This is becoming an integrated component in the supply chain system, with players becoming aware of the regulations and needs of the customer. It is imperative for production firms to look at the procurement activity as one of the strategic enablers for sustaining the business in the competitive global environment. This book will provide industries with an understanding of the concepts related to sustainable procurement policies and its implementation. Provides decision and theory development models in sustainable procurement supply chains Includes contributions in all three major analytics: descriptive, predictive, and perspectives in the context of sustainable procurement supply chain Discusses new business models with suppliers and opportunities for co-branding Covers how to develop new tools to measure and allocate the gains from sustainable practices among stakeholders Analyses the science of translating data into meaningful and actionable insights

Supply Chain Construction - The Basics for Networking the Flow of Material, Information, and Cash (Hardcover): William T. Walker Supply Chain Construction - The Basics for Networking the Flow of Material, Information, and Cash (Hardcover)
William T. Walker
R2,564 Discovery Miles 25 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

All too often, entrepreneurs start small businesses unaware of their need for a supply chain network. And, large companies are acquired and their product lines merged with little regard for supply chain network integration and rationalization. Written for practitioners by a practitioner with 40 years of experience, Supply Chain Construction: The Basics for Networking the Flow of Material, Information, and Cash presents an integrated, comprehensive blueprint for building and/or rebuilding an end-to-end supply chain. Emphasizing flexibility and strength, the book explores optimal ways to withstand product evolution, contingencies, organizational life cycles, and disasters for the long haul. Each chapter begins with a storyline describing the interpersonal relationships and intrapersonal conflicts that attend change. This is followed by a logical sequence of checklists, diagrams, maps, mathematical models, and spreadsheets for each topic. The author presents a 20-step blueprint that defines the supply chain network container and its product contents and includes example applications of the blueprint to nontraditional businesses found in small to medium-sized companies. He also includes decision factor charts for selecting the right suppliers, factories, and distributors; comprehensive examples of both forward and reverse supply chain network construction; and detailed explanations of inbound, midbound, and outbound logistics considerations. Just as a surgeon performing a delicate operation needs to understand the consequences of cutting into an intersection of the body's internal organs, you, the supply chain practitioner, need to understand the consequences of cutting into an intersection of a network's material flow, information flow, and cash flow. Covering the practical issues of highly integrated networks woven together by corporate relationships and enabled by information technology, this book shows you how to systematically build and/or rebuild a robust supply chain that not only ensures growth, but also solidifies the future of your company as a whole.

Achieve best practices in supply chain management

Much is being written about global supply chain and sourcing options emerging in today's marketplace. Transforming supply chain management to achieve operations excellence is a mandate for many companies globally. "Supply Chain Transformation" walks you through this potentially difficult process and gets you started on the journey. Much more than just a how-to book, it's a why-to book that is as compelling for any business person as it is for supply chain management professionals. This book provides an invaluable road map to companies looking to transform their supply chains and organizations to achieve best practice results, beginning with guidance onhow to make the case for change. Change is inevitable; growth is optional.Includes real world cases and illustrationsOffers a step-by-step road map to transforming your supply chainExplains "how" to obtain "senior management" commitment to transformationCovers sourcing, production, and logistics process integration points with product development, marketing, sales, and finance processes as well as emerging technologies (RFID, Cloud computing, telematics, ERP, GPS/LBS & others)

One of the biggest hurdles to supply chain transformation is overcoming a culture that is resistant to change. "Supply Chain Transformation" helps you understand the cultural resistance and evaluate where change is needed most, and then develop the game plan for overcoming resistance to achieve best practice results.

Architecting Fail-Safe Supply Networks (Hardcover): Shabnam Rezapour, Amirhossein Khosrojerdi, Golnoosh Rasoulifar, Janet K... Architecting Fail-Safe Supply Networks (Hardcover)
Shabnam Rezapour, Amirhossein Khosrojerdi, Golnoosh Rasoulifar, Janet K Allen, Jitesh H. Panchal, …
R5,829 Discovery Miles 58 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A fail-safe supply network is designed to mitigate the impact of variations and disruptions on people and corporations. This is achieved by (1) developing a network structure to mitigate the impact of disruptions that distort the network structure and (2) planning flow through the network to neutralize the effects of variations. In this monograph, we propose a framework, develop mathematical models and provide examples of fail-safe supply network design. We show that, contrary to current thinking as embodied in the supply network literature, disruption management decisions made at the strategic network design level are not independent from variation management decisions made at the operational level. Accordingly, we suggest that it is beneficial to manage disruptions and variations concurrently in supply networks. This is achieved by architecting fail-safe supply networks, which are characterized by the following elements: reliability, robustness, flexibility, structural controllability, and resilience. Organizations can use the framework presented in this monograph to manage variations and disruptions. Managers can select the best operational management strategies for their supply networks considering variations in supply and demand, and identify the best network restoration strategies including facility fortification, backup inventory, flexible production capacity, flexible inventory, and transportation route reconfiguration. The framework is generalizable to other complex engineered networks.

Strategic Sourcing Management - Structural and Operational Decision-making (Paperback): Olivier Bruel Strategic Sourcing Management - Structural and Operational Decision-making (Paperback)
Olivier Bruel
R1,764 Discovery Miles 17 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Strategic Sourcing Management examines procurement and supply management in detail, covering the three dimensions of competitiveness, effectiveness and efficiency. Written by Olivier Bruel, Professor Emeritus HEC Paris, and a team of contributing experts from academia, consulting and industry, the book is organised into four parts: strategic decisions; operational management of procurement and related supply chain; management of human resources and dedicated information systems; management of performance and change. This book has been written with a comprehensive global and coherent approach but the chapters are self-standing, enabling the reader to dip into different sections according to need. Strategic Sourcing Management considers both tactical and strategic perspectives that link with a corporate strategy and it includes dedicated chapters on how to set up a Strategic Sourcing function. The text is enriched with clear graphics and solid examples of best practice. Strategic Sourcing Management is a robust text based on both research and experience, so an essential reference for practitioners and academics working in or studying procurement and supply management. It is suitable for anyone involved in procurement and supply management at a senior level but also for general management enabling them to understand the mechanisms of value creation through Strategic Sourcing.

Lean Supply Chain Management Essentials - A Framework for Materials Managers (Paperback): Bill Kerber, Brian J. Dreckshage Lean Supply Chain Management Essentials - A Framework for Materials Managers (Paperback)
Bill Kerber, Brian J. Dreckshage
R2,283 Discovery Miles 22 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Presenting an alternate approach to supply chain management, Lean Supply Chain Management Essentials: A Framework for Materials Managers explains why the traditional materials planning environment, typically embodied by an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, is an ineffective support system for a company that wants to adopt Lean practices. It begins by defining supply chain management basics, including roles, objectives, and responsibilities from a traditional framework. Next, it describes Lean basics and explores the conflicts between Lean and the traditional framework.

The book focuses on the materials management aspects of Lean, such as leveling work into the value stream, heijunka scheduling, standard work, and the concept of intervals, including Every Part Every Interval (EPEI). By combining traditional materials management tools, such as Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP), with Lean manufacturing approaches and applying them to different manufacturing environments, the authors clarify the logic behind why you are doing what you re doing with Lean components and how they fit together as a system. Specifically, they explain how to:

  • Determine which leveling strategy to use to smooth production
  • Calculate interval to determine lot sizes in various production environments
  • Apply Lean to purchasing, warehouse, and logistics areas
  • Use your value stream map for green initiatives and risk management
  • Replace capacity planning and shop floor control with visual factory, operator balance charts, EPEI, and plan for every part

Illustrating why balancing demand and capacity is better than trying to balance supply and demand, the book includes a definitive chart that matches Lean tools to the planning and control charts that have served as the model for ERP systems. It integrates the principles learned from Toyota s fifty-plus-year journey with Lean principles to provide the up-to-date understanding required to approach the application of Lean to your supply chain with a methodology that allows for experimentation, learning, and continuous improvement.

Bid Writing for Project Managers (Hardcover, New Ed): David Cleden Bid Writing for Project Managers (Hardcover, New Ed)
David Cleden
R4,485 Discovery Miles 44 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

At what stage in the process do commercial projects go wrong? Some of the worst problems (unrealistic objectives, faulty assumptions, and poorly understood constraints) are 'programmed in' at conception when the bid is written, long before the project manager is brought on board. If the bid is misconceived, no amount of clever project management is going to recover the situation. Involving the designated project manager at the bidding stage is becoming the norm in many commercial organizations. Some make the project manager the bid manager so they can direct all aspects of the project's conception. Getting the bid right is the essence of planning for project success, and is the main theme of this book. However, many project managers are unfamiliar with the pitfalls of competitive bidding and don't know how to balance a compelling sales message against a realistic delivery plan. Bid Writing for Project Managers will guide prospective project managers through the bid-writing lifecycle, providing comprehensive guidelines and numerous tips on how to craft a winning bid and how to set the project up with the best possible chance of success.

Takaaki Hoda, Richard B. Dasher
R1,071 Discovery Miles 10 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book discusses the concepts, types, models, and patterns of Japan's Hometown Tax Donation Payment system, to provide a clear picture of this newly developed unique and innovative fund-raising tool used by municipalities. It also sheds light on the influences that reciprocal gifts provided by each municipality to donors have on local economies by reviewing empirical works and surveys targeting local business owners and local financial institutions. A distinguishing feature of the book is that it introduces a new social finance mechanism that is unique to the Japanese market and could provide policy implications for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as regional development. Furthermore, the book explores the efficacy of the demand-pull approach to support-strengthening SMEs, especially in rural areas. Finally, the book identifies some lessons learned from the system with a view toward advancing research on this phenomenon and making the system efficient and sustainable. As a whole, the book can provide ample benefits to novices, academics, researchers, and policymakers interested in Hometown Tax Donation Payment, an innovative social finance tool. Strategic Procurement - Organizing Suppliers and Supply Chains for Competitive Advantage (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition):... Strategic Procurement - Organizing Suppliers and Supply Chains for Competitive Advantage (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Caroline Booth
R1,027 Discovery Miles 10 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A company's success is determined by its ability to utilize all its assets. Yet two assets often neglected by the boardroom are the amount it spends on goods and services and the expertise of the organisation's key suppliers. This highly accessible book will help you understand how to tap into these assets to secure competitive advantage. With application to organisations in all industries internationally, Strategic Procurement details why procurement is critical to successful business performance. It explores the strategic value of procurement to business and the potential for significant cost savings through maximising value from suppliers and third-party spend. A lot has changed in the world of strategic procurement. While many developments have served to reinforce the business value of good procurement practices, there are many risks associated with poor procurement. On the upside, procurement's role has increased in many recent mega-mergers. On the downside, there are glaring examples of supply continuity issues triggered by natural disasters; reputational issues related to supply chains of companies like BP and Apple; and the inadvertent role played by suppliers as the weakest link in cyber-crime. This second edition of Strategic Procurement has been thoroughly updated to reflect these developments. Besides real-life case studies, there is a new chapter on procurement's role in delivering successful mergers and acquisitions as well as three new chapters exploring the mitigants to a variety of supplier-related risks. Additionally, there are expanded sections on corporate responsibility, procurement proficiency, good procurement across the organisation, and new ways of supplier collaboration.

Stakeholder Relationship Management - A Maturity Model for Organisational Implementation (Hardcover, New edition): Lynda Bourne Stakeholder Relationship Management - A Maturity Model for Organisational Implementation (Hardcover, New edition)
Lynda Bourne
R4,486 Discovery Miles 44 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In any activity an organisation undertakes, whether strategic, operational or tactical, the activity can only be successful with the input, commitment and support of its people - stakeholders. Gaining and maintaining the support and commitment of stakeholders requires a continuous process of engaging the right stakeholders at the right time and understanding and managing their expectations. Unfortunately, most organisations have difficulty implementing such culture change, and need assistance and guidance to implement a consistent process for identification and management of stakeholders and their changing expectations. As a continuous improvement process, stakeholder management requires understanding and support from everyone in the organisation from the CEO to the short-term contractor. This requires the concepts and practices of effective stakeholder management to become embedded in the culture of the organisation: 'how we do things around here', this book provides the 'road map' to help organisations achieve these objectives. The text has two specific purposes. Firstly, it is an 'how-to' book providing the fundamental processes and practices for improving stakeholder management in endeavours such as projects, and program management offices (PMO), it also gives guidance on organisational survival during mergers and acquisitions, preparing for the tender bidding, and marketing campaigns. Secondly, Lynda Bourne's book is for organisations that have recognised the importance of stakeholder engagement to their success, it is a guidebook for assessing their current maturity regarding implementation of stakeholder relationship management with a series of guidelines and milestones for achieving the preferred level of maturity.

Purchasing and Supply Chain Management - A Sustainability Perspective (Paperback, 2nd edition): Mickey. Howard, Joe Miemczyk,... Purchasing and Supply Chain Management - A Sustainability Perspective (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Mickey. Howard, Joe Miemczyk, Thomas Johnsen
R1,402 Discovery Miles 14 020 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

For too long, business has focused on short-term cost advantages through low-cost country sourcing with little regard for the longer-term implications of global sustainability. Purchasing and Supply Chain Management, Second Edition, not only fully addresses the environmental, social and economic challenges of how companies manage purchasing and supply chains, but also delves deeper into emerging areas such as modern slavery, digital technologies and circular supply chains. In addition to explaining the basic principles and processes of both purchasing and supply chain management, the book evaluates how to develop strategic and sustainable purchasing and supply chain management. Our key message is that purchasing and supply chain management needs to focus on value creation rather than cost cutting. This requires the development of new purchasing and supply chain models that involve circular supply structures, supply chain transparency and collaboration with new stakeholders in traditional sourcing and supply chain settings. Aimed at students, educators and practitioners the book integrates sustainability into each chapter as a core element of purchasing and supply chain management. This second edition incorporates new examples and case studies from industry throughout, striking a balance between theoretical frameworks and guidelines for implementation in practice.

The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics (Hardcover): Jonathan Cowie, Stephen Ison The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics (Hardcover)
Jonathan Cowie, Stephen Ison
R6,760 Discovery Miles 67 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Transport Economics offers the first state of the art overview of the discipline of transport economics as it stands today, reflective of key research and policy. Transport is an important area of study and one which is problem rich, stimulating a great deal of debate in areas which impact on everyday lives. Much of this focuses on the practicalities of the modern-day phenomenon of mass movement and all of the issues which surround it. The discipline of economics is central to this debate, and consequently the study and application of transport economics has a chief role to play in seeking to address subjects relating to major transport issues. It can be argued that at the very heart of any transport issue or problem lies the underlying economics of the situation - understand that and you alleviate the problem. Featuring contributions from world-leading scholars and practitioners from across the globe, all of the chapters within this book are written from a practical perspective; theory is applied and developed using real-world examples. The book examines concepts, issues, ideas and practicalities of transport provision in five key topic areas: public transport public transport reform economic development and transport modelling transport and the environment freight transport. A real strength of the book is in linking theory to practice, and hence the 'economics' that are examined in this text are not the economics of the abstract, but rather the economics of everyday living. Practical and insightful, this volume is an essential reference for any student or researcher working in all areas of transport provision, ranging from planning, appraisal, regulation and freight; and for all practitioners looking to develop their professional knowledge and who are seeking professional accreditation.

Many production managers have de-stocked excessively large inventories, gone lean, experimented with continuous improvement processes and introduced new working practices. These interventions have largely failed. Businesses have also failed to invest in the workforce that undertakes improvements. This means that cash flow stops quickly, stocks are depleted to zero and customers lose confidence. Systems for Manufacturing Excellence looks at how people and technology work effectively together to generate high performance manufacturing and service operations. Not everyone is a Toyota but that does not mean we cannot learn from such businesses. The book will present a logic, variety of approaches and methods that underpin the different models of high performance used by 'world class' businesses. The authors use examples from their training with Toyota, work with Tesco, and many world class manufacturing businesses that form their research agenda. The book will help teams run each part of their production process for effectiveness and efficiency, with a high level of discipline that supports excellence in performance.
