The reader will find in this book a new approach to improving health. The author has called this approach “sanomechanics,” combining the Latin sanus (healthy, sound) and mechanicus (science of the motion of bodies subjected to forces). The focus of sanomechanics is on exercising with an understanding of the biomechanical consequences of the actions. This understanding is based on the author’s theory of the floating skeleton, which postulates a hydraulic connection of synovial joints. The theory explains the greater or lesser success of any exercise utilizing the ability of the human skeleton to absorb and transform forces and moments from the body segments and the environment. This ability vanishes with age and illnesses, and the deeper our understanding of the nature of skeletal functioning is, the better we shall be able to improve, protect, and prolong the skeleton’s health.

The diagnosis and treatment of memory disorders pose considerable problems for the clinician. Many different organic conditions produce disturbances of memory, but the relationship between cerebral pathology and memory disturbance can often be difficult to establish. Furthermore, assessment and treatment require specialized skills and merit an inter?disciplinary approach towards patient management. Despite the many books which have been written on various aspects of memory disorders, none so far has been specially designed to give practical help to those who have to deal with diagnosis and subsequent management of patients with memory disturbance resulting from specific types of cerebral pathology. The author achieves this aim by organizing his book on the basis of clinical aetiology. Anatomical and psychological perspectives are also introduced, but the emphasis is on approaches which will help clinicians in the management of patients with specific neurological diseases. For example, the essential topic of differential diagnosis is given prominence throughout: the principles of diagnostic assessment are discussed in a separate chapter, and specific diagnostic features are also outlined in each of the chapters dealing with individual cerebral pathologies. This book is an attempt to advance the discussion and improve our understanding about the effects of aging and movement disorders on motor control during walking and postural tasks. Despite these activities are performed daily, there is a high requirement of motor and neural systems in order to perform both tasks efficiently. Both walking and posture require a complex interaction of musculoskeletal and neural systems. However, the mechanisms used to control these tasks, as well as how they are planned and coordinated, are still a question of discussion among health professionals and researchers. In addition, this discussion is more interesting when the effects of aging are included in the context of locomotion and the postural control. The number of older individuals is 841 million in 2015, which is four times higher than the 202 million that lived in 1950. Aging causes many motor, sensorial and neural deficits, which impair locomotion and postural control in the elderly. The severity of this framework is worsened when the aging goes along with a movement disorder, such as Parkinson disease, Chorea, Dystonia, Huntington disease, etc. Therefore, the aim of this book is to highlight the influence of different aspects on planning, controlling and performing locomotion and posture tasks. In attempting to improve current knowledge in this field, invited authors present and discuss how environmental, sensorial, motor, cognitive and individual aspects influence the planning and performance of locomotor and postural activities.
