A Personal Journey Through Psychotherapy - A Case Study Revisited (Paperback): Susan M Fereday A Personal Journey Through Psychotherapy - A Case Study Revisited (Paperback)
Susan M Fereday
R768 Discovery Miles 7 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a personal account of the enduring value of an appropriate psychotherapeutic intervention, and is set within the author's lifespan to date. It is also a unique view of how it feels to be the subject of a published case study. Following a long period of resistance to the therapeutic process, a direct channel to the author's unconscious is established via the art of the written word. It is a first person, chronological account of the psychological signposts that relentlessly point the author toward an unavoidable therapeutic encounter, one that will ultimately have the strength to contain her frightening experience of mental disturbance. The reader is afforded the opportunity to watch the story unfold, and to draw their own academic conclusions. Some of the psychological processes are presented in 'real' time, and will help to illustrate the link between experience, theory and practice in psychotherapy.

Solution Focused Narrative Therapy (Paperback): Linda Metcalf Solution Focused Narrative Therapy (Paperback)
Linda Metcalf
R1,959 R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Save R490 (25%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This groundbreaking book is the first to provide a comprehensive model for effectively blending the two main postmodern brief therapy approaches: solution-focused and narrative therapies. It harnesses the power of both models-the strengths-based, problem-solving approach of SFT and the value-honoring and re-descriptive approach of Narrative Therapy--to offer brief, effective help to clients that builds on their strengths and abilities to envision and craft preferred outcomes. Authored by a leading trainer, teacher, and practitioner in the field, the book provides an overview of the history of both models and outlines their differences, similarities, limitations and strengths. It then demonstrates how to blend these two approaches in working with such issues as trauma, addictions, grief, relationship issues, family therapy and mood issues. Each concern is illustrated with a case study from practice with individual adults, adolescents, children, and families. Useful client dialogue and forms are included to help the clinician guide clients in practice. Each chapter concludes with a summary describing and reinforcing the principles of the topic and a personal exercise so the reader can experience the approach first hand. Key Features: Describes how two popular postmodern therapy models are combined to create a powerful new therapeutic approach-the first book to do so Includes case studies reflecting the model's use with individual adults, children, adolescents, and families Provides supporting dialogue and forms for practitioners Authored by a leading figure in SFT and its application in a variety of setting Presents an overview of the history of both models

The Beloved Ego - Foundations of the New Study of the Psyche (Hardcover): Wilhelm Stekel The Beloved Ego - Foundations of the New Study of the Psyche (Hardcover)
Wilhelm Stekel
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Wilhelm Stekel was an Austrian physician and psychologist and one of Freud's earliest followers. A prolific writer, this book originally published in 1921, was considered by the translator 'the best general introduction of its author to the English public', containing as is does many of his central ideas. Although the author had already fallen out with him by this time, in the preface to this book, he acknowledges Freud's significance to the field and says he regards his 'Psycho-Analysis as being a step towards a new psycho-therapy'.

The Authority of Tenderness - Dignity and the True Self in Psychoanalysis (Paperback): Paul Williams The Authority of Tenderness - Dignity and the True Self in Psychoanalysis (Paperback)
Paul Williams
R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This insightful and beautifully written work explores nonlinear processes of recovery of the loss of Self. The inherent healing power of hard-earned, wholehearted self-acceptance is conceived through the authority of tenderness. The book is the final volume in The Fifth Principle trilogy (the second book being Scum), which chronicled, through the course of one boy's lifetime, the methods of a mind which is not a mind, in its efforts to prevail under oppressive circumstances. The Authority of Tenderness comes at the end of the journey, is written by the adult self of the child, and uses poetic vignettes, references to foundational psychoanalytic literature and analyses of critical treatment situations to convey the experiences of someone who has been both patient and analyst. The book offers a vivid psychotherapeutic perspective for clinicians, trainees, students and general readers alike.

The Psychology of Pierre Janet (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover): Elton Mayo The Psychology of Pierre Janet (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover)
Elton Mayo
R1,289 Discovery Miles 12 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pierre Janet (1859 - 1947) is considered to be one of the founders of psychology, and pioneered research in the disciplines of psychology, philosophy and psychotherapy. Janet's most crucial research, particularly in the subjects of 'dissociation' and 'subconscious' - terms coined by him - is explored in this book, first published in 1952. As Janet did not publish much in English, these notes provide guidance on such areas of study as hysteria and hypnosis, obsessive thinking and the psychology of adaption. Elton Mayo's comprehensive collection is an important guide for any student with an interest in the history of psychology, psychopathology and social study, and Janet's revolutionary work in the field.

Upheavals in the Psychoanalytical Institutions II - Upheavals in the Institutions (Paperback, Revised edition): Manuela Utrilla... Upheavals in the Psychoanalytical Institutions II - Upheavals in the Institutions (Paperback, Revised edition)
Manuela Utrilla Robles
R891 Discovery Miles 8 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"This is a scholarly study in which the author explores a difficult subject matter that has been a tabooed topic in psychoanalysis. She undertakes a serious study of the underlying arguments as to why psychoanalysts have seldom been able to live in harmony with each other. In a very lucid and systematic manner, Dr Utrilla Robles examines how a discipline, in this case psychoanalysis, can be manipulated to its detriment. She explains the disquieting processes that take place, which impede the development of psychoanalysis. These influences insidiously infiltrate the organisational ranks as a kind of arguing which should ostensibly enrich psychoanalysis but instead deprives it of its creativity. For a discipline to prosper, it is necessary to have the freedom to air doubts, ask questions, raise hypotheses, and contrast discoveries by sharing them with others, debating different positions to reflect on the discussions, and to change one s views if necessary. This type of attitude stands in stark contrast to the kind of thinking that excludes and establishes norms to demonstrate how one is right in leaving no room for other ideas and creates research projects, which cannot be refuted. The author s intention in this book is to study and shed light on these phenomena that have been considered a taboo because of the secrecy surrounding them."-- from the Foreword by Dr Gunther Perdigao"

Illustrations of Madness (Psychology Revivals) (Hardcover): John Haslam Illustrations of Madness (Psychology Revivals) (Hardcover)
John Haslam; Edited by Roy Porter
R3,501 Discovery Miles 35 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

John Haslam's Illustrations of Madness, written in 1810, occupies a special place in psychiatric history, it was the first book-length account of one single psychiatric case written by a British psychiatrist. John Haslam, apothecary to London's Bethlem Hospital, and a leading psychiatrist of the early-nineteenth century, details the case of James Tilly Matthews, who had been a patient in the hospital for some ten years. Matthews claimed he was sane, as did his friends and certain doctors. Haslam, on behalf of the Bethlem authorities, contended he was insane, and attempted to demonstrate this by presenting a detailed account of Matthew's own delusional system, as far as possible in Matthew's own words. Originally published in 1988 as part of the Tavistock Classics in the History of Psychiatry series, Roy Porter's Introduction to this facsimile reprint of an historic book goes beyond Haslam's text to reveal the extraordinary psychiatric politics surrounding Matthew's confinement and the court case it produced, leading up to Haslam's dismissal from his post. Still relevant today, Haslam's account can be used as material upon which to base a modern diagnosis of Matthew's disorder.

Empathy II (Psychology Revivals) (Hardcover): Joseph Lichtenberg, Melvin Bornstein, Donald Silver Empathy II (Psychology Revivals) (Hardcover)
Joseph Lichtenberg, Melvin Bornstein, Donald Silver
R5,358 Discovery Miles 53 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When the late Heinz Kohut defined psychoanalysis as the science of empathy and introspection, he sparked a debate that has animated psychoanalytic discourse ever since. What is the relationship of empathy to psychoanalysis? Is it a constituent of analytical technique, an integral aspect of the therapeutic action of analysis, or simply a metaphor for a mode of observation better understood via 'classical' theory and terminology? The dialogue about empathy, which is really a dialogue about the nature of the analytic process, continues in this two-volume set, originally published in 1984. In Volume I, several illuminating attempts to define empathy are followed by Kohut's essay, 'Introspection, Empathy, and the Semicircle of Mental Health.' Kohut's paper, in turn, ushers in a series of original contributions on 'Empathy as a Perspective in Psychoanalysis.' The volume ends with five papers which strive to demarcate an empathic approach to various areas of artistic endeavour, including the appreciation of visual art. Volume II continues the dialogue with a series of developmental studies which explore the role of empathy in early child care at the same time as they chart the emergence of the young child's capacity to empathize. In the concluding section, 'Empathy in Psychoanalytic Work,' contributors and discussants return to the arena of technique. They not only theorize about empathy in relation to analytic understanding and communication, but address issues of nosology, considering how the empathic vantage point may be utilized in the treatment of patients with borderline and schizophrenic pathology. In their critical attention to the many dimensions of empathy - philosophical, developmental, therapeutic, artistic - the contributors collectively bear witness to the fact that Kohut has helped to shape new questions, but not set limits to the search for answers. The product of their efforts is an anatomical exploration of a topic whose relevance for psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is only beginning to be understood.

Between Psychology and Psychotherapy (Psychology Revivals) - A Poetics of Experience (Hardcover): Miller Mair Between Psychology and Psychotherapy (Psychology Revivals) - A Poetics of Experience (Hardcover)
Miller Mair
R5,353 Discovery Miles 53 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this highly original and thought-provoking work the late Miller Mair puts forward his ideas for a new psychology. First published in 1989, he deals with issues of fundamental importance to the future of a psychology guided by genuine enquiry and concern rather than mere professional self-interest. Crossing and re-crossing boundaries between psychology, psychotherapy and philosophy, and between 'science' and 'art', he demonstrates the linkages between the personal and the impersonal, subject and object, inside and outside, with a daring not previously risked by anyone working in the area. Dr Mair stresses the importance of a poetic approach in psychology and psychotherapy, and the need to explore and understand the nature of psychology through an imaginative freedom of language. He emphasizes that a poetic awareness and attentiveness is fundamental to any pursuit of understanding of ourselves or others. This is a very personal book, concerned with personal knowledge, but it is meant for anyone who seeks to understand themselves and others, and what is involved in coming to such understanding. Focusing on ordinary human experience, and moving towards literary and artistic modes of expression, the author invites you to enter in, follow what you think and feel, as he proposes a radical revision of much that is accepted in psychology and in psychotherapy.

Fundamentals of Behavior Analytic Research (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): Alan Poling, Laura L. Methot, Mark G. LeSage Fundamentals of Behavior Analytic Research (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
Alan Poling, Laura L. Methot, Mark G. LeSage
R5,268 Discovery Miles 52 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

By the end of his long life, B. F. Skinner (1904-1990) had become one of the most influential and best known of psychologists (Gilgen, 1982; Heyduke & Fenigstein, 1984). An important feature of the approach to the study of behavior that he championed, behavior analysis, is the intensive study of individual subjects over time. This approach, which is characterized by the use of within-subject experimental designs, repeated and direct measures of behavior, and graphic analysis of data, stands in marked contrast to the research methods favored by many nonbehavioral psychologists. Skinner discussed the advantages of his approach in a number of books (e.g., Skinner, 1938, 1953, 1979), but never devoted a book to methodology. Sidman (1960) and Johnson and Pennypack (1993b) did devote books to behavior analytic research methodology. These books are of excep tionally high quality and should be read carefully by anyone interested in behavior analysis. They are sophisticated, however, and are not easy reads for most neophyte behaviorists. Introductory-level books devoted entirely to methods of applied behavior analysis (e.g., Kazdin, 1982; Barlow & Hersen, 1984) are easier to understand, but somewhat limited in coverage."

Handbook of Vocational Rehabilitation and Disability Evaluation - Application and Implementation of the ICF (Hardcover, 2015... Handbook of Vocational Rehabilitation and Disability Evaluation - Application and Implementation of the ICF (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Reuben Escorpizo, Soeren Brage, Debra Homa, Gerold Stucki
R4,321 Discovery Miles 43 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents the state of the art in the application and implementation of the WHO's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in the areas of vocational rehabilitation as a primary topic and disability evaluation as a secondary topic. Application of the ICF and implementation strategies toward a holistic and comprehensive approach to work disability and vocational rehabilitation programs are presented along with clinical cases and exercises. The ICF as a topic in health and disability has been gaining momentum since its approval by the World Health Assembly in 2001, and great progress has been made since then. However, the integration if the ICF in the realm of vocational rehabilitation has been lacking despite the fact that work and employment are a major area in people's lives, particularly those who have work disability. This book will advance the professional practice of vocational rehabilitation, rehabilitation counseling, occupational medicine, and allied health science.

The Myth of Empowerment - Women and the Therapeutic Culture in America (Hardcover, New): Dana Becker The Myth of Empowerment - Women and the Therapeutic Culture in America (Hardcover, New)
Dana Becker
R2,854 Discovery Miles 28 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Dana Becker writes that for the past few decades women have been encouraged to believe that by taking care of their psychological selves they are becoming ever more powerful. Not so. In this intelligent and chilling examination, Becker traces how the repackaging of the psychological as power has led to the ultimate colonization of women's psyches. She is a beautiful writer, an exacting historian of ideas, and a tremendously intelligent guide through these troubled waters."
--Sharon Lamb, Professor of Psychology, Saint Michael's College and author of "The Secret Lives of Girls" and "The Trouble with Blame,"

"I was impressed with how the author marshaled this critical literature into a coherent and...compelling narrative."
--"Social Service Review"

""The Myth of Empowerment" artfully documents 150 years of American efforts at self-improvement. Re-reading such sociological classics as Bellah, Lasch, Reiff, and Reissman, Becker expands (and sometimes explodes) their arguments by inserting women into their accounts of social life. Moving next to a savvy account of popular women-centered therapies arising out of the late 20th century feminism, Becker shows how they unwittingly incorporate some of the very premises that they repudiate. The Myth of Empowerment--delightfully informed by a witty sensibility, written with brio and clarity, and cast in elegant prose--is compelling reading. "
--Jeanne Maracek

The Myth of Empowerment surveys the ways in which women have been represented and influenced by the rapidly growing therapeutic culture--both popular and professional--from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The middle-class woman concerned about her health and herability to care for others in an uncertain world is not as different from her late nineteenth-century white middle-class predecessors as we might imagine. In the nineteenth century she was told that her moral virtue was her power; today, her power is said to reside in her ability to "relate" to others or to take better care of herself so that she can take care of others. Dana Becker argues that ideas like empowerment perpetuate the myth that many of the problems women have are medical rather than societal; personal rather than political.

From mesmerism to psychotherapy to the "Oprah Winfrey Show," women have gleaned ideas about who they are as psychological beings. Becker questions what women have had to gain from these ideas as she recounts the story of where they have been led and where the therapeutic culture is taking them.

Enduring Migration through the Life Cycle (Paperback): Eileen McGinley, Arturo Varchevker Enduring Migration through the Life Cycle (Paperback)
Eileen McGinley, Arturo Varchevker
R1,130 Discovery Miles 11 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Migration in the last decades resulted in mayor conflicts in all aspects of society. This book addresses the psychological response to migration and explores the emotional response to both, the change of habitat and changes in life cycle. Quite often the migrant idealizes the new habitat and the country of origin is devalued and sometimes there is a swing in the opposite direction.Although other psychoanalytical concepts describe the emotional reactions and enduring pathological problems, Migration provide a wider and deeper understanding towards the capacity and possibilities of adaptation to a new situation. The chapters are structured according to the Life Cycle and in addition we have included chapters where the authors address socio-cultural issues.Freud and post Freudian theories are further developed of our understanding of the function of the mind. The reader will become aware of the importance of internal migration. The exploration of migration phenomenon enables a deeper and wider view of the emotional vicissitudes activated by significant moves or geographical changes or developmental changes. Migration highlights the sense of identity, psychic development and creativity.Psychoanalysis contributes to a deeper exploration of the mental functioning of migrants and internal migration and this has improved the therapeutic possibilities of helping individuals, couples families."

Enduring Trauma Through the Life Cycle (Paperback): Eileen McGinley, Arturo Varchevker Enduring Trauma Through the Life Cycle (Paperback)
Eileen McGinley, Arturo Varchevker
R1,211 Discovery Miles 12 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

his is a multi-authored book on the complex subject of psychic trauma as encountered at different stages of the life-cycle, and describes some of the clinical challenges, technical issues and differing theoretical approaches that arise when working with the traumatized individual. The concept of psychic trauma is a complex subject, but one which has more recently gained prominence. This book contains a collection of papers which grew out of a series of talks given by the Psychoanalytic Forum of the British Psychoanalytical Society entitled Trauma Through the Life Cycle. The authors, all highly respected authorities in their fields, give insights into what we mean by psychic trauma, what constitutes a traumatic event, and the psychopathological sequelae to trauma at different stages of life. Judith Trowell and Nick Midgley look at the effects of infantile and childhood traumas. Catalina Bronstein and Sara Flanders, from differing psychoanalytic perspectives, consider how childhood traumas can become reactivated in adolescence and color subsequent developmental situations. Ron Britton and Joanne Stubley consider the effects of trauma on time and memory, the concept of Nachtralichkeit, and Britton makes the distinction between endogenous and exogenous aspects of trauma. Arturo Varchevker and Isky Gordon consider what factors may be intrinsically traumatic for the person reaching old age, illness or death. Francis Grier considers a more recently acknowledged source of trauma, which is the hidden nature of the cumulative trauma of the child who is sent away early to boarding school and its effects on the developing adult s capacity for intimate couple relationships. Finally, Michael Brierley and Nicholas Stargardt both write convincingly on societal traumas, Brierley on the social and cultural traumas endured by the native American Indian tribe, the Crow, and how individual experiences resonated with group experiences, and the historian, Stargardt, on his ground-breaking work on the experiences of German children during the Second World War."

Theory and Practice of Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (Paperback, New): Ferruccio Osimo, Mark J. Stein Theory and Practice of Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (Paperback, New)
Ferruccio Osimo, Mark J. Stein
R2,004 Discovery Miles 20 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book opens with an introduction to and history of the experiential dynamic therapies (EDT) including the groundbreaking Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) of Habib Davanloo and its subsequent development. The centrality of relationship in therapy is emphasized and the current state of the art and science described. Material from interviews with David Malan is presented, sharing some of his experiences, thoughts and insights over decades of clinical practice, research into and promotion of short-term dynamic therapies. The essential ingredients of experiential dynamic therapies are described, and the reader is orientated to the practice of EDT. Key characteristics of taking care of the real relationship, mirroring, history taking, and putting into perspective are also presented. In addition, high technical content, experiential-dynamic interventions, including defense re-structuring, emotional maieutics, anxiety regulation, dealing with the Super-ego, connecting corners of the Triangle of Others, and Self- and Other- Re-structuring are introduced and discussed. A coding system used throughout the clinical chapters to clarify the nature, and application, of therapist interventions is described. The conceptualization of "character hologram" is explained in detail, and illustrated with clinical material.Throughout the book, annotated extracts from real therapy sessions are presented to illustrate characteristics of EDTs in clinical practice and, wherever possible, follow-up is presented. The clinical chapters describe the application of experiential dynamic individual and group approaches within the UK National Health Service and Counselling Services, primarily, but also in other Countries having similar public health services (Holland, Israel and Italy). The relevance of experiential dynamic approaches in providing case management and supervision, and in treating the more complex presentations of common mental health problems is discussed. A research chapter provides an overview of EDT-related research to date. It is argued that EDTs represent a promising integration of a number of therapeutic principles, and their place within current mental health policy in the National Health Service in the UK is outlined.

Francoise Dolto
R1,212 Discovery Miles 12 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is Francoise Dolto s 1939 medical thesis and is dedicated to medical practitioners, paediatricians, and parents without prior knowledge of psychoanalysis. Francoise Dolto s aim was to sensitize people to the unconscious dimensions of many problems in children. She demonstrates here, through sixteen case studies, how often children s difficulties at school and at home be they behavioral or due to impaired learning abilities are the expression of psychological issues linked with their developing sexuality and castration anxiety, and result in physical symptoms such as enuresis and encopresis.Dolto points out that the awareness of the self and self-responsibility often develops for young people in families in which the parents do not know how to listen or even more importantly cannot be listened to with trust. There is also a summary of Freud s theories of the different stages of the evolution of the drives, as well as the central developmental role played by the castration complex, castration anxiety, and the Oedipus Complex."

Alessandra Lemma
R1,241 Discovery Miles 12 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Nature dictates that as individuals we are conceived, are born, and then at some point later die. The shape of the arc that we follow, involving growth and development with eventual decline, is something that we might all like to influence. It has been argued that the same basic curve, however, is followed by societies, civilisations and indeed organisations. How does an organisation influence its trajectory? How do organisations avoid the pull towards conservatism and protectionism associated with the developmental plateau found at the top of the curve? . I think that in this book Professor Alessandra Lemma has given us something of an insight into this process within one organisation, the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. In bringing together this collection of papers, Professor Lemma has undertaken the role of skilled gardener herself. The work of the Trust is now broad. Training and education makes up almost half of the activity, while Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services over half of the clinical work. Professor Lemma has, in this first volume, broadly focused her attention on our work with Adolescents and Adults She has clearly selected her authors for their quality and supported them with similar care. All of this is evident in the chapters that comprise this book, and in the description of an organisation struggling to evolve in a manner that links it inextricably to the communities and society within which it is situated as much as to its own history."From the foreword by Dr Matthew Patrick, Chief Executive, Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust"
