The book gives an overview of the current state-of-the-art
concerning the activation and dissolution of cellulose in a broad
variety of solvents. Research on this topic can lead to new
pathways for the utilization of the most abundant terrestrial
biomolecule and may therefore be the basis for new green strategies
towards advanced materials. Leading scientists in the field show
different conceptions for the solubilization of cellulose. The long
history and groundbreaking developments in the field of polymer
chemistry, which are related to this subject, have lead to timely
alternatives to already established methods. In addition to
discussing attempts for the optimization of known dissolving
procedures, this book also details new solvent systems. New
solvents include inorganic and organic salt melts (ionic liquids),
new aqueous media, multi-component organic solvents and the
dissolution under partial derivatization of the polysaccharide. The
opportunities and the limitations of the solvents are demonstrated,
with a particular emphasis on the stability of the solutions and a
possible recycling of the solvent components.

Born in the Isle of Man of Irish/Welsh parentage, Noel Stuart nursed no other ambition than to work with animals. His lifelong passion and his interest in complimentary medicine combined to culminate in his eventual choice of career as a veterinary surgeon. His work as a vet and second career as a writer is a rich tapestry of down to earth practice alongside a sense of healing power beyond science. This is balanced by a great sense of humour running a sparkling thread through all that he writes. He can claim distinction as being one of the earlier vets to treat fish and has the dubious honour of force feeding "Daisy" an eight foot alligator. He has enjoyed being a 'lollipop man', school governor and Rotarian as well as being a choir member. The first two books "It's a Dog's Life' and 'Man and Beast', using local marketing have both had reprints. In his third book he is able to look back over his life from his origins in the Isle of Man, education in Ulster, despite the U-boat menace until his graduation as a vet in Dublin and meeting the love of his life. Together with Margaret, their adventures in practice take them to Loughborough, the Isle of Man and across Canada until they finally end up in Devon and Cornwall. During their life in Cornwall Noel becomes involved in fish diseases, homoeopathy and dowsing to complement general practice.

More than four decades have passed since surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was discovered. In today's world SERS has been established as a plasmon-based spectroscopy with ultra-high sensitivity and versatility at the forefront of the developments in plasmonics. SERS has been developing with the advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The "SERS world" has grown up markedly for the last 20 years or so, and recently the wider concept of, plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy was born. Plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy contains not only SERS but also tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS), surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF), and more. Through these novel spectroscopies various amazing properties of plasmons have become known, providing new exciting research fields. One of the main purposes of the book is to convey the enthusiastic discussion on plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy at the symposium to the scientific community. This book reports leading-edge advances in the theory of plasmonic enhancement and application of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy to biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, and medicine. Many books have been published about SERS, but this may be the first time that a book on a wide area of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy has ever been published. Born in rural Worcestershire in 1950, from an early age David Harwood learned about keeping animals before going on to study veterinary medicine at London's Royal Veterinary College. Once qualified, he became established as a farm animal vet, working throughout Southwest England. In this book, David tells his own story of working his way through veterinary school in the late 1960's, then working in farm practices (with plenty of anecdotes of rural characters, both human and non-human), as well as a vivid account of the demands, challenges, and thrills of an extraordinary veterinary life full of incidents (along with life and death moments). Besides the usual livestock caseload, he later came into contact with more unusual patients, such as ostriches, giraffes, ...and snails. While telling his story, David provides plenty of information on livestock diseases and conditions which will be of interest to fellow vets and livestock keepers, while also offering plenty of tips and tricks for aspiring vets to pick up along the way. Working as a UK government Veterinary Investigator, David provides a fascinating account of the CSI-style detective work needed to uncover the causes of illness and death in farm animals, often tracing these back to the farm environment or the animal's own behavior to determine the cause. He gained a unique insider's view of farm animal health issues during the outbreaks of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease), foot-and-mouth disease, and avian influenza (bird flu). David Harwood provides an honest and open appraisal of UK official ministry practices during a time of increasing officialdom and challenges, and he describes encounters with farmers while making decisions affecting their lives and livelihoods.
