Density Ratio Estimation in Machine Learning (Hardcover, New): Masashi Sugiyama, Taiji Suzuki, Takafumi Kanamori Density Ratio Estimation in Machine Learning (Hardcover, New)
Masashi Sugiyama, Taiji Suzuki, Takafumi Kanamori
R4,285 R3,609 Discovery Miles 36 090 Save R676 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Machine learning is an interdisciplinary field of science and engineering that studies mathematical theories and practical applications of systems that learn. This book introduces theories, methods and applications of density ratio estimation, which is a newly emerging paradigm in the machine learning community. Various machine learning problems such as non-stationarity adaptation, outlier detection, dimensionality reduction, independent component analysis, clustering, classification and conditional density estimation can be systematically solved via the estimation of probability density ratios. The authors offer a comprehensive introduction of various density ratio estimators including methods via density estimation, moment matching, probabilistic classification, density fitting and density ratio fitting, as well as describing how these can be applied to machine learning. The book provides mathematical theories for density ratio estimation including parametric and non-parametric convergence analysis and numerical stability analysis to complete the first and definitive treatment of the entire framework of density ratio estimation in machine learning.

A Few Steps Towards 3D Active Vision (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997): Thierry Vieville A Few Steps Towards 3D Active Vision (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997)
Thierry Vieville
R1,398 Discovery Miles 13 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

T. Vieville: A Few Steps Towards 3D Active Vision appears as Vol. 33 in the "Springer Series in Information Sciences." A specific problem in the field of active vision is analyzed, namely how suitable is it to explicitly use 3D visual cues in a reactive visual task? The author has collected a set of studies on this subject and has used these experimental and theoretical developments to propose a synthetic view on the problem, completed by some specific experiments. With this book scientists and graduate students will have a complete set of methods, algorithms, and experiments to introduce 3D visual cues in active visual perception mechanisms, e.g. autocalibration of visual sensors on robotic heads and mobile robots. Analogies with biological visual systems provide an easy introduction to this subject."

Marcin Grzegorzek, Christian Theobalt, Reinhard Koch, Andreas Kolb
R2,804 Discovery Miles 28 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cameras for 3D depth imaging, using either time-of-flight (ToF) or structured light sensors, have received a lot of attention recently and have been improved considerably over the last few years. The present techniques make full-range 3D data available at video frame rates, and thus pave the way for a much broader application of 3D vision systems.

A series of workshops have closely followed the developments within ToF imaging over the years. Today, depth imaging workshops can be found at every major computer vision conference. The papers presented in this volume stem from a seminar on Time-of-Flight Imaging held at Schloss Dagstuhl in October 2012. They cover all aspects of ToF depth imaging, from sensors and basic foundations, to algorithms for low level processing, to important applications that exploit depth imaging. In addition, this book contains the proceedings of a workshop on Imaging New Modalities, which was held at the German Conference on Pattern Recognition in Saarbrucken, Germany, in September 2013. A state-of-the-art report on the Kinect sensor and its applications is followed by two reports on local and global ToF motion compensation and a novel depth capture system using a plenoptic multi-lens multi-focus camera sensor."

R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The world of the twenty-?rst century is, more than ever, global and impersonal. Criminal and terrorist threats, both physical and on the Internet, increase by the day. The demand for better methods of identi?cation is growing, not only in companies and organizations, but also in the world at large. Identity management is put under pressure, due to the growing number of frauds who want to hide their true identity. Identity management challenges the information security research community to focus on interdisciplinary and holistic approaches while retaining the bene?ts of previous research e?orts. As part of this tendency, surveillance and monitoring are more prominently present in society, both in the public and private domain. The original intention being to contribute to security and safety, surveillance and monitoring might, in some cases, have unintended or even contradictory e?ects. Besides, the - nipresence of surveillance and monitoring systems might be at daggers drawn with public and democratic liberties. In this context, IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) Working Group 11.6 on Identity Management organized its second working c- ferenceonPoliciesandResearchinIdentityManagement(IDMAN2010)inOslo, Norway, November 18-19, 2010. Papers o?ering research contributions focusing on identity management in general and surveillance and monitoring in parti- lar were solicited for submission. The submitted papers were in general of high quality. All papers were reviewed by two to ?ve members of the international ProgramCommittee. Nine of the submitted papers, whicharepublishedin these proceedings, were ?nally unanimously accepted for presentationby the Program Committee. Scaling up Machine Learning - Parallel and Distributed Approaches (Hardcover): Ron Bekkerman, Mikhail Bilenko, John Langford Scaling up Machine Learning - Parallel and Distributed Approaches (Hardcover)
Ron Bekkerman, Mikhail Bilenko, John Langford
R3,153 R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Save R487 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents an integrated collection of representative approaches for scaling up machine learning and data mining methods on parallel and distributed computing platforms. Demand for parallelizing learning algorithms is highly task-specific: in some settings it is driven by the enormous dataset sizes, in others by model complexity or by real-time performance requirements. Making task-appropriate algorithm and platform choices for large-scale machine learning requires understanding the benefits, trade-offs and constraints of the available options. Solutions presented in the book cover a range of parallelization platforms from FPGAs and GPUs to multi-core systems and commodity clusters, concurrent programming frameworks including CUDA, MPI, MapReduce and DryadLINQ, and learning settings (supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised and online learning). Extensive coverage of parallelization of boosted trees, SVMs, spectral clustering, belief propagation and other popular learning algorithms, and deep dives into several applications, make the book equally useful for researchers, students and practitioners.

Language Technology for Cultural Heritage - Selected Papers from the LaTeCH Workshop Series (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Caroline... Language Technology for Cultural Heritage - Selected Papers from the LaTeCH Workshop Series (Paperback, 2011 ed.)

R2,645 Discovery Miles 26 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The digital age has had a profound effect on our cultural heritage and the academic research that studies it. Staggering amounts of objects, many of them of a textual nature, are being digitised to make them more readily accessible to both experts and laypersons. Besides a vast potential for more effective and efficient preservation, management, and presentation, digitisation offers opportunities to work with cultural heritage data in ways that were never feasible or even imagined.
To explore and exploit these possibilities, an interdisciplinary approach is needed, bringing together experts from cultural heritage, the social sciences and humanities on the one hand, and information technology on the other. Due to a prevalence of textual data in these domains, language technology has a crucial role to play in this endeavour. Language technology can break through the "Google barrier" by offering the potential to analyse texts at advanced levels, extracting information and knowledge at the level of the humanities or social sciences researcher, who wants to know about the who, what, where, and when, but also the how and the why. At the same time cultural heritage data poses considerable challenges for existing language technology: technology aimed at "generic" language has to face such disparate problems as historical language variation, OCR digitisation errors, and near-extinct academic expertise.
This book is primarily intended for researchers in information technology and language processing who would like to receive a state-of-the-art overview of the whole breadth of the new and vibrant field of language technology for cultural heritage and its associated academic research in the humanities and social sciences. Researchers working in the target domains of cultural heritage, the social sciences and humanities will also find this book useful, as it provides an overview of how language technology can help them with their information needs. The book covers applications ranging from pre-processing and data cleaning, to the adaptation and compilation of linguistic resources, to personalisation, narrative analysis, visualisation and retrieval.

R1,500 Discovery Miles 15 000 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Research in the field of pattern recognition both in theo retical terms and in the area of appl ication continues to flourish. Pattern recognition is a fairly diverse field involving researchers whose primary disciplines spread over at least a half dozen fields. Possibly because of the great diversity of backgrounds but a common interest in certain broad areas of application, the field has grown so rapidly and yet seems to promise at least a similar growth rate for the future. This book is a collection containing some of the papers that were presented at the N. A. T. O. Advanced Study Institute held in Bandol, France, September 1975. The main purpose of the institute was to present material which would provide a basic background in the field. Thus, survey papers covering syntactic methods, picture processing, classification theory, and speech recognition were presented. This should have provided the listener (and we hope now, the reader) with an acquaintance with the basic tools, a look at some of the appl ications and an appraisal of how each of the particular topics will evolve. A more recent addition to the pattern recognition "family" is the work in the areas of economics and group choice. Since the process of recognizing and inter preting patterns is so fundamental, it probably is no surprise when a particular discipline is discovered to be amenable to the already developed techniques."
