Flocs in Water Treatment is the first of its kind - serving as a valuable aide-memoire for scientists, process engineers and other professionals engaged in water treatment. The framework described in Flocs in Water Treatment can also be applied to aggregated solids found both in the natural environment, and within a broad range of industries. Flocs (aggregated solid matter) resulting from the combined influence of coagulation and flocculation play a vital role in solid-liquid separation processes. The design and operation of water treatment plants demands a proper understanding of the ways in which flocs affect treatment systems and how their properties can be manipulated to increase treatment efficiency. Flocs in Water Treatment provides a comprehensive account of the ways in which flocs are formed, their characterization, and how they behave in practice. Flocs are complex entities, whose properties defy easy description and measurement. In spite of this, the authors provide a clear and discerning account of the current state of knowledge; this is rooted in science and draws on many disciplines. Based on their experiences in research and the workings of full scale treatment plants, the authors offer candid advice on tasks such as the measurement of floc properties and guidance on problems involving the use of chemicals for controlling floc properties within treatment systems.

As the quantity and quality of inland water sources decline, more coastal municipalities are looking at seawater desalination as a potential source of drinking water. The Long Beach Water Department (LBWD) developed an alternative technology to desalt seawater by using dual-staged nanofiltration (NF2). This novel NF system treats the first-stage permeate through a second stage in order to produce finished water with salinity levels that meet drinking water standards. Three commercially-available NF membranes were selected for this study based upon their designation as NF membranes by the manufacturers and their salt rejection characteristics. Results from the bench-scale evaluation were integrated in a performance-predicting model, which was subsequently calibrated against the results obtained with an 8-gpm pilot unit. The pilot-test plan considered the impact of temperature, pressure, and array configuration on permeate water quantity and quality. The percentage of desalinated water that could be blended into LBWD's distribution system was determined by taking into account the issues of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation, disinfectant residual, and corrosivity. Finally, viral challenge tests were considered to verify the inherent redundancy of the system and the impact that recycling streams would have on virus accumulation.

More than four decades have passed since surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was discovered. In today's world SERS has been established as a plasmon-based spectroscopy with ultra-high sensitivity and versatility at the forefront of the developments in plasmonics. SERS has been developing with the advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The "SERS world" has grown up markedly for the last 20 years or so, and recently the wider concept of, plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy was born. Plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy contains not only SERS but also tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS), surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF), and more. Through these novel spectroscopies various amazing properties of plasmons have become known, providing new exciting research fields. One of the main purposes of the book is to convey the enthusiastic discussion on plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy at the symposium to the scientific community. This book reports leading-edge advances in the theory of plasmonic enhancement and application of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy to biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, and medicine. Many books have been published about SERS, but this may be the first time that a book on a wide area of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy has ever been published. The book consists of two volumes; the first volume contains the introductory review by George Schatz followed by eight chapters, which are mainly concerned with SERS.
Chloramination of drinking water is not a new technology. Some water utilities have successfully used chloramines for over 40 years; other utilities have experienced problems including nitrification, stimulation of biological growth, an inability to maintain adequate chlorine residuals, and customer complaints about the taste and/or odor of the water. Today, many utilities are considering chloramines as a secondary disinfectant within their distribution system, primarily as an economical method to meet ever more stringent disinfection byproduct limits. The primary purpose of this project was to develop material that could be used as a concise and practical guidance manual for those responsible for chloramination at water works facilities. A survey was conducted by mail of 63 public water systems that use chloramines. Telephone interviews were used as a follow-up to clarify information and gain additional insight into daily operations. Thirteen utilities were selected for an in-depth on-site visit to establish today's best operating practice for chloramination. These results were compared against a review of the current pertinent literature. Finally, a user's guide was compiled for those implementing or using chloramines. The three principle aims of this substantially enlarged and revised volume are to define standardised patterns of meat cutting and ethnic variations, to provide a ready reference to the mainstream muscle foods available commercially or being developed scientifically around the world, and to help explain the properties of different meat cuts and muscle foods in terms of meat quality. This book provides a guide to many of the myriad of meat cuts and muscle foods now widely available internationally. Cutting patterns for beef, pork, lamb, game, poultry and fish are featured, plus a number of invertebrates such as crabs, lobsters, shrimp, squid and scallop that also produce straited muscle. Wholesale and retail meat cuts are described and cross-referenced - many being clearly illustrated and labelled - so that the reader may start with a country, or with the name of a specific meat cut to find the country of origin. In addition, the key scientific concepts required in understanding food myosystems are briefly outlined. For this second edition, information for ten countries has been added or expanded, bringing the total to 51. names in Arabic and Latin-American Spanish. Also, the entries for deep sea fish have been increased.
Exploring how changes in advanced technology deeply affect international politics, this book theoretically engages with the overriding relevance of investments in technological research, and the ways in which they directly foster a country's economic and military standing. Scholars and practitioners present important insights on the technical and social issues at the core of technology competition. Technology and International Relations emphasizes the importance of leadership styles, domestic political agendas and the relative weight of technologically driven countries in global affairs. It highlights the now widely shared belief among both developed and developing countries that technology will be the defining factor in international politics. The book also unpacks the complexity of real-life cases of key technological advances, including artificial intelligence, UAVs, satellites and the responses of governments and the private sector to rising technological challenges. This will be an important read for scholars of political science, international relations and international political economy, particularly those looking at the impact of technology and innovation.
