in which electrostatic accelerators are the preferred tool for accelerator-based investigations. Since some topics are common to all types of accelerators, Electrostatic Accelerators will also be of value for those more familiar with other types of accelerators.

Pixel Detectors - From Fundamentals to Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006): Leonardo Rossi,... Pixel Detectors - From Fundamentals to Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Leonardo Rossi, Peter Fischer, Tilman Rohe, Norbert Wermes
R2,659 Discovery Miles 26 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Pixel detectors are a particularly important class of particle and radiation detection devices. They have an extremely broad spectrum of applications, ranging from high-energy physics to the photo cameras of everyday life. This book is a general purpose introduction into the fundamental principles of pixel detector technology and semiconductor-based hybrid pixel devices. Although these devices were developed for high-energy ionizing particles and radiation beyond visible light, they are finding new applications in many other areas. This book will therefore benefit all scientists and engineers working in any laboratory involved in developing or using particle detection.

Interaction of Radiation with Matter (Hardcover): Hooshang Nikjoo, Shuzo Uehara, Dimitris Emfietzoglou Interaction of Radiation with Matter (Hardcover)
Hooshang Nikjoo, Shuzo Uehara, Dimitris Emfietzoglou
R4,925 Discovery Miles 49 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Interaction of Radiation with Matter focuses on the physics of the interactions of ionizing radiation in living matter and the Monte Carlo simulation of radiation tracks. Clearly progressing from an elementary level to the state of the art, the text explores the classical physics of track description as well as modern aspects based on condensed matter physics. The first section of the book discusses the fundamentals of the radiation field. In the second section, the authors describe the cross sections for electrons and heavy ions-the most important information needed for simulating radiation track at the molecular level. The third section details the inelastic scattering and energy loss of charged particles in condensed media, particularly liquid water. The final section contains a large number of questions and problems to reinforce learning. Designed for radiation interaction courses, this textbook is the ideal platform for teaching students in medical/health physics and nuclear engineering. It gives students a solid grounding in the physical understanding of radiation track structure in living matter, enabling them to pursue further work in radiological physics and radiation dosimetry.

H. Wiedemann
R2,705 Discovery Miles 27 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Particle Accelerator Physics II continues the discussion of particle accelerator physics beyond the introductory Particle Accelerator Physics I. Aimed at students and scientists who plan to work or are working in the field of accelerator physics. Basic principles of beam dynamics already discussed in Vol.I are expanded into the nonlinear regime in order to tackle fundamental problems encountered in present-day accelerator design and development. Nonlinear dynamics is discussed both for the transverse phase space to determine chromatic and geometric aberrations which limit the dynamic aperture as well as for the longitude phase space in connection with phase focusing at very small values of the momentum compaction. Effects derived theoretically are compared with observations made at existing accelerators.
