Biomechanics for Life - Introduction to Sanomechanics (Hardcover, Edition.): Mark R. Pitkin Biomechanics for Life - Introduction to Sanomechanics (Hardcover, Edition.)
Mark R. Pitkin
R2,896 Discovery Miles 28 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The reader will find in this book a new approach to improving health. The author has called this approach “sanomechanics,” combining the Latin sanus (healthy, sound) and mechanicus (science of the motion of bodies subjected to forces). The focus of sanomechanics is on exercising with an understanding of the biomechanical consequences of the actions. This understanding is based on the author’s theory of the floating skeleton, which postulates a hydraulic connection of synovial joints. The theory explains the greater or lesser success of any exercise utilizing the ability of the human skeleton to absorb and transform forces and moments from the body segments and the environment. This ability vanishes with age and illnesses, and the deeper our understanding of the nature of skeletal functioning is, the better we shall be able to improve, protect, and prolong the skeleton’s health.

Remaking the Body - Rehabilitation and Change (Paperback): Wendy Seymour Remaking the Body - Rehabilitation and Change (Paperback)
Wendy Seymour
R1,470 Discovery Miles 14 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Our lives are preoccupied with bodily maintenance. We spend many of our waking hours eating, exercising, washing, grooming and dressing in order to maintain our sense of self. What happens after major physical impairment? How do we relate to a damaged body?
Wendy Seymour interviews men and women who have suffered profound bodily paralysis, and explores how they deal with their appearance, relationships, sexuality, incontinence and sport. She finds that even major impairment hasn't annihilated these people's experience of an embodied self. She shows that the process of self-reconstruction is interwoven with social expectations and argues that the experience of disability highlights the continuous work involved in embodiment for everyone.
Remaking the Body is a major contribution to the field of the sociology of the body and essential reading for rehabilitation professionals and students.

Humor and the Healing Arts - A Multimethod Analysis of Humor Use in Health Care (Paperback): Athena Dupre Humor and the Healing Arts - A Multimethod Analysis of Humor Use in Health Care (Paperback)
Athena Dupre
R1,180 Discovery Miles 11 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Offering a social scientific look at humor's role in medical transactions, this volume is based on extensive field study in seven medical settings. It includes excerpts from dozens of actual conversations between patients and caregivers. Analysis of these episodes reveals that humor is a practical tool used to meet many medical objectives. It is used by patients to good-naturedly complain and to campaign for more personal attention, and by caregivers to get attention, make amends, insist on unpleasant routines, and establish rapport.
Examining humor from many angles, the book begins with a phenomenological analysis of the essence of funny. This section describes what makes some things funny but not others, and how to distinguish between potentially funny and unfunny episodes in medical situations. From an ethnographic perspective, joking around is shown to be a persuasive element of medical culture. Examples illustrate how patients and caregivers use humor to negotiate the dialectics between helping and hurting, and individuality and compliance. Additionally, a close-up look at three medical transactions shows how humor is used to help a physical therapy patient overcome fear and queasiness, reduce the embarrassment of a mammography, and defuse a potential conflict between a student aide and a young patient. A final section examines techniques for initiating conversational humor.
In sum, this volume provides an intimate and realistic look at medical conversations as they are conducted every day. It serves as a valuable complement to health communication texts and offers information of interest to health communication scholars, healthcare practitioners, and anyone interested in the effects and techniques of conversational humor. Richly grounded in naturally occurring data, the book can be understood and used effectively by both scholars and practitioners.

The Experience of Hearing Loss - Journey Through Aural Rehabilitation (Hardcover): Vinaya Manchaiah, Berth Danermark The Experience of Hearing Loss - Journey Through Aural Rehabilitation (Hardcover)
Vinaya Manchaiah, Berth Danermark
R3,906 Discovery Miles 39 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hearing loss is a common chronic condition which is often poorly recognized but can have multiple negative impacts, not just on the lives of those directly affected, but also those living with them. People with impaired hearing may begin a long and uncertain journey involving a number of key stages, from emerging awareness and help-seeking, to diagnosis, adjustment, and self-evaluation. Based on a model of person-centered audiological rehabilitation, this book explains why it is important to understand both patients' own experiences, and those of their communication partners, over time. It focuses particularly on the human dynamics of hearing loss, exploring the broader consequences of hearing loss for the individual, family members, and wider society. In particular the book: gives insight into the patients' and their communication partners' experiences and perspectives through clear and telling first-hand narrative accounts; examines how people understand their own hearing loss, reflect on their experiences with hearing aids - both positive and negative - and evaluate treatment options; considers the changes needed to conversations in order to include all communication partners, whether with impaired hearing or not; and discusses consequences of hearing loss using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). With its explicit aim to increase awareness of the need to include the patient and close relatives in the process of rehabilitation, this new text makes an important contribution to further improve evidence-based practice in the field of audiological rehabilitation. An ideal text for audiology, ENT, and nursing students of all levels.

Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback): Barbara P. Uzzell, Henry H. Stonnington Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback)
Barbara P. Uzzell, Henry H. Stonnington
R1,858 Discovery Miles 18 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Emotions, behaviors, thoughts, creations, planning, daily physical activities, and routines are programmed within our brains. To acquire these capacities, the brain takes time to fully develop--a process that may take the first 20 years of life. Disruptions of the brain involving neurons, axons, dendrites, synapses, neurotransmitters or brain infrastructure produce profound changes in development and functions of the one organ that makes us unique. To understand the functions and development of the brain is difficult enough, but to reverse the consequences of trauma and repair the damage is even more challenging. To meet this challenge and increase understanding, a host of disciplines working and communicating together are required.
The International Association for the Study of Traumatic Brain Injury tried to correct this limitation during its meetings of international clinicians, researchers, and scientists from many fields. It was felt that many of the outstanding thoughts and ideas from the participants' most recent meeting and from others working in the field of traumatic brain injury (TBI) should be shared. This book was conceived not as proceedings of the conference, but as a collection of knowledge for those working in the acute and chronic recovery aspects of head injury.
This book reflects the importance of the team approach to patients with TBI. The chapter authors come from a diverse array of disciplines--basic science, neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, psychology, neuropsychology, and legal, consumer, and speech/language science. Their contributions provide the most current research and the latest ways of managing a variety of aspects of TBI.

Memory Disorders in Clinical Practice (Paperback, New Ed): Narinder Kapur Memory Disorders in Clinical Practice (Paperback, New Ed)
Narinder Kapur
R1,131 Discovery Miles 11 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The diagnosis and treatment of memory disorders pose considerable problems for the clinician. Many different organic conditions produce disturbances of memory, but the relationship between cerebral pathology and memory disturbance can often be difficult to establish. Furthermore, assessment and treatment require specialized skills and merit an inter?disciplinary approach towards patient management. Despite the many books which have been written on various aspects of memory disorders, none so far has been specially designed to give practical help to those who have to deal with diagnosis and subsequent management of patients with memory disturbance resulting from specific types of cerebral pathology. The author achieves this aim by organizing his book on the basis of clinical aetiology. Anatomical and psychological perspectives are also introduced, but the emphasis is on approaches which will help clinicians in the management of patients with specific neurological diseases. For example, the essential topic of differential diagnosis is given prominence throughout: the principles of diagnostic assessment are discussed in a separate chapter, and specific diagnostic features are also outlined in each of the chapters dealing with individual cerebral pathologies. For the discussion of assessment, the author draws on his own extensive experience as a practising clinical neuropsychologist to describe and evaluate the range of existing memory test procedures, and to suggest additional procedures as appropriate. Where evidence exists on the treatment of memory disorders in specific neurological conditions, this is also discussed and critically reviewed. Full references are also given for thosewishing to develop their own assessment of therapeutic procedures. The text is extensively illustrated, with much previously unpublished material on individual neurological conditions giving some remarkable insights into the links between cerebral pathology and memory dysfunction. Mainly intended for practising neurologists and clinical neuropsychologists, anyone whose work brings them into contact with patients suffering from memory disturbance will find this book invaluable.

Locomotion and Posture in Older Adults - The Role of Aging and Movement Disorders (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Fabio Augusto... Locomotion and Posture in Older Adults - The Role of Aging and Movement Disorders (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Fabio Augusto Barbieri, Rodrigo Vitorio
R5,966 Discovery Miles 59 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is an attempt to advance the discussion and improve our understanding about the effects of aging and movement disorders on motor control during walking and postural tasks. Despite these activities are performed daily, there is a high requirement of motor and neural systems in order to perform both tasks efficiently. Both walking and posture require a complex interaction of musculoskeletal and neural systems. However, the mechanisms used to control these tasks, as well as how they are planned and coordinated, are still a question of discussion among health professionals and researchers. In addition, this discussion is more interesting when the effects of aging are included in the context of locomotion and the postural control. The number of older individuals is 841 million in 2015, which is four times higher than the 202 million that lived in 1950. Aging causes many motor, sensorial and neural deficits, which impair locomotion and postural control in the elderly. The severity of this framework is worsened when the aging goes along with a movement disorder, such as Parkinson disease, Chorea, Dystonia, Huntington disease, etc. Therefore, the aim of this book is to highlight the influence of different aspects on planning, controlling and performing locomotion and posture tasks. In attempting to improve current knowledge in this field, invited authors present and discuss how environmental, sensorial, motor, cognitive and individual aspects influence the planning and performance of locomotor and postural activities. The major thrust of the book is to address the mechanisms involved in controlling and planning motor action in neurological healthy individuals, as well as in those who suffer from movement disorders or face the effects of aging, indicating the aspects that impair locomotion and postural control. In addition, new technologies, tools and interventions designed to manage the effects of aging and movement disorders are presented in the book.

Part II presents her neurosurgeon, Adel Helmy, and a clinical neuropsychologist, Barbara A. Wilson. Adel provides a medical context by explaining Alex's successful surgery and her post-operative experience. Finally, Barbara concludes with a comprehensive view of Alex's recovery and gives a voice to the therapists and psychologists who worked with Alex throughout her in and outpatient rehabilitation journey. This book provides support, understanding and hope for patients who have suffered a brain tumour, and their families. It is valuable reading for any professional involved in neurorehabilitation, studemts of clinical neuropsychology and those touched by brain injury.
