Books > Business & Economics > Business & management > Management of specific areas > Purchasing & supply management
Supply chain management is a well-developed area. The traditional supply chains are dynamic systems which include the forward and reverse flows of physical products and the related information and fund. However, a service supply chain is different because the real "product" may take the form of a "service" which implies that many traditionally crucial decisions in supply chain management such as product shipping problems are no longer important. Here, a service supply chain is defined as a supply network that transfers resources into services or servitised products, with or without physical products, to satisfy customer needs. As a result, managing a service supply chain system requires innovative strategies with new models. Currently, there is an absence of a comprehensive reference source that provides the state-of-the-art findings on this important topic. It will thus be significant to develop a well-balanced edited volume that includes both theoretical results (from different perspectives) and application cases/studies on service supply chain systems. This book is a pioneering text on service supply chain systems. It features papers which adopt the systems engineering approach in conducting service supply chain analysis. It includes both theoretical results (from different perspectives) and application cases/studies on service supply chain systems. It will be a good reference book for industrialists and academics who are interested in the service industry, service operations, service management, and service sciences.

This very practical guide describes the whole process of contracting for goods and services, from selecting tenderers to placing a contract. It details the key topics that are necessary for success, such as contract strategy, contract types, contract law and evaluating tenders. Whilst the book also addresses the project context in which purchasing takes place, the subject matter could equally be applied to any business context. The treatment of the subject assumes no prior knowledge but, at the same time, provides the experienced person with new, and sometimes unconventional, insights into the subject. The book includes personal experiences, cases and exercises in order to root the subject into the real world. The Project Manager's Guide to Purchasing has been structured so that the reader can choose the chapter topic areas that they wish to study in isolation. Where necessary references are provided to complement the individual chapters. Illustrations of key documents in the purchasing and contracting process are also provided.

Integrated supply chain planning is well understood by theory and widely applied in practice - however, only with respect to intra-organisational supply chains. In inter-organisational supply chains, an additional, yet unresolved problem arises: due to confidentiality reasons, decentralized parties keep their local data private, which prevents an integrated planning. Local planning procedures such as upstream planning, which are usually applied then, result in suboptimal solutions for the supply chain as a whole. In this work, new mechanisms for inter-organizational, collaborative supply chain planning are presented. These mechanisms are able to identify the systemwide optimum for several classes of supply chain planning problems. They can be applied by two or more self-interested parties and do not require a trusted third party. Extensive computational tests for randomly generated and real-word data suggest a favorable performance of these mechanisms.
The enterprise-focused framework of supply chain, which an overwhelming majority of books on supply chain management (SCM) have adopted, falls short in explaining recent developments in the real world, especially the so-called Wal-Mart model, in which a 'factory' is a virtual logistics network of multiple international manufacturing firms. The book fills the gap and examines supply chain and transport logistics. The success of the Wal-Mart model rests on dynamic innovations in two key dimensions, namely, all-mode logistics service facilitation and industrial organization of supply chains, on which existing SCM textbooks have little coverage. For example, managing transport utility and facility, such as seaports and airports, has become expected parts of logistics and SCM, especially in an international orientation; which, however, are seldom covered in the textbooks on SCM and logistics. Supply chain and transport logistics as termed in this book is precisely based on this intriguing interrelationship, referring to supply-chain centered logistics of enterprise-crossing characteristics, including both service facilitation and industrial organization (IO) aspects of logistics. This book also includes the development of a unified methodological framework which underpins all the characteristics of the intriguing interrelationship between supply chain management and logistics. It covers many aspects of the important and innovative developments well. The book offers a unique coverage of integrated logistics of navigation, aviation and transportation. The book not only answers the urgent need for a book on supply chain management and transport logistics but also highlights the central role of supply chain logistics in the emerging fields of sustainable (green), humanitarian and maritime supply chains and the importance of studying supply chain management together with transport logistics. It also explains the difference between supply chain
This book gives students a thorough overview of the environmental issues that impact the supply chain and details strategic methods of addressing the political, social, technological, market, and economic concerns that have caused organizations to reconsider their impact. Readers will learn how to integrate the fields of operations management, procurement and purchasing, logistics, and marketing into a successful green supply chain, looking outward to form sustainable partnerships rather than focusing their efforts within the company. Each chapter describes a function or dimension of green supply chains, supplemented with short vignettes to ground the theory in practice. The authors examine various industries, including electronics, food products, and manufacturing, and draw on case studies from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, allowing students to compare and contrast domestic and international practices. Blending industry insights with the latest academic thinking, they also consider hot button topics like global-local relationships, the role of third parties, green multitier supplier management, and blockchain technology management. Conclusive chapter summaries and plenty of visual aids help readers retain the information they need to improve environmental performance within, and beyond their organizations. Green Supply Chain Management is an excellent introduction to the topic for students and practitioners of supply chain management and environmental sustainability.

This book introduces readers to additive technology and its application in different business sectors. It explores the fundamental impact additive has on technology, particularly on operations, innovation, supply chains, the environment and customer relations. Subsequently, on the basis of a broad survey of the best technology adopters, it offers advice on how to enhance business value by implementing the technology in different industrial and commercial environments. Additive manufacturing (AM) is a new area of manufacturing that has already brought about phenomenal changes to industry and business models. It affects nearly all aspects of the managerial and organizational thinking that was applied to conventional manufacturing. Currently, the technology is being adopted in manufacturing areas that involve high-value products with complex geometries, and small to medium production volumes. It boosts the productivity of new product development processes by slashing costs, reducing time and promoting creativity and innovativeness. Further, it shrinks supply chains by bringing firms closer to their customers. This unique book offers abundant empirical and practical evidence confirming the value of this new technology.

All purchasing activities take place within a context of legal regulation, a context that has been taking on increasing importance in recent years. This book provide a clear and concise account of the underlying legal principles which affect the purchasing function. A new component of the third edition is an additional appendix which contains recent cases involving procurement law issues. These are kept separate from the main body of the book and are not essential for purposes of revising for the Legal Aspects exam. However, they do provide useful examples of how the courts have been interpreting the law in relation to a wide range of procurement activities in the recent past. These include the EU public procurement rules, contract formation, assessment of claimable damages, limitations of liability, the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, the Freedom of Information Act, and the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act.
Many organisations often fail, or perhaps stumble, in managing their suppliers. This is because the internal customer, or worse, someone else, is left to manage the selected suppliers, without perhaps realising that they have to. There is, therefore, often little use of best practice regarding how a procurement department relates to, or gets involved with the essential supplier management in the procurement process. This book concentrates on the need for better supplier management, and improving supplier management. It gives guidelines on how to better manage contracts and develop suppliers. The book answers the question: "What kind of relationship do I need with suppliers so I can get the best from them, and therefore the best for me?" The style of the book is direct with little jargon. It covers all of the basics as well as providing detailed and wider discussions to encourage thought and practical application. To facilitate practical application, the book is illustrated by case studies and application checklists. The following main sections are covered: Procurement Strategy, Supplier Management; the Suppliers View, Supplier Relationship Management, Supplier Development, Supplier Management: Making the change and Supplier Management: Conclusion |
